I use advanced task killer and minutes later I see MP3 Store, and Messages running. Before I saw a few others. Are they set to start running in memory for some reason? Not sure if they eat up much juice, but I wonder if I can make a list of certain ones and disable their start up somehow. Is there a task killter that blocks startups?
same here we need something to block these apps
Messages is required to recieve MMS (Even if you use handcent or chomp or something else as your main client). We tried removing that once in the hero forums and it caused ALL sorts of problems and force closes)
The mp3 store is usually ok to remove though.

Thanks codemonk,
Do you know that setting in advance task killer is that says "auto kill level"? It is set to disable now, but what does it do? Thanks.

I'm not sure...I avoid task killers as a rule (I installed one earlier to test something for an earlier thread and uninstalled afterwards once I got my info).
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/ - This should provide some good info on it.
The better solution, especially for apps that you don't intend on using, is uninstalling the app (there's a whole thread talking about which ones are safe to remove).

yeah, that is a great idea. I imagine if I wanted it back I could just install it again. Thanks Codemonk.
Why do you need those apps not running? Android will kill them if it needs more memory.
Why are people obsessed with killing stuff? It's not like your phone runs better with 192mb of free memory vs 163mb...
it actually does, as well as lets the battery last longer since it isnt using as much processing power

Let the phone run for a good 12 hours. I was down to 42MB free basically idling and only using Handcent. Killed a few tasks and back up to 175 and everything is snappy again.
I don't like having to use a task killer, I didn't have to with my N1.
maybe there will be an app like Scotty for windows 7. I check and a bunch of bloatware starts on it's own. It's all marketing bs. When there is a nice root stripped down, with all the nice stuff enabled I'll do that.
download startup auditor from the market. great little app to select and unselect which apps you want to load when the phone powers up. only costs $0.99 usd

So if I leave it to no apps, will it load up with 0 apps running? Will it also prevent apps from randomly starting after phone is already on? Sounds like a nice app.
Unless startup auditor disables the service there is a list of apps that will randomly start up at times. I went into the application settings and apps like MP3 store don't have an option to uninstall.
I have used task killer to kill all apps and within minutes some start again.
"thecodemonk" why do you not use a task killer. I have only had an Android phone about 24 hours now and got a lot to learn.
First thing being how to enable tethering.
I have mine set to "safe" and it auto closes things when screen goes black.
Make sure you "IGNORE" certain apps... like the clock or else your alarm wont work... I almost over slept
I have the following set to ignore:
Messages
Handcent
clock
gmail
Mort Music player
Fastbright
Check out the application "Autokiller." This comes with preset values (optimum, moderate, aggressive, etc.) so that apps will be killed off once your free memory drops below a certain point. This app works great, but it does REQUIRE root to function and must be rebooted to finish applying the settings. Also lists all apps, processes, and services which can be killed off manually as well.

It is in market, search "autokiller". Requires root access, but I can confirm it is working fine.
Wanted to add that I am annoyed by programs that I never intend to use running in the background. From recovery I used Android Commander to quickly select and delete every .apk in /system/app that I never wanted to see again.
Helo guys saw this topic and was over at androidcentral and saw this article which talks about an app that would kill any app that autostarts.
won't let me post links as i'm a new user, but go to androidcentral and look for the article about the app autostarts or just google "autostarts"
using task panel to kill the "junk" like amazon and mp3 store- also any program that doesnt attach itself to things like facebook or messages - i use skyfire so i have set that to autokill but leave the "internet" running..
i also use this to switch between apps running.. having to hit back back back or even going to home then program list then finding it is a long process.. for example ...
i get a handcent message - go into the threaded sms- type and im done - holding down the home screen doesnt pop all the programs up - therfor i set task panel up to stay on my status bar and hit it then go to the program i want.
I cannot for the life of me figure out where I am going wrong.
Youtube videos and all online tutorials and guides suggest it should be as simple as going to towelroot.com, clicking the lambda, getting a prompt to download the .apk, install it, let it run, let the phone reboot, and install SuperSU.
But for whatever reason, that doesn't work for me. If I click the lambda in Chrome, I get a prompt to choose what browser to open it in, and selecting Chrome just asks me again after it opens a new tab. It never downloads. If I choose to open it in firefox, FF will render in the browser as if it were a text file. Going back to Chrome, if I long-hold the icon and choose "Save Link", I can get a copy of tr.apk downloaded. Alright, so far so good. Let's just run it... right? WRONG. "Can not open file". My other .apk's like F-Droid opened absolutely fantastically fine.
OK, I'll work around this using a .apk installer. Go over to Google Play, grab "APK Installer" (1.4 mb or so one), run that, select the .apk file to install aaaannnnddd, I get to the usual screen showing what's asking to be installed and what permissions it wants. Yay! I've seen this page before! Aaannd... The Install button cannot be pressed. It cannot be pressed in landscape or portrait. Only cancel works.
I have not found anyone else with all my searching that has had the same difficulties as me. Hell, as the forum checked my title to find similar threads, there's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785869 which shows this guy managed to install towelroot just yesterday.
Anyone have any clue what to do to get a root without the troubles of wiping? This is absolutely tremendously frustrating.
Edit: I had to kill an app's process. I suspect it's Twilight that had to be killed - an app kinda like f.lux on Windows that overlays the screen with a warm tint to make nightviewing nicer. I ended up killing AdBlock, Youtube, Google Music, and a few others. I was then able to install the .apk using APK Installer from the Play store. And once I had root and superuser installed, I had to go into the superuser settings and disable the Tapjacking Protection (or alternatively kill Twilight - that's why I suspect it was a problem in the first place, as there's non-changeable tapjacking for apk installations) and I could finally grant programs superuser permissions.

