I bought a Nexus 5 on day 1 and quickly returned it once i got it. The screen was so badly washed out it made my Nexus 4 look like a 4K TV, sound quality was just horrible and the defect was insane distortion and crackling coming from the speaker on many songs, I even posted about that here and i wasn't alone.
I returned it and decided to stick with my N4 for another year, since then the bluetooth, camera, and phone are all failing on my nexus 4, i can't focus the camera, bluetooth cuts out constantly and the phone hangs up for no reason with perfect service. So i badly need a new phone now. I hate to even consider another nexus from LG considering what's happening to my N4 but it's more expensive to get a new N4 or Moto X than it is a N5.
So i'm hoping that someone can tell me if through a rom, kernel, app that the washed out screen and terrible sound quality are fixable.
Simple as that. I'd be willing to give the N5 another shot if i can install something that will get the screen to look normal and sound to not sound so ungodly terrible. I had to do that on the Galaxy Nexus for over a year and if i have to do it again so be it. Better that than having a broken phone like i do right now.
Hi,
For the colors it's on the kernel side so you can try ElementalX, Faux123 or Franco kernels. They also have sound improvements, tunables via apps, like the colour control. Just take a look in the OP of the kernel threads.
There is also this mod for the sound: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2532788, I use it and it works great for me.

Thanks for the fast reply. So for the colors guess it's probably the same as the GNex where someone comes up with the perfect setting and we all use it?
And the sound mod sounds interesting. I do remember the volume being quite low yet still having terrible quality. Does that improve upon the quality at all? It was just shocking how my N4, hell my 3DS had better sound quality than the N5.
Cant comment on that mod but viper4android definitely improves quality

Yes, for example in Franco thread or in the Franco kernel FAQ thread you have a ton of profiles, it depends on your tastes but the "washed" screen is easily fixed.
For the sound mod it's mainly about louder sound, but for me it seems "clearer" (?), but I'm not a melomane then... maybe I have not the right ears
Like rootSU said if you really want a total control over the quality, try Viper4Android...

Its been 2 years and key components are failing? that's no good for LG
Well finally got my N5 and franco kernel worked perfectly for the screen quality. Few presets i'm switching between as i try to find the right spot. So much better than it was on the GNex though.
Sound wise not too happy so far. the rom i'm using has DSP manager and i played around with that but couldn't really get anything to sound that much better, same with viper. The louder mod did work but actually almost made it too loud and the phone as is is actually pretty loud, not as loud as my N4 but it's good enough so far.
one thing i noticed with DSP manager and Viper is that they didn't seem to affect ringtones or anything other than the music app. Is there anyway to get them to do that, or any other form of system wide audio improvement that will affect 100% of all sounds through the speaker?

the displays inside the nexus 5 are all different. just like some chips can handle more undervolting than others. some will find one color preset better than another. franco has a couple dozen color presets from the community in his app that make testing very easy
RMA
My N5 works fine. Yours must have been defective. Also, there are lots of mods out there that allows you to change the screen color temperature out there so might as well give it a try if you still think it is problematic after RMA.

So my Nexus 5's speaker is absolute garbage compared to my Nexus 5. the range is just non-existent and it has incredibly bad distortion during phone calls, and most music and videos.
Right now i'm ready to return the phone and spend another year with my nexus 4 over it, but before i do, i'm curious to know if mine might just be defective.
So to all the other owners, do you have distortion, pops and the like when making phone calls or having any audio through and how does it compare to your previous phones, especially any other Nexus 4 owners.
Right now my N4 sounds like my $150 desktop speakers compared to the N5.

