Hi,
Since with Android you have a choice for your calls to go thru Google Voice (totally - only international or not at all) I was wondering how it works with AT&T.
If you call another AT&T cell phone it doesn't count in your minutes plan but what if you go trhu Google Voice? Is that consider like a landline to a cell phone? Or AT&T "sees" that you are using a AT&T cell and count the time has cell to cell ?
I hope I was clear in my explanation
I honestly don't know.
This has been discussed before on AT&T's forums.
The question on those forums were posed as: " If I use Google Voice and add that phone number to my "A-List" could I technically get unlimited calls to anyone?"
I'm pretty sure the answer was no. And therefore, I don't think AT&T sees the Google Voice number as anything but a forwarded call.
So if the calls are forwarded, you pay according to where it is forwarded.
Example: All of these go THROUGH Google Voice:
I call another AT&T cell from my AT&T cell. Same network = FREE M2M
I call a landline from my AT&T cell, no M2M, pay for call
This is also equal for when someone dials your Google Voice number.
It does leave questions on how international call are worked out. But I think that is on Google's end, not AT&T's

I am not sure that is correct, because when you place a google voice call, gv is actually calling you and then calling the other party and joining the calls. So for international you have a incoming local call and you get to pay GV low rates. I have a PBX at home that uses free incoming minutes and therefore with GV free unlimited calling.
Since we have android the callback is in the background, unless you have the update that allows you to call a GV number with a access code assigned to each contact so you don't have to wait for the callback and have a much faster connection.
just checked my usage... bad news...
making calls through GV counts against your minutes... each of my GV calls is going to a GV number and then going to the party i called (even though they're on AT&T as well)...
so, if you're calling an AT&T subscriber, just use your normal dialer... if you're calling any other carrier subscribers (or landlines) use either, depending on what number you want shown on potential caller ID's
just place the call through the GV web app then.
The way to get the free unlimited calls is to go into GV settings and have all calls from GV display on your phone as the GV number. You then give out the GV number as your main number, all incoming calls hit your phone and the number they came from is GV.
Also, when you make out outbound calls, you use GV to set up the call - it rings your cell and comes from your GV number, then connects to whoever you call.
If the GV number is one in your circle, or faves, or whatever ATT calls it, then all are free - but of course you lose caller id on incoming calls.
I have a Sprint data card that I use Skype with. A one and a half hour call through Skype only uses 25MB. Sprint is not able to "see" that I am using VoIP because Skype encrypts the data. This way I make somewhat free calls and its real cheap considering the data from my alloted 5gb. I am anxiously waiting for Skype to start working on ATT Smartphones. I did wonder how GV would work but I'd prefer Skype and use my Skypeout number.

Exactly, this also give you the option to press "4" during the call and record the call at GV!

Yeah that is the best way to do it if you want to do a regular voice call. I didn't know ATT had the fav option!
Also what I do is use freepbx at home in a VM with a GV setup so I can make free VOIP calls to anyone in the US. I have voip phone at home and voip software on my phone. I still use GV for voicemail.
In this case i use SIPDROID.
AT&T added a fav option for higher dollar plans. I am not sure what they call it, but they did it keep up with VZW and TMo
at&t's version is called A-List. IIRC, you need to be on a $60 monthly or higher plan. You get to list 10 numbers on your account (not per line) and all in/out calls to those 10 numbers are treated as m2m...
So I had my phone set up to where the voicemail forwards to my Google Voice, and had it working the other day. Now when people call they get a message saying that the wireless number you called is not in service.
I've tried a couple tests and here's what i came up with.
1 - Dial my cell phone directly, phone rings 5 or 6 times then gets the wireless subscriber number not found message.
2 - Dial my cell, then slide to reject the call on the cell, get busy signal
3 - Dial my Google Voice number, which then rings my cell, I let the cell ring a few times, then it goes to Google Voicemail like it should.
I have the Captivate set up to use Google Voice as the voicemail provider, and I have my google voice number entered as the voicemail number.
Is there a common setting or issue that I missed, or do I have a real problem on my hands? My phone is rooted, but still efault ROM.
I had something similar happen to me when I switched from my iPhone. I think it has to do with the number of rings before google voice picks up. For some reason they set it to 25 seconds and that's not changeable; however, you can lengthen the number of rings before your voicemail carrier takes over. Try changing it to 30 seconds with the instructions below:
1. On your phone, dial *#61# and click Send.
2. Some information should be displayed: number that the calls are being forwarded to and the delay before the forwarding engages.
3. Write down the number (including +1)
4. Dial **61*+1xxxyyyzzzz*11*30# and hit Send. +1xxxyyyzzzz is your google voice number, 30 is the delay in seconds. The delay can be set in 5 second increments, 30 is maximum.
5. Dial *#61# to verify that the new settings are active.
This worked for me, although you do have to wait a ridiculously long number of rings before it forwards it to GV. Nothing we can do about that until Google lets us mess with their 25 second time limit.
I'm thinking a lot of people will hang up before letting it ring that long. Its sort of like that saying "A watch pot never boils".
Searched and had no luck
Does anyone know how to setup google voice to work with your ATT # not just your google voice #
Did you try installing the Voice app to your phone?
Upon initial launch of the app, the user is walked through the setup, including whether or not you want to use Google Voice to make/receive calls and if you want to use it for your voicemail. It even takes you to the screen on your phone to change the preference from carrier to Google Voice and provides you with the number to use.
How to you reduce the number of rings before going to Voice's voicemail?

