Informations about gps apps - General Topics

Hello there! This is the first time I write in the forum, but I've been following it since 2 years by now (or even more, actually!). I'm "relatively" new, so I hope I'm writing in the right section.
I'm working hard to be a developer and recently I've been contacted by private people to make a new gps app. I've never worked with these kind of stuff, so grabbing gps signals, transform it to show on a map your postition etc. I'm a complitely noob on this side. So, I would ask to whom is more experienced than me some informations about how to handle these stuff, if there's some guide that shows how gps services (on Android, of course) works to catch the signal and send the informations to the app and so on, some good article and stuff like this.
Thanks for the eventual help .

When I slide out the keyboard and type the lights go out on the keyboard within a second or two of a pause. Is there any way to make the lights stay on longer ??
I know your happy about your new wizard. But its enough with the questions.
Use the search function, like everyone elese.
About the keyboard let me say it is possible, do a search
Thanks for your kindness Weezy; I do not know about you but My job keeps me very busy, you know-job? Weezy? I have limited time to play here and I looked for a wile but thought that's what this forum was about- to ask for help. How do you know how much time I spent looking any way? It's possible I missed the answer to my question, then what-? Not everyone may have the time you have decided what is propper to search here first before asking questions. I hung out on Treo forums for 18 months and saw tons of others and myself ask many questions and never saw any one told to stop with the questions. I do not like you to much Weezy, you have taken a very fun experience for me and others in my office who are keeping up on this with me and have tryed to turn us all off about this forum and our new 8125's. Three of us bought them but only I am doing the research for us all. I could have all the others ask questions to, would that make you happy? Sorry to the others about being gruff but I thought we all had a common bond to share here. I'm not going to stop asking questions. I do not like being pushed around.
I own my business so I have to sit down and get on the computer when there aren't any customers I need to take care of.
And what your doing is breaking the FIRST rule of the forum. Let me make it faster for you, and paste it here for you.
1. Check if something hasn't been asked before
Some questions just keep popping up over and over. Please use the 'search' function in the menu above each and every page in the forum. Try entering a few keywords to see if your question has been asked before. If it has, please read the topics and see if you can figure it our from there.
(We acknowledge that part of the problem is that we never created a well-organized system of FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) documents. But then we're doing lots of cutting-edge stuff, and we'd rather build cool tools than work on perfecting FAQs.)

Talk about waste of bandwidth, weezy you are a waste. I guess 41 posts make you the big man here. I sure hope you have no interests in this web site or I would never have donated money. You are clearly wrong and to rebut as you did instead of offering help shows your integrity and willingness to help. It seems you are trying to be big man on campus, maybe in hopes to get some ware. That is not the way to do it so grow up. So when it comes to me and my posts let those that I give my money to tell me what to do here not you. As we tell people at work that try to have a say ware they do not belong" you do not sign my pay check". So weezy mind your own business.
You can get tempermental huh. I been here before you heard of Windows Mobile. It just that I switched to Treo because I was dealing with Palms at the time. I was just like you and doubted the search button. I didnt post the first I signed up here. Hey, if I didn't tell you about the search button, so one else would.
Hope you get your keyboard working
Hint, its with include in your search keyword : registry
zac123- have you found fix for key light timing - have a refurb 8125 for month and have same issue - pain in neck on train to work at 5am - have many questions and find no answers, need to post when have more time - have done extensive search on this site and others and find no fix - attempts to call phone mfgr from number given to me from my service provider are waste of time, calls go to S.Africa and have constant disconnects - keep up good work with questions, they bring out the insane and every site needs a good laugh - ask many questions and do not let the insane bother you, just laugh - need to register with pay pal when have time, want to donate - please reply
It right there in the wiki

HKCU\ControlPanel\Backlight\QKeyLedTimeout = 30 (DWORD decimal)
(This key only works on Wizard and Universal)
if you'd used the time to UTFS instead of flaming on weezy correcting your ignorance of forum ettiquete, you would have found the question had been asked dozens of times, but anyways, it won't work:
Change the keyboard backlight duration
To change the duration of the keyboard backlight, you can set (example is 30 seconds):
HKCU\ControlPanel\Backlight\QKeyLedTimeout = 30 (DWORD decimal)
Please note that this may not work on some devices. One such notable exception is the HTC Wizard.

