[Q] Terrible Battery Life After Root - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently rooted my Nexus 5 and flashed stock clockworkmod. Since doing that I have noticed my battery is dying incredibly fast. I could get through a whole day on a full charge and now it's down to about half that. According to the battery stats the screen and system is taking up the most time. The screen has been on 2 hours and only been off charger for 6 and the battery is currently at 20%. I have tried a few battery calibration apps and such but nothing seems to fix the problem. Had a similar problem with the Samsung GS3 after rooting...any tips to get better battery life after root and not worse? Thanks!
P.S. Also been running greenify root for apps that don't need constant internet access.

Many users claim to get great battery life with the Franco Kernel. They say its better than stock.
Disclaimer: I'm 100% stock and unrooted so I can't vouch.

I think I would reset back to out of the box and start over. My experience has been the opposite. I did everything with Wugs nexus root toolbox ,its near dummy proof for guys like me

For us to help you post screenshots of your better battery stats logs.
Which method did you use for root? I don't think rooting actually causes a drain in battery life but I could be wrong

Just rooting won't have any impact on battery. Could be apps that you installed.

Had the same issue as well with Franco kernel. Started from scratch, meaning unroot, lock. Then unlocked and rooted again. Performed factory reset and installed app by app. Took a few days but battery life is good now.

try to use franco r32.

Download wake lock dectector and see if you have got any ridiculous wakelocks. That's usually the issue with horrible battery life.

Updated to ICS, lost hours of battery life?

I have updated to the official ICS (AT&T) and now I'm no longer getting much battery life. I had some issues with the update, so I wiped my phone and I have little to no apps.
I used to get 10+ hours of battery life, and now I don't even get 8 idle hours (so now it doesn't even last the work day). I checked Battery Usage after it was down to 20% and cell standby took up 90% of battery life.
I used to run JuiceDefender, but I reinstalled it on ICS.
Why have I lost so much battery life; how can I fix this?

I have noticed the same thing on the stock ICS. Also noticed very slow charge times using USB (possibly true with A/C charging but I am normally asleep when I charge with A/C).
Is this just caused by the bloat that they put in? I want to flash a custom ROM just for battery life at this point.

install sky ics rom , this is the best battery . you can easy use more than 15hours . nexus mod 5.04 is also good . and much easier for noob to install . stock sucks .

Instigator's kernel is for AOSP (CM9/AOKP) so for ICS based official or roms you will need a different one such as mohan's kernel:

As for battery loss, there are some cases where if the flash wasnt done with 100% battery it could be reading the battery wrong and some people have had success with recalibrating their battery (look up battery calibration on play store). Now it was said that it really doesnt do anything for battery improvements and was just for stats use or whatever but for some people it helped their devices read the right battery stats.

[Q] Battery Issues

Hi everyone, might of had this before but everyones seems to be a little different
I have the Galaxy i5800, (Galaxy 3/Apollo) and it was always fantastic, battery life, lag-free for the whole year i've had it.
I am running the Kyrillos' rom v10.6 which is CM7.2 based.
Since a few weeks ago, the battery has just been draining, like a hour of battery life even just in sleep mode, i have wiped Battery Stats, Cache (partition and the dalvik one), Factory Reset, pretty much everything in recovery mode. charged battery for 6-9 hours overnight from 0%. no difference, will still just drain drain drain.
Also, if you use the phone for a good 5 - 10 minutes doing for instance browsing the internet (Opera Mini) the phone will just turn off instantly (possible overheating CPU?)
I am not using GPS Wi-Fi, sometimes not even data network (3G). i don't understand how the battery is draining so fast, i have tried stock
2.1 and 2.2 roms and the same thing happened with those.
is it a problem with the phone (CPU or whatever) or the actual battery?
Sorry for the ramble but just wondered if the good lads on XDA could help! Thanks.
I too had the same issue, its due to your battery perhaps I changed my battery and now battery life is great(by great I mean 3 days approx)

