[Q] New Droid Maxx User, a bit confused..... - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just purchased a new Droid Maxx and I'm finding it a bit confusing here at XDA. Per System Panel app (Because it's not listed in the "About Phone" section of the settings), I have model XT1080.
1) Is the "Droid Maxx" the same as "Droid Razr Maxx"?
2) This phone has been great out of the box (since bloatware can be disabled), so has rooting/custom ROM use been favorable for most?
3) I don't see a "Droid Maxx" section here at XDA, so it appears that I would follow the "Ultra" section for development info?
Hope these don't seem to be stupid questions but I've had a rooted Dinc2 for a while and have used this site for everything and it has been great. Just some incredible minds and resources here. I just want to make sure I'm going to the right place and wanted some feedback on rooting it.
Thanks.

1) Not the same
2 )I assume you have the consumer edition and not the Developer Edition. So no unlocking the bootloader. If you want root, do NOT upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat as there is no way to root 4.4 unless you rooted 4.2.2. No ROMs (we JUST received CM 11 for the Dev edition this evening)
3) Yes, the Maxx and the Ultra are essentially the same device

Thanks so much for the info. I thought I had read somewhere that the XT1080 was a developer edition, so I'm glad you pointed that out.
And, since I updated to KK a couple days after I activated it, looks like I'm screwed for now as far as rooting......oh well, it's a great device as is.

Hey, I am shopping for a phone for my wife who is switching from the iphone. The battery life is a big deal for her, but I have also heard great things about this phone (call quality, good camera, etc). This thread answered a couple things for me, but only hinted at another. If I buy a new Droid Maxx will it me on 4.2 or 4.4? Sounds like the OP just got one with 4.2. Do I need to check before purchasing?
Secondly is it true you can eliminate bloatware with this phone? No TBU needed?
Thanks!

I've used only rooted phones since I learned it could be done but I'm seriously considering leaving this Maxx as is. Battery life is off the charts, although I still charge every night out of habit. I don't think I've gone below 50% in a 24 hour period yet and I play with my phone constantly.
I didn't get a look at which version it came with (4.2 I assume) but I got 2 updates almost back to back a day or so after I activated it, the second of which was K K 4.4. Most all bloatware can be disabled via Settings>Apps, so that was a great change for me coming from a GB Dinc2.
I'm sure I'll root it, eventually, out of boredom but it's been great so far. It's much larger than I imagined but that's just a plus for me. The only negative I have found is that it seems hard for me to find the "sweet spot" on the earpiece to hear callers clearly. Not sure if this is a low in-call volume issue or just me having to adjust to a new phone.
I would highly recommend this device.

That all sounds good. I checked out Verizon's site and noticed that they say it comes with KK 4.4, but that might mean that it OTA's to 4.4 but actually ships with something they put on at the factory months ago. In any case I think this is the phone I am going with. Any weaknesses I should know about?

The phone should come with the 12.7.7 OTA which is still Jelly Bean. Weaknesses... None really. It's a powerful device. My only complaint is how bright the screen is at the lowest setting.

If you can get a look at the box before plunking down money, it gives the installed version on the label. Look for "S/W: 12.7.7.obake" or "S/W: 12.15.15.obake". Those are 4.2 (pre-camera update and post). Be sure you are ready to hit "later" on the update prompt when the phone is first powered on - don't let the salesperson do it. Just tell them you don't want the KitKat update.

Many of the bloatware apps can be disabled, which effectively takes them out of the picture (they are still there). Some can't be disabled, but the stuff left isn't too obnoxious. I think it's a pretty good compromise.

Yes. You have the pre-camera update 4.2.2.
Look for the procedures posted by NWKENT. Read them carefully, follow them to a tee. Miss no steps. And you can get there.
Here is the link: http://waynekent.com/page6.html

Q3 rollout though? It might as well not be coming out at all. I feel certain that sometime between now and Q3 I will not be able to resist picking up some stupidly powerful quadcore tegra3 (or similar) device which will have launched with ICS, and probably for a decent price.
It all leaves me imagining that Motorola only have a single solitary developer with a shoestring budget tasked with putting out the software upgrades for their existing range of phones. Why else would it take so long?
Anyway, looks like our own wonderful development community is the place to pin our hopes for some kind of ICS goodness, within a reasonable time frame.

