Just bought a "spares/repairs" - looking good? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Okay, I am not one to complain, even if I buy a dud, I am man enough to know that I have free will, and that I accepted that something was bought with some element of risk... BUT...
I'd like to know your verdict on my latest purchase, and the likelihood of it being a feasible repair; I only want this thing for the stunning camera:
My buy ---> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161221466291?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
Many thanks guys and girls - your expertise is appreciated a lot
Matt.

There's no way of telling what is working and what isn't on that device. I personally wouldn't buy it but that's just me.

I agree, based on the auction description there is no way of having any idea why its broken or what it will take to get it working. You can end up spending more money to fix it, than if you had just bought a working one.

The owner is extremely courteous and has told me that it has a few "bubbles" on the screen (likely a cheapo digitiser/lcd set), and that it just won't turn on. It's not a King's ransom - £38 - so I just took a punt. I can recover that outlay as a last resort, if it is totally beyond repair. If nothing else, it's another feather in my cap of repair expertise

Sounds like you'd already made up your mind then.

Oh my god. This is bad.

So I just got back from the tmobile store, after sending in my g1 I bricked attempting to install the danger spl, claiming I had no idea what happened. Then I received a call from the person at the store that was helping me informing me that HTC would do a 'check' to see if it had been rooted, and fine me $400 if they discovered any unofficial roms on it. I told this man nothing.
Is this bs, or what?!
Either security has been upped in the recent past, and I'm going to have to pay $400, or he just tells that to everyone to scare them, I have no clue.
Any additional information would be appreciated very much.
TC,
No worries mate. It's BS, he's just looking to spook you, or he/she is a complete idiot of a rep. They can't fine you for it. You own the phone, not them (unless you're on some sort of a lease agreement contract I'm not aware of).
The most they'd do is just return the phone to you or something.
Cheers.

By not following directions, mostly.
Mine was taken by haykuro's death bringer.
-
This person called me back, and claims that HTC can and will check every phone sent in for unofficial roms. I'm not sure what gave me away, but he said if I rooted my phone, then do NOT send it in, because they will not replace it, and I will need to pay $400 for a new g1. He says he knows this from experience.
I'm rather frightened now, but would much rather trust you guys. So, encouragement pl0x?

TC,
This changes things. You see, when you said a 400 USD fine...that's BS....but...you should have the option to keep your bricked G1 (assuming they can't fix it). They can't keep it and not return it you. After that point, it's really your choice if you want to buy a new one or not.
Cheers.

Do you have 'Accident' insurance?
Yes, they can tell if you rooted it, or flashed it with an unofficial ROM. By doing that, you invalidated your warranty so if they really DO check it, they are pretty unlikely to repair it for free, hence the $400.

I wouldn't be surprised. You know how a damaged hard drive can be rendered inaccessible to the average joe? And how there are data-recovery companies that can somehow still get data back for you?
I'm pretty sure they can tell. If that's the case, like I've said before, it's really your call if you want to purchase a new phone or buy a second hand rooted one in the marketplace.

It's only bricked to you, not to them. It's more likely they'd just reflash the ROM and not bother to check, but what with Google's recent actions on trying to stop custom Android ROMs containing their closed source software, they MIGHT be pressuring HTC to check for custom ROMs as well...
It's your choice whether you want to take the chance or not. The worst that can happen is that they won't honour the warranty and either send the device back to you, or require you to pay for the repair.
Good luck for you and take easy.

LMFAO! That guy needs to get his ass kicked! You can turn your device in a custom ROM server and the only thing they can do is return it to you without repairing it. Nothing more. Ha! What ...... .... that rep must be. ........ ... ...... ..... haha!
If they catch you with a custom ROM, you would have to pay for the repair yourself, but that is normal. I never, NEVER, go to official repair shops. I just go to any repair centre and pay the price for the repair. Saves me a lot of nerves lol.

It's not difficult, but you can't do it from home because it requires dedicated hardware to connect directly to the phone's main board.
How do you think they flash these things in the first place, hmm? They sure as hell don't run the same type of flashing process that we do!

[Q] I just broke my triumph's screen!

