yo guys any of the programmers here learnt how to program from scratch(by reading/watching android tutorial straight w/o knowing anything)??without learning the needed language first. eg:java
degree is very expensive here and I have no chance to study so my best bet would be buying books about android app development and read about them and also referring online, will it be very difficult?? I know how to program in VB.net and C program which I learnt in diploma

One more question, how do game developers create the game graphics?? it can't be every programmer are so good at drawing lol, do they hire someone to draw??

Try basic4android. With that program you can make android apps in Basic, but code will be compiled in native java, and you will get native android app without emulators.

There are some resources on the internet where you can get free graphics for games, but usually when you need something specific the designer is a "must have".

I am very good with computers, very, very little programming experience, but I have an idea for an app that I would really like to create.
So how hard is the first app? I'm going to download the SDK today when i get home and do some reading and see what I can figure out..
I wish I could get someone I knew and trusted to help me out, but I'd be scared they'd try to steal my idea and cut me out of the loop...

Agreed, if you have no programming experience then you've got no hope. Although Android apps are coded in Java (therefore a nice OO language which is fairly easy to learn) you still need experience imo.
Anyone can learn to program but it takes time and effort. Leave Android for the moment and learn Java first. A starting point would be here http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/index.html
Once you're comfortable with Java, then move onto Android.
I also recommend you to read up on java, here's a good tutorial.

They use NetBeans instead of the famous and google supported Eclipse.
But you must first understand Java and programming in general.
im also interested in making an app, and have experience with java. is java the only language that you can use for android? how about jython, since my python is better than my java, it would be best to use that...

I think as long as you have an interest in it, and have some aptitude for coding, then you can learn basic programming for android pretty quickly.
I only had really basic programming knowledge, and I managed to get an Android app out - admittedly it's simple (calculation type app), but it's a starting point.
I would recommend having a look around the internet like code.google.com to check out some source code for programs similar to what you would like to write. Also the developers site http://developer.android.com/index.html has some good examples and guides - definitely worth reading.
I've been using appinventor.. I wish making a real app was this easy.. Of course it's just basic things that really nobody would buy, but it's neat to create apps without experience.

No coding method: search Google for Android app inventor.
Coding and better method: Android apps use JAVA. Take some basic online courses, then learn the Android sdk. (functions that are specific to android)
Option b is better, and if you have a little patience it won't be too hard.

If you want to get somewhere forget the app inventor and invest some time.
Start by using google on terms like "android tutorial" "android hello world".
Download eclipse and the android sdk (google has all the info and tutorial on how to do that).
The sdk has ALOT of very good example apps. From 3D drawing to system infos and interface layouts.

Depends entirely on what you want the app to do unfortunately. If you can give some basic ideas of what you want it to do it will be easier to say how hard it will be.
well all id like my first app to do is when it starts up to show a picture with text then link you to a web page.

Well sorry that's not helping much. I'm still at a loss on what to do.
Basically all you need to do is copy and paste the code from some tutorial examples, or you could even use the app inventor as you need barely any code to do this, for example:

Putting it all together and making it into an application shouldn't take you more than half an hour once you have gone through the starter tutorials to understand how and what it is you are using.

Well if you are really determined to learn it, you can manage doing it on your own too, with the help of free online resources. Search for a tutorial series on youtube. Here's one I had found useful when I was learning:

You should also buy a good book on Java programming and read it. That would help a lot too.

You can check android developers official site it has lot of tutorials and resources.
You can go to next university library and borrow any Android book. It will not include the latest version of OS, but it will have lot of fundamental information in one place, written by one person. Tutorails often show you how to solve single problem only.

I was wondering what developers thought about using eclipse. Is it easy to use or is it not. When I look online most veteran programmers say its easy to pick up but when I tried it seem kind of tough. I read an articule about it here

Same idea here. Just give some examples where you feel stuck and maybe we could help.
I think it really depends on your programming background. If you dont know Java, no IDE in the world is going to be easy to learn, however, if you do know Java and can understand how android layout are defined, then Eclipse is easy and straightforward!
Basically I dont know Java programming and Iam used to using visual tools like level editors where you can just code on the object after you place it on the screen. Are there any level editor type tools for eclipse?
The reason why Android uses Java is because the original goals of android was to make a fast spreading, open source smartphone OS that seats Google as the default search engine. Java had/has the largest community of developers. Because Android uses Java, applications can reuse lots of already written Java code saving programmers tons of time that it would've taken to rewrite in whatever other language they would have chosen.
As for a beginner trying to make an Android app -- there's no way to get around the coding. It could be much, much harder. Java's really popular and well documented language with lots of books on it. Learning it would be easier than lots of other languages they could've used.

I assume that on XDA there are some very talented programmers and might be able to guide me with my queries.
So heres the deal. I'm planning to get my hands on learning c#. But the the catch is I want to learn it on my android tablet. The reason why I want to learn it on an Android tablet? Well I am a Computer graphics artist and want to get into apps and game development for android and ubuntu. AND I have time to learn programming only after my working hrs i.e at home. So I want put my galaxy tab10.1 to a better more productive use. Obviously I will not be developing apps on my tab because I have xeon and i7 systems at my office to do that.
So I did some Google and found this webpage very usefull for all the programming tools on android.

The point of this thread is "how one can learn and practice various programming languages on the android device itself"
EDIT: I YouTubed for learning c# and found that to begin with c#, if we are Windows OS then .NET visual studio is required and if we are in Ubuntu OS Google mono is required.
I don't if we may need Google mono in android.

C# is not a language you can easily code on android, or code android apps in.
If your looking to make programs for ubuntu and android java really is the best way forward, alot of game engines let you build a game in pure java and then easily convert it to a android game

I was under the impression that while you can get IDE's for a range of languages to do coding etc, if you want to actually make android apps Java really is your best bet

It sounds like he wants to do Android app development/Game development, not ROM development.
For general-purpose app development I would suggest learning Java and the Android SDK. There are numerous books available to help you, for example The Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development. Older editions are free but I would recommend getting the newest one since Android is a fast-developing platform. The Android SDK site is also a good place to start.
For game development you have more options. Corona and Cocos2d-x are both cross platform (can deploy to Android and iOS). Corona code is written in Lua, and Cocos2d-x can be written in C++ or Lua. There are also a lot of other options available if you look around.
I'd still recommend learning some basic Android apps before tackling game development, though.

Great idea, i hope you have much time and even more endurance.
The first main challenge is understanding the concepts of java and object oriented programming.
Depending on your preference i would suggest starting with online tutorials for java or a good java book.
As soon as possible you should look for an own project, just learning in theory is hard and no fun.
To get started with android look for googles online tutorials here:

watch tutorial videos on youtube, install the sdk and build your first "hello world" app.