I don't think it work on the 1.8 rom, what rom are you using? And Thank You Marcski
Weezy you are pretty smart, you new just ware to go with this. Zac123 should listen to you. I'm sorry about my post to zac123 about insane people. I wish i would have come back sooner to try your fix out. I been working on this for a month now, I will do it now. I alrady have PHM reg edit installed, this wll be easy. I chose New DWORD Value / value name I made QKeyLedTimeout and value I set to 30 and chose OK. Then it showes up under name as QKeyLedTimeout and under Data as 30(0x00001e) Unfortunately this did not fix the issue. i see that Marcski says it wont work, you guys are pretty smart. I guess it is time to give up. O well.... Maybe I will keep pestering cingular instead of you guys. Thanks any way weezy and Marcski.
Thanks, but I didn't find this registry edit. I remeber I used a cleaned rom, and it work, but I haven't applied the hack since I upgraded to the official 2.6 rom
I have a wizard with the 2.26 Molski ROM, but on earlier versions it didn't work either..
Thanks marcski, I made my self known at My service provider with this issue. We have a very large corporation that uses them so I have my corporate tek support rep checking for a firmware upgrade or something to fix this problem.I'm going to search here more now for a firmware upgrade, I read someware else there is an unofficial release of one. I hope I can find it, there is so much on this site and I have trouble with the search engine.
here's a hint to a good rom, its by molski.
Here's the link
http://www.molski.biz/
Or just go the Wizard Update forum, plenty of roms for the wizard and 8125. Search for mr clean rom to, its pretty.
I myself use the official t-mo rom 2.6
You can update the rom and do a hard reset, and when it get to the part where it say's "install customization" press the reset button on the side, and it won't install those ugly carrier customization

It's been a wile since my last post but i want to have some info so I could contribute something to this web site. I have researched extensively the keyboard light timing issue with the 8125 and I do not have good news. I have some phone numbers here that any one may use to call and check on there own about the info I am posting. I was on the phone for 65 minuts with a few different tech support agents wile they tested there own 8125's and researched the issue. They all said the light timing is controlled by a capassitor that once fired has a discharge rate of it's own that can no be controled by any firmware upgrade or registery entry. They said this then is a hardware issue therefore it ca not be addressed. These are the phone numbers; 713-774-7888 is for the main offices and 877-878-6944 was for opperational questions and 888-354-2375 was for repair and technical support. The last # was ware I got all this info today. So now I am going to put this issue to rest and just get used to the phone the way it is. I have been customizing it with different software, such as Handy Switcher- PocketPC Batter Monitor- Phm Registery Editor- IM-Pluss- SPB-Backup and WiFiFOFum wi-fi sniffer. I find all these programs very helpful, some I have already purchased and some I am waiting for another pay day. My next two projects are to find out why the first Hot Sync never works and comes up with an error making me unplug the phone and start over, then it syncs up fine. Then I need to find some king of Java application to install that will allow me to watch my live traffic cams like I did on my Treo 650. This has all been fun work so far.

Co-Ordinates Application

Hi All,
Thought i'd ask for help instead of just replying
I have a casio FX-795P personal computer (showing my age here.....) and of course this machine uses BASIC (those were the days.. haha). I have written a couple of short programs that help me in my day job to work out co-ordinates, bearings & distances (im a site engineer). Whilst the casio does a great job of this, i would like a programme on my Touch Cruise to save having to carry two devices round.
Does anyone know of a a free app that does this? Or could someone write one? I can pm anyone with the BASIC programme to help and of course i will test & donate
Many thanks to XDA!!
How exactly do you calculate the distances? i might be able to send you a link to something of that sort..
but please explain EXACTLY what you need

