[Q] How do I block OTA udate notification - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm sorry if this has already been posted, I did try to find it, but how do I block the notifications for the latest OTA update? I'm tired of staving it off daily and eventually, I'm bound to accidentally install it. My phone is rooted, but no custom roms. Everything functions fine, so I'd rather not mess with an update and have to reroot. Plus, as I understand it, I'd lose the option to install a custom rom later on. Unless there is something I'm not understanding. Please advise. Thanks.

You have to freeze sdm1.0 and rename fwupdater.apk to fwupdater.apk.bak. Then the nagging will stop and won't update.

I just updated my rooted Epic via OTA and it went through without any problems. I've also confirmed that I'm still rooted.
I've read that if you have removed any Sprint apps after rooting you might have errors during the updates.
BTW....my root method was performing the one click method shown in the sticky forum.

So many threads about this already but it all depends on what root method you have installed. IF you have noobls kernel then you must return to stock if you have joey 2.2.4 then just run the update
yah i got some errors during the update.... what should i do?
i deleted a few sprints apps.
You need to restore most of the stock Sprint apps you removed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8185259&postcount=47
Here's instructions how.
Yeah I tried to update.. It was the samsung media hub update. Is that the update u were getting?
I did the kernal update.. so I guess I got to get it back to stock... I'm not looking forward to it because I had a hard time flashing it. But its ok...

To Root or not to Root?

I'm getting my Mom a Skyrocket for Xmas. I'm going to set it up for her. I would like to remove some of the ATT junk. That would require root. But when ICS comes, I would like her to be able to get the update OTA without any problems. She lives 600 miles away and I can't just fix things for her easily.
If I root and then unroot, will she be able to gt OTA updates?
yes if you unroot you can recieve the update. even if your rooted but have stock recovery you should be able to recieve the update.. you must have stock recovery

So if I just root for su access. Then install a few apps that require superuser to install but not run, then uninstall root I should be OK. But I could also leave root maybe?
So we can root, delete bloat ware then unroot?
you may not be able to take and ota update if u deleted bloat... you can root and freeze your bloat then if theres an ota update unfreeze and take teh update. as long as you have stock recovery..

You missed a step
1) Root
2) Uninstall Bloatware
3) Install my own Bloatware
4) Unroot
I'm hoping that will work.
Or maybe leave root in place?
Silver03wrx is one of the best sources of help skyrockets have right now.
You only need stock recovery and bloatware means, you only need stock recovery and bloatware.
So freeze it, don't uninstall it. Anything that needs to be flashed by cwm, don't. Do it manually as cwm replaces stock recovery.
Aside from those, do whatever you want. Just make sure if any over the air updates come out, all the apps are unfrozen first or it can cause issues and/or no allow the update to install.
Play around with droidvnc. It allows remote connection to an Android. Let's you do remote assistance. Can be slow, but sometimes, most the time, faster than our parents.

I'm new here, what does freezing do? I've seen it in Titanium. Won't the app still show in the appz menus?

no. thats the point of freezing. it wont show up in app drawer or run in background if its a service....from looking at your phone, it wont appear that its installed, however, the files are still there in case you need to defrost them later on for some service that Samsung requires for an OTA (over the air)
if you uninstall, you are REMOVING the files from /system/apps/ and we dont know how that will react to an OTA at this point.
Hi, sorry to re-open an old thread but I too am a new android user and was wondering about the future ICS update for our skyrockets.
The words that keep repeating in this post are "freeze bloatware" and "stock recovery" in order to get the official ICS update.
I rooted my phone and used bloat freezer free found in the app market to freeze a bunch of bloat and installed wifi tether for root users. Does this mean I still have "stock recovery"?
Sorry- I've been an iphone user for the past 4 years (since nearly the first day it came out) and i'm not familiar with all the android terms yet. thanks!
You would know if u had stock recovery. Because you would have had to flash cwm recovery tar with odin or installed it with rom manager. If u did not do eiher of those yes you have stock recovery
Is there a way to get root access without installing CWM? I thought that was the only way to install the superuser file?

How the heck do I stop OTA update?

I have fwupgrade frozen but the update popped up wanting to install, I deferred it but I want to disable it so it can't check either. thanks

Flash a custom recovery/ROM. That should do it
But I'm not sure what else if the fwupgrade freeze didn't work
Yes. How do I stop this crap!?
I have 2 of these both rooted and hers keeps trying to install it. Its already downloaded on hers. I interrupted mine by killing the internet connection as soon as I saw it start downloading.
I'm sure when I'm sleeping it will try to install itself. So ill just shut my phone off.
Grr...
I'm running nosymathy rom with CWM installed and unlocked bootloader. The verizon update downloaded and prompted to install which I deferred for an hour. Not sure if the update will simply fail because I froze fwupgrade or not but I don't want to take the chance and I want to stop OTA completely so it doesn't even check.

Thats an issue with no-sympathy.... Most ROM's block the OTAs so you don't even need to worry about them.
This is actually the first ROM i've heard of that allows OTA's to even show up on the prompts.
Cmon no one knows how to prevent OTA prompts? How is it done in other ROMs?

