Linux on Android Ubuntu Gray screen error [SOLVED] - General Topics

Hi.
This problem has been posted many times with no answer provided by anybody.
I'm not allowed to reply to the relevant threads as my post count is too low.
Here are the details of my tablet:
ainol Novo7 Venus running Android 4.2.2, Kernel 3.4.0
Latest version of Complete Linux Installer.
Currently writing this message using Ubuntu 10.10 on the tablet with USB keyboard & mouse using a 3.6 version of Firefox.
Works great, but Firefox is old, and I can't upgrade it on Ubuntu 10.10, so I thought I'd try a newer version of the OS.
I had reservations about how this would go as I've had major problems running anything newer on my desktop machine. I've run Ubuntu 10.10 on that for many years and was very happy with it. That's now running 12.10, using gnome-session-fallback. Unity sucks, and it simply won't work on my desktop.
Back to the Anal; sorry, ainol.
I've tried Archlinux, Debian, Fedora, and they all work to some extent, but the sotware is old. I've tried Ubuntu 12.04, and it appears to work on the surface, but Firefox crashes (Reported by others, but no cure).
I've also tried Ubuntu 13.04, 13.10 and 14.04 and al of them result in the blank gray screen as reported by many others.
I've managed to get around that and solve the gray screen problem on all of them.
The trick is to change the window manager. KDE is the default on all these, as obviously theyv'e discovered that unity doesn't work on tablets. However, KDE doesn't seem to work on a lot of them also judging by the number of people reporting this error.
The best window manager I have found to work is xfce4. It's not installed by default, and neither is my favourite terminal, or text editor.
Amazingly, none of these distributions even have a web browser installed.
If anyone needs help getting xfce4 installed, I'll be happy to provide instructions
In the meantime, good luck
Geoff

Im curious wether or not there is a way for me to have a chrooted ubuntu on my transformer...? I saw something on youtube where they did it on a galaxy 10.1, and in the comments the maker of the video said it does work on the transformer.
But i am curious if anyone has tried it and is certain whether or not it work.
if this method is not possible, are there any other methods with similar results...?

i read that, but dont completely able to understand it... could someone help me out with installing it?
The easist thing is to download Linux Installer off the market. I found that Debian (ARMv5) offers better package choices than Ubuntu (ARMv7) in that case. I have mine running off /data/local/mnt/Linux with Debian stable.

i attempted this, i managed to get debian but it did not have a gui.... How would i go about installing one.?
To get a GUI going that route you basically set it up to use VNC for running X stuff and then connect via an Android VNC client; I don't recall the name of the server but there were multple links on Google when I searched back in September.
I don't personally need X along side Android and the chroot, so I don't have it set up.

[Q] Linux?

I there a linux distro for tabs that will install on this galaxy tab 7 plus? I like to find one that is always kept up to date. I like arch Linux on my PC because you always get to update to the latest packages and desktops. I thought i heard of a Linux for tablets. This is a nice tablet but i'm very disappointed because we was promised ICS and that's why i purchased it but we are still running honeycomb. That not good!
Try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zpwebsites.linuxonandroid
You have to access the GUI using a VNC client, so is a little bit slow, but fully functional. The app will help you with all proper instructions.

WindowsAndroid

The folks over at Socketeq have released WindowsAndroid. It runs natively on your Windows machine, meaning that there is no need for emulation. WindowsAndroid runs on the Windows kernel, instead of the Linux kernel. Currently they are on Android v4.0.3. It's compatible with Vista, Win7, and Win8. Keyboard and Mouse are fully supported. This is the early release, so there might be some bugs.
Normally download is hosted on Socketeq's website, but right now the site is down due to heavy loads. Here is and alternate link if your interested:

I actually read about this today lol
seems pretty cool.
If you want to tinker with it further edit the system/build.prop file in the windowsandroid_root folder and add this line:
ro.sf.lcd_density=120
It will switch the interface to tablet.

