I'm having big problems with my cellular data connection. I keep getting the following intermittent problem . . .
My phone will display full signal connectivity i.e. 4 bars with H displayed, However I am often unable to make a data connection.
If I use a network monitoring app such as "Network Signal Info" it shows that I have data connectivity (see 1st attachment), however if I try to access a data service there is no connection. Running an app such as "Ookla Speed Test" will result in a warning showing "Network communication issues" (see 2nd attachment). Data services refuse to work (the 3rd attachment shows a Google Now search)
This has been a persistent problem irrespective of my location. I have even swapped SIM cards with my wife who is on a different network (I'm on 3, she's on O2) and still had the problem - this indicates it's not my network provider but the phone / software.
I'm running stock Android 4.4.2 which has been rooted. The only mod I'm running is Xposed Module. However even disabling this still results in the problem.
The lack of data connection can occur for a few seconds or even hours. Turning the phone off and back on again (or putting it into Airplane mode) can sometimes fix the issue, but not always.
I've re-installed cleared the caches and re-installed Android 4.4.2 but this not made any difference.
Any help would be much appreciated as this is becoming increasingly frustrating.

I added the two build.prop edits to disable dormancy and change hsxpa to 3 (ro.ril.fast.dormancy.rule=0 and ro.ril.hsxpa=3) and also changed radios. You might try those two.
Thanks @MrObvious I'll give the build.prop edits a try and update the status in a day or two

I have noticed that there have been a few times where WiFi is connected and 4G is connected also. The only remedy is to turn off and on WiFi. When this happens, sometimes I have no data connection (probably cause they are conflicting) but this can't be good for battery.
4G mobile network still connected when Wifi is ON?!
I have this exact same problem! Thing is, mine just started showing this behavior like a day or two ago. It's doing it right now. Both my Wifi and 4G icons appear in the notification bar. The 4G icon isn't showing activity (the download and upload arrows are dimmed), BUT if I go to my "Phone Info" app, and go to Phone Information it shows:
GSM service: In service
GPRS service: Connected
Network Type: HSDPA
Before whenever I was on Wifi only the Wifi icon would show up, and Phone Info would show GPRS Service as : Disconnected, i.e. normal behavior. Now it appears there is a conflict somewhere and the 4G network is showing as connected even when wifi is on.
Now, I did make some changes recently:
1) Temp-rooted and pm disabled a bunch of bloatware - this was like 4 or 5 days ago and I didn't have the problem at all so I'm not sure if it's related.
2) I unchecked Wireless Settings > Mobile Networks > "Enable always on mobile data" - Thought it might save battery when in sleep mode.
I think the problem started after #2. I've since checked that option back on, restarted, airplane mode, battery pull etc., but it's still exhibiting the same behavior. I've never seen this happen on any of my past Android devices (a lot). If I go to the Quick Settings it shoes Mobile Network is OFF but it IS checked. It's really confusing. When you turn Wifi on, Mobile network should disconnect, but according to phone Info, mine is on and I've been getting "network issue, try again" in the Market, and "Network Communication issues" in the Speedtest app so clearly something is being affected.
This has been my ONLY problem with my Sensation thus far, and the fact that it JUST started doing this makes me wonder what I could have done to affect it.
Thoughts?
EDIT: Every once in awhile the 4G icon WILL disappear leaving only Wifi on, and Phone info shows GPRS service: Disconnected, but eventually the 4G/2G icon comes back and Phone info shows GPRS service: Connected, so it keeps trying/turning itself on even though my Wifi is connected. WTF!
i dont have the problem of having both, i have the problem that my wifi seems to like turning itself off now and then. this has only started happening since temp root also
Thanks to Sdobron from the thread I had started, it looks like the My Account/My Device app may be the culprit. You can try killing the tasks/services and see if it helps. I personally just disabled both apps like I disabled all of the other bloatware, rebooted, and it seems to have fixed the problem so far (for the last hour anyway). Now I get only Wifi icon, not both Wifi and 4G, and the GPRS services is "Disconnected" as it should be when Wifi is on.

