Bit of info to share with yall. - Android General

I thought I'd post this after hearing about it. There is a Web site that offers a list of known games for Android that do not have in app purchases or adds. I support this and thought it was good to see someone doing the same.
The Web page is
http://honestandroidgames.com/
I want to make it clear that I support devs of games by buying games from the market place but do not support 0 work annoyances from in app purchases.
Using real money for something none existent in physical form is going to ruin the economy.
I program here and there and can understand advertising a bit to earn a little cash but not excessively like full screen videos or timed banners that lock up the screen so you can not go about what you are doing unless you close and reopen the app or just get tired of it all and uninstall the app.
Enuf ranting lol
Again the Web site is:
http://honestandroidgames.com/
I am in no way taking credit for this site or what's on it I just am sharing the info.

I thought about making it configurable to switch from cartoon transform sound to the movie one. I had a version that was my kid saying "doot doot doot doot" which was awesome for no one but his parents. Other ideas? I guess I could just make it so that you could point it to your own sound file easy enough.
Sorry about that Mikey. I'm sure I probably clicked through those rules somewhere without reading them close enough (or at all ).
I'm fine with leaving the edit you made as is, or whatever. I would like to keep the thread open to continue to get feedback about the applet if possible.
Thanks!

or make a free version for xda users or separate the app on the market with a donation app for the main app
can anyone tell me about their experience with these donation apps? Does anyone actually donate?
funny. How about Optimus saying "Autobots, Roll Out"? Cartoon version, not the movie!

If the app or live wallpaper is worth it, also if i keep it on my phone for more then 4 days, yes i will hit up their donation link.
Most of them are .99-1.49.......that in no means will break me.
Or link the donation in the settings menu of your app.
I never made much with the donation approach. The freemium (free version / premium paid version) model works pretty well though.

Haha, I guess I'd have to come up with some more features before that was an option. How about embedding AdMob and the like? Any experience/luck with that model?
Depends on the type of app. I'm guessing your user wouldn't spend much time in the app other than changing a few settings. I have an app that's similar (basically just an on/off switch for a function), and it makes essentially nothing from adds. It has around 25k users, but over the last four months or so I've made about $15 from ads.
On the other hand, ads can be an incentive to upgrade to the premium, ad-free version.
I'd say add extra sound effects, remove the ads, and sell the premium version for a buck. In my experience, one dollar is the psychological barrier where the user has to be really convinced how awesome something is to spend any more.

Thanks for the tips! Good point about not spending time in the app. When enabled my service launches itself on startup so I was thinking I could throw an add in users face then.
FWIW I tried the flip side of AdMob (advertising through them) and didn't notice even the slightest bump in sales. Have you had any better luck with that?
Can u add the ability to choose our own sound?

Just a suggestion, perhaps have as free the bare basic 1 sound, one function, then premium gives more sounds and the ability to add your own. And then possibly add sounds to more functions (if possible) such as screen on, or hinge up or down, stuff like that.

Good suggestions. I'm thinking I'll def'ly add more sounds since I've had several requests for that now. I'm trying to decide if the set-your-own-sound feature should belong to a new app, since this one is transformer themed, and that would make it more general purpose.
Never tried advertising through admob. If I ever make enough money from admob to buy a campaign I might try advertising. Might take awhile, lol.
I'd be careful about introducing ads outside of your own UI. Personally, I don't think an app that I'm not actively using should have the right to show me ads. I know apps have gotten banned from the market for doing similar. There's even some company that offers a drop in solution for creating notification bar ads outside of your app; seems a bit shady to me.

Android APP Developer needed 50/50 revenue split

Android APP developer needed
$150 Good Faith base once project is started and then Revenue Share 50/50 Split
Already have desktop website with 10,000 Members , 100,000 Monthly Uniques to our website and 1 million page views...so a Base of Buyers is already in Place on top of Android Market
Fuel Stations locator Map (and list view) ..with Prices
User should see x amount of Stations in a select-able radius
User should either be able to Login/or register
User should then be able to Post Prices
Members can have Favorites list
odds and ends
Already have database ..and hopefully you can just reuse some coding from the websites pages
I have neither the talent , time , energy or money to do this on my own.. essentially looking for someone to develop and maintain the APP side of our Business as their "baby" and simply handle the odd and end issues that arise , basic maintenance , keeping the APP updated as Android is updated etc ...
I provide database / data / members TRAFFIC ..
So a nice 50/50 split
Anyone interested in a revenue share on a APP project like this please PM me
Thanks !