Hi nir36
Thanks for the reply and excuse me for not explaining myself in too much detail at the start. The app can work both ways:
1/ It is possible to work out co-ords for unknown point B, from known A co-ords and the known bearing and distance using a simple equation.
2/ and obviously working out the unknown bearing and distance from known co-ords from point a & b.
ideally the app should also have a section for simple pythag; a2+b2=c2.
The app would have an initial screen with 3 choices:
1. New Co-ords (as 1/ above)
2. Distance & Bearing (as 2/ above)
3. Pythag
Hitting any of 1,2 or 3 above would then take you to a seperate screen where you would input the known data to which the result is then given.
If you are interested I will add the BASIC programs to this thread for your interpratation. I would be very interested in how to get started for writing simple apps for WM devices, as i have many ideas..... Dummies guide
Thanks for your interest.
unfortunatly i'm not a developer.. but i do implement PDA packs for facilities..
i'm not familiar with anything that does that.
that is, of course you can compute distances between 2 sets of coords using a simple GPS app like iGO.. but i realize that's not the point.
there's an app called GPSToday which can get 2 sets of coords on a virtual map and tell you the distance between them.. but i'm not sure if it requires a GPS or not.. you can check it out, it's free.
concerning pythag.. i haven't the slightest clue if there's something out there that does that.
i have one suggestion tho, if you're willing to pay for such an app considering it doesn't require much coding (as i see it),
open a new thread in the Development & Hacking offering a sum of money for developers to develop this app for you.
there are many developers here and i'm sure some of them are looking for cash
cheers.
Nir36,
Thanks for the advice, i will post a thread there. My idea would not need the use of GPS as the results are from simple set equations that just need a couple of variables inputted to get the result.
Yes you are correct in saying the coding would not be involved as i have written it in basic and it would just need a little development to bring it on.
Cheers Nir36.

Samsung Galaxy S Plus GT-i9001 - BroodRom RC4 Wifi problems

If you're experiencing WiFi drop problems, may I suggest you have a look at application: "FXR WiFi fix and rescue", available on Play Store and free, no root required btw. It solved my problem at least.
Hi there,
as a new user on XDA-Developers I am not allowed to post in the development forums (yet)! Grrrr!
Anyway I would like to share interesting discovery about an application that has been able to fix (for me at least) the WiFi problem that's quite extensively discussed on the "Galaxy S Plus I9001 Android Development" thread, started by all-glorious-and-deserving BroodROM author: Broodplank1337.
As many users on that thread I've been experiencing the problem about WiFi connection lasting a few seconds to a few minutes, and then dropping. The only cure to this problem was to deactivate WiFi, then reactivate it. I sometimes had to retry up to 2-3 times for the WiFi connection to work again, but only for a few dozens of seconds / few minutes.
-> the application that fixed my problem is "FXR WiFi fix and rescue". I tried a few other but only that one solved the problem for me. I was surprised that it didn't even request root access rights...
On the aforementioned forum I could find several other fixes made by Broodplank and others, involving reflashing of Kernel and/or modem firmware. I didn't want to start flashing the Kernel again on the cellphone as some users had reported failure and I didn't want to risk bricking the phone.
Hope this info is useful and gets found by some people (I wished I could post it as a reply to the aforementioned thread, would have allowed a more concise answer, grrrr).
Hey,
Thank you very much for pointing out this app, If it really helps I will definitely add it to RC5. of course I'm very curious what the app does since it doesn't even need root access.
Tested the app and It seems to really fix the reception! I have 2 bars now on the 2nd floor and normally i would have 0 bars! (so it keeps disconnecting all the time)
Thank you very much!
Great!
Great!
You know what, if it was 8 years ago I would be like you, releasing custom ROMs etc or doing similar stuff. However in the meantime came wife and children... I don't have no time at all for hacking at home anymore!
On the professional side I'm doing similar job, only that it's not on smartphones (it's in digital TV market). I have good embedded Linux experience including bootloader stuff etc, but rather poor Android-specific knowledge (at the moment).
So there you have it: your devoted new user cyclistefou is an experienced professional embedded Linux hacker, thankful and admirative for your efforts on broodrom, wishing to help and certainly able to regarding knowledge, but having almost NO time at all. Today I'm doing a special effort to contact you as you deserve it with so much work in BroodROM.
-> in summary, please remember me, as a guy who has no time in general but still wishing to support and help... when I get post access to dev forums it will be easier for me to post useful info when I have it...
Thanks for your efforts. Too bad the SGS+ device HW is good but IMHO the SW is terrible. If there was not BroodROM I would be back to my trusty HTC Desire in no time!
Wifi disconnection issue solution.!!
i khow this problem. Thats the bug in the new firmware. But there is a solution. In your wifi router there is lan setting option where ull find Lease Time. Set it to two weeks. Lease was set to "forever" actually, I changed it to one day, rebooted both and now it seems to work fine, I've tried downloading bigger files and playing some games online, it didn't drop at all! I twill not disconnect again.
Thanks for your answers, hopefully it'll stay like this...

