[Q] Getting root on Lenovo S930 - General Questions and Answers

Hi all
I have a Lenovo S930 imported from China.
It came with languages and play store installed and works great. Amazing phone.
The problem is root.
And I really need root so I can edit the hosts file for site testing.
It came rooted with superuser installed.
But no root access for root apps and update superuser fails.
I have write permissions on the system partition.
So I don’t understand.
I asked the store in China about this and they sent me a link to this file thatseems to contain everything from the ROM to language packs and drivers etc.
But I am a noob at rooting and if i proceed without solid advice and anything goes wrong it won't be worth it with couriers etc, sending it back to China for repair.
Is there a simple fix for this?
After all if the phone was rooted before, surely it can't be something too complicated.
Also I have searched extensively and emailed the superuser dev(no reply yet).
Advice gratefully accepted.
Thanks

same with me i have s930 phone but nothing tools root available for this device
i used frameroot but not working still unroot

Have you try using Zhuodashi, or SRSRoot, or VRoot (via PC) or Master Root Cekas (root directly in the device) ? It works in almost all Lephone. Some of it are not in english but you can see a word ROOT. Just find it ßγ gogling.

have tried all those methods to lenovo s880, a706, s920, a3000. And tried framaroot too (almost all version), but framaroot only works in a706 and a3000. Successfully root and use custom rom.
If you have any problem (botloop), dont worry, you can flash official rom from lenovo's website.

Root tools
I am using Lenovo S930 and rooted by tools. I am using Hong Kong version and use VROOT tools from Chinese web site. Connect USB to PC and mouse click root then Phone Reboot and Rooted. http://www.mgyun.com/vroot
After a month, I brought a S930 from China. It is because China version selling price is lower much than Hong Kong. However, it haven't Google Apps on it. I did root on phone by this tools http://shuaji.360.cn/root/ . It can be easier to install it to phone and run the apps. Finally reboot phone manually. It should be rooted. Go goo.im to download google apps and use CWM Recovery to install back all google apps

After wasting my time with other methods suggested by the vendor, eventually I managed to root my two Lenovo S930 using the tool you mentioned from 360.cn even without a PC. I simply downloaded and installed the APK, started it, accepted the license terms (the Chinese writing for Yes is on the right) and then clicked the big green button to root.
Does it have spyware? No idea. But I was not sure also about the other tools I tried, at least this one worked!

Yesterday i change my firmware to ROW_118_140127 i get this firmware from lenovo forum russia, this is the latest firmware official, and i got root with TWRP because vRoot not stable if i used in this firmware always restart every minutes,

Hi andies,
The Russian Lenovo forum is what I've been focusing too although I have not taken the plunge yet.
Did you have the Chinese firmware S930_S129_131030 before you flashed?
What where the results?
Everything working OK?
Is everything working in English OK?
The reason I ask is because I think I understood when reading the forum(using Translate) that there are additional steps to take to get the gsm working.
Also I didn't understand your post above.
Using vRoot or using the Russian rom caused your phone restart a lot?
So many questions, sorry..
If it was a positive experience, Is it possible that you could maybe do a step by step walk through including the tool versions you used and as much detail as possible?
It would be a great help to the many people using this great phone.

Yes, before i flashed i have chinese firmware S930_S129_131030
Everything work until now, its support english, its latest firmware official ROW say they in the forum, but beware about this "For smartphones purchased in China, you may need a firmware GSM-module" in my country i doesnt need change anything, GSM work perfect, i dont know in another country. I feel S930 ROW_S118_140127 better than S930_S129_131030
i think method root with vRoot not support for firmware S930 ROW_S118_140127 because its make your phone auto restart every minutes but if unroot its normal again,
I used method auto root with TWRP its working fine in ROW_S118 until now, i think for step root method with TWRP ,you can refer directly to the forum lenovo russian.

You can go to Colonel Zap blog to search for the rom. I believe he has a rooted firmware for the HDC branded one. If yours is the Star or Tinji brand, just search for tinji i9300 in XDA and you can find the rooted firmware for it as well.
I just got a bigger version from fastcardtech.com and they call it the HDC Galaxy note II clone. This is a really new model just released this month in September.
I just completed a review on it so you can check it out on youtube.

