Hey
I unlocked the boatloader, which wiped the phone, and rooted it when I first got it.
I got the new update recently and just found out I lost root. Is there a way to get root back without wiping the phone? I still have the unlocked bootloader since I have the little lock on the boot screen.
I read the guides, but they all seem to also do the fastboot thing that unlocks the bootloader or installs a new ROM. I just want to keep my phone the way it is (stock) and root it. I'm just really confused about how to do it.

I don't have unlocked anything. I'd like a rooted phone without having to wipe anything. Is it possible?
If the bootloader isn't unlocked then doing so will wipe.
If it's unlocked installing su and recovery as I described will wipe nothing.

Hi I have just recently unrooted my phone and back to stock with stock boothloader and recovery.
I did this because I am just patiently
Waiting for the ICS update.
My questing is...how do I lock the OEM on my phone? I know you could but I want to know how. And ....if I do that....WOULD IT WIPE MY PHONE?
I want to relock my OEM, but keep all my apps on my phone.
So again, if I lock my OEM, would it wipe my phone?

Locking doesn't wipe anything. Unlocking wipes.

You don't have to lock bootloader to recieve OTA updates, unlocked bootloader just allows you to flash something via fastboot (usually CWM). Just be unrooted and have stock recovery, as I do. This way you can always flash CWM, make a nandroid backup and flash someting else...without losing any data (you don't unlock bootloader).

Yea, why lock the bootloader? It doesn't need to be.
I thought locking the bootloader DID wipe. I guess I myself am mistaken too. (It would tell you though when you go to do it.).
Lastly, don't you think it's a little earlier to be going back to stock for the ICS update when it's not even announced as far as it being done and the phone; nor, is it announced of when the phone itself will be coming out. And, it won't be sometime till after that as well.
Just my opinion.
(You also didn't need to go unroot if you were stock rooted with no modifications).
Its just that I have lots of apps and I want to have them for when ICS comes out.
And....idk....I just figures if I am not rooted I might-as-well OEM lock just invade..if I might need to...for warenty

Nah your good on that... while it's rooted and awaiting the OTA... give your phone some Cyber air... over clock it with an app... install a better radio.. do something =]

Yes, you can be rooted, but you'll have to have stock recovery and you'll lose root with OTA update.

You don't need stock recovery. Stock recovery is not checked with an assert and is not patched, it is deleted and flashed using a full image. You can flash the OTA with CWM without any issues.
You will lose root in one of two scenarios with the OTAs, it recursively chmod's /system or formats /system (full update, not incremental). At this point all you need to do it flash the su binary again though to regain root access.

i rooted my s3, then i unlocked the bootloader. i still havent flashed anything but now when i reboot my phone i get the custom notification with the unlocked padlock. did i do something wrong or is this normal.
edit: i used a windows based program to root and i used twrp to flash the unlocked bootloader
I am waiting on a stable completely functioning rom before flashing.

Sounds like it's not unlocked if you still have the custom boot screen. What method did you use to unlock?
You are not unlocked. When your bootloader is unlocked that Samsung screen just flies by. No padlock no waiting.

My SGiii now does this when booting. I have root. I used the devFS root method. I to my knowledge I have not flashed the boot loader. Is this what people were talking about by adding one to there flash counter? If so I might as well flash cwm.
Is my warranty void now?

Has nothing to do with flash counter. It shows that software is modified and is caused by root. Unlocking the bootloader will get rid of lock. Warranty is void only if you don't revert to stock before return.
Just used the CF-Auto-Root and everything went smoothly. However, I only wanted my bootloader unlocked so I wouldn't have to wipe my device down the line but do not plan on using the root capabilities right now. Is there anyway to unroot the device while still maintaining the unlocked bootloader? Thanks.
Why didn't you just unlock the boot loader? Why did you use auto root knowing it would root it?

Honestly I just went through this reddit post about unlocking the bootloader. It did not mention anything about it rooting the device. I guess I should have realized it would have root when using "Auto-Root"...
So far I've unchecked the root option in SuperSU and have disabled the app. Wondering if there was a way to fully remove root access and SuperSU.

There is an unroot feature in SuperSu app. Simple.
Hi, i recently tried to root my Nexus 5 16 GB, but only managed to unlock the boot loader. If I try to root again using the CF auto root, would it still wipe all data? I'm new at this, and it was my first attempt at rooting.
If you have unlocker bootloader, just flash a custom recovery via fastboot, then flash supersu.zip in recovery and you're done

i think u have to unlock bootloader that will wipe ur data before root
Sorry, not possible bro. For rooting you need to unlock the bootloader and that WILL wipe your data. No choice.

If you already unlocked your bootloader (so if you get a wipe of all your data last time). You can now root wihout loosing any data with CF auto-root, as only the unlocking bootloader step can wipe data in that process.
If you want to check if your bootloader is unlocked, reboot your nexus 5. If you see the small unlock icon at the botom of the "Google" logo, then, your bootloader is unlocked
Backup with helium before your wipe and should be good

And as per his ques no since the bootloader is already unlocked cf auto will only root so your data won't wipe.

Im getting a used N5 this week its already factory unlocked reset and Tmo and on 5.1. My question is in order to root and recovery do i just do the nexus toolkit backup N5 for 5.1 and unlock bootloader then root and recovery?

Why would you backup a second-handed n5 which you never used?
I know nothing about toolkits, but here is how I do if I am doing the whole thing from zero:
I download and install 15 secs inataller http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
I download google usb drivers http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
I download twrp http://dl.twrp.me/hammerhead/
I press and hold power+volume_down keys until my phone reboots to fastboot mode.
I comnect the phone.
I go to device manager and install the google usb drivers for the new unknown device.
I open CMD
I type fastboot oem unlock
Select yes on the phone
I restart the phone and let it boot up
I copy the latest supersu zip to the phone http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
I reboot it to fastboot mode again
I cd to that folder in the CMD window where the twrp recovery image is.
I start typing fastboot flash tw and press the tab key to fill the rest of the twrp filename
I reboot the phone to recovery
I flash the supersu zip
Can someone chime in on using NRT 5.1 root and recovery and unlock bootloader? The phone is running factory 5.1 no root or recovery or unlocked bootloader just unlocked phone

I have to agree with bitdomo. It's much better not use the tool kit as you'll learn more about your device and how to get out of trouble down the road. There's a very good tut in the general forum on how to unlock the bootloader and root,http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47025283. With that said nrt will work if that's what you want to do.

Well im use to using NRT and noticed that 5.1 and root and recovery and unlock bootloader are there so i think ill just go with that method. I just wanted to make sure im doing it right in order. Backup unlock BL and root and recovery
