Is there a single lock screen app that does just the basics ; show upcoming appointments, missed calls messages and some short cut to few apps ? HTC lock screen did all this and i dont see a single one available for nexus 5.
Cover is nice but shows no notifications
dashclock is nice but android 4.4 for some stupid reason wont show the widget full length and shows the lock pin pad for half the screen by default.
Dashclock has a feature, that collapses all widgets. That will cause it to show all the important stuff, as soon as your screen is unlocked, having you drag the little lockpad on the bottom upwards or tapping on it to bring up the keyguard.
Edit: Also go to settings>lock screen>widgets and check maximize widgets.

i do not see any such option.. My understanding is android in 4.4 forces you(widgets) to run minimize mode by default and a system apk needs a change to fix this https://code.google.com/p/dashclock/wiki/FAQ . did you get around this somehow?
Its probably worth mentioning that I am using beanstalk. I completely derped and forgot other Roms/non-root exist. I really don't know how the situation is, with third-party programs, but I guess you could look around for some app that forces the expanded/maximized view. Sorry I couldn't be of much help.

is the beanstalk rom stable enough to use on my nexus5? basic functions like camera, calls, bluetooth should work fine.. ( CM for nexus 5 is not reached stable release yet)
Almost all roms here are stable enough for everyday use. Just because they aren't labeled stable, doesn't mean they aren't stable.

You can also root and run XPosed Module - there is an option in Gravity Box that forces widgets to be maximized on the lockscreen by default.
Another app you may want to look at is Widget Locker:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.widgetlocker&hl=en
It costs a few bucks, but you can customize it to your liking.
i ended up rooting the phone ( CF auto root) and getting xposed framework and installing the maximize widget module. works fine with dash clock now. Should have done the root day 1 i got my nexus 5

One of the things that I loved about my ASUS Padfone 2 was the near stock UI.
The things that got changed by ASUS were mostly very useful, like the clipboard.
If I long pressed a textbox on my Padfone 2, the usual "paste" icon showed up accompanied by a second icon "clipboard".
When I clicked that icon, a panel slid up from where the keyboard normally is, which had the last copied elements as a small preview, with an additional button to edit the contents. In edit mode, I could delete elements or mark them as permanent (I guess the system would overwrite them when the cashe would be full at some point otherwise).
I miss that useful function on my Nexus 5.
Does anyone know a mod or custom ROM that does that?
I have looked into this on the play store, but the apps there require to run in the background or to switch to a third app to access the copied content.
You will have to look at the ROM feature list, but this is the first time that I have heard of this feature. If my memory is correct there aren't any ROMs with the feature but don't quote me. Third party app is your best alternative. This phone has 2GB of RAM it'll be ok in the background.
edit: You could also check xposed or make a request in the xposed thread.
I use clipper which is still a 3rd app but it works well for me. I use switchr to swipe in from the screen edge to access it.

Thanks for the replies.
I am not worried about the RAM running full, but I don't like to have any more notification icons than necessary.
Looks like I'll have to compromise clean look for functionality.
I wish google implemented the way ASUS did it into AOSP. It was really perfect.
Maybe Cyanogenmod will do this.
Thanks again for your comments.
seriously, I really can't get over the fact that tickers don't show in full screen/expanded desktop mode. I mean, like if you're watching a video, and you get a notification, and it's on silent and there's no notification LED, it would make sense if the statusbar shows up and displays current ticker, wouldn't it? even if you get the vibration and LED? so you know what notification you got? yeah sure you can get an app, since there is "always an app for that", but I would think its fair to say that it should be implemented into stock android. so my question is: why isn't that implemented into current stock android?

Stock android is meant to be basic. And Android is so great because if you want a feature there is almost always a way to implement it, via a mod or app. See for me I would hate it if a scrolling ticker popped up when a notification came in if I was watching a video. That would drive me nuts.
Pa's hover is similar to this and CM has just uncovered a feature like this in aosp code. That's beside the apps available. There are plenty of options already and likely a stock one upcoming. I'd suggest a bit of patience or using one of various ways available to add this feature. There are a lot of things that 'should be in stock android'. Everyone has their opinion. Luckily yours may be added.

I found this app yesterday, and I love it.
It is like pie controls for your unrooted Note 4.
One hand, one swipe access to recent tasks and people, favorite apps and toggles.
It works flawlessly and looks cool as well. Check it out. It's free.
Lazy swipe, ONE HAND and ONE SWIPE,do whatever you want!
Slide out the "Lazy Swipe" from your screen's left or right bottom corner in any situation, you could:
1. Find and open your most frequently used applications without any settings;
2. Find and open your newly installed or recently used application, no longer need to scrolling in your many application list;
3. Switch on and off the commonly used general settings, such as wifi, bluetooth, flashlight etc...
Since this is my first post, I can't post the link to the Play Store for it, or a review of it that led me to it in the first place, but it's "Lazy Swipe".
Loving it! Thanks!
Nice! Thanks for posting!

