Ever since I got the TF300T, I felt it was a little sluggish at times. I assumed it was because of all the bloatware and/or the Asus ROM.
I've dealt with it ever since I got it, which is pretty much the day it came out, and I'm tired of that.
I really hoped Jelly Bean or KitKat would help so I unlocked the bootloader, flashed TWRP and flashed a CM11 nightly. (From the 18th I think.)
Its been running for a few hours now, and I feel like its just as slow as before.
I'm aware I could buy a newer device (like a Nexus 7 or 10) but that's not an option right now.
I'm also aware that I could try another ROM like OMNI or Cromi but
(a) I choose CM because I've used their ROMs in the past and I trust them, and
(b) I'm not really in excited about trying 2, 3 or 5 different ROMs
Is this the sort of performance I should expect from this device?
Is this as good as it gets?

You should see a significant performance improvement from stock to CM11. For example starting or switching applications is much faster.
Can you describe in more detail, what you are doing, and where you consider it to be slow?

Did you wipe /data, /system, /cache, & dalvik cache before you flashed CM11?
what he said
like ebildude said make sure to do proper wipes before installing rom. i've personally only used cromix and it works great, even though it's stock based - theres lots of tweaks. also look into getting a fast microsd and take a look at rom2sd ,data2sd and cache2sd tweaks in the cromi thread-may boost performance a little. hope you get it working to your satisfaction, this is really a good little machine when it works right, can even dual boot linux, look at the xubuntu thread.

Try installing a kernel, like GEASS or GRIM. Then use overclock and a new scheduler.
Thanks for the replies!

I flashed it yesterday afternoon around 3pm and didn't do much with it other than
add my Google account
create a new user account and link that to Google
I haven't loaded it down with apps, yet.
In general, moving about the device seems choppy (not smooth) and its not responsive whether I'm
Opening and closing the app drawer
Scrolling the app drawer or home screen
Accessing menus in settings.
When turning on the screen it takes 5-7 seconds before the screen actually turns on.
Launching applications or games aren't any faster and there's some stuttering when watching media. (Like HBOGO)

I did a factory reset, installed ROM then wiped cache. I'll look at the TWRP menu when I get home.

I really like this device for a variety of reasons, and I'd love to dual boot Linux! (I'm a huge FreeBSD and Gentoo fan!) Despite how sluggish its been, I've gotten a lot of work done on this device. Well via things like Citrix and LogMeIn. When traveling we use it to watch TV and do things that would otherwise be too difficult to do on a phone.
I have a 32GB Class 10 microsd in the tablet and 16GB Class 10 SD card in the battery/keyboard portion.
Something just occurred to me: Could it be that the system is scanning the SD cards? One is mostly empty (twrp backup, files for flashing) but the other is packed with data. (Maps for OsmAnd, TitaniumBackup backups, music, photos and other stuff etc.)

The TWRP Factory reset wipes data, cache and dalvik not including internal storage.
The advanced wipe let's you choose the option to wipe everything, but I only did cache and dalvik.
Also after flashing a ROM TWRP has a convenient 'Wipe Cache/Dalvik' button on the screen, which I did.
So to be sure, I just did a factory reset again , followed by an advanced wipe wiping everything except my memory cards (Data, dalvik, system, cache). I reflashed CM11, wiped cache and dalvik then flashed the gapps.
That sufficient?

Well by my testing, GEASS seemed more stable, but Grim had more raw power. It will depend on what apps you have installed and use.

Opening recent apps can sometimes take 2-3 seconds, especially if there are a lot of recent apps and it has not been used in a while. But usually it is less than 1 sec. Everything else you list should be very snappy, less than 1 sec, usually far less.
When turning on the screen it takes 5-7 seconds before the screen actually turns on.

That is much too long! I get the lock screen in less than a second.
Did you see any improvements after the full wipe including data?

That is indeed possible; maybe it is waiting for the device to settle, especially during the long screen-on time.
Any improvement, if you remove the sdcards?

Ok its been about a few hours since I wiped + reflashed and I have a bittersweet update.
The Good:
I'm noticing an immediate improvement this time around!
+ The CPU is now at a more reasonable 0.1x-0.2x versus a constant 3.xx - 5.xx!
+ When waking up from sleep (pressing the power button) the screen is on almost immediately versus 5-7 seconds.
+ Opening the app drawer, moving between screens is not only faster (more responsive) but its not as choppy. (maybe completely lagless)
+ In general its noticeably faster.
+ I installed Netflix, HBO GO etc and playback is smooth.
The Bad:
- There's still the occasional slowness in general, although not as frequent, but its especially slow when downloading & installing apps. (like it hangs)
- It was running nicely *until* I added a second user. Immediately after creating the account, there was a significant decrase in performance. I noticed this in the stock Asus ROM even after wiping and not installing anything. Not sure if this is an Android thing or unique to this device. (Also, it just rebooted right in the middle of creating the account; fluke I suppose as it didn't happen a second time.)
- CPU is now hanging around 0.3x - 0.5x after adding the new user. I assume its caused by whatever background processes associated with the new account but the 'presence' of the new account is being felt.
While I'm not excited about the cons, its considerably better than what it used to be.
I'll test without the microSD & SD card tomorrow and let the system 'rest' and 'settle' for tonight.
Your input has been invaluable and I'll keep pressing on!