[Completed] [Q] Android Installed Security Certificates and System Installed Apps

Does a comprehensive and plain english list exist anywhere that tells who is who and why they have a security certificate installed on my android phone?
I've asked this before and never found an answer. I find it odd that it isn't questioned and recently when installing FoxFi, it was made more poignant when many became up in arms about the FoxFi cert and the notification that some unknown entity could be monitioring activity. FoxFi is pretty clear about why that cert is there and I can't say that for the factory installed ~200 certs.
Also, is there a comprehensive list anywhere that tells what factory installed and system apps do? Many have very obscure names and even names which are quite misleading upon actually discovering what they really do. I'm sure I can't be the only one that would like to know exactly which apps are safe to freeze, disable or uninstall and upon doing so, what functionality will be lost or what other apps will no longer work, if any.
I think Google needs to step things up in these two areas so people can actually know. The work in the area of app permissions is a step in that direction, but, still a long way from full and forthright disclosure aimed at educating all android device owners.
Thanks for any direction you can provide.
Hmmmmm.... its merely about the desire to know why every android I've owned for coming on ten years now has security certs installed belonging to the DOD, Japanese Government, Experia, Equifax and many more that I have no idea who they are unless I want to research each and everyone of them. Even doing so in most cases still doesn't reveal why those entities have a cert on my phone and what it actually means. I wonder what happens if they are removed and why they are there in the first place.
As far as the many pre-installed apps that I can't imagine many people having a clue as to why they are installed or what they actually do, well, that kinda speaks for itself as well.
Nobody else wonders or does everyone else but me already know?
However, in the mean time, I'll refine my quest to changing permissions and any insightful threads on that for dummies would be appreciated.
Thanks

[Completed] Why does this Forum website make me suicidal and/or murderous with its complexity?

I consider myself a rational intelligent man but I find this site insanely complex, non-intuitive,an extremely frustrating! After sleepless hours and hours and hours and hours of trying to familiarise myself with this place, this 64 year old man is sitting here in tears trying to find his last post among other simple tasks attempted. Does there not exist here, a simple starting tutorial to introduce one to the basic workings of this place? Please help.
My problems partially solved.
My problems partially solved ...
I FINALLY found a downloadable and functional apk for this forum's app (Google Play store will not play with my device at present ... That is one of the reasons that I am here) ... and that is helping me a LOT!
Perhaps it would be a good idea for you to make it a point to strongly recommend the XDA forums app to newly arriving members here.
I TRULY think that the website UI here could use some development to make it much more new-user-friendly, however.
... Another point ...
Maybe I am missing some kind of search filtering option, but, I do not see any value in hundreds of thousands of non-applicable and irrelevant search results when trying to find something here. Perhaps someone could direct me to such filtering options if they do, indeed, exist.
In closing, I must say that the reception I received when joining here was very pleasant and I am already on my way via some help
and advice from a couple of members here to solve my crashed Play Store problem.

I personally find hundreds of thousands of non applicable and irrelevant search results on very specifically searched items very very very unhelpful...

You should be able to see all your previous posts in your profile and link to the thread there. Xda is confusing unless you know what u want from it. For me if i have a question i just pop it in xda search bar and relevant threads pop up. But if u want to learn everything then u have to come up with a specific thing first theres not really a guide to it all. But u should be able to find almost anything with the right search. If not post question in a help or q&a thread. I will help just let me know what u r looking for

I simply HAD to tether to my PC as I simply CANNOT function on this site via my smartphone ... it is HORRENDOUS. I can't even figure out how to THANK people hardly or reply to their help ...
DAYAM ... what takes seconds here takes HOURS there ... SO MANY BUGS ... photo verification of reply to prove I am not a robot half way off the farking page ... and MANY MANY other concerns.
The help is great but the UI is SO unfriendly !
Anyways ... thank you for your responses and I will be much less tense now that I am on my PC
No I know how to tether ... but I have not been bothering even when at home. I have been so stupid til now. I was just emphasizing how much easier it is to communicate with this site from a large computer, monitor and keyboard is all.
Thanks tho