Yeah that's why i'm posting because i find it incredibly hard to believe that the Nexus 5, in 20 god damn 13 had worse speakers than my G1 from 2008. And just to test, i broke out my G1, MyTouch 3G and Nexus One, and played the same ringtones on each. No distortion on any device but the N5.
The Verge even said in their review that they had distortion on the speaker which almost leads me to think this is normal, and unacceptable.

all reviews are saying the speaker is terrible. same with the camera. but they're comparing it to 600+ dollar phones, you get what you pay for, the bulk on the 350 dollars is going toward the processor and screen

That is true, but my $300 Nexus 4 from a year ago sounds 100 times better than my $400 (32gb) nexus 5 from this year.
And also the whole $700/$350 thing is kinda bull****. Though that phone does cost $700 to buy, it costs the same as what a nexus costs, usually around $150-$200 to produce. Google just cuts out all the middle men and carrier BS to get the price to be that low. Yes they do make sacrifices but my damn G1 sounds better than my Nexus 5, so that has nothing to do with cost.

No, it's not just you, I thought it was me!
I came from an HTC One X and the call quality is terrible; a bit like what I imagine being a little bit deaf is like and when I'm playing a video or have a call on speaker, the thing buzzes and vibrates. Not good compared to my previous phone.
ugh. this isn't looking good. i really was hoping i was the only one. Hope we get a lot more replies here tonight.
Only one speaker?
On mine I noticed only one side is playing the music? anyone else?
I'm hoping it's something like a mic and speaker... and not a deffective

thats correct. one side is the speaker and one is the mic. evidently this is normal practice on the iphone and many other devices. I just found out today.
Hows your quality though?
Two things i hear the crackle/pop on guaranteed is the ringing of a phone call and for some reason Lindsey Stirlings Crystalize, the first 30-40 seconds. lots of other examples but those two are the easiest and most noticeable i found.

Just got my white 32gb N5 today and indeed mine is suffering from similar issues. At first I was thinking my right speaker was DOA but I later learned it's not a speaker at all and is a mic - the N5 is a mono device. So, I played some music, an audio book and tried out some ringtones. A pop was audible on some ringtones and the audiobook. The sound gets pretty distorted when at the top two levels. I wonder if the pop is down to the audio coding because now I've downloaded higher quality files, the pop has gone away and distortion not quite as bad at high levels. Yet to try out a phone call over the speaker.
I've tested some music at 320 bit rate and hd video on youtube and the play store and same issues. and then no issues at all on the nexus 4.
Great I was so excited to purchase my first nexus phone. Ugh

You know, I was at Pete's Coffee last night with my girlfriend and 2 people were talking next to us about this exact same issue. A man in his early 30s was talking to a buddy of his about the Nexus 5, and naturally, I zoned out from what my girlfriend had to say overheard their conversation.
They were talking about the Nexus 5 and how one of them who had the phone loved it, except he said the speaker was very poor quality.
Hopefully mine does not have this issue when it arrives this Thursday.
The Nexus 5's speaker is actually pretty darn good. Not quite HTC One level but damn close. It uses the same chip technology the HTC One has but only has a mono speaker on the bottom edge instead. It should be MUCH better than the Nexus 4, the Galaxy S4, or similar.
If it is sounding distorted, it is quite possibly a damaged speaker or chip, and should be RMA'ed. Reviews (unlike what some whacko said) have actually been pretty positive about the speaker.

Your now the second person i've seen to say that it's good. How much have you tested it though? phone calls? loud movies? music?
I want to keep this phone, or at least get a replacement, but i got about 5 people with me saying they have similar issues so it's getting harder to imagine that it's a defect.
My sound is pretty faint. I'll be lucky if I hear a text or call

I have played music from a couple different sources at full volume and I haven't heard any distortion.
I actually just watched a full review of the phone here in the General section, and he says the speaker is absolutely great! although he does not ever test in the video.
Been using mine all day. A bit of music and a fair few YouTube video and I've not noticed any problems at all. Nowhere near as loud as the Note 2 I'm coming from, but few phones are as loud as it. So far I'm happy with speaker quality
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Well since some of you do not seem to have this issue I'm going to hope those of us with it just have defective units and i'm going to exchange mine.
If the one i get has the same issues though, i'll be sticking with my Nexus 4 for another year.
My second day with the Nexus 5, the only thing I am kind of hecked about is the Speaker. It's kind of the on the low level, Im not sure if it's the hardware glue thing ( As Adam Outler stated and has a fix for that, but not going on the risk of opening my device  ).
BUT - I remember on my Galaxy Nexus days, when the speaker was awfully low, there used to be a Flashable Mod that magically turned the speaker into a BEAST. If Nexus 5's chip supports this kind of improvement, I hope any Dev brings out some goodie ANY TIME SOON !
Any word from someone whose been into the speaker output quality saga?
I believe Faux123 has released his FauxSound mod for the nexus 5. While I don't know whether the mod affects sound quality or only volume, you could give that a shot. I believe you can use it after flashing his custom kernel, not sure if it can be used independently or not.