Not a big fan of the trombone. I mean, I respect it as an instrument, and the people who play it as musicians, but it would have been much more helpful if you had picked something like a cello (which I also like much more than the violin).
You know, just FYI.

We'll get ICS WAYYYYYY before Q3. The dev are working on it as we speak the only thing stopping them is that they're missing the telephony.apk which we need in order to connect to a GSM network. Without it we have a really small tablet with ICS.
Since we know that there is ATLEAST 1 dev in Motorola working on it that means that there will be a working APK with any betas/alphas that get out into the wild. As soon as that happens you can bet jim or lfaber will jump on it and fisnish their ICS masterpiece and maybe make CM7 or CM9 with it.

That is exactly correct!!!
So everyone keep checking cheesecake, ALL servers at least once a day, that is how we will find an early version, as we did with 2.3.6 months before it was out officially. If we get that, then yes we can get CM9 working.
I might have CM7 out here by the weekend, at least that is what I am hoping, but it is still not ICS, it is the 2.3.6 version.
I know its not as fast as we'd prefer, but isnt it nice to hear SOMETHING official from Moto about this phone? We all have been in limbo, heard assumptions, conflicting rumors/"inside" info, so I like that we at least know the future of our device, officially.

Well, after trying every phone out there (including a brand new unlocked Galaxy Nexus (returned), SGSII, HTC Vivid, etc.) I can say without a doubt the A2 is the all-around best android phone out there for AT&T. I have come back to it everytime after finding the other phones were either cheaply built, couldn't hold a signal, couldn't obtain gps lock, or took crappy pics. While the A2 doesn't do any one thing extraordinarily better than other devices, the phone does everything well with good battery life and great screen to boot.
ICS will definitely make the A2 a keeper, especially if can finally unlock the bootloader for some custom kernel goodness
Q3 is July - September, when September comes expect an announcement about delays and when 2013 come expect your atrix 2 on ebay.

New AT&T Atrix 2 User.

Hi! I just bought yesterday an Unlocked Atrix 2 from AT&T, it came with Android 2.3.6 (55.13.25.MB865,ATT.en.US) Pure stock, not rooted, brand new.. My question is.. What should i know about this device? Is it Getting an official OTA of ICS soon? I don't want to root it yet, i'd like to receive official ICS Update via OTA, then root and play with it. I'm in argentina, and sometime while surfing the web with 4G i lose network connection and reconnects itself after a few secs, someone has experienced that? The Screen is a little yellowish all over white colours, normal too or what? Thanks A2 Users!

Hi. And, welcome to the community..
It's a good device, but it has a locked bootloader which prevents us from installing truly custom roms or custom kernels. But, as you will notice, the guys around here can do some pretty cool stuff with what limited capabilities we've got. (The unlock you are referring to is the subsidy unlock for different carriers, I assume).
Yes, depending on your definition of soon, the official ICS is coming soon-ish (my guess is august for the at&t us builds). And simply rooting, should have no impact on receiving or installing the official ota update - it's the other stuff you do with root that screws up the install of the ota - but we have ways to fix up your system for the ota..
Never been to Argentina, but I have experienced bad data connections depending where I'm at.
The yellowish color is not normal. At least mine doesn't look yellow. And since yours came stock 2.3.6 (most come 2.3.5 out of the box), and it's sim is unlocked, so it may be refurbished or slightly used.. not sure what causes the yellow.. do you have a screen guard that discolors it?
Hope that helps. Good luck with everything.

I've never noticed a "yellow" tint, but I do have some darkish blotches in the center of where my keyboard would appear that may be from mashing the screen too hard while angry texting crazy girls...

