[Q] Strange in call sound between 2 nexus 5s - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im having a really weird issue with the sound quality in call between my gf and me both on nexus 5s. I have had mine for a few weeks, she liked it and picked one up about a week ago. The sound for both of us is hard to describe but it sounds tinny, a high hiss, metallic when one of us are talking, when we're not there is no static, hiss anything, only when talking, almost changing our voices. Neither of us experience this talking to any one else at all. We don't live together so I talk to her regularly and I was thinking somehow it was with one of our towers while at our homes but I have other family that lives blocks from her and on tmo and we don't get this. So we tried in different locations and the same thing so that's out. The weird thing is I can hang up, call her using my google voice number and it is crystal clear, call back using my tmo number and right back to the same sound.
I'm not sure where to go with this. I know I can just use my GV number but it's driving me crazy trying to figure out why the hell it would do this. Any help or insight is appreciated.

If you are both on T-Mobile you are experiencing HD voice. It's a bit jarring at first, but you get used to it.
My wife moved from the HTC One to the Moto X and it doesn't support HD Voice like the One and Nexus 5 does. I miss it.

It doesn't "change your voice" though...it just sounds more like a landline than a cell phone. It's a good difference when I use it.

That wasn't my description. I agree it sounds much better. It's just a little odd when you're experiencing it for the first time after years of poor voice quality.

No idea where I got that.
That's true.

Hmm, HD Voice huh. It really doesn't sound soo HD to me. I did a little digging on this and looked up the phones that are capable and both our old phones were. Until we both had a N5 it didn't sound like this. I trust that this is it but i'm not a fan if this is what they call HD. But like you said maybe we'll get used to it.
Thanks for the info!

HTC Inspire HAC Mode

I am hearing impaired and wear hearing aids in both ears and when I choose the HAC mode under Calls in settings, it mutes the audio on both incoming and
outgoing calls. You don't even hear the phone ring but when the call is answered you can't hear the person you called and they can't hear you. With HAC off
the phone works but I can barely hear it with out my aids even with the volume full up. Any one using HAC?

My dad wears hearing aids in both ears, and he recently got an inspire. I'll check with him tomorrow and see what his experience has been.
I know many people consider the volume level of the phone to be too low, I personally don't have any issue with it, but I don't get/make a lot of calls.
My Dad hasn't complained about it so far, and believe me, the guy isn't shy about returning things he isn't happy with, but I'll check with him anyway, and post again later in the day on Monday.

while making a call it would be great to know what he thinks.

I'll see what I can do. I don't know if he even knows about the HAC mode. I know I didn't until your post.
I won't see him until later today, just doing my morning xda check-in, atm.

Well, he was in a hurry, but I managed to talk a litte bit about it.
I asked him if he knew about the HAC setting, and as I thought, he didnt, so I asked him how the phone was performing in terms of using it with hearing aids, and he actually said it's loud, and that he doesn't even need to use the external speaker, which surprised me.
That explains why I hadn't heard any complaints coming from him, or questions about the HAC mode.
When I briefly glanced at the setting on my phone, it's description does indeed say something like "boosts volume of incoming calls."
If I get the chance again I'll see if he can actually turn the setting on and give him a test call, as you suggested. Like I said, he was in a hurry to get to a dinner engagement.
May not be today, but if you subscribe to this thread, and then check it occasionally, I'll post back when I'm able to get an answer for you.

Thanks Scott, I really appreciate your efforts. By your dad saying that it was loud, they might have turned it on at the store for him, that would be good to know. The HTC support tech told me they have not had any complaints about the HAC, but I have had two phones in two days with the same problem.
capman231
That's something I didn't check. I will take a look at his phone, next time I see him.
I'll keep you posted. Having a dad with impaired hearing, and hoping I don't follow suit later in life, I can sympathize, and won't forget about you...

Thanks for the info gtg465x. Wonder if HTC is aware of this? I have been talking with them and I must say their tech support people are real nice and helpful. They actually speak english with out an accent which makes it easy if your hearing impaired like me. I was surprised that the techs I have been talking to are in Knoxville TN, only 2 hrs from me.
Is there anything you can tell me specifically about this problem that I can pass on to them?

Well on my phone I could hear the other party but they couldn't hear me. All they heard was an echo of themselves. Speakerphone mode worked fine though.
Well that got cleared up, thanks to gtg465x.
Just to follow-up on my previous post, HAC was not enabled on my dad's phone.
And its a darn fine thing, evidently, or else that new phone of his would've been back to Costco in a heartbeat.