I hope someone can make a rooted firmware for this as well. I have to settle for stock for the time being.
thanks

Hi
I've bought one s3 clone yesterday in Singapore. No brand.
It's a 6577 dual core with 1gb ram and 2gb rom.
The screen is 1280x720 PX what is quite nice.
I've rooted it with the spark tool and it worked.
But I can't access to my sdcard. It's not mounted.
Does any one know how to use it ?
Cheers

Hey guys,
Thanks for this informative thread. I am interested in a similar phone, the Hero 9300+. Any suggestions?
P.S. that S3 clone is sexay, but too fat. Lol
This is how I rooted my S3 i9300 mtk6577 android 4.1. U can try this process for any mtk6577 device but do this with caution and at your own risk. I haven't flashed the ROM bcoz it's too risky with these Chinese clones.
*Install the MTK6577 usb drivers http://www.4shared.com/rar/0MvyztbR/usb_driver_MT65xx_Android_ZTE_.html? cau2=403tNull
*Download the rooting .rar file (v2) from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
*please note that no apps must be open or running during the process.
*Connect the phone- should have the USB-Debug option enabled in settings.
*click RunMe.bat file and selectthe "Other" (option 4)
*click Restore option on ya mobile to backup ya data and then wait for the magic.
*Mobile should reboot twice and the command prompt on ya PC shows this msg: "Successful, going to reboot your device!"
*After completion, command prompt should state if phone has been rooted and superuser n terminal emulator apps automatically installed on ya mobile*
*After rooting my phone, I didnt see the superuser.apk file and just installed the superuser app from play store. U can also use any root checker apps to confirm that ya phone is rooted.
*To delete Chinese apps and anything u don't want, I used "Root App Delete" from play store. This app shows which system files u should not delete so PS do this with caution.

Regarding ya issue, have u tried settings > sim management > roaming and change ya options accordingly. Hope that works.

I have tried that but alas no joy .... Are you in the Uk using the phone yourself ?
Yes! I'm using the phone here in London on giffgaff ad lebara Sims. Try removing the battery and simcard for a min before placing them back. The giffgaff similar should reset to original settings. Have u also tried a giff gaff goody bag, its much cheaper. If alI fails, I think u should safely back up ya data and do a factory reset.

Download MobileGo for Android on winXp
Open the application on your PC and connect ya phone via USB. make sure USB debugging is enabled. the computer automatically searches for ya mobile phone to the last detail. It may show a diffierent make since its a clone. so no worries about that.
Then click back up and it will back up all ya contacts, sms, all downloaded and system apps. so in case u need them later, just connect ya fone and click restore. no apps must be running during the back up or restore processes.

@sankhauaa....
Thank you very much for the recovery. I ahd rooted my mobile on the first day itself and was searching from past two days and you posted it on ight time. I downloaded it before I use it I have two querues.
1. Did you test backing up the ROM and restore with the recovery? Is it fully functional?
2. What is the source of this recovery? Did you cook it on your own? Though it is not necessary for me to know, still would be interested to know to satisfy my curiosity.
I really appreciate your work and will keep an eye on this thread.

Thakns mate, I already flashed the recovery in the morning and backed up the ROM too. I must say job is done perfectly fine. Looked at the CWM backup and seems to have all the files in place. But as there is no Factory FW available for the device, just worried to experiment in case we need to start from flashing from factory FW.

Hi Kkrraazzyy, nice to see you here. What do you mean by brother? I9003? Then I lost it last week. So after enough research went for this phone as a second phone. I am using Note 2 as my primary phone. But let me tell you after buying this phone I literally stopped using Note 2, it is very comfortable and great looking phone.
I bought it from eBay.in. Spent nearly Rs. 13200/- after using a discount coupon of 1000/-. Its really worthy, every one at my office wanted to buy this phone when they saw this phone.