Wow! So many replies in just Minutes.. Thanks a lot, i feel confortable asking here now. First of all its Sim Unlocked, you can use it with any carrier. About "Yellowish" tint all over, is hard to tell when it is noticeable, for example, when you surf in Google Play, while loads the screen of a selected app, you can see the background the yellowish tint is a bit noticeable, also in Wifi settings and others, but colors in photos and everything is perfectly normal.. Probably i'm a bit daltonic or paranoid. I'm happy to know that our phone will have ICS in August, i think the wait will worth, i saw Droid Razr running ICS and, OMG so smooth, so perfect..! The only i complain about is about the stock browser, wich provides a laggy experience -.- but overall performance is good! I like the build quality, its a very good looking phone, looks very professional and feels like a premium phone. Not like the cheap plastics Samsung GS2 i own, it feels like a toy compared to A2! I'm uploading photos of the phone right now.

I agree, it feels like a good quality piece of hardware. Oh, and August was just my guess, the official word from Moto is Quarter 3, which goes until like late September I think.. so who actually knows..
As for browsers, yup, the stock GB browser is horrible in my opinion also.. I'm sticking with Boat Browser - keeps getting updates and getting better. Also, Firefox is available for GB, and for ICS, you can get Chrome (but it's still pretty bare bones - plus the stock ics browser uses chrome parts I believe..). Just try a few out, and you'll find a nice replacement browser...

We have plenty of great devs here that make amazing things happen for this phone.

Brand new to the Galaxy Note 3

Hi all just a quick thread to say that im new to the Galaxy Note 3 N9005.
I bought it online yesterday only paid £320 for a brand new sim free in a sealed box so got a real bargain.
First impressions are wow, what a beast. So much power. So fast. So much battery life.
In the past i have ported apps for the Galaxy S3 I9300 ( previous device ) and once I have gotten used to this device I will start porting some more apps where possible and where needed.
So hopefully I will be seing you all around the forum.

Is it the 16 or 32gb one?

Cheers,

Nice price. I got one a smidge more from ebay. Problem is the buggers lie about having things in stock, so I'm waiting at least 10 days before they even post it.

To get it that cheap, and local, nice. Didn't even think of checking out Gumtree over here (Australia). Looking now.. I probably should have. D: Damn, there's a N9000 going for $400 new. Or 16GB N9005 $465 new. Cry.

Hey there Avenger!
I wrote a (long) guide on the Note 3 and Android in general on how to get the most out of it, I think it might be of some help to you !!
First things first, the Snapdragon version is much better (4G, faster processor, better battery life).
And the Black colour is better it has leathered-texture, the white still feels plasticky. Besides, white bezels on a black screen look horrid.
Secondly, we've got a really stable 4.3 base, its solid. The 4.4 is good too, but has a few bugs for heaps of people.
Because of that, 4.3 is actually better since stepping up to 4.4 gives you no advantages.
And if you upgrade to 4.4 you CANNOT downgrade back to 4.3, which means you miss out on Alliance ROM by sparky_b, its teh bestest.
Sticking with Samsung/TouchWizz base is better because you get proper drivers for the cameras, radios, and all the stability/endurance. No need to tweak it yourself.
Also you get some exclusive goodies like Samsung Store (freebies), Samsung Dive (Find my iPhone equivalent) and first-party apps like Phone, Contacts, Camera, S Pen which are vastly superior to AOSP ones. And stuff like Auto-launch Action/App when S Pen removed, Palm rejection when the S Pen is removed, Air command shortcut, Take a screen shot, Contextual Menu/Popups when pen hovers over, Alarm when S Pen left behind and finally MULTI-WINDOW function.
So here's what you should do:
1-r00t the device with CF-ROOT (easy) or use Root de la Vega to keep Knox counter on 0x0 (warranty purposes).
2-install a custom Recovery like TeamWin (easy) or use kn0x0ut (keep warranty)
3-backup your efs/system (just in case you might need it later)
4-flash VillainMOD or a Stock ROM (and de-bloat it, if need be).
Step 5: Add some powerful MODs!
Some helpful MODs like Volume Booster, SecMMS, Unlimited MultiWindow, Call Record are there to fix what Samsung broke.
Step 6: Xpose the potential with The Xposed Module
Installing the phenomenal Xposed framework, and these few handy modules are a must (XPrivacy, Adblock, Tinted Status Bar, XBlast Tools, GravityBox, Xposed Additions, etc etc)
Step 7: Contribute back to this community
Buy the dev's a beer, I mean a few bucks is nothing... but it goes a LONG way to motivate devs and help them keep going!
Also buy PRO versions of Apps from The Google Market especially;
SuperSU, Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, 500px, Apex, Kii, SwitchR (I'm sure I missed a couple).
Step 8: Accessorize (my top picks)
- This awesome case
- This awesome screen protector
- This memory card
- This desk/bedroom cradle
- This car cradle
- This car fast-charger
- This Portable Miracast dongle
- This controller to use the Sixaxis App and play games with this mount/diy to place the phone over the controller
- Otherwise, this easier but less advanced solution, The MOGA pocket / PRO controller
Step 9: Gaming!
There's heaps of free and paid Android Games, I won't list any here.
But to get the most out of it you'll need to grab one of those controllers listed above and its associated SIXAXIS App / MOGA App (screen taps mapped to physical buttons on controllers).
These emulators which run fullspeed, with sound, no frameskip, and no problems:
PS One (FPSe)
Nintendo 64 (Mupen64)
Gameboy Advance (VGBA)
SNES (Super GNES)
Sega (iGensNoid)
These other emulators which (aren't finished/smooth) but might be useful:
PSP (PPSSPP)
DS Lite (DraStic)
Dreamcast (Reicast)
Windows 98/DOS (Winulator)
...whew that was a lot of typing and a lot of information, I deserve a Thanks : )
I will give you thanks for that.
And yes eventually i will be rooting and custom recovery ( already download ) plus already got a stock odin firmware.
Phone is fully upgraded to KK and i will be using on stock for a week to truley test this beauty.
Then i will root, custom kernel, maybe a few mods.
I will be keeping the rom as it is so no custom rom as dont want to loose any goodness.
Mine is of course the 4G varient.