me too, help
i using CM7.2...this error: (
i've just bought a new charger and battery, the charger has already come, and for some reason battery has already increased haha!
got them both for under ten pounds altogether from amazon, really pleased with that
also flashed the phone back to stock 2.2 JPU firmware! can't complain really, might root it at some point but not too sure as i'm getting a nexus 4 when come back in stock!!
i will just use this phone as a backup phone or phone for download festival !
That may be a problem of battery as I changed by battery to a new one then it works awsm.....
From my awsm Galaxy 3.....
sounds like a problem with the battery.
it happened to me because of overflashing during development work.
replacing battery worked awesome!!
the battery is pulling out 1.5 to 2 days with wifi on half of the time

[Q] Can S-Off; Root affect battery life?

Did the S-Off; Custom Recovery; Permanent Root last night. Everything went fine, rebooted after everything was done and charged my phone to 100%.
Wake up this morning after not touching the phone for 8 hours and the phone lost 30% over night. Looking at the battery stats the Kernel (Android OS) took up 60% of the battery. Wakelock Detector is showing Google Search as a wakeup trigger 92 times.
Before this whole process I was averaging 5-6 hours of screen on time, anybody else seeing some weirdness going on with their battery life?

Root and S-Off alone? No. Mods/tweaks that require root? Yes.
Can Google search be a random wakelock sometimes for seemingly no reason? Absolutely.

No I will look around for that though and see what it's about.
I've been rooting my phones since the Thunderbolt and I'm my opinion/experience nothing is better than stock. Once I started messing with Kernels, custom recoveries, Roms, "tweaks" ect...battery seems to be affected big time. Maybe its things I do as I'm not an expert at any of this and by no means am I trying to bash on devs for the work they do but that has just been my personal experience.

FWIW I didn't experience any sort of battery drain with the temp root before we got S-Off.
root and s-off will not affect battery. Xposed modules, root apps, and other mods can. I have about 6 or so xposed modules running and I still get way, way over 1.5 days of battery life. I had 2 hours of screen on time and my phone used 55% in 1.5 days so.... its pretty good. Check to make sure google now isnt causing wakelocks, turn off location reporting and if you can, turn off google now completely. I really only used it for weather because I don't see much other functionality with it.

I haven't added any apps since running the temp root when I was getting great battery life.
I did the s-off, recovery, and root...uninstalled Verizon bloat and that's it.
Lost 30% over night last night. I drained the battery to 1% last night, turned phone off and charged to 100%, unplugged and didn't touch it....woke up to 70% battery life.

I've had both of those running since the temp. root. which screens will give you the best idea of what is going on?
I did flash the insecure kernel earlier this afternoon, and turned off google now.
If anything try a factory reset. It should definitely help.

Most s-off will turn on debug process.
return s on state after you have done modes or you need many tweaks in further.

My battery life on WiFi has gotten much better but on the cell radio, it's just terrible. On NB1, I was getting right around 3 hrs screen on time with LTE, now I'm barely getting 2 hrs. On WiFi, I'm getting 4.5 hrs. A little frustrating when there's no WiFi available.

Battery life has been the biggest issue here since the update to Kitkat . I have a Hyperion Extended battery on my S4 . The thing barely lost battery life no matter how much hell I put the battery through . Since the jump to Kitkat it has been been reduced . Granted the extended battery gets me through the day but even I am feeling the reduction in life .

agree - but I found today phone started acting really sluggish and freezing.
Guess what it turns out to be the damn SD card - it's an old microSD from my epic4g. Took it out and voila - phone is lightning fast.
Moral of the story - sluggish phone? TRy removing the SD CARD
My battery live has decreased pretty dramatically since the kitkat updates. I tried to odin back to stock NB1 and retok the NC1 update but nothing changed. Also swapped batteries thinking maybe the battery had an issue but no change. I hope they release a new update soon that helps with this. Standy uses a little more than JB but when I am on LTE it drains really quickly!
I read somewhere that when you update, you gotta let the kernel settle in for a day or two (maybe more).
NC1 contained a new kernel.
Right now I'm running a custom ROM (but with another base), but the kernel is stock NC1.
Long story short: with power saving mode on and all connectivity off (wi-fi, 3G, Bluetooth, GPS) off, for 8 hours the thing lost 1% battery.
But, alas, some one hour of browsing on wi-fi, and it fell down to 88%.
Don't ye worry, folks! Graphene batteries will hit the market in several years, and our phones will last a week on a single charge with heavy use, and the charging time itself will be 5 minutes!
(Or at least that's what the science news tells us. )