Yep. Any screen overlay will interfere with the install button.
I, the original author of Prevent Running, now introduce Brevent.
In short, Prevent without Root. You can get it from here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.piebridge.brevent or http://piebridge.me/br/, and source code: https://github.com/brevent/Brevent
There are several ways to prevent running for apps:
- Force-Stop, will set stopped state, no static broadcast, sinde Android 3.2, requires android.permission.FORCE_STOP_PACKAGES
-- can granted to privileged apps, /System/PrivApp
-- adb shell has it, Brevent can use
- App-Standby, since Android 6.0, requires android.permission.CHANGE_APP_IDLE_STATE
-- only granted to Framewok apps having the same singature with framework.apk
-- adb shell has it, Brevent can use
So as you can see, Brevent working on the adb shell, having the shell permission, and can do a lot of things.
Furthermore, Brevent use directy android hide methods, instead using dumpsys, am, cmd and so, more effective.
However, there is one restriction, as the permissions cannot be granted to apps, so Brevent requires you run the adb after every boot.
But, Brevent requires no-reboot to undate Brevent Server. And phone should be use, not for reboot.
Executing on everyreboot not good enough cos not with computer everytime. u can create something like Airfrozen. Similar function but with root
Hi, If I'm rooted, should I keep Prevent running 2.3.2 or is Brevent better?
Brevent not working
I execute the ADB command and it worked very briefly, but now it continuously says the server is not running. I try re-executing the ADB command, which says the server has started, but the app doesn't recognize it and still shows server not responding. Sometimes it will work and I'll start to mark apps to freeze, but then while doing that the "server not responding" message pops up again. Any ideas why?
Works great on Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge running Android 7.0!
*The only drawback is you have to go through ADB to enable it everytime you restart the phone.
Great app, but I have a problem. Play Store doesn't install any app, but when I restart the phone, it does. I suppose that an update of these app, it stop running a Google service.
What happened to the root version?

If you have rooted, it's possible. And Brevent now supoort root mode as experimental feature.
If you have no root, it's not possible.
And there is some way like device administrator to gain some permission.
However, there is only a device administrator. And device administrator has no the permissions to standby / force-stop other apps.

Root version is the same with adb version, it can only avoid adb.
However, there are some issues on root version due to selinux and other issues.
For example, some rooted devices cannot dumpsys, which is required by Brevent.
If you have rooted, you can try root version.
And if it doesn't work, just create an issues on github: https://github.com/brevent/Brevent

You *may* brevent some apps shouldn't be brevented, like packageinstaller or defcontainer.
I suggest you don't brevent system / framework apps if you're unsure.
For myself, I have brevented play store, and can install apps, and the play store can get update.