What's the deal with Go Launcher? Malicious?

Over the past week I've seen people on here and people on other sites say that Go Launcher has malicious code in it and that it steals your data to sell. Me and my mum have both been using it for about a year now. Why would Google let it stay in the market and how could it be one of the most popular launchers if it's malicous?
Is there really something wrong with it?
No, it just started embracing ads since it's free :\
Mostly go contacts

No..
But they added ads which might be dangerous for your phone.
I haven't noticed any ads.... Where exactly have they placed them?
What about this AppCenter and GameZone they added?!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's specific third-party themes that are including ads, not Go Launcher itself.

That would make more sense.
What is it with everyone hating on ads! I mean seriously! If you hate ads or think they are dangerous which they are not, then be willing purchase an app...which 99% of you will not obviously...that's why ads exist. Whats the difference between an ad on a website and an app? Nothing. Both come from the same place.
Oh no an ad! How dare they try to earn from a free app!

jp idk if they do or not but it seems funny.
Just be thankful you have little square ads you can ignore and not 30 sec videos with no skip button after 5 secs like youtube and draw w/friends.
Those things have a way to really get me mad.
Ads are ok. Im happy that push ads are going to be extinct though. Banner ads don't really bother me.

I stopped using Go Launcher because it was running services for apps/Go Plugins I didn't install. That was the final straw, really. I found that it became really bloated and overly complex. The Go Launcher team are introducing too many functions IMHO and not focusing on what they do best: making an excellent, flexible launcher. I do miss it in some ways. You won't find as much flexibility for free...
These kinda threads always make me laugh. If you want privacy, lock yourself in your house and never go outside, never go online, never use your phone, send a "trusted" person to buy your groceries.
What are they gonna do? Sneak in, steal the hot pics your gf sent you on whatsapp? Attempt a home invasion and rob you of your playboys? Or heaven forbid, forward the hot pics your mistress sent to your mom and your wife/gf.
So what if they serve ads? Dont like it, use another app. These developers need to earn a living too, they use a model that provides you with FREE software for your phone, to use at your discretion. Go Launcher is by far the best launcher out there, it kicks the pants off anything that comes at a price too. If you dont like ads, dont use themes which push ads. Its that simple. Or use an app like adfree
Threads like this hurt the OSS/FS community. The privacy issue is actually pretty moot since most users sign up for forums and trial software and gladly hand over personal information. If you silly enough to keep your bank account details on your phone (which you going to hand out via using your credit/debit card at your local convience store anyway, where for all you know al queida has planted sleeper agents) then you deserve to have your wife see what you and your mistress get up to
Go launcher is the best launcher, if there are ads, please support the developer. Tell me one thing that you could do with any other launcher that you cant with go. This ad method is least intrusive, must be encouraged as means for developers to permit core functionalities free
The ads are from themes not from go launcher..

Yeah, exactly, the crappy notification spam comes from themes via AirPush. Nice to see some antimalware apps start detecting this crap. I have nothing against banners, spamming notification bar is completely different though. On the Go apps note, Go Keyboard free has exactly this kind of annoying spam.

Advertising blockers

As some may (or may not) know, Google has removed a number of this type of app from the Play Store citing violation of some arcane clause of Play Stores T's & C's. Can anybody shed any light on the real reason for this. I can't personally see a problem with using an ad blocker. The devs are still doing what they have to by putting ads in their apps.....still fulfilling their obligations. By using an ad blocker, I'm exercising my personal choice/right to NOT have to view them.....in the same way that I could choose to watch a TV station that doesn't broadcast ads over one that does......where's the problem with that? Is it just me, or does anybody else think that Google is wrong for doing this?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2
yep i think google are out of order for stopping these add blockers as i was useing and now my phone is full of rubbish adds again !!! boo to you google .....
I use one too....updated my ROM but did a full wipe first....so it got deleted. Tried to re download it from play store and it had gone.....without any warning/explanation.
Did a Google search for it (no irony there then lol) and found an alternative DL source for it....so, luckily for me, I'm not being bombarded with loan offers and other s**t like that......
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2
I'm not sure, but it may be for ethical reasons. Blocking ads, preventing developers receiving their deserved income.
Not sure how blocking an ad will prevent developers from getting paid......surely their money comes from paid/donate versions of their apps......can Google turn around to a dev and say "X's phone is running an ad blocker and as a result doesn't see the ads that you included in your app.....therefore we aren't going to pay you" I'd be surprised if Google had that apple big brother capability to be honest......Android isn't as 'locked down' as that.....on the contrary.....we all know it's as open as it's possible to get.......
And if you're suggesting that sales linked directly to ad exposure will suffer if people can't see the adverts......
My reply to that is.......how many Android users who encounter those adverts see them as anything other than an annoyance.....are an appreciable number of them/us REALLY going to go out and buy the product as a result of seeing an advert on a phone.....I wouldn't think so......
One last point.......
How can the advertisers even begin to estimate how much revenue is generated (or lost) through phone 'spamming'.......I'm sure they wouldn't decrease or withhold payment to a dev because a percentage of phone users use ad blockers......how would they ever find out........

