Wifi issues - Not in range? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Two seconds earlier it was 4 bars
I forget it and rescan and sometimes the rescan doesn't even find it
I haven't been able to connect since my router restarted itself the other day
Anybody experienced similar/have a fix?

You need to test with another device. Because it's either the phone or the router. If other wifi devices are doing the same thing, replace the router.

Wifi bug - connects to network, but not internet

I'm experiencing a bug on my Nexus 5, when I first unboxed my device and setup this problem arise for the first time, problem is Nex 5 is connected to my home wifi network but no internet connection/data transmission !! at that time I tinkered a little bit like forget network and reconnected it then it was fixed, after that this problem rarely appear. Then comes the real problem yesterday I rooted my phone then it wont connect to internet same as before connection is accepted and have full strength signal but not connecting to internet, I've tried rebooting, forgetting and connecting, troubleshooted PC etc but nothing seems to fix the problem !! I double checked my network like I connected my tab with wifi and it's working perfectly fine.
Is this a common/known bug with Nexus 5 ? Or it's just me ? (h/w issue)
Any known fix other than I mentioned ?
Does rooting caused this problem appear more frequently ?
Any response will be highly appreciated.
Thank you
Try connecting to a different network, it may be a compatibility issue. Also try rebooting your router/wireless. If that doesn't work then try restoring factory image.
If none of those options fix it then there could be a problem with your Nexus 5's hardware

I'm now flashing factory images, if that doesn't work I'll do a replacement.
I have this issue too, with different WiFi routers.
(Full stock Nexus 5)
Out of intetrest what countries are you connecting in. When I had a Desire HD I had trouble connecting to Turkish routers. Different frequencies? Have you ever connected to your router with an actual connection?
Have yu tried disabling wifi optimzation?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
I did tried with each and every option toggled with but still no way.
Sometimes out of nothing it gets ok then goes bad again.
I'm from India and using Teracom router. Funny thing is my tab here working just fine with my home wifi network, I'll try with another wifi network tomorrow.

Merely rooting the device would have no effect on the Wifi connection. Did you also install a custom rom or kernel?

5GHz networking

Has anyone had trouble with connecting to 5GHz networks with the 2012 GT8010?
I've been unable to. I can see the network but always get authentication issues. This occurred with the original 4.1.2 rooms and now with omnirom after a full reset
My other devices such as a laptop and s4 have no issues...
2.4GHz is just fine even to the same router with the same security settings. Disabling security., dropping g down from ac to a doesn't help nor does switching channel

I have not had any problems personally. I'm running stock not rooted. I have heard other guys having problems though. Sorry I can't help
If you're rooted (or even just have a custom recovery) check here. Turns out that the wrong WiFi config file is being used in US-based units so 5GHz DFS channels won't always work.

thanks. interesting to see if I have issues in those files, but I am actually in the UK in any case.
I tried copying the *mfg* file to *txt* - manufacturing? default perhaps? this had cc=ALL instead of UK, but I figured why not
No difference.....
So followup question - could any UK users post their files from /system/etc/wifi/nvram_net.txt*

Does anyone ever got more than 150 mbps rate ? I mean the connection rate between the tablet and router, not some speed test result. On 5Ghz I get 150, on 2.4GHz no more than 72 mbps. I tried 3 different routers, never got more then 150 mbps, and 60 up/60 down in speed tests.

No, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's intentionally set via the WiFi firmware; the WiFi chip is connected to the Exynos via a 50MHz bus that's 4 bits wide, so your effective thruput wouldn't ever be higher than ~180Mbit/sec anyway.

With is this?!

Could someone please explain why my network is red? Anytime it is like this it won't let me on the network. Doesn't matter what network I'm on and is done this on both my Nexus 5's I've had. I thought that it was something to do with the fact that I rooted the first one but this one is completely stock.
Someone help please!
it turns orange(red) when you are not connected to google. you can try to put it in airplane mode then back.

your whole data signal is probably no good at the moment, thats why googles servers cant be connected. have you tried setting it into airplane mode than back? how about have you tried rebooting?
Reboots and turning data of and on does not fix it.