AT&T S4 4.3 KNOX information

I've seen a lot of questions about KNOX during the time of the MJ9 update and there is a lot of mis-information about it. I am going to try to clear a few things up and put some links that might help explain KNOX. I will probably not maintain this thread because it is an informative thread and not really a development thread. Please feel free to add or correct any information (verified) that might help others.
Here is Samsung's KNOX website that included information and the "KNOX" store:
https://www.samsungknox.com/en
Basically, KNOX is meant for business and enterprise applications as fully described by the above link. KNOX is NOT a single app, it is an entire security solution implemented by Samsung that uses an entire suite of apps to accomplish it's needs.
There are a lot of people asking about, "Why the AT&T 4.3 update does not include KNOX?" The simple answer is that it DOES. It must be activated for administrative privileges on the phone under Settings / Security / Device Administrators. What the AT&T S4 and NOTE 3 4.3 phones failed to include is the app that allows for the creation of separate profiles "KNOXstub.apk". This is completely AT&T's fault. Here is a link to the NOTE 3 forum that better tells the story:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470278
Again, that is from the Note 3 forum but most of the information applies to the AT&T S4 as well.
**UPDATE** The app "Knoxstub.apk" from the Note 3 forum thread above has been confirmed as working with the S4. If you use it, make sure to give proper credit and thanks to that thread's creator (OP) and the person that supplied the apk. (he is mentioned in the thread). Also, make sure you read that ENTIRE thread for information about possible negative interactions between KNOX, root, and other modifications. There is always a possibility something could go wrong so the risk is yours.
Here is a link to the "Knoxstub" apk that was posted in the Note 3 forum. Thanks jimlmackjr for re-uploading it for the S4 community.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/i4b4seez92j2mhx/KNOXStub.apk
.............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
There is an app on the PlayStore that is for AT&T phones:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sec.knox.app.container&hl=en
This app might only be compatible with the Note 3, I can't test it because I am on MDL. However, it is the profile creation app (called KnxAppLoader on the playstore).
**UPDATE** The app at the playstore was reported as showing "incompatible" with an AT&T 4.3 S4, which means it is probably for the Note 3. So, the extracted app method will be the better bet at working or maybe the playstore app can be side loaded?).
..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
If this app is not compatible to the AT&T 4.3 S4, it might be possible to extract the Knoxstub.apk from an Internation I9505 4.3 ROM or firmware and install it on the AT&T S4 with 4.3. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNTESTED FOR THE AT&T S4! However, the Note 3 forum was able to do the same thing with the International version on the Note 3 (again, information about this is in the Note 3 forum link above). Here is a link to a thread in the I9505 General forum that has the newest stock 4.3 (International 4.3) firmware. Again, credit goes to the threads OP. This stock firmware can also be downloaded from SamMobile.com:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252982
Download the latest International (I9505) stock firmware (MJ9) and extract the Knoxstub.apk.
If it works, the apk should install like any other apk and start loading additional files that will include the profile manager apk.
1. Again, there is always risk involved.
2. This is all as of yet untested.
3. As of now, there is no ODIN file for MJ9 and no way to "fix" the phone if it messes up!
Hopefully this information will help clear up some confusion over KNOX and maybe help people to obtain the profile manager apk they are looking for.
Good luck.
This app does not work with my s4. Just letting you know.

Are you talking about the app from the play store? Does it say not compatible? Or was it compatible, downloaded, but still would not work?
Or are you talking about the app extracted from a I9505 ROM? Thanks.

OK, thank you. I think the app extracted from the stock i9505 4.3 ROM might be a better bet.
After reading through that thread on the Note 3 board, I would use extreme caution before attempting to enable Knox, especially if your device is rooted. There are multiple people in that thread reporting problems such as FC boot loops.

That is part of the reason why I included that information (thread). It is always the users responsibility to take responsibility. As of now, safe root for the AT&T S4 (4.3) does not exist yet, but even people that used the banned method of rooting need to be aware of possible risk. Fortunately, I also noticed that people without root didn't seem to have problems and those with root that did seemed to have problems with apps such as "X-posed" as well. I think KNOX has a problem with root in general. So, like yourself, people need to read all available information before they try something. If something has already been posted and identified as an isuue, there should be no excuse for bringing it up afterwards as an issue.
This is from the one of the reviews of the app on the play store:
Those who want to Uninstall. Open app, enter password. Click menu then go to settings. There is an option to uninstall this.
I do not know if this option is in the pre-installed app as well, but if it is, it might provide a way to uninstall the profile Manager app if problems occur. Let me be clear. I do not know if the option exists in the pre-installed app and I am not positive it will clear up any issues that might exist even if it does exist and is used. Perhaps just disabling KNOX in device administrator would work or maybe freezing KNOX components will work. At this point it is all untested and no one knows. As mentioned, fortunately, it appears that the only people having issues (in the NOTE 3 forum) are because of conflict with root and root associated apps.