Is 2.3.5 any good?

Does it change battery life for the better?
Are data connections actually more reliable?
Any other real improvements??
I no longer have my Nexus, but I will buy another one in a second if the battery life is improved!
UPDATE:
Ok, so far it looks like people are indeed seeing improved signal and speeds.
What seems up in the air is the speaker volume (some are louder, some are not...)
Also unanswered as yet is how this update affects battery life. At least one person is saying his battery has gotten worse...
some say its better, im in mexico right now roaming on Movistar network...i updated, got 2.3.5 and everything seems the same....but probly wana listen out for someone in the usa. i wont be back tilll next sunday

Thanks. In terms of signal being better, is dBm better, or just the # of bars present? (they apparently jacked up the # of bars that show for a given signal strength, similar to what Apple did with the iPhone 4...)
Thanks guys.

Every small cellphone speaker will distort when turned all the way up. It definitely gets much louder than before which is great for my morning alarm.
It is louder, it was not cracking on mine but the music I listen to doesn't have heavy bass. I should try listening to some club music to test it out lol

I wonder which developer is working on this version right now
I think it would be better getting opinions after a week. Tonight, for my area at least, there was a data outage. I called sprint on another issue and they knew about the data and said it was nationwide. I made the impatient mistake (again) of using the samsung flasher back to stock. Every time I do that, I have to call sprint and have them reset something with my phone and the towers. I get error 16's.
am i missing something.........how are people testing the speakerphone? that is the only thing I really wanted from this update (along with 3G updates since I don't get 4G), and I notice no difference WHATsoever.
were they referring to alarm sounds, music, phone calls....what? did anyone have to perform a hard reset to notice the difference? the sounds have no difference in volume to me, especially phone calls and music.
Wow, google effed this one up. I now have a constant connection to my airave, full bars all the time. Only problem is I cant recieve calls now, they go straight to voicemail. Sprint rep says its a technical issue with the update and it will be looked into. In the mean time I have to unplug my airave and roam at home :/
Yea, as long as signal bars are not green I can recieve a call, as soon as they turn green it goes straight to voicemail. Also, my phone does ring alot louder now.
I've seen really no difference from 2.3.4 to 2.3.5.

Why doesn't everyone quit whining like a gaggle of *****es and realize that the boot time is about 4 seconds total, steaming lag is gone in the browser and we have a improved radio? Damn, you would think that someone in this forum would have enough common sense to realize that he who cannot do better should shut his trap.

All my tethering options are now gone. I can select them, but once they're active my 3G disappears. I have to turn off the tethering, then reboot my mobile data to get it back. I guess this is their way of making people pay for it.

[Q] Microphone gain waaay too low?

I have three Sensation 4g's on Tmobile, and the microphone gain on *all* of them is very low. Everyone that we call has problems hearing us. Unless I cup the entire bottom of the phone and direct my speech right into the mic, it is very difficult for the listener to hear me.
Have any of you experienced this as well? Since it is like this on all three on my phones, I suspect it is a problem with the Sensation 4g and not my particular phones.
Is there a way to boost the mic gain? We love the phone in ever other respect (except for the pathetic speakerphone!) .. but this is turning out to be a deal breaker.
Thanks.
My wife and I both have Sensations. Nobody has ever told us they couldn't hear us and when we talk to each other, we can hear each other loud and clear. I don't know what's going on but it seems odd to be happening on all 4 of your phones.
Mic volume is good with me on two Sensations.

Thanks for putting down your experiences. If you don't mind my asking, how do you hold the phone? Is the listener able to hear you loud and clear if you hold the phone from the upper half of the phone, slightly angled away from the cheek (so that only the ear piece is touching the ear, and the rest of the phone doesn't touch the face)? Do you press the phone against your cheek to move the mic closer?
Thanks!
I would appreciate others' experiences as well. Need to decide soon if we're gonna trade the phones in for something else. On that note, any other Tmobile phones worth getting?

To tell you the truth, I don't have a certain way of holding my phone. I guess I usually hold it with the earpiece being the only part of the phone touching me and other times I hold it between my shoulder and cheek with no hands. I've never had anyone complain they couldn't hear me and I have never had a instance where I can't hear my wife load and clear.

I have the same problem. We have 3 sensations and especially the one that I have seems to have a low profile microphone or something. I get complaints all the time that people can't hear me. I believe WiFi calling make it worse for some reason. When I am on WiFi calling people complain more. But in general I believe there is a problem. I think this could also be related to voice tone and the way that voice cancellation optimizes the tone. If we are lucky, there could be a software update in future for this problem.