I know I messed up by not getting the 5 dollar insurance. I sure am pissed of at myself now. To make matters worse I purchased my triumph on Ebay. lol. Does any cellphone repair store deal with these phones already, I might have to check sometime this week But is there any website where maybe I can purchase a gorilla glass screen replacement. I would gladly take on the repair challenge myself. Thanks everyone! Hopefully someone can help and I would greatly appreciate it!
(Edit) A nice VM chick allowed me to get it insured, surprisingly I still had time. If anyone wants to ill open it up for sure when I receive my new one.... for science!!!
Not to rub salt in the wound but I seen a bigger screen and figured I'd be the first one to break it so I got the insurance. I got mine from Best Buy. Might be a dumb question but will VM warranty it?
I believe BB only warrants the phone usually for 30 days, I'm not to sure. Regarding VM as soon as you sign up, you often receive a text that lets you add on insurance for 5 extra dollars. GET IT!! Because as of now my best hope is to just go to a random repair shop and see if they can even fix it.

http://imgur.com/a/fMIeG Here ya go! Basically the touchscreen still functioned but about 80% of the top screen was not working at all. Then the battery died and it did not want to take a charge anymore. Basically both issues are unrelated it just so happens that Motorola really rushed this thing, and you can tell what a terrible job they did looking at the whole sub-forum. I wish I would have avoided spending 300 bucks and would have grabbed the Optimus V instead, I never hear anything bad about it. And being a college student I cant afford a 100$ monthly plan.

I thought I read somewhere that VM warrants their phones for a year, no matter where you buy them. I could be wrong, and it could be for manufacturer's defects only. I'll look for the link when I get home.

One-Year Warranty
All mobile phones purchased directly from Virgin Mobile, or one of our authorized resellers, include a one-year warranty from the original equipment manufacturer. If you experience an equipment malfunction, call Virgin Mobile At Your Service at 1-888-322-1122 and we will arrange for a replacement mobile phone.
I seriously doubt that would cover a cracked lcd screen. But I guess it doesn't hurt to try.

[Q] Lost My Sensation, HTCSense Website not working anymore?

I was at the gym yesterday and apparently I might have left it there by mistake, I went to the htc sense site to track it down but apparently they 'renovated it' and now you can't track it! Is there any way I can track it down after its lost (or stolen I guess)?
I downloaded Plan B but apparently it didn't install correctly or something because I didnt get any email yet (probably since there isn't any wifi where the phone is)
Quite a stupid move from htc to shut down such a good feature like that :/
Sorry for your loss, that really sucks dude. HTC did warn people they were going to remove that feature a couple of months ago. I rather liked it as well. The only other thing I can think of right now is, try having your service provider track it down using the phones gps. Sometimes it works. Good luck.

Really? By saying lost I was being polite. If I really just lost it at the gym it would be on the machine where I left it on, which it wasn't the next day. Whoever took it took off the sim card cos it wont dial and I had it charged an hour before gym so the battery should still be working.
So yes, still think its just 'lost'?

You left it somewhere, someone picked it up, YOUR FAULT! It's not stolen and whoever has it would not be prosecuted for picking it up. Maybe you should pay more attention to your $500 piece of technical equipment. Only a truly entitled person would believe that the police should take time away from investigating murders, kidnappings, and assaults, to find their phone. Is your phone that important? Is this what you are telling us?

Indeed I did, well I had a custom rom so maybe he'd find it difficult due to the different drivers that might not be compatible with what he's used to. Also, I contacted support and they said the phone can be 'locked' if I give them the IMEI and Serial Number, which I did. lets see what will happen!

Wouldn't the phone just be locked out? I'm also curious... if it was used in a different country/provider, would it work? I would assume it'd work since the chances of your provider blocking the IMEI in the entire earth would be unlikely! If so, the answers seem pretty straightforward as to what will happen lol. Either it'll get sold or just not be usable!

Nono HTC told me they will block the phone themselves, so apparently it should be unusable worldwide I hope!
If it is in the wrong hands then it has probably been torn down and used for parts at this point. It's become a growing trend around here with lots of aftermarket repair companies getting busted for being nothing more than chop shops...
Well, here's what they said after giving them my IMEI number
"Dear sir again, we are really sorry for what happened with your device and we apologize for the inconvenience regarding HTCSense functionality. We will enter your data in our system, and we will list your device as stolen one. As soon as somebody tries to contact us with this data we will notify the authorities.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. "

High resale price - why?

