facebook buys whatsapp - alternative? jitsi? - General Topics

hey there,
since zuckerberg now owns whatsapp, i am thinking of an alternative. i never thought wa was perfect, because it didnt have video- voice-chat and it was limited to the phone. but it was so easy to setup and use so everyone uses it.
hangout is very much cross device and has live-chat. but it is a bit complicated for people (needs g+) and it is google (which at least most of my friends dont trust).
then there are those like threema, with lots of privacy but still limited like wa.
and then i always think, i'd like to use open source.
now i found jitsi and thought, when they manage to do mobile-apps this looks like a decent hangout-alternative. do you have experience with that? how does it work? do you need a jabber-account somewhere else? or do you just dl jitsi and register?
What might be a better alternative?
One that could compete with hangouts in terms of features and one i could convice my non-techy friends to use...
Many thx for your thoughts...

Wow that's bad news.
You don't get desktop version and voice chat, but I still love Whatsapp. Or should I say loved it?
I think it is good that whatsapp used to stay the way it was — an alternative to your text (sms) messages.
(There was an app for iphones which I haven't heard about for quite a while?)
If you want a voice chat, there are lots of vibers skypes and so on. even hangouts has now.
I stopped using android phones and not sure if you need to join g+ to use hangouts, I would never go to G+ as it is useless piece of software - I like keep stuff simple and without something I do not need (in fact, I even hate G+ and how they force it.)
It is not like I do not trust Ad Giant, it is how they behave: they force stuff, they shutdown stuff, like it happened with Reader, they want to tell you how you should use their internets.
I will have to pray FB won't turn Whatsapp into some crap.
There might be an alternative - Viber. It is quite popular.
Though there is an issue with notifications on WP8 which probably will never be resolved, so I do not really use that app, but it's okaayy.

I hear Telegram is good. It's developed by a gang of mathematicians (PhD people) that have developed their own encryption or something, and it's pretty bullet proof. They offered $200,000 to the one who managed to crack their encryption. Nobody managed to do it, but one guy got $100,000 after he found a hole or something.
Either way, it's pretty pretty secure.

@isotske: you see? i actually think that hangouts are great. the only thing is, that sent fotos are stored in a private g+-album and you cant send video like in wa. but it works seemlessly on all platforms, mobile and desktop and has all features (voice, video, filetransfer, desktopsharing etc). but noone trusts google and wants to use too many of their services...
telegram i heard of, and threema, textsecure, chatsecure etc they all are supposed to be cool. but still not os and all just texting-apps (i know, wa is also just a texting app, but since we switch now, we can switch to a fully featured service)
i wonder why skype doesnt support push notifications on mobiles.
the most appealing concept to me would be xmpp, jabber, jingle. i like the idea that you are independent of a single provider. but on the other hand i cant find resources on which provider or client is good and sustainable. and the other thing is convincing my friends to register at one place get the client from an other and the mobile app will look kompletly different and far from slick like fb, hangouts or wa.
thx,
kws

Since Whatsapp is now a member of Team Facebook, we should surely be looking for an alternative, In my opinion, BBM or WeChat or Line messaging apps could act as good alternative for Whatsapp. I hope my reply helps.

Facebook and WhatsApp said nothing is going to change and they will be autonomous, so what's the big deal that they are owned now by Facebook?

I Guess Telegram( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.messenger ) is the next big thing, it has 800.000 new users since facebook bought whatsapp

Why would you stop using it just because Facebook bought it? Does it really matter that much?

i used wa, because they didn't store user-data. at least their tos said so.
now with fb that might change soon, since they're not only storing but selling...
telegram looks good, but they store the msgs on their servers. but still, encrypted if you want. if they had video-/voice-calls i would start promoting it to my friends right away

yeah, mod, it is a matter of principle for me.
i will use for a while just coz 2 of my important contacts on wa, but i would like to stop in future.
hey my whatsapp is not working and i was reported it is not working for others too.. no news on it yet.