Visual Voicemail works by forwarding calls from your phone to your GV number. There is no other option. The forwarding settings are on your phone - so your phone knows to forward calls if you don't answer, the phone is off, or you push reject button.
Install GV on your phone
Login to your GV account with GV phone app
I have not had any luck getting the app to configure my phone, so i go to the settings page of GV in my desktop browser, set up my mobile there - it gives you the dial code to put in your phone to configure forwarding.

It is a carrier setting, I can't remember if you have to call or if you can change this from your phone - i think you have to go to AT&T online or on the phone and have them change it.

Google Voice voice mail does not require a GV number. You only need GV number if you want to use the free SMS feature of GV.
The first time you install and launch GV app on your phone, it will walk you through the steps to set up the proper voice mail settings on your phone. I remember I have to punch in some numbers manually by the prompt of GV.
The free SMS texting saves me $$ but you need to be aware of the fact that GV SMS does not support short codes. So it won't work if you want to vote on American Idol etc.
Also, you have to go into google voice on your computer and there's a number you have to dial on your phone to tell your carrier to forward unanswered calls to google's service. I forget where it's located on the google voice website.
You can dial that number and enter the codes and it will use google voice for voice mail even if you have or have not installed google voice app on the phone.
Call customer service? Go to the ATT website? What? You don't have to do any of that junk.
It couldn't be simpler. Go to the following website:
https://www.google.com/voice
You have to click on "Activate Voicemail" in settings. It tells you what to do.
Install the app on your phone. Follow the instructions.
Choose "Don't Make Calls Using Google Voice" and you can continue using your ATT number.

Signing up for GV gives you a GV number even if you never use it. All those numbers you punched in - they were forwarding your calls to your GV number and the only thing the GV number does is answer and record voicemail.
If you go to your phone settings (on your phone) you will see that unanswered calls and rejected calls are forwarded to a phone number - that is your GV number.
More than one person asked how to set up Visual Voicemail, or expressed their inability to get it working.
No one posted clear instructions on how to set it up.
So I did.
Please don't tell me what I did and didn't read. Thanks.

As you can see (maybe not) references to AT&T and customer service had nothing to do with setting up Google voice - no one ever said they did. But your response connects the two together.
So if you had read the original question from Joe K. you would realize that no one was telling anyone to call or go to AT&T to set up Google Voice.
I agree it has little to do with the original question.

Thanks guys sometimes i'm an idiot.
so, i registered for google voice in the past and im thinking about actually using it now for the new thunderbolt since i wanted a new number anyway. has anyone used google voice on verizon before? what should i keep in mind when making the decision or not? does it ring a ton of times before going to voicemail like it did on sprint? have there ever been any issues with verizon and google voice or don't they mind if you use it? thanks.

I've had it for years. No issues on VZW. Just like your normal number. Voicemail is transcribed for you, though it's not very accurate. You can usually figure out what they're trying to say. If not, you can play the message and listen to it.
I've been very happy with Google Voice on my Android phones. The voice-to-text isn't as good as some other systems I've seen, but it works well enough.
Download the app and give it a try. I think when I set my up on the TB, it gave an error complaining about being able to configure VZW. That was a new error I hadn't seen on my Inc. You may need to manually configure the "no-answer" call forwarding to your GV number. The setup should configure your phone to dial your GV number when you hit the 1 button for "Voicemail".
Give it a try!
Google Voice is the greatest thing since sliced bread, especially if you have multiple phones...one number to rule them all!
I'm testing the theory right now, but on T-Mobile people with NOT-unlimited plans were assigning their GV number as one of their Fave 5 (Friends & Family on VZW) and then telling the phone to make and receive all calls via GV, in effect giving them unlimited minutes. Does anyone know for sure if this works on VZW or not? I've set mine up that way (900 minute plan), and my used minutes seem to suggest that it will, but there's no minutes being charged to F&F on my online billing page yet.
The only thing holding me back is the apparent lack of mms. Not that many people send me picture messages, but id like for them to at least get a rejection message saying its not possible on ny device so they know it wasnt received

next
Dial *92xxx-xxx-xxxx where xxx is your google voice number and hit call

This successfully routed all incoming calls to my google voice.

*900 call
*920 call

Agreed. The crappy texting service that GV provides is the only thing keeping me from using it full time. MMS isn't the only issue.
I'm gonna drop the Verizon text add-on and give it a try. $70/mo for unlimited LTE is amazing!
Anything I should do to make sure im not being charged for texts? Just composing them within the voice app so I think I'm ok, just slightly paranoid.