I just observed used Nexus 5 being sold for about $35 less than new within countries which have plenty of stock. Is this the "one born every minute" or something else?
example of used $350
and example of new $385
With OnePlus out in a few weeks for $349 plus unknown on tax and postage, and a few other low-priced unlocked handsets out there, I'm puzzled why Nexus 5 is holding its used price, and its coming under attack on its new price.
Because it's a great phone. Oneplus one may be too big for some. Plus it's a true developers phone. No one knows what the oneplus one sources / blobs for drivers will be like...

90% is cheaper than 100%. Not everyone is as fortunate as you to be able to pay 100%
"but it's only $35"
Someone could feed themselves for a week on that. Don't make the mistake of confusing being frugal with being dumb, or that everyone is the same as you

If they're starving they can do with a cheaper Nexus 4 for months.
Warranty is part of frugality, if my new N5 breaks I got some postage costs probably, but I'm less exposed financially than I am with used.
Well luckily for them, it's not your decision what they do with their money
Some people don't care about warranty. Some people know how to use warranty. It's not a problem for them, it's not a problem for you so don't worry yourself about people being "dumb". If you're asking "why isn't everyone like me?", well that's a philosophical question, probably better angled towards facebook

Because the phone is worth a lot more than $350 to most people. Similar phones cost $700 and the Oneplus isn't even being sold really.
Also countries that don't have the Play Store devices, their only choice is to buy them second hand and they are willing to pay as much as the retail cost.

I agree plus we don't know the potential scare story inside the OnePlus for at least month, it needs bulk ownership first from those who have another device already as their main phone.
Yep, that's a reason in some countries, not sure of the reason within USA.

Those living in other countries buy our used phones. $350 for a used N5 is still half the price they would pay for a new phone in their country.
Anyone living in North America can buy the phone for $350 new and have no incentive to buy it used for that price.

I'm well aware of that axis, selling from inside to USA to outside, doesn't explain buying within USA.
I'm selling my N4 in my next overseas trip next month

What makes you think people in the US are buying them used for more than they cost new? I would just assume they are all out of seas, but there is no real way of telling. Or is there?
If they are, they must not realize they can buy it new for the same price from Google. Or perhaps they are attempting a scam of some sort.

The example I gave, don't know for sure who bought but a "I will buy it" message from someone saying in they are USA, and this after I had pointed out 10% more gets new offer. I'm just puzzled, doesn't make sense.
Oh well.

Strange for sure. Perhaps they saw extra value in a phone that has an unlocked bootloader and root access?

Even in the USA, sometimes it takes a while to get. And beyond that, it's still cheaper than any other alternatives, and some people prefer it to be cheaper. If it's 10% cheaper than retail, then that's still 10% they save.

No, there's nothing else. People can sell them for that price because people are willing to buy it for that price. That's what the demand is.
Maybe its the rumors this is the last nexus.
Plus good luck to those waiting for the pluseOne it sounds good on paper but who knows if they will ever get to the point of mass production.

Right...being that there may not be a Nexus 6, people are probably snapping these up now because they become a collector's item and a rare commodity.
Craigslist in my area has them going mint for 250 to 325

Hey guys... I'm curious...

I'm currently on a Galaxy S4 Active i537... locked down... does anyone know where I might be able to buy a Nexus 5 off of someone for cheap? I'm in high school so money is an issue for me, so I apologize. I'm looking for a good phone I can load Kali on, as well as full freedom with the bootloader! Thanks in advance!

Pretty sure XDA doesn't really allow these sort of threads/posts regarding where/who to buy things from, with the exception of linking to Swappa, the recommended site.
Other than Swappa, you will probably find many results for buying new or used if you put it into a search engine and look around.

Haha yes! But honestly working from high school looks great on a resume. Something I should've started when I was a teen. The skills you learn and being independent are awesome.
The S4 may sell for just enough. You probably could sell it and buy a used N5 cheap enough.