Super super slow app
I have tried it on z1 compact running cm12.
They changed the name to Omni Swipe. About to try it now.
EDIT: I'm loving this app. I don't even flip screens much anymore. Very easy to use. Thanks.
you know pie launcher can be ran on stock phones now too
so you dont need to be root just sayin
Has anyone using Omni Swipe been having any network issues when trying to download a theme through the app settings? Lately, every time I try to download my favorite theme, or search for a new one, it keeps telling me there's something wrong with my network when everything else is working fine. All I want to do is reapply the 'Hola Awakens' theme I have on my Tab 3, which is also having the same network issue using the same app, but I can't find the install location for Omni. If I could find it, I could probably just copy the theme there. Anyway, the rest of the app works fine, aside from that pesky network thing. Any thoughts?
Hi gang,
I've got an old android device running CM11 that I'm using mainly as an alarm clock.
I'd like to be able to run only the clock app (Gentle Alarm) .... and then if I want to use any other apps like email or whatever, I'd have to unlock the device.
A lock screen widget doesn't quite cut it, as I'd like the full functionality of the alarm clock app (or actually, *any* app I select, for that matter) available, but as soon as I click the home or back button, I'd be taken to my lock screen.
I could see this feature being useful for lots of reasons... say if I had a tablet as a remote control for the TV/stereo that guests could use, yet i didn't want them running other games or apps.
Is this possible?
Am I off my rocker?
So much easier than I thought..... Using CM12+ (Lollipop) I can "pin" an app which will enable it to be the only app which can run - switching to another app or going home presents the user with the lock screen. Perfect.
I feel like a bit of an idiot not realizing this was a built-in feature of the OS. But hopefully this info will help someone else along the way.........
Hi guys,
These apps i am about to introduce will change your phone experience for the better not just our phone for that matter but any Android phone.
1. Immersive Mode Manager(Paid)
This app is a must for every Amoled screen to protect your phone from future screen burn, the other thing is you get to enjoy the full screen experience with every app on your phone. I install this app on all of my Android devices.
I have created a thread long ago doing it manually but i think it's too much of work for people who want an app for that, if you want a manual free alternative check it out.
2. Fluid Navigation Gestures(Free/Pro Features)
This is my second go to app which i was introduced to recently. I will dare to say IMPO that it's the best custom gesture navigation app on Android currently.
By the way our Asus gesture navigation is not bad but i feel it's not polished yet. Also by using Fluid Navigation Gestures we can disable the navigation bar in the keyboard so that is a plus. So go ahead and give it a try.
3. JINA: App Drawer, Sidebar & Folder Organizer(Free)
This app is also a recent discovery and i highly recommend it. What the stock rom or custom rom for that matter lacks to date is the ability to access your apps form any app without going back to the Home launcher to access the drawer. With this app you can achieve that and then some more. The only downside of this app is that it's not noob friendly it will take you a lot of time to figure out all the features it has. The best thing about it you can customize every aspect of it and it's free.
4. Glimpse Notifications, Always On Edge - Edge Lighting or Glance Plus(Free/ Free / Free)
So to my surprise the ROG phone doesn't wake the device when you receive notifications like my previous HTC phone, but don't fret because here where Glimpse Notifications solves the problem that is if you just want the screen to simply light up. If you want more customization then the other two apps are great to check out.
5. Blokada(Free)
You must have an Ad blocker on the list if you are unrooted and definitely one of the best open source and free app out there is this one.
6. Popup Widget 3(Paid)
Now this app will get your phone setup to another level, instead of cluttering your homescreen with widgets how about hiding them and calling them when needed only either through your home launcher gestures or a shortcut sidebar ... . Pretty cool right!. Now this isn't a must have app but i had to mention it because it's absolutely amazing. I have an old video featuring it check it out.
-------
I will keep updating this thread once other apps are discovered or suggested.
-------
*Launcher used: Nova Launcher
*Icon Pack: Pixel Icon Pack
Here is an updated video to showcase everything
Great List ! Much appreciated !
Thanks
Cool "A Liquid Cloud" live wallpaper. I bought the paid version to support the developer, but the free version is great.
Swiftkey Keyboard
Textra SMS
Firefox browser
I used to use a third party camera, but I like the default camera and love playing with Google Lens
I used to use Apex launcher, but they have gone downhill lately forcing bloatware on you. I might stick with the default. I like the default theme.
I have installed Immersive Mode Manager! Very cool!
is there any app or setting mod that allows can turn the RGB /aura lighting into a visualizer for audio/media playback ? like the audio visualizer chroma app available for razer chroma windows on windows platform ?