If you can use Prevent running 2.3.2, you probaly use Android 6.0-.
If you're tired of rooted / unlock / Xposed, you can try Brevent.
If you want to standby apps, you can try Brevent.
And IMO, Brevent is more intelligent:
1. back / home / recents list, both of them works well
2. standby, Brevent works greate.
3. UI. I think Brevent is nicer.
And please note, there are more users prefer Brevent to Prevent Running.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.piebridge.brevent&hl=en: less than 50,000 in one year, and no support.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.piebridge.forcestopgb&hl=en: more than 50,000 in short months.
There is no support from me for Prevent Running.
And, I'm sorry for old Prevent Running users, I shouldn't transfer it.

Just be careful when brevent system apps.
On my pixel, it cost more battery when brevented all system apps.

Brevent only do simple things, force-stop / app-standby apps, nor other things. So, hold home to lock screen is not the things that Brevent should do.
Hi, I have another problem. I updated the phone software and I can't re-activate Brevent. I have this message. I have a S7 edge with Nougat stock.
EDIT: I fixed the problem. I didn't read the new command.

Previous command use /sdcard, in aosp, apps should have write permissions.
However, in some rom, Brevent has no permissions.
So I switch to "/data/data", and it's shorter.
Another question, Is possible contribuite to translate your app? I would like translate to spanish (if available)
i was under the impression it's generally not recommended to force quit apps and let Android handle them? i understand some apps misbehave, but over time would force quitting be bad?
Hi guys. Now that we have root for the 2017 fire tablet HD, let's share the best apps, tweaks, mods, modules, optimizations etc to get the most out of the tablet.
I just rooted my HD 10 and think this thread is a great idea.
The first thing I usually do after getting root is to install AdAway to block most ads:
https://f-droid.org/repo/org.adaway_56.apk
I want use Nova as the default launcher. Is there a way to disable or uninstall the Fire launcher completely with root? The Hijackthis utility kind of works, but once in a while the Fire launcher will still show when pressing the home button.
Update: I found out how to disable the Fire launcher following the instructions from this thread here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/development/tips-tricks-root-t3310569
It appears that many of the tips for the older gen HD 10 tablets also apply to the 2017 model. The thread I mentioned in my previous post has instructions on how to disable Fire launcher and Amazon service that are safe to disable via adb. Also I recommend installing Google Play and disabling OTA services using the script in this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/general/tool-disables-ota-lockscreen-install-t3715320
I also installed some of my favorite root apps such as Titanium Backup and Kernel Adiutor. Also grabbed modded Youtube with no ads (non-root) here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71133073&postcount=3
How do we disable all Amazon apps that aren't necessary to get the fastest, smoothest user experience?
Is there a way to change the lock screen and replace it with one that supports pattern unlock instead of a PIN?
Is there a way to permanently disable all Amazon system apps that may launch at startup and run in the background? I want to disable them to get maximum speed and performance from the device. Maybe what we could do is find an app that shows us what's currently running in the background and using up ram, and then figure out a way to permanently disable and or Uninstall them.
These are the system processes that I found running. There are quite a few Amazon-related processes here. Have a look.
The Amazon-related process that I've identified are:
Wake Word Service
System UI
Amazon Metrics Server Application
Fire Content Manager Service
Here Positioning
Precog
Identity mobile platform
Fire Amazon platform
Fire Amazon communication services
Audio stream provider service
Amazon webview metric services
Whisperplay daemon
Documents
Content support manager
Amazon device settings
Crash monitor
Documents
Read the posts in this thread (started by DragonFire1024) to get an idea about what can (not) be uninstalled.
We just gained root, and we do not yet have a reliable method to backup/restore partitions. I would urge you to err on the side of caution and, if you really have to, just control the apps that autorun. You can use the startup manager in ROM Toolbox Lite or All-In-One Toolbox to find out what's running at boot.
Before you start, backup your apps+data using TiBu.
Have you tested the recovery procedure detailed in this post? What's your fallback option if your 10 HD gets bricked? All things considered, a reasonably snappy tablet running some bloat is better than a brick you can't recover from.
These are the apps that I currently have installed on my fire tablet. Feel free to share your apps, too!
Guys,
So I'm using the free version of nova launcher, and one thing that I don't like is that I don't get app notifications. For example, if I get a like on Facebook or a message on Facebook messenger, there's no notification alerting you. Usually you'd see like a "1" on the app icon signaling that there's one new message. Apparently that's because I'm using the free version of nova launcher and the paid version has this functionality built in. I don't want to buy the paid version only to have it not work. Can anyone confirm that the paid version of nova launcher will give me notifications on the app icons, or is this just not supported on fire OS?
*UPDATE*
I think these things are called "badges".
I have rooted my Fire HD 10 2017, installed SuperSU and now of course it does not pass safety net anymore
As I was playing some games from Google Play on the tab, this kind of annoys me, but is no dealbreaker at all.
Has anybody made some experience with hiding root / magisk or something else on the Fire HD 10?
i had posted this information on the main 'rooted fire hd 10 7th generation' thread already but thought it was quite useful regarding nova launcher, playstore and using a child profle:
if you want to use use widgets with nova launcher, just convert nova to a system app. the easiest way i found to achieve this is using the link2sd app.
to use google playstore in a different user profile (e.g. parent profile with child restrictions, as i don't like the freetime child profile) you can also convert playstore to a system app (and clear dalvik dalvik cache, also with link2sd). it showed up in the fire launcher on the other profile right after a reboot. just needed to log in again.
maybe you can use it on a freetime profile as well like that (launch it from GoToApp), but i won't try it out now.