I don't understand why people are going from WhatsApp to another app because Facebook bought it over. Never used WhatsApp myself, prefer Viber.

as i said, wa did not store or sell userdata. fb, like many other does. so i just assume that wa-data will be stored soon on fb-servers. and i don't like that. so i'd like to discuss the pros and cons of alternatives (if you don't mind )

Kontalk looks like a promissing project, with end to end encryption and opensource both client and server software. Community managed.
Only android client is available now but they plan to build an IOs version too.
I believe the project deserves support of developers and/or money.

does anyone have experience with jitsi or imo.im? is an imo.im-account a xmpp-account?
in all the commentsections and forum people always pronounce that they are not using propriatary **** from google, fb, apple, ms and they use the almighty open source like xmpp, jabber, jingle. but noone can tell me which service-hoster and clients are the best...

At the moment I vote for Hangouts, Viber or Kik , got tests on ChatOn and KakaoTalk running as well though.

Thats exactly what I thought, If it would have real voice-chat or video chat it would be a great and easy to use alternative for all those WA-fans.
The other messengers are all too 'asian' for me, too many little manga pix and so. Only Viber could make it.

Mark Zuckerberg doesn't own WhatsApp nor does he own Facebook. He's the CEO and founder of Facebook and a major stock owner, but there's thousands of people who collectively own Facebook. Yes I'm a smart ass.
But seriously, the ex chairman of WhatsApp said that nothing is going to change about WhatsApp when the ownership goes to Facebook. What's the big deal? It will not affect us customers. Maybe in a good way only.

No they won't store your data. "Nothings going to change". IF they were to ever store your data you would have to accept it formally(terms of service), so they're not just gonna secretly start saving all your messages.
Facebook didn't buy Whatsapp because they want the control of the service and get direct revenues of of it. They just effectively bought a major(really big treat for Facebook) rival out of the market. Whatsapp has 450 million users. That is a lot considering Facebook "only" has one billion users. That's a lot of people to basically buy off.

Google + Discussion (NO INVITE REQUESTS!)

I am starting this thread in the hope we can discuss the Google Plus service. There are some other threads out there, but are slammed full of invite requests, and no discussion is actually occurring, so please, no invite requests of any kind.
I personally love this service so far, I think it will be a [email protected] killer in very short order. I especially like the way Circles is set up.
Since it's a closed beta atm, there's no one that I know personally with an account. This means all the great things I used Facespace for I can't play around with yet. I guess I can set up my profile and keep looking around for the next three weeks.
People that got accounts are already getting bored of it because their friends can't join. It's like being the only person with a cell phone - who are you going to call? You log in and click around for ten minutes, then you log back out. No point in posting anything - nobody can see it. Nothing to read, yet, either.
If Google doesn't open it up soon, it's going to die like Wave did. The early adopters will use it for a few days and move back to Facebook where their friends are. People will gradually get invited in, only to find the ghost town left after the early adopters abandoned it. Time will pass and people will forget that they were waiting to be invited.
This Google-coined idea of the "invite-only" service worked for gmail because you didn't need a community to use email - you could still message hotmail and msn email users. It doesn't work for anything that requires community (like social networking definitely does).

+1 Couldn't agree more. If Google don't get a move on this will die faster than than a Sinclair C5
I like Google+ ... I like the concept of Friend circle .. It has good potential
It's a beta, not open to public. It is this way, for testing purposes, and for bug reporting. It has numerous bugs, and basically, annoying things that it does.
I'm sure when it's polished, it'll be released to the masses. I'm pretty sure those with it are thankful for having a new toy to play with, even if it is limited.
With the above said;
It's fantastic in concept. The ability to have group chats, group voice/video with chosen circles, etc, is a Facebook killer.
A bunch of my friends and I are on g+, and it's all we've been toying around with. Hangout and Huddle are probably the best features.
Since not many people use the service, we've been treating g+ like twitter where we follow complete strangers with interesting posts just to occupy the stream..

+2. I've been in for about a week but can't get anyone else in. so I set up my profile. play around with it but without guides or others to interact with I'm already beyond bored with it.
Also since I don't have any friends on it, I disabled the account sync feature in the system setting but whenever I come back in an hour or so, it auto enabled itself? SOB! I deleted the app.
I really want to use group chat on here, but my friends aren't on this service...I hope it grows.

how do I even find other peoples posts? The only thing I can find it my failed invite attempts on my stream.
Youll see others ppls posts that are directed to the circle they have you in. If you see nothing, you either have no friends, or they have not shared anything with you.
For instance, I have many circles (groups of ppl), when I post an article/status, I can choose which group(s) to post it to, or indeed, post it publicly. A certain person can be a member of multiple groups, as well.
Perhaps take a look at "sparks" for people/sites to follow.
As said prior though, this IS a closed beta. It has not been released at this stage as a replacement for your favourite social sites. If indeed youve been lucky enough to get an invite, then treat it for what it is. A testbed.