Update: Success after disabling wifi-calling
Thanks for the hint ceroglu. I disabled wifi calling and it immediately made a world of difference. The difference microphone gain ridiculous. It goes from barely intelligible, to *loud* even with the phone away from one's face. I wonder what causes this? I barely get any cellular signal at work, and the wifi calling would be useful. Wonder if this will be fixed after CM7 or something is release for it?
any fix yet?
I want to add to this, even though it was a while ago. My mother and my girlfriend both have this issue on both of their HTC Sensation 4g's. Has anyone came up with a solution? Neither of them use Wifi Calling. Both are stock roms not rooted, and no matter who talks on the phone they are extremely quiet on everyone elses phone when they call. My girlfriend is going to start wanting another phone here soon, so I was hoping there was a fix rather than spend a ton of money (which we don't have). Thanks

Sensation XE mic
I have also had people complain about it from my Sensation XE. I did a comparison with my old HTC Desire and the difference in call quality is massive. Not only is the mic a lot clearer on the other end but the ear-speaker is a lot clearer at my end too.
The Sensation XE sounds muffled, when people say they can't hear me (or usually "what?!") I speak louder, but actually it just makes it worse for the listener as the sound becomes more unclear/muffled the louder I talk.
Hope there is a fix soon from wither HTC (which I doubt) or a dev

Two Navigation Voices

For some reason Navigation speaks in 2 different voices, sometimes within the same direction. For example, "Turn left in a quater mile' 'onto Main St' would be two different voices, like one is the typical Google voice and one is the Samsung voice. It's not the end of the world, but it is strange. And people in the car have a good chuckle - especially iPhone owners.
I went into languages and input and saw nothing there that would be the cause. And I haven't installed any 3rd party navigation or voice apps. Any ideas? Thanks
I have the same thing with google nav, I'll have a Womans voice then a mans with an American accent right after
No idea why???

This happened to me yesterday....was especially strange having two different voices split the task of yelling at you. LOL
Both my SGS3 and my husband's Galaxy Nexus do this. We haven't figured out why.
Just got back from the beach, and mine did this all the way down and back. 2 different female voices.
Was mildly annoying, but they got me where I needed to be.

Wahaha yesss exactly! I was just on a trip from New Jersey to Maine, and my GS3 and my bf's HTC Evo 3D both had the split-personality navigation voices lol. It would go from the normal perky sounding voice to the older-been-smoking-too-many-years voice... Multiple Personality Disorder, I tell ya!!!
Strange my old Incredible running ICS never had this issue.

Mine does this aswell. Seemed to happen alittle while back. I think they added a more natural sounding voice into the app that sounds great...but its not full baked and old robot woman comes back from time to time.
Its typical google quirk in action...It makes me laugh.
I have noticed this as well (before GPS stopped working on my phone). I was having the original robot woman voice, and other times a young energetic natural sounding one at others. It seemed to happen when switching from one road to the next but other times it was random.
The new voice sounds similar to the Google Now voice, so maybe they are slowly changing things over to the Now voice but bits at a time as things are completed. Either way, at least she will finish what sh is saying BEFORE i have to make the turn now!
Sometimes my goes from regular voice to extremely slow. This usually gets fixed if I exit navigation and turn off/on data before turning it back on again.

He passed it on to the engineers and said he would call me back this weekend to check up. The only problem is where I am now I have to use my work cell phone since I get a bad Tmo reception. He said everything that he could see looked fine. If it's widespread more people should call in to hopefully get it resolved.

Its prolly hd voice as mentioned where you are used to crappy voice and now you have better fidelity.

That is unless it's not working right.
HD voice 2 months ago sounded like this for us in Hawaii, T-mobile CEO John.. after 1 week it was fixed
I could definitely hear the difference when I got my N5. It's only with other T-mobile user. It must be the HD Voice deal from T-mo. I think it sounds fantastic. Seems to be really clear and much better than normal calls. Normal calls sound just fine, but the Tmo to Tmo calls are great.

Yeah, I am not a fan of HD voice on my Nexus 5. I notice it when I talk to my wife and I have to turn the volume way down. It's like the treble is set way too high so the "S" sound especially is way overblown. Not sure if this is the same issue or not but I thought my phone was defective until I did more searching. I wish we could turn it off easily.