You just make my second good day with that post mate. :good: I thought 4.3 rom was bad side on my N9005, guess I was wrong.
I got excellent deal on brand new N9005 sim unlocked and sealed and grab it. I held my friends note 2 and I was really impressed with it since I was thinking it would be too big in my hand so I'll have difficulties handling with it, guess what it was just the opposite, I love it!
My old i9000 did his job pretty well until replacement screen went bad.
Yay mine just arrived.
Turned it on.. the start up jingle got cut off. And then it just did that pulsating logo glow at me for... I don't know... ten minutes.
Since it felt like I was installing Windows on at PC I tried the PC solution; held down power for 10 seconds. That actually worked and it turned off. Turn on again, cut off jingle again, pulsating glow again.
Is this supposed to happen?
If I read the above the first thing I'd ask is "Is it a clone?"
But I'm as sure as can be from appearances that it isn't.

Its not meant to happen.
First use, it should pause for 2 minutes then put you to Samsung's Setup Screen.
Sounds like your unit is either factory defective, used by someone and bricked (fixable?), a dummy unit, or a clone.
There's a thread here, check that and make sure its not a dummy or a clone.
After that contact the seller, and see if you could get a replacement since yours arrived defective.
And if that's not an option, and it is genuine... see if you can use Odin and flash something to it like root/CWM. It could just be that the boot loader is not compatible with the kernel/ROM... so flashing a different kernel/ROM might solve the issue. You can flash a different boot loader, but you really need to be careful with such things.
A factory reset and cache wipe appears to have fixed the problem.
Perhaps it's just because I threw the battery in and tried to use it straight away? Is it normal to expect no proper operation out of the box until it's charged? It was also getting hot in literally zero seconds while doing its pulsatey glowy business.
After the reset, it finally booted to whatever setting screen and promptly died (battery). So now it's charging.
But yeah. Had to factory reset a device fresh out of the box. What the. :|
My only guess is that it just didn't want to behave with the virgin battery and that somehow messed things up. The phone/package looks as legit as legit can be. Stylus tips, seal, branding, the whole shebang.

That's typical behaviour of a dead battery. But in your case I don't know what is the deal.
I didn't know you were able to do a factory reset (from recovery?). I thought you were just stuck in a bootloop.
Anyways, enjoy your new spouse ; )
Is there any chance you could root N9005XXUDMJ7 firmware without tripping knox counter?

