Meenova problems... - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I got my Meenova in the mail about a week ago. Since I have a Nexus 5, I thought this would be perfect. I bought a brand new 16gb, class 10 Lexar sdhc to go with the Meenova. I formatted the card in my computer to Fat32. I have read through the different threads, and the process seems simple enough. Anyways, every time I connect the Meenova to my N5, I get "Preparing USB Storage" in the notification bar. Underneath that it reads "checking for errors". But it never goes away. I've tried Stickmount and also formatting the sd card to exfat and NFTS. I am currently rooted, running Commotio Nightly 2-20-2014. Are there any settings on the phone itself that I need to adjust? Same thing happens with an older sd card too... What do I need to do? Any help would be much appreciated! It bugs me that I can't get this to work properly. Thank you!

Make sure the card is formatted to primary not logical.

Is that just a setting in the format menu on my pc? I'll go check... Thanks.

I don't know what program you're using but it should be there somewhere. When I ran winblows I used this free formatting program:

Ok cool. I'm looking now.

With Windows, I go to my computer, right click on the SD card, go to format. It gives the option for fat32, exfat, nfts I think. Plus the option to quick format or format the longer way. I've tried all of them. The link you gave me brings me to a page with a bunch of programs to download. Sorry, I'm not real computer savvy. I tried another program, but it just kept giving me tons of pop up ads. Thanks for the help though.. I appreciate it.

I use EaseUS Partition Master (http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm) for all my formatting needs on my Windows 7 PC. It's super simple to use. I've used it to format my 2 64GB SanDisk Ultra Micro SDXC cards to FAT32 and I've never hit any issues. Just plug in your SD card to your computer, open up the program, right click on the sd card you want to reformat, select format (or reformat (I can't remember what it says)), select FAT32, and voila. It's super quick to (done in a matter of seconds).

Awful tool. Seen so many bad formats with it.
I wouldn't touch it ever again, even for the simple tasks it should be able to do.

goldcard creation not working multiple cards

Hello all. I am trying this on a Windows Vista ultimate 32 bit and with multiple cards and have not got a "succesful" one yet. The cards i have tried:
1gb SanDisk class 2
1gb transcend class 2
256 stock card from a blackberry
8gb adata class 6
8gb transcend class 6
2gb kingston and none of the cards seems to have work
tried using a built in sd card read and from the device and neither would work.
for example on the 2gb kingston
I formated with windows to fat32 defaults for everything else
i got the cid which was 02544d534430324738ab7b968d009178 right from mytouch screen.
i used qmat to reverse the cid and got 7891008d967bab3847323044534d5402
so the one I should put in to the site should be 0091008d967bab3847323044534d5402 right?
submited that number for goldcard.img
opened image with hex editor and then card thru the card reader in hex editor with read only uncheck. copied the first 0 to 170 offsets and overwrote the actual disk and saved those changes. Everytime then I removed the card and put back in it asked to format the card. and when I do it from the device and unplug the USB cable it says the sd card is blank or not using a supported format. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong. I think I followed the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4289899&postcount=1 to the T and with all these cards something else has to be wrong.
If anyone can tell me what I am messing up it would be greatly appreciated
When you run the Hex editor program are you right-clicking and selecting Run as Administrator? If not, try doing that and report back the results. Also, are you copying "up TO 170" or "up THROUGH 170", complety overwriting the 170 line of data? The instructions worked for me using a 2GB Samsung microSD and a memory card reader built into my printer.
Yeh I am doing thru the 0170 not stopping at the beginning. Not doing run as admin but I have uac turned off but I will try that and report back.
still not working at all just does the same thing. No I am lost since there are alot of people that says that it works. I tried a different kingston card with the cid of 02544d534430324735aae24083007754
the reverse is 5477008340e2aa3547323044534d5402 and what i submited was
0077008340e2aa3547323044534d5402
copied over the hex in admin mode to disk after a fresh format at the start of the process remove and reinsert and did the same thing
for those who have done it successfully did you use vista or xp?
i used windows 7 and it worked fine for me.
Windows 7 here as well. Just posted some information about gold cards on the forums. Check out that post, it might help:

You got me. Doing logical disk not physical disk. Seems like it was a go downloading r3 sdk and will try the rest tomorrow.
Also had the same problem
I also had the same problem until I opened up the HEX editor as Administrator then under the physical drives select your mem. card and do the regular steps of copy and past.
This solved my problem and I hope it solves the problems you all are having.

