Help - media playback not working - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I have rooted a brand new phone this weekend and it has been running fine for the last 3 or 4 days, until today that it started to continuously play and pause media playback ( audio and video). I tried different players but all have the same problem. Any idea what to check?

Ps also phone calls are stuttering

Sounds like something is hogging resources on your phone. Try to identify it using a system monitoring app.

By activating the processor usage on the dev tools, I dont' see any process hogging the cpu. Also now I am trying a custom kernel and the media app just pauses on its own after a few seconds.
I have now tried to connect the headphone and the music is playing, but as soon as I unplug it I hear the music breafly from the speaker and then it pauses. Could it be a loose contact in the headphone jack on the phone?

Music starting when I turn off bluetooth

So no matter what application I'm using on my Radar and how I exit the app, i.e., just pause, back all the way out, etc. the music starts playing again when I turn off my BT headset. I've tried looking through settings to no avail.
bump........

That's odd. Music should automatically stop playing when your bluetooth device is shutoff.
It should not automatically start.
Please describe every detail of what you are doing, connected to, etc. Order and timing might be important.

Starting with phone idle
Turn on Bluetooth headset
Verify it is connected in Settings
Back out and go to a streaming app (has occurred in slacker and metroradio)
Stream music for any given amount of time
Either pause music, pause and back all the way out, just back all the way out, etc.
Shut screen/put in pocket
Turn off bluetooth headset
Music starts playing from phone speaker
Bump - happened again tonight. This time I paused from the lock screen just to test. Paused -> Screen Off -> BT off -> 10 seconds later, music starts
does it happen if you shut bluetooth off before shutting screen off?
Does it happen with Zune as music player ? Also does these apps have any settings for this kind of situation.

I don't use Zune. The only setting in Slacker is if I want Radio to resume automatically when Bluetooth is connected and that is turned off. Metro has nothing.
BUMP.........
You need the app "Stop the Music!
I had the same problem on my Lumia 800 today.. so awkward.....
I was at work and use a Logitech bluetooth docking station, playing music was fine, no problem at all.. I work a shoppingmall and while on my break I went in the another store just next to mine. A really hot girl works there and this lyrics came on highest volume:
"I'm fat, I'm Single, I'm ready to mingle"
here's a youtube link... Never been so embarrassed in my life, I managed to save my ass but only just! A fix would be superb!

I've had the same issue with the background audio from Podcasts! Pro. It doesn't do this with Zune. I'm guessing its an issue with the way the background api is being implemented.
Another thing i've noticed, when it switches to or from BT, the audio picks up from the last point before BT is connected. Example, if I'm listening to an hour long podcast, and I get 23 minutes into it before switching to BT, even when I listen to another 20 minutes of the podcast, it will revert back to the 23min point once BT is disconnected.
Same issue here
Hi,
I'm having the same issue here with a Mercedes B180 built in Handsfree and Lumia 800.
It happens with Wimp, not Spotify.
As a matter of fact music Streaming is not working at all from any app to this HF.
However: BT with my combination is ok for Contact Transfer and Phone functions so it's not a catastrophy, but....
One other thing: When turning ignition off, ongoing calls are disrupted and not returned to the handset...
Nokia Support said that this is a issue caused by them using the Microsoft BT Stack for Music Streaming while probably Mercedes is using some other (Widcomm, Toshiba...)
BTW: I've used iPhone in this scenario and it works fine with all functions.

