[Q] Black screen and wallpaper pop-in when exiting apps to the homescreen - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This issue is a little hard to explain in greater detail than the title states. Happens quite a lot lately when closing an app. Basically after exiting to the homescreen via the home button I'm faced with a second or so of a black screen then the wallpaper and app icons just pop onscreen. Very annoying. Does anyone here know why this may be happening or what possibly might be causing it? I'm rooted pretty much stock with the Franco Kernel and xposed and only a few xposed modules.

Can you post a screen recording?

Stock home-launcher? Or custom one? If so it might be custom home launcher issue,or maybe xposed module issue.

Is it a launcher redraw, like what happens when the phone is out of memory? Or is what you described something else?

It's actually Nova Launcher. Do you think a launcher can cause something along the lines I (tried to) described?

I guess that sounds about right. Just now went in to Nova's advanced menu and an option was there for aggressive desktop which did mention about redraws and such. I checked it so I'll have to play around a bit to see if it'll make a difference. Thanks for mentioning it.

I've seen the same thing after playing a game on stock. Think it is the aggressive memory management in 4.4

Go Launcher EX - WiFi Related Lag?

So I've noticed with Go Launcher EX that with WiFi turned off or with it on but no connection that scrolling through the home screens and app drawer is laggy and stutters. Once WiFi is connected this are very smooth. This happens with the stock ROM and CM7. Has anyone else noticed this and/or have any suggestions on fixing it?
Edit: Moving the minimum clock speed up to 600MHz with SetCPU takes care of the lag but I'm sure I'll burn through the battery a little faster.
I haven't noticed anything like that, are you on the stock ROM or something else?
I still use the default Kindle Launcher, so it is a bit laggy when I launch Go Launcher EX and it isn't in memory.

It did it with the stock ROM and now does it with CM7.
Silly question, but do you have issues w/ home screen redraws as well, or no? If so, it still sounds like a loading thing. If not, that is strange. Maybe it has a few built in widgets that are getting upset about not having access to the outside world?

[Q] Random app pops up after back-button exit

Hi,
Searched the internet but could only find one other writing about the exact same issue that I have.
Has any of you experienced the same? I happens quite often unfortunately...
Quote from this Google forum:
I have a habit of using "Back" button to "exit" from Android applications back to the launcher. Recently, I started noticing a rather peculiar and intermittent behavior associated with "Back" button. Consider the following scenario:
I launch my Out of Milk app using a icon on my launcher screen. The app starts successfully. I do what I wanted to do. And then I hit the "Back" button in order to return back to the launcher screen. The Out of Milk GUI disappears, but it is immediately replaced with Google Earth app splash screen. It is displayed for a very short time (a split second). Then it disappears and I finally return to the launcher screen.
Some other time I launch RealCalc app, do what I wanted to do, and hit the "Back" button. For a split second I get thrown to Contacts app for and only then I return to the launcher.
This seems to happen with all apps. Sometimes, when I hit the "Back" button I even get to see glimpses of two apps instead of one, in sequence, each for the very same short period of time. This behavior is very intermittent. In many cases the "Back" button works as it is supposed to, i.e. it returns me to the launcher screen immediately.
So, what is causing this strange "flashback" behavior?

Happens to me too, but rarely.
I have set Nova Launcher to default, how is this related?
I use nova too, but don't have any other launchers installed

Yeah, even I face this thing at times. I can confirm this happens on Nova Prime as well as Aviate.

well, if you don't have any launcher set to default, you can kill it and when you click on back button it goes to random app, but you have the default launcher set, so this is not the problem in your case.
P.S.: I also have Nova Launcher and don't have this problem, so the problem must be somewhere else.

That's really weird. Do you use any custom ROM/kernel? Do you have Xposed Framework installed? Is your phone rooted?
same thing has been happening to me for a while on probably 5 different roms and I always use the GEL launcher. I cannot for the life of me figure out why it does it.

Stock ROM with Franco kernel. But I think it also happened on Faux kernel, but not 100% sure.
I also just disabled Xposed Framework to be able to run on ART, which didn't change it.

