Hi everybody!
I read here and in other sites that people use video converter to watch their mkv files because the stock video players (photo and gallery) cannot reproduce the audio track. This is true. But we just need an app to watch these videos.
MX Player gives us the possibility to watch mkv (hd and full hd video). No need to convert it or to install codecs.
When the mkv starts just tap on the note icon on the right corner and select "USE AUDIO S/W DECODER" (something like this, cause I have it in Italian) and you will see and listen your mkv video.
I'm not related to mx player and i don't want to advertise it, but this is the software i use, maybe there are other software that work too.
Hit thanks if I helped you :good:

I wrote this post because i read on a lot of sites, included another thread in xda that users couldn't listen to mkv files. Nobody answered to these people that didn't know mx player is the solution, so that's why i wrote this post

Hello all,
I have begun to convert some avi files I have, so they can run on my Xoom. At present I am using Imtoo Video Converter 7 with the Xoom H.264 profile. What I am seeing is that the size of the converted video is approximately 3 times larger than the original avi. Is this normal?
Thanks,
Steve
Why bother?
Use MX Player Pro and it plays AVI fine. In fact, I stream this from my NAS and play all kinds of video formats using MX Player Pro.
No conversion needed.
There are many video players as well.

Here is Moto's guidelines on formats and rates supported.

I use MX Player Pro and am happy with it in general. But the Xoom is a little picky/sensitive to hi-rate files. I have a lot of high-rate MOV's that need to be downsized to to not stutter terrribly. Same for very hi-rate AVI's.

Maybe the avi files are more compressed than what you're converting to. I use Rock Player it will play files that MX Player won't.

+1 here. I use mx pro with MediaHouse to stream from my dlna server. Only problem is the high profile stuff. I have a massive collection of teh prawnz all in wmv and mx plays them nicely
+1 for MX. Swipe to ff/rw was enough to get me to try it, the 3 decode options made me keep it. If a video won't play, long press on the file, and you can choose between hw/sw/sw fast decode. So far, I haven't found a video that fails all 3.
Video Conversion
You want to convert videos use handbrake ( mac or pc ) . It's fast and makes great looking video , or use sb player on the device itself .
Try The qq player meanwhile the mx player is Very good

It is quite normal for re-encodes to end up bigger than the original due to it trying to up-scale the video/audio. Like others in the thread, i suggest using MX player for avi's (never had any problems with them,) or using Handbrake to downscale/re-encode/etc 1080i/p videos to something that the Xoom can handle easier. I have had problems with high resolution mkv's (even sometimes 720p) even in MX.
So playing mkv files with original videoplayer and mx player streams the video really well but with no sound :/ Do you guys know any good video player that doesn't lag, run smooth and support sound. ? btw Vplayer is lagging but sound works.
in this section, look for the thread regarding blu ray ripping. the answer is in there.

There are some posts already about this. I use BSPlayer.
bsplayer ftw
ffmpeg is the key
With BS Player or Dice Player, you need to use ffmpeg library. You need to copy a file named libffmpeg.so to /mnt/sdcard/. Sorry, but XDA rules forbid me to post URLs (not 10 posts yet). If you need the file, i can send you a dropbox link by MP.

MKV is a container format, meaning it can contain multiple tracks for video and audio in different formats (even subtitles and chapters are supported). The sound track probably is in DTS format. There are only a few players around for android that can play DTS encoded audio. BSplayer and VPlayer.
Depending on the bitrate of the video, VPlayer does "lag" on some movies for me, BSplayer hasn't done that yet.
edit:
If you can to know what tracks and file encodings are in the mkv check out MediaInfo (windows) or mkvmerge GUI from MKVToolNix (cross platform).
BSplayer streams all my 1080p from my server flawless. The fact that it gets subs auto is amazing. Best player i tried so far tbh

Hi.
I still haven't decided to buy this tablet yet. So I was wondering if the built in player displays subtitles embedded in mkvs, ass or similar files? I normally use moboplayer in order to play my soft-subbed videos on my cellphone since only a few players support this feature.
If this is not supported, is there another video player that supports this but also allows it be floating like the video player?
Thanks!

I believe that the default video player only accepts SRT subtitle file. MKV playback starts off a little bit slow but picks right up at normal speed after a few seconds.
In most of cases, it support srt. I had no problem on most movies, included mkv.
Try a app call BS player, its in the play store, I love it and it will search for the subtitles any movies you are watching..for you.

Use DICE player . It supports all subtitles and floating screen , and if subtitles are not synced properly but you don't have choice , this player can slow down subtitles or accelerate them during play .
I have seen questions posted for three years about how to select the proper audio track on Android. I have installed the latest MX player version on my Android TV running my SONY, and with identical video files (AVI, MKV, M2TS), or the original M2TS (25+ gig) file from a decrypted BluRay, I still cannot select the soundtrack, but instead get the directors comments. My only solution is to have VLC to run the videos that MX player has problems with.
Is there a solution yet ? A simple drop-down to select the proper audio track ?
Thanks in advance

Thd audio
Me too I'm playing an HDR video that's playing fine but when trying to play the audio track that's a separate .thd file it's not even showing up in the files which means it doesn't recognise it as an audio track
Hello,
I'm using the mx player pro on a Sony Xperia 1.
HP.264 mkv files work fine. VC-1 mkv files don't play. VLC player is able to play the VC-1 files on this device.
I use mx player because of the ability to change subtitle position. VLC doesn't have this feature.
Can there anything be done to make Vc-1 mkv files play on MX Player?
Thank you for helping.

Hello,
Due to other reasons I had to reset the app preferences(system-> reset options -> reset app preferences). After this the MX Player Pro was able to play VC-1 on a Sony Xperia 1. But after a while, without changing anything the situation was the same as described in the first post.
Best regards
Same here. Videos containing codec VC-1 can't play video without problem. When I play video after 3 minutes frames are reduced to 3-5 FPS. About 5 minutes video is freeze.