Stock Music App songs stuttering slightly

Hello all,
I got My VZW branded M8 on launch day and have been getting used to it and checking 20 times a day to see if a perm root solution has been found or better yet an S-Off method. On to my issue in the past few days I've had some time to listen to some mp3s from an SD card on the M8's stock music app and I have found that there is an audible stutter randomly occurring 3-5 times per song. The same mp3 played in poweramp plays smooth. The same SD card played the same songs smoothly in my DNA. So I'm lead to believe there some issue with the stock music app. I tested with screen timeout disabled, motion gestures disabled and still got the same thing.
Did anyone notice the same issue or is it just my phone.
It sounds like song skipped a beat or someone bumping a CD player, not really a sound but just the timing got out of sync for an instant. The first time I just thought it was a error in mp3 then I picked up that it was happening continually but could not be reproduced by replaying the same section of music. I love poweramp but the stock music player should function correctly on a flagship phone and IMO. I like the HTC stock music app as it lets me stream music from my DLNA server on my network, so I like it to function properly.
Kind Regards,
mc
Maybe try a factory reset since its obviously not a hardware issue if a third party app is working perfectly. Only music player i use is the stock HTC Music app and never had any issues with it across the board. Works perfect here even streaming over BT in the car or BT stereo headsets.
No stuttering here, but i've had tracks reset to start after short inactivity. I listen to audiobooks and had to go use Google Play Music because my chapters kept starting over after pausing them.

I've actually been having this issue but over Bluetooth only but my audio never skips when I have a 3.5mm jack plugged in. I'm getting a new Bluetooth device and I'll report back on my findings.
Have not had this issue with my Verizon M8. I have all my music (about 20gb) on the sd card, and normally play through the 3.5mm jack.
The one thing I did notice is, with my old htc phone, when playing music and a notification came in, it would interrupt the music and play the notification. I liked this because I would know to look at my phone. With this one, there is NO interruption of the music. So I can be in my car for a half hour playing music, and not know of any texts or emails unless I look at the phone. Anyone know a solution?
UPDATE: I tried using another Bluetooth device and the same problem occurred. Also to note, I'm having this issue with the stock music app & PlayerPro. However, if I reboot my phone the problem does not occur and I'm able to play music through my Bluetooth device without stutters.
@mc_365: Trying to see if we have anything in common. When music stutters, are you connected via Bluetooth? By any chance are you rooted & did you freeze any apps? Do you have the problem while connected to a 3.5mm jack?
UPDATE (9:32a PT): I just tried a factory reset & I'm still having the problem. Anybody have any other suggestions?

I'm not rooted and trying to play music through my Camaro bluetooth from Play Music it just constantly skips. I am running on ART and will switch back to dalvik to see if that fixes it. If not, I'm going to exchange my phone or return it all together.
UPDATE:
I switched back to Dalvik and did a factory reset to make sure everything was done properly. Now Google Play Music doesn't skip when I play music through my car. Are any of you on ART runtime by chance?
I just came back from Verizon & exchanged my M8; I'll have to check to see if that helped.

Are you playing music from your SD card or internal memory?

I never messed around with changing Dalvik/ART; I checked and I'm running Dalvik. Are you playing music off your SD card or internal memory over Bluetooth when you're having this problem?
I'm just playing mp3s from SD card on a regular pair of earphones. I think maybe my issue is the HTC decoder just doesn't like the CD rip I was playing, maybe the bitrate or the error handling within the app or something like that. I've played other mp3s now and can't say that this is something that is consistently happening.
I have all my songs on external sd card. I can try streaming Pandora in my car and see if any stuttering If that makes a difference? I did though download a few so to internal storage and played over Bluetooth in my car on the way home without stuttering. Played the same as the songs on my external sd card.
I have an obnoxious stutter on the Netflix app through speakers and headphone jack. Noticed it through play movies today also. Reset did nothing. Sadly it isn't noticeable for it to pass through the replacement check

I get the occasional skip when streaming over bluetooth from my SD card. I'd suspect it has more to do with the I/O read ahead or scheduler than anything. It seems to happen whether or not the screen is on, so I don't think it's a processor hang or anything like that.
I hope this update helps anyone with the same issue. :fingers-crossed:
*knock on wood
I noticed that the skips were less and far between if I was playing music over Bluetooth using the internal memory. So what I did is take another SD card and played music on that. This resulted in no skips that I could tell. Perhaps it might be a defective SD card or bad format so I reformatted the SD card completely (full not quick) and so far I'm having less skips in music. I ordered up the 128 GB SanDisk card & hopefully I won't have any skips using that card.
I'm thinking once we get a permanent root & S-Off we can try putting AOSP on our M8s & see if that eliminates the issue completely. :fingers-crossed:
If anybody else can share any suggestions on what to try, that would be great!