It just don't make sense to me. I am also using Franco kernel, but not with stock ROM. I also have GEL and Nova Launcher installed. I have run out of ideas.
same here, quite annoying, 4.4.2 stock and franco r34
I find this happens when a [bad] app crashes. I can't remember which app I had problems with but until I uninstalled it every time I used the back button to leave it I'd wind up in another app, usually one I had not used in a while.
happened here too... stock launcher, stock kernel, gravity box installed, rooted... about the only changes i've made.
Just a kitkat glitch probably

This same issue happens to me as well, not too often but it does occur. The apps that mostly come up for me are the dialer and gmail. Im running SlimKat 4.4.2 Build 3.6 with Nova Prime set as the default launcher and I actually started experiencing it after seeing several people who brought it up in the SlimKat thread. However, from what all i have read, seen, and been told about it though, it has been happening to people on all different KitKat roms both custom and stock and not just any one thing in particular. Like another person said, i too believe it is just a KitKat bug in general and not something specific as to any one single thing that could be causing it. I would guess that it will be fixed eventually being that many people have been experiencing it and not just a few.

I'm also having this issue. Stock rom/kernel and rooted. Caught it on screen record. Excuse the background noise. Didn't realise it was recording sound. http://youtu.be/sOxzuiFv3xQ
Glad I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. Also sometimes when I'm exiting to the homescreen my icons and widgets take a split second to appear.
The same thing happened on my Skyrocket running 4.4.2 before it kicked the bucket. Figured it was due to running a custom rom but now it's happening on my mostly stock N5.

This is unrelated, it is just redrawing your homescreen.
Haven't had this issue. Are you guys tapping the back button quickly and repeatedly?

[Q] Launcher takes about a second to redraw every time I exit Chrome only... why?

So basically, only when I'm in the Chrome app (not the beta, just stock chrome), when I hit the home button and come to my home screen, it's blank for a second or two, and then my apps / folders pop up. This shouldn't happen and hasn't happened to me until recently. It's almost as if i'm using too much RAM, but i know for sure I'm not as I've tested it with chrome being the only app even running. I don't think chrome is leaking 2 gb of ram...
Some info- this is on my nexus 5, rooted but stock rom with xposed. No xposed modules related to chrome, chrome is not greenified or anything, so i'm not sure where the problem is. I've reset all the default on ://chrome/flags so i'm not allowing it to use too much RAM. Can anyone think of why this is happening? I can provide more info if needed, just ask.

first things first. xposed comes with a countless amount of undocumented issues. before doing anything else to try and fix your issue, get rid of xposed, completely. if that doesnt fix your issue, we will try other things. if you dont try removing xposed. then theres no point to try anything else.

Simms is right. What I would recommend personally is having MultiROM installed and having one ROM on ART without exposed and another ROM with every XPosed module known to man and several species of Monkey. ?
Over time your device may seem fine but XPosed starts slowly corrupting the integrity of the ROM have no idea how. You'll get random force closes, weird audio bugs, force reboots, screen of deaths, and random lag spikes from my experience. You'll run every cleaner in the book, you'll clear cache and dalvik cache and fix permissions but it won't help. You've been struck by a smooth criminal, ahem. XPosed.

Lag when swiping away recent apps

I'm running Lollipop 5.1.1 and whenever I swipe away recent apps in the task switcher such as Chrome or Play Store, there is a lag/stutter before the app leaves the screen. It swipes away and then pauses for a second before leaving. Is there any way to fix this.

Well, this might be from you having a lot of apps opened at the same time.
When was the last time you flashed a ROM?

I flashed a ROM a couple of days ago - the latest Cataclysm. It was occurring even before that and even happens when I clean flash any ROM and kernel combination. It also happens if I have only one app in recent apps.

I have xposed and maybe 20 apps but if it even happens on a clean install, then it doesn't really matter. Maybe it's just time for a new phone. Here's a link to a similar post where people concluded it was just normal.