You're complaining about nearly 2 days of battery life with a few hours of screen time? ....... You might want to reconsider what good battery life is. It's not a Nokia 3210.

Yeah You Are Right It's not a Nokia 3210.But Past Update NB1 Kitkat It Stands Nearly 3.5 Days Then Screen Time Is Around 3.5 hours -- 4 hours

But I thought...
From everything I have read about Kitkat it was supposed to increase batter life take less RAM and CPU ect. Kinda like Windows 98 was . I have messed around with it on my PC in the X86 download. Its pretty sweet there but on a High-end 6-Core PC I'm not surprised. Has any one had a positive experience?
When a root method is discovered will it be worth it to upgrade or would you go back if you could.
One recommendation. I haven't used many Samsung Devices as this is my first. However I have use many other and I know when a new OTA comes out if your battery isn't fully charged at the time of update as well as plugged in. You might have caused the battery info to be incorrect. A battery calibration would do the trick. If your don't have root its not the easiest task.
You will have to recharge the phone with the power off. After a full charge power up. Use the phone till it powers down all by itself. Repeat the process 1 to 2 more times. Then your phone should have a calibrated battery.
I don't plan on upgrading at this time so if this helps please let people know.
I have used this on LG's Motorola's and several China Tabs. Some people don't want root but I help them as best I can with there issues.
Good Luck

That's fantastic battery life for this phone in general... let alone any of the baseband versions... I've found on NC1, that I am indeed getting better battery life, and it's a hell of alot snappier as well...
Mind you, I also tweak the snots out of it... for instance, I get rid of all samsung & AT&T bloatware, I get rid of TouchWiz (due to it being such a memory hog.... thus a big battery drainer)
I then go an install Greenify, and Tasker to set a task to hibernate almost everything including most system apps whenever my screen timesout (or I lock it)
I haven't had a chance to really test out how good the battery life is now, due to themeing, getting up to a NC1 Rom, and getting it setup, etc... but once I get a chance I'll post some results

This really isn't a good idea with these batteries, as you can dramatically decrease the battery life overall. They weren't meant for things like this. Instead a better idea would be to root, and find a re-calibrater in the play store... just my opinion.

Need some help with battery drain please.

Hello,
I have owned a note 2 and 3 and quite a few Android phones before that. I know how to disable features running in the background to get good battery life out of them. My notes had amazing battery life.
I have applied the same settings to my note sm n915fy and the battery is pretty poor. As soon as I take it off charge it immediately drops to 99% then down to about 70 in 5 hours while I'm asleep. I have brightness to 25% with sync disabled, a jet black background and all Samsung features switched off. Saying that I still seem to get a lot if push notifications in the Background.
I bought this phone from someone and never doe a reset when I got it, I just made a google account up.
I have not rooted yet, I am waiting for more roms to appear before I consider this.
I would appreciate so etc help on this please.
Cheers.
I found 2 issues that were killing my battery: s-health and the unified daemon. I think UD is used to track location for the weather display on the edge screen. Anyway, disabling both of them gave me good battery life. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the reply.
I done a factory restore which seems to have helped a bit. I will try disabling UD to see if it helps more.
Cheers.
how is the battery life now?
are you on kitkat or jellybean?
my battery life became awful since the kitkat upgrade. what I did was to downgrade back to jellybean. now battery life is a little better. because it doesn't drain a lot when idle. but it's unstable and the percentage is not steady. sometimes it drains fast and sometimes not. crazy phone.