This is the problem I'm experiencing that brought me to this thread. Did you ever find a solution? Both Google Play Music and Stock HTC Music play over the notification. My podcast app, Pocket Casts, appropriately gives focus to notification sounds every time.

In sum, the potential fix is to change the read-ahead buffer from 512 to 1024, and the guy said it worked for several days with no further updates. He happened to be running Viper when he made the changes... apparently it uses the stock kernel. I am running CleanROM with stock kernel, so I just installed trickster and changed my read-ahead buffer to 1024. I'll report back if that makes a difference. There was one follow-up comment that it didn't make a difference in the stock ROM (edit - ahh... from broprah... any update to that?).
FWIW, I have been noticing this issue a lot BUT I only get it when streaming to my BT earbuds (with HTC Music, Google Play Music, and Pocket Casts). This stuttering does not happen when I use wired earbuds or playing over BT in my car. I understand the scenarios are different for everyone, but that's my own situation.

I ended up flashing Viper and I haven't experienced any stuttering since. In poking around, I see that changing the read ahead in the built in system tools only changes the internal read ahead. Further poking revealed that the external read ahead is preset to 4096kb, which could be the solution in the end.

I don't see a differentiation in Trickster. Do you know if that's just a Viper setting?
I was using FauxTool to check and change settings, regardless of kernel.
No such luck with my read ahead change. :/

Google Music issues (I THINK this is a One issue)

I remember reading a while back that Google Music had added gapless playback support, but it's not working for me (either on my phone or computer, actually). All the digging I've done says if you enable the equalizer it will be fixed, but I can't figure out how to do that at all. Can anyone tell me?
Reference:

It's also started playing music when it connects to my car stereo much less reliably. I used to get in and a few seconds later I was streaming music. Now, BT connects and a lot of the time it never plays a song at all, other times it will automatically take one but take as long as 5 minutes, and occasionally it will immediately start playing. What's going on here and how do I make it work the way it should?

Bluetooth headphone streams dropping but not disconnecting while using Netfiix

I have the most bizarre issue.
I have only noticed this while watching something on Netflix, basically I'm watching a video, doesn't matter which through my bluetooth headphones and after about 4 minutes or so the audio stops streaming through the headphones and begins to play through the phone's internal speakers.
I check the status of bluetooth at the time and it says my headphones are still connected, also I would normally hear a message while wearing them to say the phone has been disconnected if that was the case. Now nothing plays through the bluetooth headset not even the system music app and the only way I can get it working again is to switch bluetooth off and on again.
I have tried uninstalling and re installing Netflix
I have tried re-pairing the headphones, I still get the same issues.
If I don't use Netflix at all and just the music app I get no dropouts.
I have only noticed this since the last update to marshmellow and not pointing fingers in that direction but it's just around that time it started playing up.

I'm trying to avoid a factory reset if possible, do any of you guys here have alternative suggestions?

Sound pausing over Bluetooth.

When playing music or video through Bluetooth, it keeps dropping out for a few seconds and coming back. The music track or video doesn't stop playing, merely the sound. I don't remember this problem when I first used the device. I have had this for less than a week. I imagine it has something to do with the background handling of processes but I can't seem to solve this problem. Any suggestions?

Same problem for me MHA-L29 376, C432, Oreo 8.0.0. However when transmitting sound to BT audio adapter, there are no pauses, but when listening with Bluetooth headphones, there are nasty sound pauses - audio track is not stopping, just 1-2 sec periods of no sound. Really annoying. I am thinking about doing factory reset. Maybe you have tried it?

I have not tried a factory reset. I am on the latest update for oreo on the same model as yours. I have tried clearing the Bluetooth cache and that of the apps I'm having trouble with. Since it happens with both YouTube and Spotify, I'm inclined to believe they are not the source of the problem. I can't remember if it did this before I updated. My next step is going to try a custom ROM, most likely the now unsupported but latest version of LineageOS, Android 9. Hopefully this is a ROM bug and not a firmware or hardware issue.
I also have issue with it when connecting to my car receiver automatically. I have to press the band key on the receiver to get it to connect, and it occasionally stops when I'm multi-tasking while music is playing. It's just buggy compared to my old OnePlus One.