It's weird as it doesn't happen on my N4, so it's not the hardware's fault. Maybe it's a Lollipop bug. Android M is gonna come out soon, so maybe that will fix it.

It doesn't happen on my Nexus 7 2013 either which is weird.
I thought bumping this thread would be better than starting a new one. Here's a video I found showing the lag on Youtube. The lag occurs on the last app when he's swiping away Chrome.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9P4m_B4uAQ
Happens on my moto g 3 too.. It's so so annoying.. :/
Happens to me to, nexus 5 stock, started happening with android 5 or 5.0.1, still happening with android 6. doesn't matter how many apps I'm swiping away, I can have only 2 apps in the recent apps list, the last one will always have a small lag when swiping away.

Question Icons in folders on home screen are getting rearranged.

This problem has been going on for about a week. I have 5 folders on my home screen and the apps in one folder keep getting rearranged. I'll fix it and then after a few hours if changes again.
Additionally the bottom part of the homescreen with the default apps (these aren't in a folder) gets rearranged too.
Not sure why this is happening. Has anyone encountered this? Is there a fix for this?
Thanks!
I just reported a similar problem with the default icons rearranging themselves at the bottom of the home screen to Samsung support. This is despite the fact that I have the Home Screen layout locked in Settings. I thought that it might have something to do with the use of the Good Lock Home Screen app. Are you using this app too by any chance?
Did you lock home screen layout?
The only way the folder content should alter if this is enabled is if you package block an app in that folder.
Clear system cache.
Yes, I have my home screen locked. I have several folders on my home screen, but I haven’t noticed if the icons in these folders are also getting rearranged. Are you using the Good Lock Home Up app? I read somewhere that this can cause this problem with icon arrangement.

I have a lot of things blocked, can't for the life of me think of which one it is haha. I'll check with the locked homescreen and see if that works, if not I'll have to turn on each thing one by one, and test, which will take forever because its' totally random when it gets rearranged.

Starting with Android 10 Samsung added dozens, maybe a hundred or more small system apks to modify that wretched OS's behavior so One UI be functional as before.
I have two N10+'s, one running on 9, the other 10.
My package disable list for the 10 version is nearly identical to the 9 in spite nearly having 100 more new Samsung system apps. I ignored these new system apks as they don't seem to impact performance. Most likely are needed.
I recommend not touching these as erratic behavior may occur.
Sound familiar?
Go after apps that are known to cause trouble ie excess battery/internet usage and leave the rest alone. Dependencies... some are obvious, some maybe not so much so. Take a more cautious approach.
Many of the Samsung system apps just sit there and do nothing unless needed.

Not sure, I'll have to wait and see. As I said, it's totally random and sometimes only changes after 24 hours. I'll report back. Naw, doesn't happen when I close and reopen the folder. Seemingly random. It was originally the folder, now it's those default apps on the bottom of the homescreen.

You might be able to get some clues using Device Care>memory and seeing what apps just cache when it happens.
Or see if clearing it has any effect. Then see what apps pop up. You get the idea.
If you got more than 100 packages disabled you might want to rethink it down to about 80 or so.
Only ones you know aren't needed.
Thanks man, looks like the problem has bene resolved with a screen lock. I will take a look into your suggestions though, as I've never had to lock the screen before to prevent apps from reorganizing themselves within a folder or a dock.

Yeah that's not anything I ever saw before except with busy pocket syndrome.
Probably a setting (maybe a new one), 3rd party app or shiny new Samsung bug.
I recall that bug being caused by changing the recents settings in the homeup module. I think it was caused by one of the recents list options. I read it but can't confirm because I use Nova launcher

Found the issue.
Apparently if you use vertical apps list setting for the app drawer this issue arises.
I only switched back to one UI because of this though.
Hopefully Samsung fixes this.
I was using an love Nova launcher but didn't want the additional battery drain of one UI which has to run. Sigh, fix your bugs samsung.

It's truly not that much battery drain. Using galaxy maxhz to adjust refresh rates for situations that you don't need higher refresh rates I still average around 8.5hrs SOT at QHD.