Need help with rooting Galaxy s3

I have a Galaxy S3 I535 unlocked Verizon phone running Android 4.4.2 and the kernel date is May 20th 2014. Not sure if that helps out anyone knowledge wise, but there ya go. Anywho, I am new to this and need to know how to get to stock Android. I don't use Verizon service, would like to get the bloatware off the phone including the crapola Samsung software as well, My husband keeps telling to leave well enough alone but I did pay for the phone would like to customize to my liking.
I have researched different videos on Saferoot, read about some of this stuff and I am kind of afraid that I will brick the phone because I am completely 100 percent noob to this. I guess we all start somewhere. I should update to a S4 unlocked but I am not rolling in the dough just yet.
If someone could help walk me through it, or just tell me if its even possible to root the phone that would help. I appreciate any and all advice.

One thing you forgot to mention, there are rumors of a small update which patches towelroot. You'll need to freeze or rename two apps after rooting, sdm.apk and fwupgrade.apk both located in the system folder.

Ok I got my phone rooted, I checked it with Root Checker. I also got some bloatware off the phone. Thanks to everyone that helped me do that!!
Now another question how do I get a STOCK version of Android 4.4? Or can I roll to a different version of Android say 4.3? I hate Touchwiz, I think its making my phone lag a bit.
I have a little bit of screen stutter when you scroll through like the settings or when I play CCrush and the candies fall down the screen, it might hesitate a fraction of a second. Its basically like the scroll stutter. Will getting a stock rom on the phone fix that? I know I am in need of a new battery because it runs down kinda quick.
I bought the phone used, no scratches or scrapes but whoever had it before me took care of it but its just an older phone. S3-I535 of course. I just would like to make it run not like a new one but close to a new one if possible?
Also thanks again to everyone that helped me with rooting the phone. I hate all that VZW crap. I run off ATT now, wish that I could make it come up with that stuff but I am no where near advanced enough to even try doing that. I would just love to make it look like my Nexus 7 2012.

If your on the baseband of NE1 then no you can't rollback to an earlier version. As it would be a nice option you are unable to do so. There is one other rom you can flash but you'd have to utilize safestrap. And I agree VZWs ways of doing things are completely out in left field. They think and do whatever they want and hold us customers with a strangle hold.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
Yeah I have NE1 and since some of what you said makes sense, some doesn't I am guessing I will have to stick with what I have unless I wanna trade in my phone for a unlocked version that has never seen VZW or ATT or any company at all. I should have done that to begin with but at the time I didn't have funds.
Heck, Id even go for a S4 or S3 Mini as long as it wasn't branded by some corporation. No I am not one of those that damn everything LOL. So I can only go with a stock rom of 4.4.2? That is ok I guess. I was watching a Youtube video of someone flashing a S3 to a rom, looked like he had just bought the phone. I think it was a link that I found here on this site. Thanks everyone for helping this noob housewife.

Not a problem, we all can help in one way or another. Yea there is a 4.4.2 rom in here for those who are locked down to VZW, here it is.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2805797
And sadly neither VZW or AT&T versions are unlocked and with the newest update on the vzw s3 (it's a small update) It patches towelroot and you will no longer be able to root.
Mine initially came with 4.1.2 and knowing how VZW is I rooted and unlocked immediately. I didn't take any OTA updates and I can flash nearly anything but Yea I agree with the not having money part

Ok so will I get off easily flashing like the guy in the video I watched? He did it all from the phone that I could see, he booted into Odin mode (android laying on its back) and wiped data, wiped something else, installed from sd and it booted back like a brand new phone just out of the box.
Or is there another bunch of steps that I will have to do first before I even begin to flash?
Something else, the stutter that I am getting when scrolling, I have fooled around n the dev options like I have read on here to do and I am still noticing some stutter. It says on Samsung's site that I am still under warranty (if I unroot it) and I guess I could send it to them but who knows what it will cost or if it will even fix it. Its not terrible and as long as it doesn't get worse I can deal with it until I can afford a S4 if that time ever comes.
It makes some of the graphics a bit stuttery as well, like when the swirling Samsung logo comes up on boot.
Thanks again yall, everyone has been so nice and helpful!!!