Or do we just download the zip and flash in recovery?

Try the ROW I/O scheduler, that should perform much better with background writing.

Most ROMs lag when updating from the store etc. Just turn off auto updating and do them manually and don't use the tab for 5 mins whilst it is updating.
As for multi user - it's bawked - never seen it work well on any device. I'd forget it for now as the performance hit is not worth it.

Lately my Nexus S has been behaving oddly. It's slow to respond for simple things like opening up gosms takes 10-15 seconds at times, pulling down the notification bar takes longer than normal and when it gets slow it tends to freeze up while loading whatever I have asked it to do.
I figured it was just jelly bean causing it to work harder than before so I went back to gingerbread (CM 7.2) which I had on it before and it used to be pretty snappy, but alas the issue remains. Very sluggish and freezing up.
On top of this my battery now does not last more than 4 hours when it used to go a good 12-13 hours and the phone gets very hot at times, I can feel it in my pocket when it heats up.
All of this has been happening the last 4 days.
So far I've tried doing a factory reset, a full wipe and re-flash, fixed permissions. Nothing has worked so far.
I am on the CM 7.2 kernel, Right now the only apps I've installed are the google apps, thinking it may have been a rogue app, but the problem is still there.
Any ideas what the issue may be, or is my dearly beloved Nexus just taking it's final breaths? lol
Install OS Monitor and see which app or process is eating up the cpu. Most likely the media scanner is running with an almost full sdcard. Also try to reformat your sdcard, back up first though.

My SD Card has only 2GB used at the moment.
I installed watchdog and this morning I see 3 alerts that the Gmail app was pushing the cpu at 63%. That's the only app that shows heavy cpu use.

That's weird. Try uninstalling Gmail and see if that fixes your issue. Then you can reinstall it from the PlayStore.

So gmail was the battery killer in this case. I removed it then reinstalled from market and it's normal again.
My nexus is still vsery sluggish when opening and using apps. Even typing this now it freezes up and skips letters.
Also the phone is quite hot to the touch at the moment after doing a reboot about 5 minutes ago.
Any ideas?
Hi,
What JB ROM were u using? What kernel?
Because JB is smooth as heck for me and I've tried a few different ROMs.
It could be ur apps notifications or the animation on the app drawer.... or other transition animation. Just turn them all off.
Try clearing the cache and data on some the app under "manage app" section.
Crack up the CPU if u got a lot of data being used in the background such as email, gmail, goggle now, etc.
Heck find some time to reflash the ROM u like, but run it without adding anything to see if it starts out sluggish. If so then its the ROM and or kernel.
If it starts out smooth then add ur apps and background data one by one to see what is hogging the CPU.
I'm running codename android with air kernel(stable) and I have minimal or no lag at all.
Slim bean with air kernel also runs smooth.
Good luck

---------- Post added at 11:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:21 PM ----------
I've also read that if u were a flash a holic u may have some unwanted data on ur SD card that being read by the android system.
So copy ur SD card to ur computer and format the SD card.... then only add the ROM zip files onto the SD card for a very fresh I stall.
Good luck

I tried androxide and the 99% google experience JB roms. I then tried CM 9.
All of these were sluggish, freezing up constantly and running very hot.
Since my last post I have gone back to CM 7.0.3 which is the rom I was running prior to trying JB.
This rom runs smooth, very responsive and the battery life is great.
Go figure I guess.
Does anyone get this; open something with a long list (e.g. gallery), then scroll quickly by flicking the list up/down and do it so the list keeps scrolling. I get lag when doing this, and its not smooth (believe the effect i'm after is called "buttery..?"). What ends up happening for me is that the scroll stutters and it ends up opening a file in the list that i'm scrolling.
I get this with a fair few ROMs and have always lived with it until today when I decided enough is enough and I need to man up and ask for help, plus I really want to use the Viper S rom effectively as the comments about this ROM suggest that this should not be happening.
I've wiped (factory reset in recovery then wipe all excpet sd, then cleared cache and dalvic PLUS i also select the wipe function in the viper aroma before install) and installed the ROM 3 times. Strange thing is, i don't get the problem after the first few restarts (not FC but me restarting it) but then for no reason at all, this lag issue appears (i have yet to restore titaniaum apps/download any apps at this point).
Sometimes it happen.
If you can't live with it, you can try the following:
a. Change the governor. On demand or lag free will offer you better performance. (affecting negatively your battery life)
b. Overclock a bit.
c. Change your kernel. Sebastian's seems to be working nice.
d. Use system tuner to check the apps that auto start and use your resources.
I hope it helps.
Regards

I just wanted to be sure that I am going to do this right.
Do I just go Settings > About phone > CyanogenMod updates > then download 10.1 and it will do all the work for me? Or do I have to make a nandroid backup (going to do that anyways), wipe cache and dalvik, flash boot.img then flash the rom?
Also, how stable is 10.1? Any known bugs?