So far I am liking g+. I think it has a lot of potential, but like others have said it wont show its full capabilities until everyone can join at will. I don't even want to try adding any non-techie friends because I'm worried that the crappy invite system would annoy them and scare them off. The circles are an awesome idea, but my favorite part so far is the ability to have it upload my pics and videos automatically from my phone. Not only does it make it extremely easy to post them anytime you want, it also works like a cloud service to back them up and you can access them from your computer too.

This is still a beta test so its a little slow, once Google feels that most of the kinks are hammered out they will make it public.
That's when the flood will open.
I think Google will start packaging G+ as a stock Google-app that will be on all newer android devices. since there are a reported 500,000 android activations daily which means that's 15 million new people in a month. Compared to facebooks 750 million current users its not much, but at that 500k rate could dominate facebook in 4 years.
I have this feeling that G+ may be ready to go public in August
Engadget Article
It turns out that Google will boot all non public profiles after July 31
Facebook just announced group chat, and video chat. http://on.fb.me/pKBugz
Competition is indeed a good thing. No matter who wins the battle of supremacy, we'll all come out winners
Edit: This is a pretty decent review of Google+;

I have been using G+ for only 3 days. I think the circle setup is very nice, and the huddle service is a huge jump from facebook. However, I do think that we have to wait until there is a huge increase in the number of user of google+ to see how it compares with facebook. I have only 20 people in my circles. My friends are all reluctant to move over.
I have a feeling that this might become a part of stock android ui as it integrates into your contacts pretty deeply...
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
Anyone having issues with notifications when Google+ unloads itself from the memory? Notifications won't pop up until you open Google+ again. Not an issue with regular notifications since I get an email notification on those. But with Huddle, it kind of defeats the purpose.

Cry for Google Proprietary Messaging App

I am transition from BB back to android for various reasons, but one thing I will miss is BBM. I think that apple creating their own propreitary messaging platform shows there is definite potential in such a product.
I did some searches and looks like google had something called huddle, then messenger for google+. I am not on google+ so I dont know if thats still around.
Either way I think its time for google to create such an app. I know they have gchat and google voice. But the main draw of BBM (and imessage) I think its focus on messaging: the read and delivered indicators, sending files, seamless integration into the OS. I use both quite often but neither really measure up to BBM's capabilities. With the new OS's JB and ICS (haha new) this might be a sweet add to them.
Honestly even just adding read/delivery indicators to gchat might seem like a great marginal improvement..
Thoughts, or I am just so out of touch that gchat has been improved (in my years absense) to the point thats its way superior to BBM (more than just superior in amount of friends who use it lol).
Thx.
I too went from android to bb then i died and went back to android.
One major drawback of the bb is the apps. App selection is horrible and now that BB is in the hole because of their money issues and the fact that their os is not keeping up with Apple or Google they are probably going to keep declining.
Google+ is great. One major problem is that not everyone uses them. Google+ has Hangout which allows you to video chat with 10 people and txt chat with groups, like Family, My Friends, Coworkers, etc. You dont need a pin, just have them as a friend.
Now, my final Opinion,
BBM is great, you can chat(like AIM back in those days) and stalk with r or unread.
But, keeping a BB as an overall phone is a big negative.
theres a saying like "with great something comes great sacrifices."
It depend on what you choose, yes they all have a chat style thing, but you need to look at the other features that you also need that others dont have.
Thanks for the feedback. I would agree. I do love my bb; its a fantastic phone (ie communications device) unfortunately seems I think I need my phone to be more than a phone (per the culture nowadays). So I look to android. But the bb is superior in email, text, and calling but you are right- no apps really. Plus a bigger screen is oh so tempting.
And as far as the 'r' / 'd' indicators (ie stalking), it would nice to have a messaging app that does at least the delivered indicator. Too many times I wonder if my text has gone through as some people dont get mine sometimes (could be their phone or mine)
I guess my intention with this thread was to see if I am missing anything or raise awareness that goog should make a messaging platform..
GTalk still needs improving.
But only by a few tweaks. It still doesn't allow you to send pictures!
I have to manually upload them to Photobucket, copy the link, go back to GTalk and paste it :what::screwy::sly:
I think theres already a Whatsapp Messenger for Android.
I would love to see a combined Messaging/Google Talk app that allows me to send messages to either phone numbers or email addresses in the same threads. Kind of like Big Fruit's iMessage feature. I want to be able to keep the same conversations going whether I'm on my phone or tablet. I /could/ use Google Voice, but I like keeping my GV number separate from my real number.

