Now that we can control our phone by simply saying "OK Google", there needs to be a way to wake/unlock our devices remotely. I've fiddled with tasker and secure settings but I can't get it to disable the keyguard from the watch so that it'll accept the keyword. I know this isn't an issue if you have a Moto X but what about the rest of us?
There must be a workaround.... Surely?
Anyone got any ideas?
Sent via telepathy
Okay just had a quick think, the sony doesn't have a mic so you would need your phone anyhow? It should be possible to remove key guard, turn on display and start Google now though. Is that what you are thinking?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
That is the intent, yes. Problem I'm having is the keyguard with pattern lock though. I'm using the same settings that I use to turn it off when connected to my home WiFi but it's just not disabling even when I run the task through the SW2 extension itself.
Sent from Nexus 5 or 7.
I think you need to swap to a pin, that's what I use for my auto key guard.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Well I've had to set it up with a tasker profile that disables the keyguard when the watch is connected (an auto lock if disconnected extension adds extra security). I can wake the phone with the phone finder extension and then just hit the button on my headset to get voice search to open.
Hell of a workaround but it gets the job done and I don't have to get my phone out.
Sent via telepathy
Just playing around and I can clear the key guard and turn on the display with secure settings. From there I can have Google search or voice search load.

I have a couple of options for this. The first option is to use secure settings and tasked so that when the watch is connected via Bluetooth to the phone the screen lock is disabled. As soon as you leave the phone behind and loose connection it relocks.
The second method allows voice control of the phone even with screen lock enabled. That is full pin password etc.
It uses remote widget, Utter! And optionally Tasker.
If you add Utter widget to remote widget, voice recognition can be triggered with lock on. Normally you need screen access but this gets around it.
You can then create custom commands for utter to run tasker tasks
Sent from my XT1032 using Tapatalk
---------- Post added at 09:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:38 PM ----------
I forgot to say. When Utter prompts and asks for input when you press the remote widget icon on the watch, simply say 'open Google search' then 'OK Google' and away you go
Sent from my XT1032 using Tapatalk
---------- Post added at 09:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:45 PM ----------
I was wrong. I can't run Google search behind the lock.
As above I can open it, but not get it to speak back but can run the search.
I can even call people and talk on the phone using this method with the key lock still in place

Even the cheapest of bluetooth headsets can do this though. I never thought about using Utter so I've reinstalled that but it's still limited.
Using tasker to disable keyguard is all very well but it will always be unlocked the first time you power it on after disconnecting so you should couple it with one of the auto lock apps on the play store just to be safe.
Also, I managed to turn screen on by just engaging the Sony SW2 phone finder app. After that turns the screen on, as long as you're within vocal reach (or have headset on), "OK Google" works fine.
Messy but it does the job without additional installations.
Hopefully, the rumoured Google smartwatch will cover all of this when it arrives.

I just wrote an auto locker in tasker which I find more reliable, I swap watches though so never really gave the sony ones a good go.
Yeah the google one will be interesting.

I have a workaround for it. I am using this with my first gen Sony SW. I installed google voice for smartwatch https://play.google.com/store/apps/...me.smartconnect.extension.google.now.launcher and the LG Optimus Lockscreen https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lockscreen.optimus
Disable your stock lockscreen
When I press the voice search button on my watch the phone unlocks and google voice search starts!
The only downside of this is that this lockscreen is a little battery-hungry but it's not too bad....
I've done this with my nexus 4

Half works on my I9300 but the brightness doesn't coincide with the slider.
For example if I tap it to "full" it's off again and no matter where I tap along the line it goes brighter or dimmer as it pleases
Otherwise, brilliant app! Been liking for exactly this for months!!
Looking forward to updated versions

I guess I'll have to add a settings option to set the maximum brightness, for the S4 it was 15, anything more than that and it the brightness stays the same.
Permissions question
Thanks for the app.
Can you please explain the need for some of the permissions?
Using Xprivacy, I can see that it requires Location, Network, Phone, Storage and other permissions I would normally not associate with an app like this.
Thank you.

Be careful!
When using this app AND in addition turning the light on with another app, the maximus light will be increased! It seems to me that the values of light will be summed up! So when using only 20 percent of full light, it will be increased up to 120 percent when turning the light on with another app. That is very dangerous!
Another problem for me: The flashlight seems not to be off @0 percent. In an absolute dark room I can see a little glow. Seems to me that the flashlight is not fully turned off at 0 percent.
I hope, someone can confirm my experience and that this little bugs can be solved
This developer needs a double thanks.

Any good suggestions on alternatives that are tried and tested on our nexus 5?

Open BBM -> More -> Settings -> make sure "BBM Connected Icon" is turned on.
I've had the same, in the previous version, before this button was even introduced. Ever since BBM was updated, the icon has always been there and has never disappeared, at all.

Other msg apps cope fine in the 0byte state, shrugs.. I have missed loads of messages over the last week's.
I've tried many things to try and stop that behaviour..
turning it into system app
setting all permissions
changing owner and group to root
odexing it
nothing works

Ah, I see. My bad then.
As of to the replacement - Kik Messenger works well. Works similarly to BBM, by having your own name used to add people (i.e. MrCatalyst) and vice versa. Much more secure than WhatsApp, which uses phone number and lacks privacy, and very similar to BBM at that.
My proposal is Swiss app Threema. Their servers are in Switzerland also. Works OK. If you can get your friends to use paid app.

By any chance do you have google now set that you can say "OK Google" from any screen to initiate voice commands without having to touch your phone? There is a bug that in order for it to work it keeps your mic active all the time so your alarm clock thinks you are talking on the phone and automatically snoozes. Quick research on the play store shows several people with S6/Edge phones complaining about hotword detection option missing.

I do. My voice features disappeared as well
Have the same issue. 'Anywhere' hot word detection disappeared yesterday. I also think it must have been the update I ran. Uninstalling the Google now update had no effect though. There is a config flag that lists the 'blacklist' phone models. There used to be an app to force the Google app into debug/dogfood mode so that you could change it - but I haven't seen any way to do that w/ the newest versions. My guess is that Samsung chose to disable listen everywhere to try to force people into using s-voice.

You could install tap, tap and set the double tap on back to turn the screen off. Can't think of another way that would avoid the button on the side.

This is a standard icon has nothing to do with pixel, lg or samsung
The only one launcher that I've found for this feature was Lawnchair v2 (from Playstore), also, does not mess up with Android 11 gestures.
I use the Double Tap but not sure if it will run on Q or higher.
On Playstore, no ads, no internet connection, very small, uses almost no battery and runs flawlessly.
2X tap on/off; I rarely use the power button.

No ads, and doesn't connect to internet.
It say it had ads but my download didn't.
Sets option as device administrator but you don't need to activate that for it to work.
Double Tap - Apps on Google Play
Easy to turn on/off screen without power. Not affected to unlock by fingerprint

I optimized things a little more and went for Single Tap (haha). I'm using "Turn Off Screen" from the Play Store. Basically a nice little "Lock" icon on the home screen. Click... screen is off.
Turn Off Screen (Screen Lock) - Apps on Google Play
One tap to turn screen off and lock. Works with Fingerprint, Touch ID, Face ID.

I blew that one off because it connects with the internet. Has Administrator permissions, right?
Not a good idea if so.
Double Tap never connects and has no ads.
Currently "Turn Off Screen (Lock Screen)" is running great and has "No Permissions Granted".
