USB Tethering? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have this wireless charger thing and it is supposed to charge it fully. But I can't! I can actually plug it in, use the phone while its charging and LOSE battery... So I think I need USB tethering to make it charge. Because it did work before but it stopped since I changed my ROM.
I have stock now, with root, and GravityBox. I looked for the USB tethering option and wanted it to appear in the quick settings box in the notification bar, and it doesn't show for some reason...
So can I do something about it?
Thanks!

can anyone help?

Why don't you plug the phone into the charger provided through an outlet?
And as far as I know of, USB tethering is supposed to allow you to access your files on the computer, not enable wireless charging -_-

to bei60
your problem is kind of confusing. what you want to do?
usb tethering? yes/no
charging through usb port? yes/no
fyi
when you are usb tethering, you can not browse your files in nexus 5.
usb tethering only shows up on the notification bar when in use.
while usb tethering, the phone slowly recharges.

Syncing but not charging

Recently my TC2 has stopped charging from the USB connected to the computer. It is recognised and still syncs. When I do it from a plug direct, or from car charger, it charges?
I am using MS Vista, so could it be a "fix" that has been automatically downloaded or is it a problem with the device? I have checked the cable, replaced it, and moved it to a differnet USB port but to no avail. I have also checked the ports in device manager and they all appearto be running correctly.
Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks
In your power settings have you got "when device is turned on do not charge battery when connected to pc" make sure it's not checked.
Doh! How simple I don't know how I missed that.
Thanks very much for that meknb.

Notifications/Charging Questions

Hi all,
Just got my Infinity+dock, and I have a few questions:
(1) With the dock connected, there is a persistent notification of "Docking connected". It's quite obvious to me that the dock is connected: I can see it, I can see that the dock battery is charging, I have a mouse pointer, etc., so I don't really need this notification. However, I can't figure out how to turn it off.
(2) Similar to #1, with my MicroSD card connected, there is a persistent notification of "External storage inserted". Again, I know it's inserted, I put it in there. Is there any way to turn this notification off as well?
(3) I am having an issue charging the tablet and/or the dock via the included USB cord. If I plug the cord into a different wall unit or into my computer, the USB won't charge. (However, I know that it works because I've successfully connected the tablet to the computer.) The only time I can successfully charge anything is if I use the included wall unit. I would appreciate some help, as I can't see why a different wall unit or my computer won't charge the tablet/dock.
Thanks in advance!

(1) and (2)
- go into settings menu and click on ASUS customized menu
- Scroll down and to Use ASUS Quick Setting and uncheck the box
- Now click in the bottom right of the screen to bring up the quick menu
- With the quick menu up, click anywhere in the top portion of the menu (where you see the time/day/date/wifi/battery) and this will expand the menu vertically
- Toggle notifications to OFF
* keep inn mind this will also turn off notifications for emails/sms....
(3)
I only use the included wall charger so i cant comment on other wall unit charger. As far as charging via USB, no issues here using the included USB cable. Any chance you can trying another USB cable or trying a different USB port on the computer?

hhhhmmm...just notice the following
The tablet does not charge via USB to computer, it only connects to allow transfer of files between tablet and computer. The tablet only charges if:
1. USB cable is plugged into wall charger unit and connect tablet or tablet with keyboard dock
2. If tablet is docked the keyboard and plugged into computer via USB.....however, only the tablet charges.

Your comment about (1)(2) is not true. This will not get rid of the persistent notification at all. The only way I am aware to get rid of them is with some custom roms. I can not comment on the third part though. I do not have knowledge in that area.

Actually, it *does* get rid of the notifications for the dock and SD card. Problem is (as the OP states) that it stops *ALL* notifications, which makes it a not-so-desirable "solution" to the problem...
Trust me - I just tried it and the keyboard and SD icons disappear completely...

The notifications:
I would have never in a million years found that setting. However, turning off the notifications didn't turn off the "docking connected" and "external storage inserted" notifications. I tried restarting but still no dice.
Charging:
I only have the USB cable that comes included with the tablet. I tried different USB ports, but I can try other computers. However, I had a thought: the best computer I have only has USB 2.0; maybe USB 3.0 is required to charge the tablet?
It still doesn't explain why it won't charge if I plug the cord into a different wall unit: for instance, an Apple wall unit or a 4-USB wall unit that I have.

I wonder why it worked for you but not for me. Regardless, it's not that big of a bother that I'd want to do something so drastic as getting rid of ALL notifications...

Tablet requires 15V(correct me if I'm wrong) which is supplied by Asus accessory wall plug.
Computer's USB ports does not supply enough voltages to charge the tablet, however I haven't tried USB 3.0 port to charge the tablet it might work but I highly doubt it will.