Telegram is a messaging app with a focus on speed and security. It’s super-fast, simple, secure and free.
Telegram seamlessly syncs across all of your devices and can be used on desktops, tablets and phones alike. You can send an unlimited amount of messages, photos, videos and files of any type (.doc, .zip, .pdf, etc.). Telegram groups have up to 200 people and you can send broadcasts to up to 100 contacts at a time. Be sure to check our website for a list of Telegram apps for all platforms.
We built Telegram to make messaging speedy and safe again, without the usual caveats.
Why Switch to Telegram?
FAST: Telegram is the fastest messaging app on the market because it uses a distributed infrastructure with data centers positioned around the globe to connect users to the closest possible server.
SECURE: We made it our mission to provide the best security among mass messengers. Telegram heavily encrypts all your data with time-tested algorithms.
CLOUD STORAGE: Telegram seamlessly syncs across all your devices, so you can always securely access your data. Your message history is stored for free in the Telegram cloud. Never lose your data again!
GROUP CHAT & SHARING: With Telegram, you can form large group chats of up to 200 members, send broadcasts to up to 100 contacts at a time, quickly share large videos, documents (.doc, .ppt, .zip, etc.), and send an unlimited amount of photos to your friends.
RELIABLE: Built to deliver your messages in the minimum bytes possible, Telegram is the most reliable messaging system ever made. It works even on the weakest mobile connections.
100% FREE & NO ADS: Telegram is free and will always be free. We are not going to sell ads or introduce subscription fees.
PRIVACY: We take your privacy seriously and will never give third parties access to your data.
For those interested in maximum privacy, Telegram offers Secret Chats. Secret Chat messages can be programmed to self-destruct automatically from both participating devices. This way you can send all types of disappearing content — messages, photos, videos and even files. Secret Chats use end-to-end encryption to ensure that a message can only be read by its intended recipient.

This application is one of the best encrypted chat applications out right now. Secret messaging and auto self destruct are amazing features.
If you don't like Facebook knowing everything about you through Whatsapp this is the thing to switch to. It feels super slick and fast. It has better options then any other messaging app has at the moment and it's growing bigger and bigger. Hope the community can give the attention this app deserves and makes it the new messaging app on Android/iOS/WP and PC.
THIS APP IS NOT MINE. I just want to give it attention since more people should use this amazing application.
Really good explanation from: Ba7rani123
Ba7rani123 said:
Many people are ranting that its the same as whatsapp so whats the use ? or Its not really secure because it uses your phone number
To know if an app is secure or not we have to look at 4 things:
Where is the company based ?
Who made it ?
Are the protocols secure ?
Privacy Policy
It is as Russian company with servers in British Ivory Islands(which keeps it away from the russian gov and the NSA)
It was founded by the brothers Nikolai and Pavel Durov who are the founders of VK and are known to support wikileaks and other "pro-privacy" organisations
It uses their own protocol "MTProto". The company said it would give 200,000 bitcoins to anyone who can find a bug in their protocol. 3 Russion analysts found a few issues and they were given 100,000 and the issues were fixed as soon as possible. Other companies like whatsapp dont care because for many years it has been sending our texts without any encryption and now it uses a very weak type of encryption which can be easily broken by the NSA.
In their Privacy Policy they strictly show that they will NOT share any data with third parties.
But... Why is it better than Whats app ?
All Chats are encrypted. It uses its own encryption(MTProto) which was made to have a balance between speed and security.
- In normal chats it uses Client/Server and Server/Client encryption(which is considered secure based on many security experts who have analyzed the app), here your chats can be accessed on other devices(by signing in ofcourse) through the cloud
- In "Secret Chats" the encryption is Client/Client meaning even the builders of this app cannot see your conversations. Here you cannot access them using the could. That's why secret chat isn't used as default
It is Open-source
It allows you to send files up to 1GB in size
Allows you to send documents, zip or rar files
It has a cloud feature meaning I can access my chats from my computer and other devices, some may see this as insecure.
Cons :
It uses phone numbers(actually its not a big issue since your phone number is already all over the net !!)
Its exactly like whats app ? well its more of a Pro than a con because anyone can easily change to this with the above advantages
Conclusion :
Nothing is 100% secure but it is definitely more secure than any other app here. Also, it will remain free according to their FAQ because their goal is PRIVACY. Also, their may be an option to remove the "Last seen" in the future. Their FAQ answers many questions if you have any head over their.