[Q] Linux running on OnePlus One with framebuffer or native help

Hello!!
I have an OnePlus One, rooted and with lattest kernel, and android 5.0
what i wat to do is :
Install linux preferably Debian, but any distro is ok.
Native would be the best option so it can acces and use all the hardware.
Or via Linux deply using frambuffer.
I have read a lot, and what i can understand is that with framebuffer i can acces all the hardwarare, like mouse usb keyboard BT sound etc directly. Via vnc if i use an usb mouse y get the mouse pointer and separatly another pointer that is the one in vnc and it lags after the mouse.
I have installed debian in my oneplus one smartphone with Linux Deploy. And with vnc is rather slugish. Via XServer SDL it runs more smooth. But i have read that framebuffer is the fastest way in terms of performance. i have even read that framebuffer will get 3d acceleration and stuff. but i could be wrong.
But everytie i try to run via framebuffer i get a black screen and nothing happens. i have click the option of stop the Android giu.
But then i have to restart the phone to come out of the black screen. and if i have Android running i still get the black screen but i can snap out of it.
I want to use this tablet as my working unit. But i need to have a working linx distro that runs well enough to do all my daily work on it.
I have spend 3 weeks to try to get it to work. and read a lot and so on on my own, but now i need help.
Has anyone sucessfully run linux in OnePlus One?
Any help about how to acomplish this will be really appreciatet.
I thinks this will help a lot of people that want to have a tablet and be able to tun linux and do their everyday work on it.
specially if you travel a lot.
I have write a post very much like this regarding Onda tablet v989. Because it has another hardware. If I can get any of them to work it would be a bliz.
thanks everyone in advance.
I think the first step is to get frame buffer to work , afterwards the rest shoud be easy. I've tried compiling a kernel with fb support , but I have not had any success yet, i'm not even sure whether my device will supports it (Alcatel 918D android 2.3.5) .Building this phones kernel has been a nightmare , but finally I got it to run my own, now i have to figure out how to get Fb on this phone.

i have installed debian sed with the linux deply app. and framebuffer. i get of course black screen, but before when i dropped out of the black screen i see the terminal with different errors.
Bot now i see that framebuffer start ...ok no errors. i even try to run glxgears and i got the terminal telling me is running at about 100 fps. like its running in some monitor that is off.
I try this with my acer pc conected to the tv the tv was off and it was running about 100 fps, when i turn on the tv i saw the gears ans the speed wentdown to normal 60 fps.
So i conclude that in my Oneplus One is also running in some screen. but i get black screen.
Does this help you in any way whatsoever?
i hope we can get frammebuffer to work.
By the way running it trough the framebuffer....wil it go faster than the Xserver SDL?
It seems you‘ve had luck with setting up framebuffer console on your phone, now all you need is a library to enable window applications to access it.
Also you may post some screen shots.
Am on phone ATM, but will give you some hints tommorow.

That's quite the odd issue. Have you asked this in the Bliss OS (x86) thread? https://forum.xda-developers.com/bliss-roms/bliss-roms-development/x86-bliss-x86-pc-s-t3534657
Any Luck?

I have the same issue on my Surface Laptop 2. Every install I try, no matter what it is, I have no keyboard. I am able to plug in a USB keyboard, but as you said, that really doesn't work for me.
Did you find any solutions?? I have no clue what to do. SUCKS not having a keyboard and I'm loving BlissOS.

Unfortunately no, keyboard doesn't work on BlissOS yet.
I asked the developer and he said he would be implementing drivers to make it work
I did get ubuntu to work - You might want to check this out:

I run the linux-surface kernel w/ Ubuntu on my SL3, and it runs great. I’m having issues getting Bliss OS to even boot off the usb; assuming I get it on, is there a way to install the linux-surface kernel in Bliss or would I break everything? It’s been a while since I’ve messed with Android so sorry in advance! (Also with the SL3; the Keyboard, mouse, and touchscreen do not work right off the bat with any linux distro/flavour afaik until you install the linux-surface kernel)
Yes, the easiest way to install the Linux surface modules for android is via gearlock using the gxp files available from gearlock forums. Install both the surface kernel module and the daemon from gearlock recovery menu during android boot up not from within android terminal. Touch screen may not work from every boot has been my only issue.
you can use gearlocks windows advanced android installer to install android and include gearlock from windows as well or install gearlock to most flavours of android x86 after the osnhas been installed.
you are also better off placing any gxp files into the dedicated gearlock folder as thats easily visible to gearlock during recovery