The automatic updater will not work. At least if you're S-On. So flashing through recovery is the way to do it (wipes and boot.img flashing as usual also ofc). I believe flashing CM10.1 over CM10 might work without factory reset, but prepare for stuff not working and flashing it again with proper wiping.
Bugwise I'd say CM10.1 is absolutely ready as a daily driver. Wifi tether doesn't work when screen is off (same issue is with CM10). Performance is a bit lower than with CM10. You'll see some screen tearing when scrolling and switching home screens and in some games with intense graphics.
Give it a go! It's not too hard to go back to CM10 if it doesn't please you.

This will be a tl;dr story so only read it if you can be bothered...
I did the automatic update, then as soon as it downloaded I had to run for the bus (one a bloomin' hour). I was then stuck on the htc splash screen for about ten minutes, did a soft reset, went into recovery, went back to CM10, restored the backup, not a problem. Then got home, pushed 10.1 onto the phone, flashed the new boot.img, then flashed CM10.1 and restored backup again. Worked fine. Then I had to try three different Gapps because two of them didn't actually work, and it was agonising that the website that I got them from only had an upload speed of around 0.4Mbs. But flashed that now, and everything works fine (although I had to delete and re-download NatWest and Play Music).

Spotted a couple of bugs immediately. Syncing with facebook simply does not work (I only wanted contact pictures for caller IDs). Obviously the clock bug, but I know how that is fixed. Haven't had any screen tearing yet, and since Orange only give me 750MB there is nooooooooo way that I am going to use tethering, so that won't bug me. CM10.1 has fixed the music player bug, where the first song I play would take around 30 seconds to play, if I chose another song then it would restart the previous song, play that for five seconds, then play the selected song, and if I paused a song it would then start playing again for a couple of seconds after five seconds of being paused. That was irritating. Noticed it seems to be a fair bit more RAM heavy than CM10, but I miss the settings button on the top of the notification bar, that tiles thing just seems to take to long for my liking...

Already knew about the sections thing, but because I'm right-handed every time I wanted to look at a notification I got settings, and setting it so that the settings open on the left side just seems a bit weird. I didn't know about the two fingers thing, and I like that, cheers.
My phone learned a new trick last week: launch an app, and the screen turns dead black after the app's splash loading screen.
It doesn't happen with every app or every time certain apps are launched, but if it is going to happen, it is always just after an app loading screen and before the app itself would be displayed. It never happens on a system or preference screen, or in an app without a splash animation.
Button back-lighting, volume control, and haptic seem to remain active and respond as normal, but the app seems to be locked into the foreground with a black screen, and can't seem to do anything to stop it but reboot the phone via power button hold.
I'm running CM 12.1 nightlies on a Verizon S3. I've been updating the CM nightlies, well, nightly since last week in hopes a fix would be included in one of them, but I'm not sure this is a ROM issue. I've also wiped Dalvik/Cache several times, with and without a ROM update. I saw black screens on some phones were caused by theme window animations, so I've disabled these in CM, but hasn't made a difference.
Just a guess on my part, but if the nightlies do not fix this you may end up needing to do a clean flash. Hopefully you do not have to go as far as formatting /system.

Thanks, but wouldn't a "clean flash" require wiping `system`?
I'm wondering whether this is possibly a hardware problem too: this phone's been pretty beaten up, not sure how to determine that though.

I'd wipe everything, including system and your internal SD card, then you'll know for sure if it's hardware related or not.

Hi everyone,
My phone gates very laggy on daily basis. Something I never had on my Nexus 4. Not sure if this is ROM or Kernel related or something else completely. My RAM is not maxed out when this happens, and I really don't know how to troubleshoot/resolve this.
So far I tried I various Kernels, currently on bluspark. I always only used Chroma ROMs, so I'm not sure if I would get this behavior with other roms. I tried various schedulers and Read ahead buffer sizes.
Any advice/help would be appreciated.
Maybe flash back to stock MM for a couple of days to see what happens?

Yeah, was trying to avoid that since getting everything back takes some time even with google restore and titanium. I went ahead and flashed XtraFactory rom (close enough to stock I guess) and really wanted display manager to work so I flashed Blu_sprk Kernel. Phone already got laggy and eventually crashed... I'll set Governor to Ondemand and scheduler to CFQ (I believe that's stock settings) and see what happens....
If you have already constantly reflashed and nothing works fine try to go nuclear:
Reinstall firmware via adb or a toolkit, that fixed a lot of issues for me.
If you dont want to
I recommend you to free out RAM/Memory and Optimize the Database
try to use SD Maid, Go to settings > Quickaccess and enable duplicates
Settings > App Corpses and then check all
now run the quick access.. once everything is cleaned down reboot the device and see if it helped.
If nothing significant happened, factory reset but again if nothing happens i suggest you go nuclear and wipe everything out by reflashing firmware.
It's never laggy even after 2 years of everyday use.