Sadly that video only applies if you utilize the jtag service which can bring you back to Android version 4.1.2 which then unlocks the ability to unlock the bootloader letting you flash roms if your choosing as long as they don't say "locked bootloader" in the thread. I'd suggest doing this in developer options, see screenshot
Change the 3 animation scales to 0.5x that should help

AOSP Oreo Project for Fire HD 10 (2017)
DESCRIPTION:
This is a project to compile an Oreo ROM for Fire HD 10 2017 (Suez) from scratch, using stock Google sources for 8.1.0_r23. Now that my project for compiling Safestrap had been put on halt, I'm thinking about compiling this to be compatible with FlashFire.
PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD:
I know that placeholder threads are not allowed on XDA. So, this thread is open for suggestions by everyone! But, if a lot of people want LineageOS instead of AOSP, tell me immediately, because it will be impossible to change after a few days. I chose AOSP because it is fresh, and got latest sources. :yum:
TESTING:
Please take into account that I don't own this device, so please excuse for any delays that may happen.

Thank you, and I hope that we'll be able to run fresh Oreo cool on this little (not really) tablet!
I thought that the locked bootloader meant that it was only possible to have a Lollipop based ROM for this device?

Um, I've seen other Lollipop devices with more than Lollipop? Really, I've got to research a bit.

I don't know enough about it to be sure, but based on comments on the Amazon Fire 7 forum: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64804381&postcount=7 and the fact that all custom ROMS for the Fire 7 are Lollipop based I assumed this was the case. I do have an old Kindle Fire HD 7 (Amazon Tate) with a Nougat based ROM, but this requires an unlocked secondary bootloader which is flashed before the ROM. Why something similar can't be done for newer Amazon devices is above my pay grade, but I know these already have locked secondary bootloaders preinstalled.
Edited to finish post: submitted accidentally incomplete.

If that is what it takes, let that be. I'm not gonna back up, definitely not now.

Really, I'm not going to kneel in front of Amazon because of this. I'm getting the keys, one way or the other.
For me personally I wouldn't even care if it was AOSP or LineageOS, all we really need would be a clean OS near to stock, maybe rooted and safetyNet passing and everything would be fine.
But please, don't wake false expectations or hope...don't get me wrong, I would really be grateful to use the tablet with a nice OS like AOSP or lineage, but I surely was disappointed when I opened the thread...

Wow, sorry about that! @diplomatic can you please shed some light on whether it's possible to install an 8.1 system without touching the boot? If it doesn't, I'm going to compile a Lollipop ROM for now, you will not regret flashing it, anything is better than the bloated so-called "FireOS"
Well, I've never ported a ROM myself, so keep that in mind. IMO, you should first try to build a Lollipop ROM, at least as a stepping stone to a more recent version. Because it's kind of a nightmare trying to port binaries from the stock FW to a different version of Android. I'm not sure if it's possible to keep the stock boot image. Every ROM build produces its own boot image that includes a ramdisk. I guess it's possible in theory with some hacks. But you really have to know what's going on.
Oh, and I would really really recommend for LoneFlux to get his own Fire HD for this project. I don't really know how this is possible to do remotely. This will require some intense experimentation, testing and reverse engineering to get done. It's an uphill battle to say the least...
I have hope!
I am currently working on a 2017 Fire HD 10. What I find horrible about amazon products like this is that they really don't want the user to be able to get away from amazon crap. Netflix cannot be used on this device unless you go through amazon stuff. Even though technically speaking the regular app is available through side-loaded google play, it will still not install through google play because of a amazon app that checks for side-loaded apps like netflix. Vimeo is another app that will not work. Several games that are also available from amazon for a fee but also available on Google play is also blocked.
So, this particular tablet came from ebay. The seller refuses to spend any time de-registering it from amazon(which would literally take less than 5 minutes) so it dooms me to not being able to get full functionality from Amazon because you cannot re-register a fire if there is a current registered user. Great stuff, really. The anti-theft systems do serve a purpose and I understand that, but come on. This is a prime example of being taken advantage of. The seller is not being reasonable, bad rating, but it does nothing really. So I am stuck with a tablet that is useless for about 20% of the things that I want to do with it.
I have rooted it, and uninstalled a lot of the bloatware on it. Then I side-loaded several sdk files from google to get their services working...and they do work well. I would really love to see a Android OS come out for this that has nothing to do with Amazon.
If you want to root, there is a good thread here at xda that will give you about 18 steps(pretty easy though) to root.
Side-loading google services is really easy too, just google it.
To any who read this put the word out, that we want to see a real version of oreo or nougat come out for this thing...and if you know of one then please post links.
REDACTED
I have a rooted Fire HD10 on 5.6.0.1, and it really is a great tablet, the OS however is not.. I'm following the amazing work you guys are doing, and I have high hopes for the project!