Your mobile data will go red when you have a bad connection to the internet.
And the same goes for your WiFi.
I have a Telus WiFi router and it quite literally is the cheapest POS I have come across in all my networking experience (1 month XD). Whenever the router stopped responding/ stop transmitting an internet signal my bands would go red. I had to reset my router to get it to work, then I bought a new one.
So the question is, have you reset your router?
Easiest way: Pull the plug, wait 10 seconds and plug back in, wait up to one minute then reconnect to the WiFi network.

I would say that could be the problem but it's not just my router, almost all wifi networks I connect to has the same effect. I'm at a loss. Maybe all the networks I connect to need to be reset but some (like my school network) I can't do that.
So you have had 2 N5 and both have given you the same problem? @automaddux

Yup.
Maybe it is the Wifi network but it's weird that it happens with every network I connect to. What I've noticed after looking carefully that when I go to the Google settings and sync my data it'll eventually connect.
I wish there was a permanent solution.

The other thing to do is ask some friends/ co students if they have the same problem.
Chances of your 2 phones being Duds is far less likely than all the routers needing to be reset. XD
Routers should be restarted now and then.

Wifi connected, but no internet access

I get connected (no internet access) from time to time when I automatically connect to my school's network. It connects automatically and works in some buildings and doesn't in others. Turning wifi off and on fixes the issue. However, it is annoying to keep doing this. I had this issue on EMUI 4.1 and 5.0 (through charles and dload) so I don't think it's the version of android. Is anyone else having the same issue? Could it be the school network's issue? Thanks.

Sorry for the late reply. It's the WiFi in general. Apps that require Internet don't connect either. I did a factory reset and that didn't fix anything.
I have similar problem. When I first got my phone it was on firmware B160 without any problem. I updated to Nougat using firmware finder and the problem started to surface. I rolled back to B160 using their rollback tool, which then got updated to B162. It's much more stable than Nougat but not as good as the original firmware that I was on. Each time I had done factory reset after the update to make sure I am not in some dirty state. (L04 variant)
I have similar problem sometimes on my honor 8, it shows up excellent internet connectivity but failed to lunch apps like facebook or youtube etc(says no internet connection) while other hand samsung A8 run just fine with same wifi network at same time. I have done factory reset but nothing miracle happen still same problem. Frustrating....
If it's been on both 4.1 and 5 its either a hardware issue or the school network is bad

Then the problem is with the router itself. On my experience, some routers will let you connect but will not give you an internet connection.

Definitely the issue is from the router
There was this point where my laptop can connect to the router but can't connect to the internet. After a few days it got fixed automagically.
Have you checked to see if your internet connection is active? If it isn't then you would need to contact your ISP for more assistance with this issue.

Sticky or Slow WiFi issue...?

Hi Guys,
My return to HTC from the Rezound days to the U11 have been less than smooth, it seems. First I have the strange SD card corrupt issue... And now I've got this "sticky" WiFi issue...
Let me try to explain:
So, I'm on Stock phone, straight set up as I got it from Amazon. My Internet bandwidth speed tests around 250mbps on an average. And the speeds remain the same when I experience the issue. Essentially what happens is that randomly my internet starts to "stick" meaning, I'd click on a link, it'll take forever and a half and then the page loads out of nowhere. Similarly, I'd be syncing files to Google Drive and my file upload or download starts crawling ?...
The fix: Toggle WiFi on and off and starts flying again! I haven't noticed the issue while on data (I think)...
I have optimizations off for WiFi. WiFi stays fast on other devices... So I'm not sure what's going on? Anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks!
Haven't experienced it for now on 11.
WiFi was something "messy" on my 10, but all good so far on 11.
Might be some router compatibility issues, from top of my head and without first morning coffee see if it happens on both 2.4 and 5 ghz frequencies and if you can disable ipv6 on your router..

hi. i have the exact same problem as you but only on the 5ghz band. no option to select just 2.4 GHz band is a letdown. i use a virgin media hub 3.0 CH7465, ipv6 in stateless mode. had to disable 5ghz band from router to use the phone on wifi. no issues with mobile data. another issue, unrelated, is the vibration feedback on key press every now and again.