I know there are quite a few complaints about the speaker/sound quality on the N5, but I'm wondering if I'm actually experiencing a situation different than the typical complaints. When I have my volume at max, the sound is distorted and "vibraty" (it gives off that vibrational distorted sound, if that makes any sense). Is that what most people are experiencing? I want to make sure that I don't have a defective device, and that this horrid sound quality is the phone "working as intended."
Thanks in advance.

I appreciate the response. I heard that Google is sending out an update for both the sound and camera issues. I'd like to see what they take care of before I flash anything. I'm enjoying stock.
But I was wondering if the sound I'm experience is also what everyone else is experiencing. It sounds good at middle volumes, but slightly distorted at max volume. Is that normal?

Is it normal, I can't say - IMO, it's to be expected and that's me. Take a look at the size of that mono speaker and it is by Bose, right - ain't no way it's going to compete with my 8-speakers/subwoofer Bose system setup @ home that cost a bit, urrrhhh. And, it's not going to deliver stage live quality for listening in any challenging environment - but, tune your expectations & you will be happy. I put on a decent pair of noise-cancelling audio headset & tweaked the equalizer settings, wow - I'm satisfied.
This is XDA and as others noted, there are patches & workaround but there is only so much we can do to overcome hardware limitations with design specifications. Look at the true HD screen itself - actually, it sounded pretty good paired with a Big Blue bluetooth travel speaker.
Just sit back, I would be surprised if the speaker isn't stressed out at max output with boosting & continued to work - I can live with a bit of distortion if that's the tradeoff. You can always RMA and wait for a new one to see if it's better (newer production batch #) - can you send it back & willing to wait, I won't as I will not let this beauty out of sight - too busy exploring KitKat and it's functions.

just got my nexus 5 after nearly a month of waiting. only had two days with it so far, but coming from an iPhone 5, the speaker volume is rather lacking. Compared the same exact music/sounds with my iPhone 5. iPhone practically stomped on volume loudness. the most bothersome of this issue is that ringtones, google voice, etc is not very audible, even at the nexus 5's highest volume. so, is this issue a software issue that can be fixed in an update? like has it been confirmed? im aware of the hardware mod on this forum, but id rather wait on voiding my warranty if I can, so im willing to wait if a firmware update CAN fix this.

According to this, it's a software issue but I don't know how anyone will know for sure until a software update comes out.

Being one of the people who did the HW mod, I'd say both. The HW is definitely not properly made, most notably the speaker hosing is sealed which doesn't allow the speaker to move air efficiently and so makes for a very lousy sound. There also have been some success in SW which makes me think that with 5min spent to do the HW mod and decent SW update the phone can finally become borderline usable as far as speaker goes.
Vibration is another issue...
Some success in software? Is this something I can try before resorting to he mod? (I will probably wait before going the latter route)
Vibration doesn't seem too much of an issue to me. Not sure though, haven't compared with my old phone, though I will say the haptic feedback (I think that's what its called) every time I click a button or use the keyboard, is kind of annoying lol

The sw mod really simple and easy, and yes you can restore the factory settings easy.