I love it, I wish it becomes the new standard, but I see a big problem:
I'm from Spain, and now there is a huge hype with this app, but I think this hype will finish before the appearance of apps for Symbian, S40, BlackBerry and all those legacy OS, and people will leave it, because whatsapp is in more devices.
Does someone knows about any app in development for Symbian or S40?
Why do I have to give them my telephone number? :/
.
Ey I start using it a week ago and its insanely awesome!!! Same UI as whatsapp but a big problem is the day to day use of the app for example right now theres not much community I have got like 10 telegram friends out of 100~ that uses whats app.
Another thing they dont got is the verb conjugation we use for example
" I'll send you a whatsapp " > that stands for Ill send a text message by whatsapp. It became as a native verb.
" Ill send you a telegram " > Right now it doesnt make to my mind what do that means.
In Spanish we like to use a lot
" Te mando un whatsapp " " Hablame por Whatsapp " " Tienes Whatsapp " and the word Telegram doesnt is very friendly as the word "whatsapp"
" Te mando un telegram " "Hablemos por Telegram ".
So I really like the app and the Windows Client is just very nice and good to have
Let's wait and hope people like it.
Is it end to end encrypted? Then it would be a great alternative.
What's their business-model, though? Free and no Ads seems like it won't be around for long...

I care a big deal about privacy and don't even use a Google Account. But I think there are a lot of other things to worry about first before worrying about your telephone number. If you give your number to anyone who is using a phone or an app that reads his/her contact list and does whatever with it, your phone number is not a privacy thing anymore.
(Correct me if I'm wrong)

yea but I still don't trust app like this one. It's sad because I very wanted to use it instead of fb messager (which consumes lots of ram in my device). And "Fast for facebook" is not good for me.

Only the secret chat is end to end encrypted, a normal chat is phone-server server-phone, so the conversations can be synced between more devices
It's not a business, it's open source, they didn't make it to earn money
My notifications of Telegram don't seem to work properly. It seems that I only receive messages when I actually open the app.
Notifications are all on. Phone is used in wifi only atm, no SIM.
Anyone any ideas?

So the normal chat is not more secure than whatsapp.
Good to know there is an option for save chats, though.

Server Storage and Traffic don't fall from the sky. Open source is nice and everything, but somebody always has to pay something.
Anyway, the App looks very polished.

It's not the most secure system, but I think it is enough. They tryed to find a balance between security and speed
As he says, I peffer the Text Secure protocol, but its unusefull for me, I don't know one single person who uses it, and I don't like the apps
Questionable
I've been using this app for a while now and trying to get in touch with the devs regarding some basic privacy concerns. Essentially - all our data is stored on their servers (unless in the case of "Secret Chats" - which is not the default / passive option). So what happens if you OR the person you're chatting to gets a new number, loses their existing phone, or just deletes Telegram (as you would WhatsApp)? It seems all our data, chatlogs and files (pictures, videos, media, etc) stays on Telegram's servers indefinitely.
Given that this app is so focused on privacy and security, this seems to be a questionmark.

