Is there any way to possibly make a rooted Nexus 5 continue to receive OTA updates from Google?
If so, please advise the best way
Thanks

If you're only rooted and haven't changed any system files you will get and be able to install ota's

So in this case I can still receive OTA updates from Google even with the bootloader unlocked and custom recovery by just leaving the stock firmware/ROM on the phone?

Ok, the Nexus 5 is my first android. And just as I learnt pretty much everything an intermediate user needed to kno (rooting, launchers, clocking, ROMs, kernels, that stuff), there comes another problem. 4.4.3. I've been hearing rumours about the new KitKat version, and it scares me! Coming from iPhone it was pretty simple, click update. What should I expect from android? Is it the same process of "New update, update now?" Click yes and its done? Or is it more complicated then that?
Side note: I'm rooted with custom ROMs and kernels, so is it like an iPhone jailbreak, will it f**k up my phone if I straight up update or do I have to wipe beforehand?
Sorry that's its such a nooby question, I just want to have knowledge of what to expect.
Thanks for putting up with me! ;D

You can find all answers here:

If your stock - you will get it OTA and you just need to click. But if not got to the above thread.
If you're running a custom ROM you get updates from the developer, not Google. If you were running stock, you just go to settings\about phone\system updates.
Your ROM should update to 4.4.3 within a couple weeks, so you can be patient or go back to stock.

Yup, but you probably need a stock recovery to update. There are some guides in General how to update with root etc

Hi,
Sticky in this section, where you posted: [INFO] Nexus 5 OTA Help-Desk.
EDIT: too late...
So I just ordered an AT&T Note 3 and from what I'm reading it appears that I should be hoping it does NOT come with KK preinstalled, correct?
Everything I see tells me that if I'm on KK there is no current root method, yes?
Also, if I am able to root am I able to use the custom Roms available? I'm coming from a Nexus 5 so everything seems much more complicated over here ?

Sure you can root KK roms, but KNOX will be triggered to 0x1 and warranty could be voided (depending on where you live). Btw i came from a N5 too

If I don't care about voiding my warranty can I accept the official KK update and still get root?
Also, how do you like it compared to the N5? Did you keep your N5 or sell it?

Where do you live? You can download the latest available 4.4.2 rom from here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/2/ and flash it with Odin 3.07. After that flash a custom recovery and then flash the latest superSU.zip in recovery and you`re set. You can also flash a prerooted custom rom straight with a custom recovery. I sold my N5 cause i`am excited about the coming OnePlusOne phone and i might just try that one.

Yeah as long as the one I bought ships with JB still I can root and then update to KK it seems. If it comes with KK I'm without root for now I guess.
We'll see! Fingers crossed

KK, good luck
I flashed the latest nightly yesterday. Everything was great. Then last night I had a total inability to make or receive phone calls. I thought it might just be an install issue so I did a reinstall and unfortunately same resuts. Im using radio m8974a-2.0.50.1.13..... is this the issue. It works perfectly on stock 4.4.3 and im rooted. I like the rom but need my phone to work. Any suggesions?

If relevant, does your carrier require anything special? (e.g. Sprint users need to flash a fix for APN or something, I wouldn't know as my carrier doesn't need anything)
Was it working at any point in time while on the ROM, or was it like that on first installation?

I use at&t it worked at first for about an hour then stopped. I think it has something to do with the new 4.4.3 stuff. 4.4.2 was fine.
BTW this also happened to a few people on another custom ROM when they went from 4.4.2 to .3. They had to revert to stop also.

Maybe it's just the specific ROM? I suggest you try another first. I have no issues with 4.4.3

I saw on the Internet that KitKat 4.4.4 with security bug fixes has been launched only for nexus 5 through OTA but when I check for updates, the phone says your system is up to date. I'm running stock android 4.4.3 unrooted. Why is this happening? Any help regarding this?
P.S. - I don't want to update using factory images. Only using OTA. Want to know why my phone is unable to get the update.
Thank you

They roll out in stages. You'll have to be patient or check out the ota help in the general forum and download the ota zip

Floating around here are stock 4.4.4 zips you can flash.

Don't worry. I've not received it either. Google sucks with updates and gives absolutely no change log or support. Apple walks all over them in this area. I've read it may take two to three weeks for everyone to get it.

and thats why on update day at apple it takes 12+ hrs for the update to download because their servers are hammered.
pick your poison.
I'd definitely take the staged rollout. No question. Then again, I never wait for an ota. There are plenty of other options available if you're not patient enough to wait. Even waiting for the ota, you'll still get the update before most other devices. Some won't get it at all. Wait, or go a different route. Simple.

I don't understand why people who are so desperate for the update don't just install a custom recovery and flash the zip.
Or just adb sideload like a savage.