Apps with ads in them bring in revenue for the developer. Why else do you think they would they be there?
Some are paid per click, some are pay per view. So if you are blocking ads, you'll never click on, or view one, so the developer will never get paid from ads on your device.
With respect, before I rooted my phone, when I encountered these ads on a daily/hourly basis, I NEVER clicked them anyway.....and I'm sure I'm not the only one.....in fact, I'd be prepared to suggest that only a tiny minority of phone users actually do click on them........
And I will ALWAYS choose (and have chosen) the pro/paid/donate option for an app if I think that the app merits it....or if I want the added functionality that the paid version offers......so it's not as if I'm saying that the dev doesn't deserve to be paid, because I will choose to pay him for his app if needs be.....
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2
I think this is Googles try to keep Android attractive as a platform for developers! Why would you develop for a platform where everybody is using a adblocker therefore you can't make any money of it?
I'am using AdAway myself. You can still get it from a non official maket!
If I had to guess, google must have gotten so much grief from devs and big companies that use ads that they had to remove these apps from the play store... =/
What about ads away.......its not working for u?
I hate my X and love my Next.......... Conditions apply*
Google has to negotiate contracts to determine the amount of compensation for ads. By taking away ad blockers, they are able raise the price of advertisement costs (or keep it the same if advertisers are trying to lower it due to ad blockers). More revenue from ads mean more revenue to Google AND the developers.
Also, why are you guys even on XDA if you think the only place to download an app is the Play Store? Probably those same people that say flash doesn't work on Jellybean...
I am still using adb app....... Angry birds with lot of stupid ads
I hate my X and love my Next.......... Conditions apply*
It's hard enough to make any revenue as a Android developer. Since Google decided to release the market without the payment option in the beginning, nowdays Android phone users still don't wan't to pay for apps.

Most of them requires, but there is one which doesn't require mandatory root such as Ad Block Plus I guess.

Attention app makers (please stop spamming for reviews)

It's getting ridiculous! Too often I open an app and get a pop-up asking for a review (most of them I've already left one for). If your app is worthy of a review you'll get one.!
If it's a free app, thank you and I'll deal with it. But most of them I paid for. Examples are GymRat, Tapatalk, MobileBiz Pro, Office Suite Pro, Instant Heart Rate I'm very good about leaving reviews (mostly positive, but not afraid to leave a negative) for an app. So please stop it.
And if it is something the play store adds to the app, let me know and I will pass this along

I adgree I don't mind the little ads to the side so the developers get a little money buts its annoying when every time I try to use something there's a giant pop up that says RATE ME NOW PLEASE GIVE ME REVIEW lol
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk 2
Unfortunately, the search rankings are heavily affected by number / quality of reviews. Even good apps have a very hard time reaching a large user base without paying $0.40 per download, so developers want to get the most out of each of these downloads, especially if the app is free.
My approach is to only notify long-time users, and to only notify them once. I think this is reasonable.
Unfortunately there is no way to detect whether a user has already rated your app, and there likely never will be.
IMO if I pay for an app no time is reasonable (I thought more people would agree with me). I understand the need/want to be rated for exposure, but nobody likes spam even if it only happens once. Especially if I spent money to get an ad free version. And like it or not pushing a notification for a review is an advertisement.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
I have to agree. If I pay for an app and hit the screen to open it, I want it to open to the app right away. not a nag screen. I wonder if this is a checkbox that Google has put in when posting an app in Play? If so Google, please add a "never ask again" option to that. Thanks.