If so, The OP, post# 6, and the Note 3 thread (which the OP said to make sure to read) stated that there are issues with "root" and KNOX.
Post# 8 might have a way to uninstall the app but it is untested / unverified.

[Q] Need ROMs for Canvas Knight A350 or a kitkat update or any way to reinstall stock

I have a canvas Knight. Which is having a few problems which I know can be fixed by updating the ROMs.
So if there is any developer who can make ROMs for this phone is requested to reply me on this thread as I need a helping hand to get me out of the swamp.
The phone is rooted and is working all fine except for few small things.
Here is the list of problems.
1.) Bluetooth has stopped working after I accidentally reinstalled the BT.APK from "/system/app" folder.
2.) Camera seems to have a slight problem. When i try to take a photo its crystal clear and the pixels are very sharp. But when i click the image the phone will process the image and will make it blurred.
3.) I am unable to find any threads or post about the available ROMs for this phone.
So if any body has a solution for any of these problems please reply me here. As i do not trust Service centres of Micromax as they kept my phone for 2 months last time it was sent for a software update and finally I had to file a complaint in consumer forum to get the phone back.

I have no stock/official rom available. I downloaded one from the xda but i do not know how to flash that. I tried to restart the phone and also tried to reset the phone. Dalvik cache and cache has already been cleared. The phone will not boot into recovery and factory reset not working from inside. This is a stock rom and i have not changed it except for rooting. I also tried to use rom manager to go to recovery but it will start normally and it looks like there are no roms available for this phone. By the way the original phone is "Wiko Highway". I also contacted micromax but they do not have the software update and are asking me to either wait fir a month or send the phone to chennai....Are you kidding Micromax..!!..?? And i know i will have to fight with them to get the phone back after sending it to chennai... :banghead: Micromax you rock you rock my head....
And by the way bt did not work even after changing to these settings. Can you please give me any idea if u have any idea about any available roms

Try to use droidexplorer from pc to delete the files that are intalled into system folder by BT.apk.
By the way the Stock ROM itself has lots of bugs like RESET not working for me also from inside the phone.
If droidexplorer not worked try flashing stockrom its the only solution available now. I also soft bricked my phone after installing a beats.apk the only way i got out is flahing stock rom again.

Looks like there is a big con going on. The new devices which are preinstalled with Kitkat are having only 1.7 Ghz processor and there is no Gorilla Glass on it, While the old devices which are with Jelly bean still have 2.0 Ghz processor and the Gorilla Glass 3. By the wat Kitkat is slow on this phone so I switched back to Jelly Bean.

Does chainfire got a root for the 7.0 tablet yet?

I don't think chainfire's method works on the 7. 0 due to its unique hardware, but check the 7.0 root thread in the Q&A section.

I found a way how correctly unpack Tab 4 7.0 boot.img using a modified tool. Device tree table embedded inside, also contain a signature in the last block. Samsung/Marvell made none standard header, device tree and page size block information swapped Repack a boot.img need a different none standard tools Still working on it :good:
Yea, I managed to unpack and repack Tab 4 7.0's boot.img . The resulted boot.img identical to the original one :victory: My tools will be available on github soon. C'mon, press my Thanks button

Hi, any information about progress ?
I found that Vroot is working, but not for LTE verrsion T-235.
I used CF-Auto-Root-milletwifiue-milletwifiue-smt330nu.tar to root my T330 and it worked perfect. SuperSU detected Knox and I guess disabled it (I also freezed some Knox apps with Rom Toolbox Pro) I am also running Wanam Xposed which I guess fakes the system status to be set to Official so I can still get OTA. This tablet is really cool and I bet someone could make TWRP for it. I would be willing to help on anything. I know this thread is really for the 7" but I bet you guys know how to do it (recovery) on the 8" too.
Hi there,
working great using TWRP (easy and safe): just read here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55581754&postcount=45
on any rom for the T230.
