hi,is there anyway u can up the brightness level on these phones its up full at the moment but still could do with being a bit brighter
Afaik you have to wait for custom roms to get that up'd
Regards Dousan...
e: maybe its enough with a custom kernel...
Well the screen is not that great on our phone which is why we get around 2 days battery life with average use even I would like the screen to be brighter but it will greatly reduce battery life

Have you tried installing dazzle? This app has some niffty display controls for maxing out the brightness.

it all comes down to the fact SE does not allow us to disable auto brightness so even if you "crank" the brightness you still have to live with auto brightness controlling the brightness while settings 1 2 3 on the power control widget appear to turn it up it is still being controlled to an extent..

Will probably at least take a recompile of the kernel.
An answer to this question is in the Arc section, from SE:
A question on how to disable auto-brightness on Xperia PLAY.
Unfortunately, being able to do this from userspace might be non-functional in the released kernel for Play. The engineering team is aware and it is something they are looking into for future releases, can’t comment if it will be supported though yet.
However, if you’re building your own kernel, you can modify the file arch/arm/mach-msm/board-semc_zeus.c
What you’re looking for is the structure “as3676_platform_data”, where you can change the “als_connected = 1” to “als_connected = 0”.

I'm not sure how this would work, but there is a parameter
in /sys/devices/i2c-0/0-0040/leds/lcd-backlight/als/ "enable" which by default is set to "1"
Might want to test something like
echo "0" > /sys/devices/i2c-0/0-0040/leds/lcd-backlight/als/enable
You need to be root to do this

I think it will be set back on reboot, but it may work to add that line to /etc/hw_config.sh
yeah doesnt remain after reboot, will add later and see if it works.
It's not something that bothers me tbh.

Nor me.
The auto brightness is actually pretty awesome in all fairness. I am going to leave mine on even when a fix comes out for it.
News for brightnes controll ?
Hi,
You would have probably come across apps to adjust display brightness by applying a "filter" on the screen, e.g. Screen Filter - does anyone know how to develop an app like this?
I have searched high and low, and cant find out how to get started - any help would be amazing.
Thanks.
Im interested in this topic too Im currently developing an app where the app is active 5-10 min, and its not suitable to let the lockscreen be active. However, its likely that users, and the battery, wants to dim the brightness down, say 50%. But i cant find a way to programaticly to that. Is this so called screenfilter the solution?
Hey, I dont think this is what you are looking for pippi - this Screen Filter app is used to lower brightness beyond what the phone normally allows.
Its probably something like this you need to code...
"WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = getWindow().getAttributes();
lp.screenBrightness = 100 / 100.0f;
getWindow().setAttributes(lp);"
Can anyone help me with my question? thanks...
Aha, thank you very much! Ill look at that tomorrow, got some stuff to do before new years eve, cheers!
If I want to lets say never want the brightness to go below 10% with automatic brightness how do I do this? I want it to play within 10-100% brightness and never let it go to 0%. I am surprised no android phone has such a useful feature built in where we could manually set upper and lower parameters for auto brightness.
I am running stock rooted rom.
Can't with stock ROM as far as i'm aware, however many ROMs have exactly this feature and you can fine tune it as delicate and precisely as you like. I believe most of them have the settings in the Display area in the settings. Excellent feature that should definitely be a part of the stock ROM (simple presets and advanced tuning would be quite awesome for stock).

I can see more people breaking stuff there rather than fixing it. The autobrightness works decently on 4.0.4, only wish it was smoother by default.
My only problem with auto brightness is when it starts up it can take seconds to brighten up. I dont understand why it must start from 0% every single time I am indoors. I think it should wake up on the last setting and then lower it if needed, that would have been much better.
On GB it used to stay at 0% even in a rather well lit room but on ICS it goes to 10% in my room. It's just that the whole waking up at 0% is still really annoying.
Man custom rom I am not sure I am interested in them yet. Is there no app that can do it?
Way too bright. Never remembers my preferences. Every time I turn in the screen, even in a dark room, brightness us 50%. I'm constantly turning it down but it goes back up.
How can I fix this? I refuse to believe my only option is a third party brightness app.
-EDIT- Here's the solve:
Just go to apps>settings>applications>application manager>more>reset apps preferences. This clears out any personalized brightness settings. This worked immediately.
Well turn auto brightness off.