Thanks for reporting and sharing, friend... I'm wondering why more people aren't seeing this or we just got a bad unit? Hopefully HTC finds out and does something about it... ?
Hello !
I am Naphtaline, owning a Sony Xperia XZ Premium and we are experiencing some of your issues there too.
It looks-like the problem could be related to Snapdragon 835 or Android Nougat but we can't be sure yet.
While our problem are not always exactly the same as you, we can say that it could be possible that there are Wifi issues on every snapdragon 835 based device yet on the market.
So, I made a survey to help us understanding this problem. We could then send the results to our brands to help them resolve it.
Please share this link to every people you know owning a flagship device, even if they don't experience the issue. This is very important !
If there are moderators here, if you could make a pinned topic about this survey, this would be marvelous !
https://goo.gl/forms/xePus2lCrjrBjk9b2
Thank you !
this issue is hard to replicate, I tried doing 20 or so speed tests yesterday trying to get it to fail but wouldn't...I know in the past when the issue was present, I switched to 2.4 with no change...I don't have this issue on most routers, only my home router (TP-Link Archer C7) but there again, the issue is so intermittent that it's possible it could happen on other routers but just not noticing.
Pretty sure I've been having this issue since day 1, but I'm trying to tell myself it's just my router, which it's not, as it happens on any wifi network. Also, phone suddenly decided to drop my Verizon signal, and now it won't reconnect. HTC has no fixes for either issue, and Verizon says it's HTC's fault for the signal. Definitely my last HTC phone.
With 5Ghz, if i go to a room little far from where the router is, it would not work but the Speedtest would show amazing speed. Whereas the 2.4Ghz works fine in that room.
FWIW guys the dropped connection effect is happening on my 2.4 SSID as well... Only, momentary fix is toggling off and on.... Have any of you tried a replacement? Maybe we got flawed units?
I am also experiencing this issue and it's driving me nuts! The quick fix is to toggle WiFi on/off, but I shouldn't have to do that.
I have the Xfinity XB3 router, but I do not think it's the router because I also have an S7 Edge where I am not experiencing this issue. I'm going to try using the 2.4 SSID, but from what I've read in this thread so far, it does not sound like that's going to help.
I too am experiencing this issue on the 5Ghz channel of my router. It seems to work initially, but only after a few minutes, it starts to have connection issues. When I switch to the 2.4 Ghz channel, it works just fine, always, no connection issues whatsoever. I just did the survey. Thanks for compiling this, I hope a fix is determined. I have the US Unlocked version, Viper U11 1.3.0 w/ Magisk v12 and module v1.10.1.
The problem is wifi drop-off. Even though the device is showing a good signal the data throughput is weak. If you move closer to the router the wifi will jump back into life. Its due to not having an iso standard for signal strength displays.

Same here..
For me it happens only with my home router networks (Linksys WRT1900ACS).
I found that this drop issue only happens when I'm far from my router when the signal is below -65dBm and only if the 5GHz network is on 80MHz-bandwidth and 2.4GHz is on 40MHz-bandwidth.
Lowering to 40MHz for 5GHz and 20MHz for 2.4GHz solves this problem completely for me.
Two important notes:
1) This behavior only happens with the U11. With other devices like the G6, iPhone 6s and etc. everything works fine at the same time when my wifi networks are on 5GHz 80MHz and 2.4GHz 40MHz.
2) On other 2.4GHz 40MHz-bandwidth networks that I've connected (other than my home's) I don't experience this drops at all with the U11, even when I'm very far away from the router and the signal is very weak.
So this problem seems to be only between the U11 and some routers on some configurations. Very strange