Hmmm did you disable any apps, and if so, which? Is your Wifi sleep policy set to "Never"?
Hi guys
I'm well known for being quite wordy. I'll try to keep it short with this one. Summary: my data stream is interrupted, apps don't get or lose connection.
Network situation:
Signal strength ok up to excellent (~75-90dBm). Technology usually UMTS/HSPA, problem also occurs on GPRS/EDGE though. Happens when stationary but equally when on the move.
Devices affected:
HTC DesireZ, Samsung Galaxy Note, Samsung Galaxy SII, Motorola Defy, HTC Desire HD. Occurred first when I was using the DesireZ but is still happening now on the Galaxy Note.
Issue/problem description:
Despite the steady and good connection to the network and of course an open data connection - we speak of Android - the actual data flow seems to be/get interrupted all the time.
When I hit a window of "data deadness" the browser doesn't load pages, online-apps refuse to work showing a spinning busy/wait indicator and eventually timing out, Maps doesn't load content, Tapatalk throws an error, in short: any online bound activity comes to a halt, despite the connection being "up".
Bad issue: when at some point the timing is really bad, GMail push gets interrupted. Worst issue: GTalk is unable to stay online. Basically whenever I load/bring to foreground GTalk, it has to reconnect. It also loses connection though when in foreground. Wake up the device, GTalk greys out the contact list and first has to reconnect. This can happen after 5 minutes, but also several times within a minute. There is no indication of any interruption or error, data just doesn't flow.
I discussed the issue several times with my providers network engineers, they are unable to help at this point. They observed my device and are happy to report that wherever I was, I had good signal and am usually connected to their HSPA network. No anomalies. The engineer yesterday said they rebooted all antennas around where I am the most, they all rebooted and came back up without any error, so their network seems to be fine, from his perspective. Since it does not only happen to me, but to several friends and relatives, and on several devices, at very different locations (one friend lives 150km away) it must be something they changed in the network. The outages don't happen when connected via WIFI, Talk is rock-solid then, they also don't happen when using another operator. One friend even tested with a pre-pay card from another operator in another country: stable connection, all the time.
So what I'm looking for is some kind of a possibility to collect logs, network data, anything to somehow try to pin down the issue and solve it. It's not like the operator is unwilling to help, he said he is just running out of options. And since it works brilliantly via WIFI, on other operators and did work for years on my operator until last August/September-ish, it must somehow be solvable. It's not the services, it's the network.
Anyone any options or ideas? Maybe an insider which has an idea what it could be?