[Q] Problem with my Micro SD card

I just recently bought a Sandisk 32Gb class 10 microSD card. I got everything set up and I've been using it for a couple of days now.
Last night I just was using msn app on the phone then it just kinda kicked me off and I couldn't use the phone properly and it rebooted and said that the disk was either blank or it has files with different file allocation. ie fat 32 ntfs all that jazz.
I can not mount the card and i cannot format it again.
So scrounging around I found a SD card adapter for the computer and wacked that in the old port. It shows that it's there but it can not be opened.
I also can not view it's properties it just acts as if it's reading for ages.
Then it crashes explorer.
i tried opening it from command
it can't be opened but after opening the path for c becomes
c:\yujuju as if someone had typed it in.
i'm almost suspicious that it was a virus sent over the network through a program on my phone.
are there known viruses capable of making your micro sd cards unreadable?
if it's not a virus and it's just some kind of error on the micro sd card...
are there anyoptions for it? (has anyone made any recovery programs for SD cards you can download using forced mount methods or anything like that?)
I know i can send it back to the place of purchase but it means i have to pay for it to be sent to another state before they'll even look at it and if they don't think it's a manufacturer fault they'll charge me for it and the time spent trouble shooting. I'm a student and I can't really afford to do that
Just a quick note. I'm using cynogen 7.0.3 Desire
it is a HTC bravo. HBoot 6.93.1002
not sure if you'd need anymore detail than that..
please help :3
update// I just was looking around and I read about a website called recovery-filedotnet
and i downloaded the tool. When i try and scan the SD card the program crashes.
I used the demo version... I don't think this is going to end well. sigh.
Anyone with any knowledge that may help with out having to send it back to the company?
Hi,
Sorry, can't help you with recovering contents of your micro SD card. If you don't want to recover the SD card contents, have you tried formatting it on the PC (sorry, I couldn't tell from your posts whether you've tried that)?
There are also known to be many counterfeit micro SD cards out there. Basically, the counterfeit cards don't have the reported storage size, for example they may have 4GB instead of 32GB, so trying to write more than 4GB will result in data being overwritten (and probably trashing of file allocation tables).
I'm not saying yours is a counterfeit, but just something to be aware of.
You could check out h2testw which tests read/write performance, but also checks whether the SD card is the reported size (I think you'll need to format the SD card first, though).
Here's a link to a post I made using h2testsw on a micro SD card:

You cannot open the card on a computer. If you try and open the drive explorer actually crashes and you have to open explorer again using run
If you try and open the drive using command prompt. The drive refuses to open.
You can't access properties of the device either.
I bought it from scorptec. An australian computer company.
wwwdotscorptecdotcomdotau
I opened the Microsoft Management Console and opened storage and when the card is connected to the PC it goes in an endles loop of searching for drives.
This is all very strange if you ask me.
To make it perfectly clear. I can not mount or format from the device, from clockwork mod using ROM manager. I can not mount or format from a PC using the GUI or the command prompt. Using Microsoft Management Console fails.
The other weird thing is my computer was stuffed this morning. I couldn't view the details of my computers properties. The wireless keyboard couldn't be used.
The CPU and stuff was listed as unkown.
I did a system restore to an earlier date logged in to safe mode
Even though it's restored successfully it doesn't recognise that my anti virus is running. I had to enable things in msconfig and my remote access was ENABLED!
I don't know if this was related.
But I'm feeling rather depressed after all this.
I've run spyware and anti virus and nothings picked up. So EH today sucks.
But lets just focus on the SD card for now hey? ^-^
Just to be absolutely certain it's the card, go get ubuntu live cd or gparted live cd, boot from it and try and see if the card works there. Imo it's fubar but last post questions it slightly. If you cannot get any life out of it in gparted send it back.