New modal dialog appears when connected to USB in car

Ever since the Oreo update my phone displays a modal dialog when I connect to the USB port in my Subaru for charging. The dialog suggests that the phone resources can't be accessed and that I should download a samsung app (the one you use to port data to a new phone). All I want is to charge the phone like I've been doing for the past 6 months. It's inconvenient because I have to wake up the phone and hit OK to dismiss the dialog box. Is there any way to tell the phone to just use the USB for charging only by default? I tried changing to charge phone only in the drop down notification panel but it doesn't stick for the next session. I looked through the very extensive list of settings and couldn't find anything relevant. I know that I could try to find a cable that offers charging only or perhaps connect the phone to a cigarette style charger. These are inconvenient as I already have the appropriate USB-C cable and charging port. Am I missing the setting or solution? Thank you.
Here is a picture of the annoying message that recently appeared on my phone after updating the OS. The message appears when connecting my phone to my car's USB port for charging. Does anyone know how to stop this message from coming up? Thanks.
Have you tried plugging it in, acknowledging the popup, then switching usb mode to charge-only? It should remember that mode for future plug-ins.

I get that same message when I plug into the airplane media system USB to charge. I just switch USB option to charge and it goes away.

I tried the same thing to see if it would work and it doesn't save your preference. Tested via both the notification and via developer options.

Yes, good suggestion. I tried that but the setting isn't sticky (it asks everytime).

Yes, extra fiddling with my phone in this way is inconvenient and unsafe while driving.
It is a rather inconvenient, and annoying, situation.

One of the things that bugs me about Samsung is that the number of settings available are enormous but many don't work the way I want.
This seems like a simple problem that was recently introduced. I guess I need a charging only cable....

Can't connect to Windows 10 PC?

For some reason I can't connect my Pixel 4a to my PC with a USB C - USB A cable (or USB A - USB C, not sure what the official name is) , even though it worked fine on my previous phone.
Included with the phone is a USB C - USB A adapter, but I see no use for it unless you have a special USB A cable which I don't.
My motherboard does have a USB C slot on it and it does read my phone when I plug it in that way but for some weird reason it's really loose and doesn't stay connected unless I keep physical pressure on it.
I'm not going to update to Android 11 until the November update because I've heard the current build has a few bugs, but does anyone know if Android 11 fixed the USB C - USB A issue?
Have you made sure to switch to file transfer mode? It defaults to 'no transfer' mode when I plug into my laptop.
Most likely you need to toggle the phone connection settings to data transfer, originally it will be set to charge only I think.

I had this issue too. Windows file explorer would just crash after one or two files and stop transfer, no matter the size and type. (Yes I had file transfer selected on my phone ?)
Then windows update gave me a driver called "Google Inc. - Other Hardware - Kedacom KDB Composite Interface". I also updated to the newest firmware on the phone. No idea which of these did the trick or if it was the combo. However. Smooth sailing now ??
Hope this helps
(If windows update refuses to give you the driver, you can get it from Microsoft's update catalogue online. A Google search will do)
Ok it's completely messed up. When I search for USB settings it doesn't let me change anything at all, even though when I first got the phone I could and I changed it to transfer files. EDIT: No actually the setting that I changed was a developer option called "Default USB configuration" which I changed to transfer files but that still did nothing.
I just plugged in my phone and looked for the USB setting in the notification area but it wasn't there, but I noticed an option called "manage"
I went in there and noticed this. (see attachments) it's locked to be off and I can't change it. Very odd.

You're in notification settings. Try short tapping rather than long tapping to get the menu to pop up allowing you to select data transfer.
Changing default USB settings in developer options doesn't work for me either.

My point is that the notification that normally comes up when you plug in your phone to a computer to change to data transfer, charge only ect ect isn't even coming up because the firmware is stopping that notification from coming up altogether and I can't change it so it does.

Almost certainly a cable or host port issue. Swap cables and see what happens. Same for hosts/host ports. You're not going to have toggling options if the phone does not 'see' all expected lines/pins.
I had the same issue and changed to a different cord to fix the problem.
You have an non certified cable it seems, I've confirmed this pixel 4a works with only certain cables for usb transfer, also the usb a to c cable you have will not charge the device as well.
Get a cable from know manufacturers like Samsung, it worked for me.
Yeah turns out it was a cable. Strange how my cable worked with my old phone but not with the Pixel 4a
Had this issue with my new 4a just now. Cable was fine, even used the new cable that comes with it using a Usb C to Usb A adapter. Nothing worked. Upon opening Device Manager I found a new device called 'Kedacom USB Device'. After trying random things, I decided to uninstall the current drivers by right clicking on it and clicking 'Uninstall device'. Suddenly the phone connected, and even showed the adb prompt.
So for anyone still facing this issue, hopefully this solution might help

no usb file transfer option when connecting my fold 2 to pc or mac. only charging.

hi. my phone does not let me initiate the file transfer option when i connect it via data cable to pc or my mac. it only charges the phone and that too extremely slowly. i have tried different cables (original cable that came with my phone, original cable from my wife's note 20 ultra, original cable from my spare oneplus 7 pro. nothing works. i have factory resetted. i have enabled usb debugging. i have enabled file transfer mode in developer options. the is just not recognised. when i run the diagnosis from the samsung members app, it says all ok. what do i do?
Check Windows Event Viewer for error messages. Reload/check driver.
Turn off Developer options then turn back on.
Double check USB options.
Will a otg flashstick work in the phone?

Play with it. Something that's probably obvious... once you find it.
Samsung Experience centers at Best Buys can also run tests on it.
You have to replace the USB connector. Charging is happening in different pins and data transfer require another set of pins.
I suggest you to clean it with a brush and isopropyl alcohol. If still doesn't work take it to service center and get it replaced.