there is a reason speakers have a sealed back. it's to keep the sound on th erear of the speaker from cancelling the sound on the front. dipole speakers don't have a sealed back and they drop a very regular decibel every octave below the wavelength of the baffle. there isn't much room for a large baffle in a phone so the back is sealed instead to try to preserve what little bass a small speaker can create. but the bass the speaker can create is soo little you may not notice the loss and instead notice some gain from increasing speaker excursion and effectively having double the cone area.
there are also ported/bass reflex boxes that phase shift the rear sound wave through a resonant chamber and a port to extend bass by putting the rear wave in phase with the front for a small frequency window.
there are other designs. but not much that will fit in a phone. i wouldn't say the design of the phone is faulty, just ineffective on such a small scale. maybe a trasmission line design where there was a channel that snaked around all the free space in the phone would be better. a rear loaded horn would be louder but takes up a lot of space.
as far as software, well there is only so much voltage that the internal amp can drive the speaker with. they have to find a gain ratio where there is enough headroom at full volume for most content to play without clipping. music is very dynamic and the louder something is the more extra energy you need to create an equivalent apparent change in loudness. you can raise the gain on almost any well designed system and not experience clipping on 90% + of a song but there may be a section of a particular song where you lose headroom and drive it into clipping. they probably went on the safe side with the hardware gain to preserve the quality of the music. but by all means if you prefer more loudness use a software mod.
there are some things that you could do, like software compression where the gain drops on the parts that exceed the max loudness. but it can make the music sound less lively. or you can just let it clip and maybe eventually damage the amp and/or speaker but that's probably not even a problem on such a small scale.

They wireless have a new model number but look exactly the same as the other ones. Maybe an updated charging port warp charge bigger battery or my hope BT 5.0 aptx hd. With even better sound stage.. we will soon see.

Awaiting for the BEAST
That sounds amazing! With the beast I get the bass beast. Always have been a fan of OP ! Kudos to the team to live up to the expectation! Cool man ! Awaiting the next beast - OP6T! Will definitely upgrade ! :
Got my bullets wireless (newer model) 2 hour ago and I've been screwing with them since then. They're really nicely made, comfortable and the included "adaptors" (wings and ear tips) could probably have a slightly bigger option, or the biggest option could've been a bit bigger. But this is just nitpicking though. But we have to admit that the design is inspired by the Beats X which is not necessarily a bad thing because those are pretty great. They're a bit better in terms of quality, but the bullets wireless are really close to them and they're considerably cheaper . Oh, not to forget, the cable is a bit longer that I wanted, but it's ok.
Sound: they sound really good out of the box but I've never been satisfied with any headphones/earbuds I tried. For me the conclusion is drawn AFTER using them tweaked with Viper4Android. There's no listening to anything without V4A, which allows for a series of tweaks that makes the audio experience for MY ears and perception of what a great sound is.
Anyway, without V4A they sound pretty good, not exceptional but pretty good nonetheless. They're really loud and it's really nice that there is no distortion of sound at maximum volume.
With V4A and my favourite profile (tweaked a bit), they're pretty great. They can be even louder and the sound still doesn't distort, but that's just a bit of an extreme scenario to see what they're capable of because it's an unrealistic and no one would blow up their eardrums listening to music at that volume.
Mic quality, better that almost every other pair I tried. I dare to say it's better than my OP6's mic, but I need to test it in more environments than at home (indoors, outdoors).
The pause function when you stuck one earbud to the other is really useful.
And this last thing might seem a silly one, but ... Usb-C, baby. Finally I'm done with having to use 2 cables to charge my s#!t.
Anyway, I haven't spent but around 2 hours wit them, but it's enough to recommend them to anyone who wants something great for a relatively decent price. They're worth more , IMO, but I digress.
If you were thinking of getting a pair, go for it. You will NOT be dissapointed one bit.

It says 32b on mine. If it makes you feel any better, one of my friends has the 31b model (previous model) and there's no difference in sound at all, or build quality, etc. The 31b model even has clickier buttons than my pair so I'm pretty sure OnePlus hasn't improved anything in the last model. 32b is probably meant as a model name change because of the red wired pair of wireless bullets they released along the OP6T. So in terms of quality (etc) they're most probably the same. So don't worry, your model is identical to mine despite of what the model name says.

V4a improves everything. If you want overwhelming base, V4a will give you that, and as strong as the base you'll tweak to be, it won't distort, which shows that the Bullets Wireless are really capavle of providing marginally better sound than what they're giving out of the box.
I can't imagine using a phone without V4a installed. It's just too good to not have.