are they linux operating systems? Are you asking me to try and access the

If so I'll wait till I'm in my programming class tomorrow and just boot the linux OS and see if it works.
Maybe ask my I.T teachers for assistance. But I think I knew I wasn't going to find a solution for this. I just can't afford to pay for postage costs at the moment. I've requested a returned warranty and I'll see what they ahve to say.
Sigh what a god awful day. @shakes tiny little micro SD card and yells [email protected]
(ironically I bought a Sandisk one beause they write the standards for MicroSD cards I believe haha, shot my self in the foot I wish I bought a kingston one now.)
@side note.. is this a picture of things to come? people come to me with computer problems and as a tech when i can't work things out i'll say ever cuss word under the sun in anger? lol i hope there's no customers around when i'm working XD maybe i should go get some anger management classes
Thanks to all who posted replies. Looks like I'll be sending the card back to the company I bought it from. poop!

Possible fix for random reboots! (Poll: What's your Micro SD file system?)

Resume: Use FAT32 when formatting External Micro SD Card and, preferentially, format using the device storage options.
==========
Hi there, guys! After trying hard to discover why and solve some random reboots I found out, after reading about SD Cards causing issues on other devices, something that may help anyone facing this.
When I bought for my Note 3 I also bought a Kingston 32 GB Micro SD Card and formatted it using Windows 7 to exFAT System File, since it was the default option. After facing some hangs, force closes and random reboots for some days, yesterday I decided to make a complete backup and format it using Note 3 itself.
After this what I noticed, when restoring files on Windows, is that the device formatted it to FAT32 System File. And, since then, everything is working nice, without force closes, random reboots or hangs. I know maybe it's early to confirm anything, but I'm confident that running my SD Card on exFAT was giving me trouble!
By the way, I decided to create a poll asking which System File we, Galaxy Note 3 owners, use. We may create a balance and find out if any format is creating any trouble in general.
Cheers!

But there is a limit of 5 minutes, if I'm not wrong. Maybe it is because of the file size limitation, for people using FAT32, since it's the default File System the device chooses when formatting Micro SD.
By the way, I didn't record anything in 4K yet, so I don't know which is the maximum file size we can get. Will test here...

exFAT supports up to 16EB files in size. That's Exabyte.
You could record a whole month non-stop in 4K and not exceed the filesize limit.
Not all android devices support NTFS by default.
I use Fat32 on my MicroSD, which is rather annoying as I want to have blurays on it, but I can't bebothered to reformat all 64GB and copy it all back. So I just keep all 4GB+ files internally, seems to work fine. (Everything possible is on my MicroSD so I have 22GB free internally.)

By the way, I almost forgot the huge internal space and I previously formatted Micro SD using exFAT imagining the day I would put a bigger than 4 GB video file, like once I needed in the past.
Great tip you gave!
Edit: Further, we need to remember that with Note 3, different from Note II, we can again put apps on external storage!

Are there problems by formatting the external card to ext4 too? Don't. Have. A. microSD. Card. Yet. To. Try. It. NOW! arghhhhhh!
EDIT: no need to try, it doesn't work on stock roms.. Nice Google! Really nice!
I used the following command to convert a fat32 external drive to ntfs without losing data: Convert H: /FS:NTFS in command prompt, where H: would be your microsd card's drive letter when used in a Vista+ windows environment and a card reader. Can't guarantee data loss ofcourse so a backup would be wise.

I have a Samsung 64 GB micro SD. It came already formatted with ExFat and fortunately so far so good.
A few years ago I had a faulty card reader for pc. My camera could not recognise the SD card and my phone had random reboots with a micro SD after formatting. It is a possibility.
I don't understand much about this topic and I have not formatted with windows in a while, but I remember I could choose among several parameters (something like block size?). My point is that maybe the note 3 requires a different set of Exfat parameters than windows default ones to work well
It is just an idea.

Well, the point is that I was experiencing a lot of random reboots here and didn't get no one since I used the device itself to format micro SD again.
I don't remember in which file system my Kingston 32 GB Micro SD came by default, but I used Windows 7 to format it on exFAT.
Probably the device itself formats the card the way more compatible possible, bringing stability.
By the way, since a lot of people already voted for exFAT and didn't tell anything about random reboots or issues, maybe this is not a real issue related to all exFAT, but maybe it is for people who used Windows (like myself) to format micro SD.