Excuse me, but that was clear for the last several generations. These Amazon Fire products are the most locked down things ever. It's pretty obvious Amazon has been doing everything in its power to keep you from unlocking them. That's because their revenue directly depends on them being locked down. You can be sure that they're not making much if any profit on the hardware. This tablet for example, is just a gateway to everything Amazon: shopping, movies, books, etc. I mean, the HD10 is priced at $110 on sale. A similar tablet, the Asus Z301MF, with the same chip, resolution and so on, is $220. If Amazon was interested in selling you just another Android tablet, you can bet it would be in the latter price range. So I don't get why people who care at all about modding their Android device keep buying these stupid things and rewarding companies for locking down devices. Same deal as discounted smartphones that are tied to your phone carrier. No profit is made on the handset itself. You should know what you're getting into beforehand.

The exact reason we know that they are never going to release a BL unlock.
Anyway, I received this as a gift. I knew about FireOS (and I hoped to put stock Android on it, and I was surely shocked to see that there's not at least root, I knew about root because I rooted my good old SM-G360H with Kingoroot, just to remove the preloaded 'Internet' app and use Chrome as a system app.) and to be honest, I was just an another one like 99.9% of device owners, knowing nothing about these modding things then, that's before 5 months, in December 2017. I agree with what you said, but, more than the joy of a modded device, I appreciate the excellent learning path provided by these devices. I didn't knew about ADB at all when I received this, now I can compile a custom ROM from scratch.
Summarizing, if it weren't for the bloated FireOS and my locked-down Amazon Fire HD 8, I'd still recognize ADB as a misarranged collection of weird letters.
Excuses Excuses.
I did not purchase this, a friend did. I am simply trying to get it to function correctly. A long story short. This tablet is on the black list at Amazon because it was not properly de-registered before it was sold. My friend who bought it did not know this, and was having issues getting anything to work because everything is tied to the amazon subscription services. He sent it to me, I immediately called Amazon and was told it was black listed(meaning it was never going to be able to be registered to a new user until the old user removed it from their list of registered devices). My friend has been attempting to get in touch with the ebay seller who sold it, and has had no luck. It is after the 14 day satisfaction guarantee which ebay seems to want to enforce even though the auction where my friend purchased this said specifically that the tablet was 100% working and Amazon ready.
So I side-loaded google services and play store which allows the tablet to do most everything, but NETFLIX and a few other apps are not usable at all(says they are not compatible) because Amazon requires these apps be downloaded through them, even though fundamentally the apps are the same.
So, this is the story of what led me to look into a custom rom. Anything new enough to run Netflix and be compatible with this tablet would be good enough, but no one has one because of the trouble with the loader. I have yet to see anyone post anything about Fire HD 10(2017) being capable of running a normal Android OS.
ADB is nice, it will let you get rid a quite a few amazon tied apps, but no matter what you do, you are still tied to them and if you cannot register then you will not have full functionality because some things just won't work through Google Play.

Either way. But it looks like the FireOS blocks Netflix from opening.

I am using Netflix every day. Never had an issue.
Netflix and Fire HD 10
I am uncertain. Let me explain quickly what it is that I believe is wrong.
I do not have the ability to download anything because of it being blacklisted as I mentioned before unless I download it through google play. I am assuming side loading it is the same as using google play? Because I cannot find the app on the net that does not bring it through the play store...or amazon.
If you know differently please explain.