I will test this out today and let you know if I got it to work. The only thing is, I don't have a child profile, I have a secondary adult profile.
Once I got root I put adaway, titanium backup, modded pandora. I also put on the viperaudio. Can do that by adding busybox via https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.meefik.busybox&hl=en
and you'll also need to use something to set selinux to passive for viper to work. I did this by installing Kernal Auditor https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grarak.kerneladiutor&hl=en
I used Kernel Adiutor to emulate init.d and used the below script and it works to make it permissive on boot and viper driver shows enabled to confirm it
#!/system/bin/sh
setenforce 0

The play store hack didn't work for me after following your instructions regarding link2sd. The play store doesn't appear on my other login account.
hm, that is strange. i did two other things before i had root:
trying to install the 4 apks on the other profile, but only the first 2 could be installed: com.google.android.gsf.login.apk and com.google.android.gsf.apk.
and i entered the following command via adb in the main profile:
adb shell pm grant com.google.android.gms android.permission.INTERACT_ACROSS_USERS
but ony after coverting all of the 4 required apks to system apps it worked. did you convert all 4?
if not, maybe one of the steps before make the difference?

Well now the play store shows up on the other login, but when I tap on it, nothing happens. Also, in link2sd, there's no option to clear "dalvik cache." Only "clear cache" which I did.
I notice that ever since I turned the 4 Google apps into system apps with link2sd, my Facebook app no longer works. It gets stuck in the screen.:

I'm experiencing the same problem with my pixel 2 xl. Only have gravitybox and native clipboard modules. Did you ever find a solution?
Try running this line in terminal (su):
Code:
cmd package bg-dexopt-job
If that seems to fix the crashing, try creating a Tasker task that runs it every morning when you're not using the phone, e.g. around 5 or 6 am.
If you're having issues with Facebook Messenger crashing, you'll need to go into the /data/app/com.facebook.orca/oat/art/ folder and delete the base.odex file. Alternatively, you could add the following line in a second task that follows the first:
Code:
rm /data/app/com.facebook.orca*/oat/arm/base.odex
Running those two tasks, in that order, will dexopt all apps as well as delete Messenger's base.odex file should it reappear.
If you have other apps that continue to crash after the dexopt, you could try adding further tasks which delete their corresponding base.odex files after the dexopt process. Just be aware that any apps without a base.odex file will have a much slower initial load time, and that not all apps respond well to having their base.odex file removed. Proceed with caution.
Android's built in maintenance jobs include dexopt, but it's impossible to know precisely when it will execute, hence the task forcing it followed by the task deleting the base.odex file. Also, timing it so that it runs within an hour of waking up and removing the phone from the charger gets it as close as you can to ensuring that your own tasks aren't rendered moot by the system's built in maintenance tasks.
Some people also have luck using the ARTDeoptimizer Xposed module for apps that crash with Xposed installed, but I am not one of those people. It seemed to have no effect and I found I had much better, if not perfect luck just removing the base.odex files myself manually or via Tasker profiles.

Native Clipboard may be your problem. That is one module I had to give up on as it seemed to constantly cause crashes in incompatible apps on Oreo.