Can't copy to SD

Morning all. Anyone else have that problem? I can copy to the internal storage just fine, but if I try to drag and drop to the SD card I get the device has stopped responding or its disconnected error. I have windows 8.1, I'm rooted and drivers work fine, adb and fastboot functional, SD card is PNY 64gb xc formatted in NTFS. I also took out the micro SD card and put it in my laptop and was able to write to it just fine, the files even show up through the shield when I put the SD card back in and reconnected to laptop. So who knows what I'm missing?

Yeah, you can't do it through windows. With a file explorer, you could physically get the file to move but it wouldn't run. I believe with the built in option for moving files to SD, it will only move the .apk file, and not the actual data. So if you have a 3mb .apk, and a gig worth of data, it's pretty much useless. There is a tool on the play store called folder mount which basically allows you to swap mount points, and it allows you to save everything to SD, you have to have root for it though.

The built in move to SD will actually move the android/obb file that corresponds to the app, it will also create mount points on the SD for it. I'm not sure if it moves android/data though, I just haven't tried it, most big games use obb files though.
I have some weird problems with my 64GB card formatted to fat32. It all works perfectly for some time, then the SD will become read only to the Shield and I have to format it again. :\ I'm not sure if it's my SD card, the SDXC formatted to fat32, <that and using the built in move to SD, etc.
I treat the SD card like dark magic, when it's working I don't mess with the thing.
I hope that Nvidia releases an update that focuses on better SD support, it seems like they're planning something.

[q] sd card issue

Hi... not sure if this is the correct area to post this, sorry if it isn't. Looking for some insight on some SD CARD issues.... been on Google all day with no luck. Here's my situation:
Recently bought an Asus HD Pad tablet. I read that the max card it'll hold is 32 GB but also read of people that have used 64 without a problem. Since that was something that I was able to do on my tab 2 I went ahead and bought a Kingston 64 GB SDXC. Before formatting to Fat32 I just placed it in and it was recognized just fine, with the full storage amount available and everything. Yesterday I started putting some movies on it but even though the files transfered fine once I went to the tablet they were there but the movies wouldn't run, like if the files were corrupted. From there I assumed I was not gonna dodge the format to Fat32 so I went ahead and did it...I transfered 3 out of 5 movies fine but when trying to add the other two I would gt the error saying that the properties of the file couldn't be transfered. I read up a bit and learned that FAT32 is a bit more limited as far as transferring certain properties from files than NTFS. So I formatted to NTFS. Put all 5 movies and they worked just fine. After this I decided to transfer about 8 gigs of music and some pictures.... they apparently transfered fine but when I go on the tablet and access the music and pictures folders it says NO FILES Are in them. I go to storage info and it does reflect that the 8+ gigs on music and pics are beige used but the file explorer show the folders empty... the movies are still there. If I try to delete the folders from the tablet I get an error that it can't be deleted or permission denied (depending on which file explorer I use). If I connect back to the PC and click the folders I get an error saying the folder is corrupted and can't delete them either. I'm getting the feeling that the SD card was not working flawlessly from the get go but would sure appreciate any input, suggestions, ideas, etc... also wondering if it might be because the SD card size is too big for the tablet.
Thank you and sorry about the long post!

This issue you're having is definitely because of the size of the SD card. Most devices are not made to accept such a large one, and I bet you anything that if you get a 32g SD card, it'll work perfectly.

Yeah that's what I thought so.... question.... you think there might be a way to "shrink" those 64 Gb down to 32, so that the tablet thinks it's a 32?? just to test if that takes care of the problem before buying another SD?
thanks

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, there is!
I don't remember exactly how to do it, but I know this much - first, you need to put the empty SD card into your device. Then, boot into ClockworkMod. Navigate to the Advanced submenu. This is where my memory gets a little fuzzy, but I think there is a "Repartition SD card" option or something like that inside that submenu that, when used properly, can be used to completely resize an SD card.
I did this a good while ago, so that's why I don't remember that well, but hopefully it will work for you.