[APP][6.0+] AirMessage - iMessage on Android

Hello Internet!
I'm looking for testers for my new application - AirMessage! AirMessage allows Mac users to participate in iMessage conversations on Android devices. It is available in beta on the Play Store via an invite.
What is AirMessage, and how does it work?
AirMessage is a service which allows people to use iMessage on their Android phone. It contains a server component, and a client component. The server is to be installed on a Mac computer to route messages to and from the client app. You need a Mac computer and an Android smartphone.
What can it do?
AirMessage contains most of the features you get on iMessage. This includes sending and receiving messages, attachments and even receiving Apple's "bubble / screen effects" and tapback responses - though these iMessage-specific features can only be viewed.
Is it secure?
Your messages are yours, and not accessible to the developers. The server runs on your computer and the data remains on your systems. All communication between the client and the server is encrypted, and the server is password-protected.
Does it work? Can I help test it?
It sure does work! I've been able to send and receive messages and attachments without an issue. However, it isn't ready for public use yet. AirMessage hasn't been fully tested, so there are bound to be bugs. To solve this, I'll be starting a testing group which willing early adopters can join.
How does the testing group work?
The test is a closed beta release. Accepted users will be placed into a G+ community, where they will have access to the app, and be able to talk with myself and other testers.
If you want to be part of the beta, there are a few things you'll need to have first:
- A computer running macOS 10.11 (El Capitan) or higher with iMessage set up
- A smartphone running Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or higher
- A Google (G+) community account (to participate in the beta)
- Some technical know-how
Once you've got all that, send an email to [email protected] with the subject "AirMessage Beta Testing" stating your name, E-Mail address (associated with your Google account), and any background information you'd like to share.
Will it cost anything?
Once AirMessage is released, it will be available for free to anyone who wishes to download it.
The project is non-commercial, so the app will remain free for as long as it exists.

You will need to find a way to upgrade this to El Cap.
Update: Upgrade to High Sierra corrupts the image.

Unfortunately, the upgrade to High Sierra doesn't work. So, you are out of luck with this approach.
You may want to try this instead: https://www.pcsteps.com/2157-mac-os-x-virtual-machine-vmware-player/
Once configured, make sure iMessage is working before following OP instructions. It is possible that iMessage will require an actual MacBook / iMac or a Hackintosh which this is not.

It's not fake and it works. I emailed the dev last Friday and was invited into the beta on Sunday. It's easy to set up and it's stable, hasn't crashed on me once and messages have synced without issue.
helpful
You may see https://windowserrors.org/imessage-on-pc/ for getting complete knowledge about imessage. I pretty sure that it will helpful for you. Good luck.
Been using this on and off and it's really good, completely confused a couple of mates by using my android phone to send them imessages. The only thing left which would make it perfect would be to enable integration with SMS and being able to use your mobile phone number too for sending iMessages.
This seems like a ripoff of someone elses hard work ( weMessage )

[APP][5.0+][TOOLS] Pass2Pay - Add your pkpass or pdf passes to Google Pay

As an Android user, I've been complaining for a long time about one of the biggest faults, the administration of passes and tickets for events.
The funniest thing is that it does have the possibility of doing it through Google Pay, but the way they have implemented it, forces the companies that generate the passes to perform a lot of steps that most are not willing to do.
That's why I've decided to create this app that uses all the Google tools to solve this problem, allowing to import almost any type of pass to our Google Pay account so we can use them very easily.
Pass2Pay.
The specific application is called Pass2Pay, and unlike many others that just store them so you can open them in your application. Pass2Pay, allows you to import them directly into Google Pay.
Thanks to this step, you will be able to automatically consult all your passes and use them in all your devices, since Google will save them in its cloud so you never lose them.

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
How are passes imported?
As you can see in the image above, importing passes can be done in several ways. From the possibility of directly adding an Apple pkpass file, a PDF by reading the barcode or QR or directly from an image that can be captured on the spot.
Once imported, depending on the method used, we will have more or less data from the pass, so the next step will be the revision of the form, from where we can change the type of pass (Offers, airline tickets, gift cards, loyalty cards, etc.) and even modify some missing data.
Google Pay.
The next step is only to add the generated pass to Google Pay, for which we only have to press the button below and we can save it.
Once inside the Google application, we can use it whenever we want to benefit from all the possibilities of Google Pay, such as notification of events, integration with the calendar or the ability to enter the sites without the need to be looking for the typical PDF they send us by mail.
Example.
To check it out, we tried an old movie ticket to go see a Star Wars movie.
In the photos above you can see the steps to follow:
1. We have sent ourselves the pass by telegram to simulate a real situation.
2. We have opened it and the application has recognized it and has detected all the data
3. We gave him to keep on the phone
4. We cared about Google Pay and we were able to use it
As you can see it has been very simple to import a pass that was sent to us, after doing it we could go to the cinema and present it so that they let us in without having to carry the pdf or anything.
Advertising and contributions.
Due to the fact that the application is free, and it has cost me a lot to create it, I have decided that in order to finance it and be able to continue developing interesting things, advertisements will be used, which are limited so that no more than a long ad appears every 3 minutes. I think it's a good ratio to use it comfortably, but I listen to your opinions.
Anyway, if you like the app you can support it with a donation that removes the ads.
Coming soon.
• Possibility of uploading personalized photos to the passes (we need to create and maintain a server so it will cost money / donations)
• Improvements in overall stability
• More ways to import documents
• OCR reading of the PDFs
Download Link :- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=color.dev.com.tangerine
I don’t understand the personalized photos option in the coming soon section. Who is limiting that? Your app or Google?