I have the same problem

Bump
Does anyone know of a possibility to steadily log network connectivity, data streams/flow, network stability or interruptions? It is turning me crazy and I don't know how to help my network provider help me. Duh...
The signal strength indicator will usually change colors when a internet connection is lost or being established. I believe the default colors are green for connected or grey for disconnected. On Motoblur its blue for connected and white for disconnected so the colors may very.
When it drops is the indicator changing colors or is data just dropping?
...not on Samsung-ROM's. The ability is not implemented in Samsung-ROM's.
I was running Cyanogenmod on a DesireZ, where the indicator is implemented. I also suffered the same problem on the DesireZ. The indicator never changed.
As described above, the data connection to the network is up constantly, indicated by a never-changing G, E, 3G or H+ indicator. Signal levels are good or excellent. There is no feedback by the system or obvious indication that the connection is interrupted. I do notice it only by (online) apps suffering a time-out situation, usually only when actually in use and in front. As for example:
- (mentioned) Talk having to re-sign in when being brought to front all couple minutes.
- (mentioned) GMail losing server-connection and push-capability.
- (mentioned) When trying to browse a page in the browser.
- When pulling up a train table on the public transport app.
- When buying a "mobile-ticket" in the same app, often while verifying my CCard details.
- (mentioned) When browsing various forums with Tapatalk.
- Trying to load videos in YouTube app.
Uuuhm... running out of examples
Bought a brand new unlocked Moto Defy and I'm having some WiFi and data connection issues...
To start things off, I cannot get any kind of data on this phone. I'm able to make/receive calls and texts with no problem but when it comes to accessing data, it's a total fail. I've added APN's for ATT (ATT MMS, ATT PHONE, AT&T PTA), switched the 2G/3G/auto under Mobile Network Settings, and I just can't seem to get data working. I get data just fine on my At&t Samsung Focus with WP7.
Secondly, I cannot connect to my WiFi router. I've reset the router numerous times, disabled WPA security, tried different security methods, and it just doesn't want to connect. The network occasionally shows up with great signal strength but soon after disappears. I went to the same room as the router and it shows up. When I tap on it to connect, it shows "connecting" and then "disconnected". I also get a WiFi symbol in the upper left hand corner with a question mark over it.
And to top things off, I can't seem to format my WP7 memory card so I can't even install any apk's or ROMs. For some reason, the 2GB card that supposed to come with this phone wasn't even in the box!
Any ideas? Starting to get frustrated, this is my first android phone (3rd android device, first 2 were tablets) so I'm eager to mess with this thing.
Uploading a short video showing the WiFi problem.
Thank you so much!
Also, running 2.2.2
Anyone?

So I've installed Cyanogenmod 7 and was able to get to the band settings but when I select USA Band, it says "Set [USA Band] Unsuccessful.
I found a working bp_nvm_default folder for ATT, replaced original with that, set permissions, and nothing has changed.
I am at a loss of what to do now. And after installing CM7, I have no signal what so ever.
Please!!!! Any ideas?!?!?
Hello! I've been struggling with this problem for two months already. Basically, when I turn on WiFi tethering it works fine. I get high-speed transfers and well signal strength. However, hotspot becomes unresponsive shortly after screen turns off. Not a single ping can be received. I also noticed, that signal rate drops drastically shortly before it disconnects completely.
This issue stands to all devices I try to use with my OPO - laptops, smartphones etc.
I've already tried:
setting settings put global tether_dun_required 0 on ADB
changing hotspot WiFi frequency
changing hotspot SSID and password
changing battery mode
disabling battery optimization for "Android System" (sadly no Tethering app were found on the list)
I don't use any kind of battery savers. Nor of my Xposed modules should affect system in such a way. My Oneplus is running the latest CM ZNH2KAS3P0, however this problem had been present on previous ROMs already.
Any tips? Thanks in advance
Maybe....
Wifi -> Advanced Wifi Settings -> Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep ?
It's also set to Always, without effect
Encountered similar issue of WIFI from OPO mobile hotspot keep disconnecting. Troubleshot by putting the same SIM card in other phones where there was no such issue, so OPO is the issue here. Tried many suggestions but don't work, until I went to phone "Settings", then "Network & Internet", and lastly went for "Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth" to find this issue fixed finally!
I was curious if anyone else experienced or has familiarity with this issue. I've been dealing with this since I got the phone almost a year ago. Sometimes when my phone has been idling and I return to check something, the data connection will be unusable. The 3G icon will be visible but internet unavailable (4G works fine, but I prefer to have my phone set to 3G only). It's possible to wait 30-60 seconds for the connection to reset itself, or under settings, switching "Cellular data" or Airplane mode also restores it. Aside from that, the connection is mostly reliable & I don't have any usability issues once data has restored.
I've always ran CM & LOS on this phone so I haven't tried using a stock ROM (solution suggested in an older thread... Mobile data cutting out). I've also flashed the latest Lollipop Radio Firmware (fsg & modem). Thanks for any help.
Edit: I think this may have had something to do with visual voicemail being enabled. I've since switched to AT&T where VVM hasn't worked at all (they suggest using their app) and the problem has gone away.
