[Q] root Nexus 5 without wiping data - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i recently tried to root my Nexus 5 16 GB, but only managed to unlock the boot loader. If I try to root again using the CF auto root, would it still wipe all data? I'm new at this, and it was my first attempt at rooting.

If you have unlocker bootloader, just flash a custom recovery via fastboot, then flash supersu.zip in recovery and you're done

i think u have to unlock bootloader that will wipe ur data before root

Sorry, not possible bro. For rooting you need to unlock the bootloader and that WILL wipe your data. No choice.

Ever tried making an omelet without breaking the eggs?

If you already unlocked your bootloader (so if you get a wipe of all your data last time). You can now root wihout loosing any data with CF auto-root, as only the unlocking bootloader step can wipe data in that process.
If you want to check if your bootloader is unlocked, reboot your nexus 5. If you see the small unlock icon at the botom of the "Google" logo, then, your bootloader is unlocked

Backup with helium before your wipe and should be good

Why didnt you notice that he already said his bootloader is unlocked.

Yea seriously guyz he has already said that bootloader is unlocked.
And as per his ques no since the bootloader is already unlocked cf auto will only root so your data won't wipe.

Suppose it took me by surprise. Basics covered in sticky thread should be read. Root doesn't wipe so wasn't expecting a question that's already covered

How do I root my nexus s 4g? I already have an unlocked bootloader.

Hey
I unlocked the boatloader, which wiped the phone, and rooted it when I first got it.
I got the new update recently and just found out I lost root. Is there a way to get root back without wiping the phone? I still have the unlocked bootloader since I have the little lock on the boot screen.
I read the guides, but they all seem to also do the fastboot thing that unlocks the bootloader or installs a new ROM. I just want to keep my phone the way it is (stock) and root it. I'm just really confused about how to do it.
Thanks!
Mount USB while in Android
Copy su.zip
Boot into cwm recovery
Install su.zip from sdcard
Done

I don't have unlocked anything. I'd like a rooted phone without having to wipe anything. Is it possible?
If the bootloader isn't unlocked then doing so will wipe.
If it's unlocked installing su and recovery as I described will wipe nothing.

Ok. And I suppose you cannot root a phone without unlocking the bootloader first?

Just wanted my bootloader unlocked but I got root too. Anyway to remove root?

Just used the CF-Auto-Root and everything went smoothly. However, I only wanted my bootloader unlocked so I wouldn't have to wipe my device down the line but do not plan on using the root capabilities right now. Is there anyway to unroot the device while still maintaining the unlocked bootloader? Thanks.
Why didn't you just unlock the boot loader? Why did you use auto root knowing it would root it?

Honestly I just went through this reddit post about unlocking the bootloader. It did not mention anything about it rooting the device. I guess I should have realized it would have root when using "Auto-Root"...
So far I've unchecked the root option in SuperSU and have disabled the app. Wondering if there was a way to fully remove root access and SuperSU.
just flash the stock images back on using fastboot

There is an unroot feature in SuperSu app. Simple.

There's no way to root N5 without wiping at present?

I searched a lot in the past few hours for rooting my N5 & N10 in 4.4. Then finally I rooted N10 via Nexus Root Toolkit without wiping, just booted into that TWRP Recovery and installed SuperSU 1.8. But when I tried the same way to root N5, the Recovery only showed no command. So did I miss the actual method?
Thanks for anyone could answer my question.
You have to unlock the bootloader to root. That'll wipe the device. The actual rooting doesn'tt wipe it.
Edit, follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47025283
It seems that unlocking bootloader is necessary. However, I am curious to know why Nexus 10 could skip unlocking step.
And thank you for sharing, I'll read it this morning.

Flashing PA with locked bootloader?

Good morning!
So, yesterday evening I rooted my N5 with Towelroot, installed TWRP and then flashed the latest SuperSU! Everything went fine and now I want to install PA (4.4 RC1). But I'm not quite sure if I need to unlock the bootloader for that... I think that only needs to be done for a kernel. So what should I do? Leave it locked and flash PA, or unlock it and flash PA?
Also, if someone could set me up with the 4.4.3 gapps, that would be nice. I downloaded a file, but its not a mini version and only has 97MB. The full versions are a lot bigger if I remember correctly, aren't they?
Anyway thanks!
*edit: I'm currently on the 4.4.3 stock ROM. That means that I don't need to update my radio, because it should already be the latest version from the OTA... Correct me if In wrong though!

Please can you ensure you ask questions in the questions section ?
The bootloader only needs to be unlocked to flash recovery which you need for rooting. This isn't an issue for you because you used the new exploit that means you can root without having to unlock the bootloader
Even though you've rooted already, I strongly urge you to read the pre root section in the thread shown in my signature to bump up your basic knowledge

I do have basic knowledge (rooted my Nexus Phones before, every time with fastboot). I'm just asking if it is important to unlock the hootloader before flashing a ROM, as I'm not sure. Sorry for posting in the false section...

You can install custom ROMs, but only ROMs based on stock firmware and using stock kernel. ROMs like CyanogenMod, you can't install at all because you cannot flash the custom kernel that comes with it. Unlocked bootloader allows you to install unsigned kernels onto your phone.

Isn't that the case, or have I been misinformed? I left my boot loader unlocked since the day I was rooted, mostly because of that fact (I remembered reading it somewhere) and also because I can't do a RMA.

You unlock the bootloader to flash a custom recovery. You flash kernels/ROMs in a custom recovery, not in bootloader.
Also this thread is in the wrong section.
So, if I just unlock my bootloader with bootunlock I won't have any problems?

That was where I was getting at, since I learnt to root using the manual way and not using a toolkit, I had to unlock my bootloader first before flashing a custom recovery. Never occurred to me to relock it.
(if I made a mistake somewhere, I apologized. I'm still learning, and learnt something new today!)

You can flash a kernel/ROM in a custom recovery regardless bootloader state, but the bootloader needs to be unlocked to use fastboot (i.e. flash the custom recovery in the first place). A bunch of people relock their bootloader with an app (and unlock when necessary, doesn't delete internal storage through this method) for extra security (internal storage wipes if bootloader is unlocked via fastboot).

Root and recovery 5.1

Im getting a used N5 this week its already factory unlocked reset and Tmo and on 5.1. My question is in order to root and recovery do i just do the nexus toolkit backup N5 for 5.1 and unlock bootloader then root and recovery?

Why would you backup a second-handed n5 which you never used?
I know nothing about toolkits, but here is how I do if I am doing the whole thing from zero:
I download and install 15 secs inataller http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
I download google usb drivers http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
I download twrp http://dl.twrp.me/hammerhead/
I press and hold power+volume_down keys until my phone reboots to fastboot mode.
I comnect the phone.
I go to device manager and install the google usb drivers for the new unknown device.
I open CMD
I type fastboot oem unlock
Select yes on the phone
I restart the phone and let it boot up
I copy the latest supersu zip to the phone http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
I reboot it to fastboot mode again
I cd to that folder in the CMD window where the twrp recovery image is.
I start typing fastboot flash tw and press the tab key to fill the rest of the twrp filename
I reboot the phone to recovery
I flash the supersu zip
Can someone chime in on using NRT 5.1 root and recovery and unlock bootloader? The phone is running factory 5.1 no root or recovery or unlocked bootloader just unlocked phone

I have to agree with bitdomo. It's much better not use the tool kit as you'll learn more about your device and how to get out of trouble down the road. There's a very good tut in the general forum on how to unlock the bootloader and root,http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47025283. With that said nrt will work if that's what you want to do.