To send the pass to Google Pay, we have to create it and then send it to their servers. But they do not accept pictures, we have to upload the photos to a server and give the URL to Google.
Where are the images stored? The comments on Reddit make it seem like there's a potential security issue here. Can you clear that up?

Right now we are not uploading the photos anywhere, it's in the coming soon section. Maybe I don't explain it very well as English is not my first language (A lot of people asked already what's the problem with the images in the app... :silly
The problem, it's that Google it's telling us that we have to take care of the images hosting but we don't have the resources to create a server and upload everybody images in there. So right now, we are just taking care of the pases information, the image it's just a static one (our logo). But if the people like our app we plan to make a server to upload the photos.
PS. The comments on Reddit it's because a failure, with the ads outside Europe with Adblock, but we think that it's solved now in v2.7.2 or v2.7.3

I see great potential in your app. The idea is brilliant and I believe everyone who uses Google Pay needs it. Google should have introduced something like this a long time ago but it looks that it wouldn't plan it anytime soon.
But let me ask you something: while there is a lot of things to do to make the application really operative, do you believe that it is a good idea to bother with your own server? Think not only about needed technical engagement but also about decent security, fast communication, etc. There are so many cloud solutions to rent (even from Microsoft or Google) with top performance, backup and security that it is at least questionable if it is worth to burn your own staff, technical capacity, and money. Perhaps you're more needed for further development.

Thank you very much for your comment I really appreciate it.
Sure, we are not planning to create the server on our machines. When I said "create a server" I refer to design the architecture, technologies, APIs and everything.
But thanks for the advise :highfive:
One thing I would like to recommend is a feature for dealing with websites that don't expose Apple Wallet pass download links unless you are on an iPhone. An easy way to implement this feature is to allow users to "Share..." a webpage to Pass2Pay and then have Pass2Pay display an in-app browser window of that page, but with the user agent faked to appear as an iPhone, tricking the site into displaying the Apple Wallet pass download link.

An example of this functionality can be seen in the app Pass2U, which has the functionality I mentioned (though the resulting passes are saved in the app itself). As for example websites where this feature is needed, that is a bit tough, as you would have to buy a ticket to see it in action. I know for a fact that American Airlines does this as well as my local movie theater, but that probably isn't much help.

Hey man! Nice app you made here! I'm trying it and I'm running into a problem though: When I try to add my boarding pass (via PDF, completing all the missing fields), the app says the flight number is wrong when I try to upload it to Google Pay (flight number VY1572, I've even tried with other shared codes like IB5050). Do you have an idea as to what could I be doing wrong?
Thank you so much, keep up the good work!!

Hi Robdyx thank you very much for your nice work and support.
The problem is that the real flight number is 1572 or 5050, the letters correspond to the IATA parameter. But yes it's a problem, it's a little bit messy, we need to make it a little more user friendly.
Greetings from Spain!
Thank you! That didn't come to my mind for some reason. Maybe putting the IATA code grated out (not modificable un that field) in front of the number would make it more intuitive that only the numbers are required. Or making it character sensitive. Anyway, thank you for this great tool!
Un abrazo!

+1 for this, or maybe put the IATA code and flight number on the same row but with the flight number to the right? So it directly follows the airline letters? I guess the drop-down arrow could also be to the left then

Even after upgrade with OCR I can't upload any data (no element could be detected) from the ticket and no ticket could be detected from files (either pdf or picture). There is indeed a limited possibility to capture the ticket with the camera but still, no field is filled automatically. Is it just me doing something wrong or this functionality is yet to be available?