I love the texting service from GV. It's my primary means of communicating with many people. There's so many advantages to it, including, in no particular order:
1) It's free. I turned off my SMS plan with AT&T last summer and have been 100% exclusive GV for texts since. I'm saving $20/month on my AT&T phone bill and selected NO text messages on my new Verizon account and I still have unlimited texts.
2) It works across multiple phones, platforms, devices all at the same time. When you send me a text to my GV number, it shows up on all four of my active cellphones, and on all of my computers and laptops that have GV web page open or the GV plugin (for Chrome). I can respond to them without even pulling my phone out of my pocket if I'm at the computer.
3) My texts are automatically backed up in the Google cloud, no need to worry about losing them or backing them up special on my phone as I swap ROMs or wipe data. And I can access them from any phone or web enabled computer.
4) I get all my messages, no one's ever complained that I didn't respond to something they sent that didn't come through. Seems very reliable to me after 15 on it.
As for MMS service, I think Steve Jobs was correct, albeit too far ahead of his time, when he said on the original iPhone that you didn't need MMS, just use email on a smartphone. It was a bit painful way back then (2007...seems so long ago in cell phone terms) at first, but once I trained all my contacts to just send via email I haven't missed any of the pics they want to share, and I'm not paying anything extra to the phone company for the privilege of getting a lower resolution image that's been scaled down to meet MMS limitations.
Thanks for the directions on setting up GV Voicemail, I had to google the instructions (go figure) and found the same info after a quick search. Tested it today and it's working like a champ.
Sweet Jesus I really dig this phone.
I was told by the verizon customer service rep that call waiting is no longer available if you route GV to be the VM service. Anyone else successfully rig it so they can still maintain call waiting but use GV to intercept voicemails?
I have never had a problem with call waiting. Also when I set it up on my Thunderbolt I got the error message as well but when hit skip and went thru the rest of the steps, I checked to see if it was set in my phone settings and it was had a buddy call to test it and it worked just fine not really sure what happened to make i just work without haveing to complete the step where it makes you make the calls during set up but mine is working just fine.
Oh yeah guess I should mention I only you it for the visual voice mail though.

Great info! thanx.
Question, how did you get GV to sync your GV on-line contacts list to your phone?
When I setup my phone it would not recognize my GV login and would tell me I didn't have a google account and to create a new one.
After creating a Gmail account it did recognized my phone and said you can use more than one google account login.
My GV login is working now, but I cant access my GV contacts unless I open a browser and login via the web access.
Any suggestions?
Thanx
figured it out, you have to apply a new account using the web assist option if not using gmail.
Mod please delete this post! ** Disregard, added comments in original post ***
I figured out what was wrong with Google Voice. It doesn't work with the 747 area code because Gizmo numbers used to start with 747. Its the new overlay for the San Fernando Valley. 818 area code is running out of numbers. I snooped around my Verizon account page and I was able to change it to a 818 #.
All is right in the world.
Just switched to Verizon last week (got the Droid Charge) and have been trying to get GV working for my outbound calling. I keep getting an error (bad number when it tries dialing out, and have seen more than one bad number). I googled looking for help with it...found tons of 3 year old posts with vague answers...
Anyone else had this issue? Know how to resolve it? Everything else with GV works fine on my phone, just can't dial out.
Thanks -

Bamf is runnin' my bolt - smoke that vzw!
whenever I go to dial the x71xxx-xxx-xxxx i get a message saying "welcome to verizon wireless your call can not be completed as dialed.
I looked around but couldn't find a thread on this problem.
This is my first Android phone (AT&T version), previously I had a 3GS, and I'm having trouble getting Google Voice sorted. I set up voicemail forwarding as the two thread here suggest, but I can't seem to get calling out working right. If I go into the GV app I can call people who've called me/are starred/left messages etc and it will call with my GV number, but I can't call anyone else with that number. I think I have the phone set to use GV for all calls, but it still uses my cell number if I use the phone dialer. Is there a way to/can I set it up so calls I make come from the GV number?
With the 3GS I just used the GV app for everything and that worked since my calls came from the right number, but as far as I can tell I need to use the phone app to call out with this?
Thanks.
Should be able to change this in the settings:
Settings -> Making Calls
I have mine set up to ask me every time I make a call.
Sounds like yours might be 'Do not use Google Voice to make any calls'
Try groove IP app from market.
Sent from my HTC One X on Leedroid's ROM v5.0.0.
I feel like the least technologically savvy person in the world, but I re-installed the app, restarted, and now it seems to be working.
It had been set to use google voice for all calls, but for whatever reason calls were not coming through that way.
To follow that up. Are texts managed the same way, or do I need to open the GV app to send them?
Use the GV app for texts via GV. Or you can use any other SMS app with the GV-provided phone numbers that it assigns to people that call/text you. As an example, via GV you would normally see a text from Person. If you looked in Messages or Go SMS, it would be Person - +1XXX-XXX-XXX - text. If you use that number to text Person, they will receive it as if it came from your GV #, not your cell #.
Thanks, I'm all sorted out.
