Does the N5 require some kind of special host cable to be able to read an external micro SD card via a card reader? Can't seem to get mine to read or mount an external card at all? (32 GB model)

Standard otg cable.
What custom rom / kernel / app are you using to mount?

Sorry, wasn't aware that this kind of question wasn't appropriate for "General"... If one of the mods could re-locate the thread to Q&A it would be appreciated...

Not using a custom rom or kernel just yet... Just a bog standard Nexus 5 right now. Why doesn't it just mount itself with the stock kernel/rom? All the tablets I have used with Android v4.x.x already do?

Take a look at this thread as it covers a super compact micoSDcard reader and the various mounting software you will need to access the storage.

I did my own review of the Meenova OTG micoSDcard reader within the thread including pictures with my N5.

Does anyone know if there will be a mod to allow use of a file system that supports large files like NTFS or exFAT? Currently the MicroSD can only be formatted as FAT32 (Sucks bigtime).
Yes it does. I've resorted to storing to the internal storage and external harddrives for now.

Me to its very slow and sometimes hangs,i like the windows ntsf, its alot faster.
NTFS support android tablet?
You just need NTFS support in the kernel.
Most of the ROMs on this forum have this already. Install one of them.
NTFS works everywhere, even microSD card, on the Transformer.
Anyone know how to format a card to NTFS using android or honeycomb?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Interesting. I have a class 10 16gb microSD card, and I am pretty sure its formattet for fat32. I guess I will have to try and see if it becomes faster with NTFS

How can I find these ROMs?
Is there any ROM or kernel already made for X10 with Android 2.3.3 that supports NTFS?

You lost?
We all love XDA and want to keep the threads organised so post your X10 queries in the X10 threads so this one doesnt get bogged down with irrelevant nonsense.
Your confusing the noobies.....please stop
My tab (GT 3100 running stock 4.1.2 on stock kernel) won't let me mount storage higher than 4 GB via usb otg.
Is there any way to enable it?

I have the same problem. Have been trying to connect several flash discs to my GT-P3100 (RIPPER ROM V3, 4.1.2) with the OTG USB cable.
Mostly the tablet did not react. After getting the same error as shown in your screenshot I had to disconnect the OTG cable from tablet(not only the flash disc) From 5 different ones only one worked (8GB FAT32), but not all time. The others are different capacity, but also FAT32.
Is there any problem in the Android 4.1.2 on this tablet regarding OTG?

Any chance of getting this to work on a Nexus 4? Someone gave me one the other day.
Thanks in advance!
Not without a custom kernel that supports otg and a powered otg cable. I use ziddey's kernel and a portable charger to use my flash drive on the go. Works great

You could do it, but you would need to do some fancy cable splicing to make a battery provide power for the card reader and a kernel with the OTG patches
I know thats not the same card reader....but it is possible this work only with custom kernel?

Its possible only with a custom kernel that has the otg patches.
They never enabled it and that goes the same with the Nexus 5,
Google really pushes users to use cloud service. Lol
The galaxy phone supports otg out of the factory.
But crap that touchwiz stuff! That's the only thing I don't like about Nexus devices, no micro sd slot and no otg support.
But hey we do get pure android !
Thanks for the reply

So I'm veery close buying this wonderful moto g device, but storage is my biggest concern. Luckly I have seen that usb otg is supported at moto g, but some sites (including GSM arena) say it has only USB host(?) support. Does moto g have fully working usb otg? I mean that there is possibility to transfer files between phone and memorystick and so on. Because of the lack of SDcard slot, usb otg is very important feature for me. I just want to make this thing clear before I order the device from amazon. Thank you, answer would be highly appreciated!

Yes, you can transfer to and from usb memory stick. USB on the go works fine on Moto G

really can you transfer?? cause i bought an usb OTG cable, and i only can read my usb stick, not write it.
(i have my stock rom and i'm not rooted, so i'm thinking thats the problem but i'm not sure)

Pretty sure you can do both. I will double check that and confirm tonight.
Depends, some here can some can't. I can't write but can read and mount OK.

Yep it's different for everyone. I can't write but read and mount, unmount. I'm on stock rom not rooted. Tested with music and power amp.

Try this app + Total Commander:

It works perfect for me. I couldnt even mount with many apps and this one can mount, read and write every time.

You need a class 10 that matches your internal storage. 16 or 32 gb.
it's worth a shot seeing if any of those work, it's not like you're going to break anything. Report back if you can get it to work.

Read and write speed.
The whole idea is to trick the phone into thinking it's your internal SD card, so you need a very fast one to make it think it's internal.