You know that's not a solution...
Yes that is, you set the brightness the level you want, manually.

No. I want auto brightness to adjust to the ambient light. That's the point of auto brightness. 50% brightness in a movie theatre means something isn't working right. And the S7 auto brightness is supposed to be personalized to the user but obviously this isn't working either.
Mine is working just fine in any ambient, I don't know what settings you mess up with.

I don't know! users are prone to do such a thing when they mess up with their phone.
Make a backup, reset your phone and try again. Mine still works just fine.
alright, smart alecs. Just talked to Samsung Support. Just simply go to apps>settings>applications>application manager>more>reset apps preferences. This seemed to fix it. The tech said sometimes carrier updates can corrupt settings. So that's neat...

How do you mess up with app manager?
Installing stuff on your smartphone!
So...
Users are prone to do this. Again mine and everybody's else are working just fine.

Every time you install an app on your phone they change something. Some times are nothing important, other times they mess with the whole system settings.
Glad your settings are working now.
Actually i had the same problem when i got the phone, did a bit of search n found it has a smart brightness feature.
You have to choose ur brightness level according to the ambient light in the room cuz it remembers each time you set the brightness level according how much light the sensor is picking.
Short answer, keep changing the level of brightness for couple days until it learns the new levels.

Ya I did all of that and it wasn't adjusting to my preferences. That's was the problem. Resetting as described fixed it as it relearned my preferences

When I'm outdoor in extreme sunlight the phone's brightness goes all the way up and then it enters a mode where colours seems washed out. But only if the light is very strong. Does your S7 behave the same?
I may have to give that app settings reset a try. At first the auto function seemed fine. As time passed it grew worse. However, mine would be too dark in dimly lit situations and semi-acceptable in bright conditions. I finally turned off automatic as it was extremely annoying and almost always incorrect.

Yes. That's a special boost mode I think. Without it the screen wouldn't get bright enough to see well.
Hi all.
Is it me or the auto brightness of Pie works way worse compared to Oreo' one?
Too much bright inside, too much dark outside.
Just my impressions. Your thoughts?
Hints / Suggestions?

Definately worse that Oreo. The pie stable was just a rushed update
For me, the auto brightness initially was working on the extreme ends on pie, but after constantly adjusting it to suit my needs, adaptive brightness has worked it's magic and now for me works exactly as I'd want it to work.

Do you mean it is an official documented / mentioned feature the fact that leaving adaptive brightness on and still manually correct it, will lead in time to system recognizing your needs and slowly adjust accordingly?
Or is it something we're just guessing?

It is something that I have experienced after the update to pie.
The Pie update is just a friggin mess. Horrible brightness, time zone changing, bank apps not working, future alarm notifications, awful interface with the info cards and pull down menu notifications, websites loading strange, developer options nested in another settings menu, less options in the settings area, phone dialer button is green... I rolled back to 5.1.11 because of all the hassle.
And yes, I have bug reports and yes, I even tried it with a full wipe and fresh flash of 9.0. Between Google's design choices and the bugs, Pie is awful.
It has always been really bad for me.... Too dark all the time.... it doesn't really respond accurately and fast enough....

WTF ls the point have having Auto brightness if you need to set it manually for a little while? This is just a bad excuse for a poorly see everyone's feature. Nobothern9honebhas this issue and even on Oreo it wasn't an issue

Go and read about it, ask google. I think now its called adaptive auto brightbess or smntg like that, just use it adjusting just will help it for auto feature to give the best screen brightness. Not everyone sees the same in the same light conditions. So this new adaptive brightness in pie is aiming to that. By adjusting it to your needs how u see it better in different light conditions it just helps phone to learn about everyones different vision/seeing levels.
But it just my opinionl

I have read about it and apparently it's a WIP. Doesn't make sense to put a WIP feature in a stable build. Don't get me wrong I love the OP6 and the pie release is ok but it was very much rushed out. They should have taken there time and released a pie build that was perfect. Beta builds should be used to make changes and fixes.
