If you go to Google's page for "Factory Images for Nexus Devices" then you can download a script which will install the official stock image, this will also give you the latest baseband (currently version M8974A-1.0.25.0.23 I think) but you should have that already if you ever did the official 4.4.1 or 4.4.2 stock OTA update, you can check your baseband version in fastboot.

I'd link to the page I mentioned earlier but I can only link once I have made ten posts.

Dude, he's looking for the recovery not the whole factory image. One will wipe your whole device, the other won't. If you're looking for your 10 posts there's better ways to do it

Well if they want the stock recovery then it's likely that they want stock Android too. They may also prefer to use an official script from Google or may have been unaware of the updated baseband and may want it, don't be angry at me for suggesting completely legitimate alternatives.

Not angry, just like to see productive ways to get a post count up. I'd suggest reading the pinned, stickies, threads in the general section to learn as much as you can about your device. Then ask questions there if you have any.

Yes, you will receive and be able to install the OTA (if you also have the stock recovery) but you will loose root though.
Thanks alot for your kind reply.
This is all covered in the "ota helpdesk" thread stuck at the top of this general forum.
Always read stickies before asking questions... including the one that says not to ask questions in the general forum

The Helpdesk thread must have been un-stickied in the last few days, because I saw you give this answer several times but had to go digging to find it myself.
There's conflicting information out there -- I've spent hours reading posts here but have had some places tell me that I *can't* get an OTA update when rooted, while some tell me that I *can*. I think the nuance is the problem. It sounds like OTA will work, but only if you haven't changed any system files, and also will wipe out your root and custom recovery. Still, I'd rather have to re-root than to manually update.
The best solution is the one that gets me from "rooted, stock version X" to "rooted, stock version X+1" in the least amount of time!

Actually, flashing the stock image yourself is quite easy and can be less problematic.

Good to know. So, I'm getting an N5 in the next week or two (shipped today, but has to be forwarded overseas by a relative ) and want it rooted, stock. Best bet is to OTA update (if it doesn't ship with 4.4.2) -> unlock bootloader -> install CWM -> install SuperSU? Then, next time Google issues an update, download the OTA ZIP and install it from CWM?
Won't that remove CWM and root, like I was saying? Or is there some version of the "stock image" I can download that doesn't overwrite recovery and/or the su binary/APK?
What you've said is correct, and then after an OTA just reflash CWM* and then re-root it - takes all of 30 seconds if you have the image on your computer
*CWM might give you the option of removing the stock recovery reflash script before rebooting, so say yes to it if it mentions it

the thread you posted says it will work for your model, in fact the dev only has your model.
this method should not require pre-rooting.
after flashing the recovery (uncheck "auto reboot" in odin before you start) boot directly into recovery and flash this zip and you should have root after you install a superuser app later.
be sure to put that file on your storage before starting. it is no big deal if you mess up and dont flash it right away. but it is best to boot into recovery anyways, so the factory recovery wont re-install itself later. (they have the ability to do this, but custom recoveries have the ability to stop it).
I have a similar problem for a Tab3 SM-T310.I have tried various Lineage ROMs that are supposed to be for this tablet but every one has failed to load as -Incompatible with your tablet. Does anyone know a link to a version that works?
[Q] [URGENT] Need quick reply about OTA of 5.0 and "system file modification" issue
Hello, i have such a situation now that i require a fast answer regarding nexus 5 and its lollipop update.
If the Nexus 5 device has been rooted using towelroot, and its softkey buttons are changed, will the phone get OTA update?
I have read that it might say that system files have been modified and that it wont let the device update via OTA.

youll get it but wont be able to apply it. but it doesnt matter, you can wait several hours after the files get dropped into aosp for a rooted 5.0 rom to come out, or you can flash the factory img. anyways, all the answers are out there. all you need to do is search.

as soon as google allows it, they will place a link there. so, asap. all they do is link it there, not upload it.
Alright thanks!
Ok so seeing as the Lollipop is rolling out today for the 2012 N7 and moto x, and I just read a post that it's being batch pushed to our great N5.
I am wondering if I should flash stock 4.4.4 and hit the check now button intill it comes or if I should wait for a custom build of Lollipop.
If I do go stock for the time being, can someone point me to a flashable stock image... And when 5 hits my phone i will up load an image for you guys...
Any way what would you do?
Form your own opinion
Well Where can I find a flashable stock image of 4.4.4
1. Google has already explained how OTA works. It starts at 1 percent of all devices and gradually climbs. If you don't get it the first batch on OTA, clicking Check now doesn't do a single thing, you don't lose your place in line or get another chance. It's a one time thing.
2. Because of #1 ... I'd wait for the factory image and flash that after backing up all your data.
technically, source is not up for the n5, and neither is the android 5.0 stock image for the n5. and @dicecuber is right, its up to you to decide, not us. me.. i flashed a aosp build with the older n5 binaries.
If you want stock use a toolkit. Better yet use google.

never ever tell someone who has no idea what they are doing to use a root toolkit. that is the absolutely worse piece of advice.
Going off of what the OP is saying, does anyone think that the image will be able to be dirty flashed over the latest Developer Preview?

It is not stock. Unlocked bootloader is fine, everything else is a no-go. The different kernel is the glaring problem, you can not apply an OTA with that non-stock kernel. The first, most complete, easiest option is to flash the latest factory image. Seeing as this is a new phone to you, I can't imagine that you have a ton of personal info to save. For me personally, I'd flash the image just so I know that I'm starting with a fresh clean slate. Then you can read up and root/mod how you'd prefer.

Not enough information from this to say. The custom kernel you installed is enough to prevent OTA updating.

It would be easy to say if the build didn't match a legit N5 image. If the build info in build.prop isn't informative, look for apps/features that shouldn't be in a stock image, eg. AOSP apps replacing the Google versions. Unfortunately, you do have to have some familiarity with stock Google to be able to spot something that's out of place.