You would have to ask the ROM's developers. Refuse it, and flash to another ROM that does it automatically for you. Obviously No Sympathy didn't think of an OTA... whynot I dunno. But every other developer did.

Just flash a custom recovery - ota updates can't install through a custom recovery so the furthest it gets onto your phone is in the /cache directory limbo.

[Q] Want to stop 4.4 update.

I want to root my Verizon GS3, so that I can stop the future update to 4.4, so that i don't lose my FoxFi. These 100+ pages is a bit overwhelming to read through.
I am on build number JSS15J.I535VRUCML1. Could someone please point me in the right direction?

Let me correct you first by saying that the update you're trying to stop is 4.3, NOT 4.4.
4.3 is Jellybean. 4.4 is KitKat, which has not been officially released for our phones.
If you want to root and disable the OTA update, all you need to do is disable the "SDM" app. It has a green logo, and is the OTA utility. You disable that, and your phone won't search for an update until you re-enable it.
No correction necessary. I already have 4.3, and FoxFi works fine on Jellybean. It will not however, work on KitKat or 4.4, which is why i want to disable the "future update" since it is all but confirmed that we will see KitKat on the S3.
With regards to disabling(force stopping) the SDM app, will it not restart itself each time i restart my phone? I thought I had seen a recommendation like that before, but it wasn't permanent. I apologize If i am incorrect in my understanding, and if that is all it takes to avoid OTA's, well then that's just awesome.

In the OP, or first post, is a link for saferoot. You can follow that guide to root your stock 4.3 phone. Once you have rooted, get titanium backup from the playstore and use it to freeze the apps SDM 1.0 and FWUpgrade. Done.

Does Foxfi only not work because they have not added support or is there something inherently wrong with 4.4.
I would wait until 4.4 OTA comes out before trying to worry about disabling it. You can then check if Foxfi works.

I think it's a great idea disabling updates, you can always re-enable at any time, then you wouldn't have to worry about them sneaking up on you.
Who knows, maybe the next update will block saferoot or safestrap access. Then you'd be happy you disabled the update in the first place.

Actually it is the FoxFi app itself that lets me know that it will not work on KitKat. They recommend not updating.
I may, in fact, wait another month or so to see if they figure out a solution, but I want to have my ducks in a row now so as not to be surprised. That, and I cant imagine what the update would bring that would make it even necessary.
Would have skipped the last update if it weren't for the ability to move apps to SD card.
Thanks for the suggestions, Ill go check out that thread, which has over 100 pages, and the the other thread it takes you to which has more than 20 pages.
I assume that when you say SafeRoot, landshark68, you are referring to the SafeStrap recovery on this page
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2605648
And that is considered rooting? And from there I can disable the Update app. Am I correct in this?
Edit> nevermind, I now see the link for Saferoot. which also has more than 100 pages.

Lmao wow. That's the most pitiful update ever. Seriously, couldn't they have waited until there was something more substantial and then included Canadian roaming in THAT update. As always though, Verizon is dumber than a bag of hammers...

i was so sure this was a KK upgrade. been looking around for how to retain root if you take it. thanks for the info!
Hey guys, I have a question about this update,
My friend has the S3 for whom I safe- rooted, debloated and whatnot. Now that this update came, my friend tried to update but to no avail. She is adamant about the fact that Verizon definitely has something important hidden in the update, despite me trying to tell her otherwise, and figured that she couldn't install the update because she was rooted.
Naturally, I fully unroot her entire phone, uninstall root-only apps, and try the update, but it doesn't work. When the phone reboots for installation, the installation bar loads for a bit, hangs, then just says "error" and does not update.
Anyone know what the problem could be? Normally I wouldn't care so much, but if Android 4.4 is actually coming to the S3 then I don't want her not to have it, and I can already tell it's not going to work if this update doesn't either.
Thank you so much in advance.

Some of the bloatware you removed likely had to be present on the phone in order for the update to take place. Unless you are sure someone is never going to go back to stock without flashing an ODIN tar image and wiping their phone clean, best to just freeze bloatware with Titanium Backup. That way you can just unfreeze it in order to go back to full stock. Unless you have a list of the bloatware you removed and can somehow sideload them back in, you will unfortunately have to flash her phone to full stock VRUCML1 and wipe it clean.

Ah, I see, next time I'm around her I'll re-root it and backup all her stuff with titanium backup, flash the VRUCML1 and factory reset, then restore everything and see if it works.
Strangely enough, when the same update for my Verizon Note 2 came out, I was able to update while rooted even though I unsinatalled theexact same system apps I did on her phone. How strange.
Nonetheless, thank you so much.
I have a question for you all. I took the OTA update for 4.3 when it came out but after that I rooted my gs3 Verizon phone again successfully. Now I also took this last update and now lost root on my phone. I tried to reroot the phone but it fails now. There error I get on safestrap is something about the addresses not being able to be found. Can anyone help me reroot my phone so my apps like titanium will work again?
Thanks
