[Q] Unable to cast to Chromecast from iPhone, Laptop - General Questions and Answers

Hi All,
I am having two problems in casting to Chromecast:
1) Unable to cast from Pandora (iPhone 5, Nexus 7 & laptop) to Chromecast - note that I am in Japan. I do have a US DNS (unblockus) and Songza works just fine from iPhone & laptop. But no luck for Pandora. I have Windows 7 Pro installed with Core i5.
2) Unable to cast any tab from my laptop to Chromecast. I am using HP Elitebook. I already added google chrome in firewall exceptions.
3) When I try to cast tabs from my other laptop (older model HP G42), it casts everything fine, even streams videos without a hitch.
I would appreciate any help you may be able to offer.
Thanks a ton!

Boot laptop in safe mode
I tried starting up my laptop in safe mode and I was able to cast webpages and Pandora. Clearly, some background service is blocking the cast feature. I have already tried disabling firewall and windows security, still no luck. Anybody else having this problem? Any advise on the best way to check which service is blocking casting? Turning on/off every service would take very long! Plus, maybe there are more than one services that are blocking this feature, hopefully there is a better way...
And still no luck with Pandora on iPhone...

Some more digging into the system
I digged into the system some more and here is what I found:
The cast feature was still not working even after disabling non-microsoft services. So microsoft services might be blocking the feature. Here are the microsoft services currently running. I would really appreciate if anyone could help me understand which service might potentially cause a conflict:
MSFT online services sign-in assistant

The built-in L2TP/IPSec VPN client is compatible with the Cisco 3000 VPN Concentrator, but you need to setup the concentrator correctly to support it. It's a double bonus though as the setup for it to support the Windows Mobile L2TP/IPSec VPN Client is also applicable for the native Windows 2000+ L2TP/IPSec client, so you don't have to install the Cisco VPN Client on the PC's. The VPN Client in Windows Mobile is a bit temperamental though, especially on the Wizard, so there is a downside...... The 5.2.1437 ROM seems to be the most stable so far.
For RSS Feeds I am using JeyoInformer. This has an option to be displayed on the Today screen however I haven't used it too much, I just included it in my ROM build. There is a default XML file that it used and this has BBC's RSS news feed included.

Awesome! Thank you for the info. I will test is using the native VPN client. Will post the results.
So apparently the VPN that I need to connect to only uses L2TP/UDP where as the built in native VPN client uses PPTP or L2TP/IPSec. Any ideas if there is a VPN Client for Windows Mobile that uses L2TP/UDP?

No, the setup on the VPN Concentrator is wrong, or at least not setup for L2TP/IPSec VPDN. If it is already setup and your network admin doesn't want to reconfigure it then you will have to get an alternative VPN client.
Some details here, however I used RSA Signatures instead of pre-shared keys but this requires certificates.

How with the built-in VPN client does one specify the Cisco VPN 'group name'?
On linux I have a vpnc client functional, but to connect I need to be able to give the client the following:
vpn host
user
password
group name -- where do I put this in??
group password --I put this in as the IPSec/L2TP pre-shared key, of course in it's non-encrypted form via http://www.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/~massar/bin/cisco-decode -- is this correct?
old post, but I have the same question. My VPN requires a group name and group password (both of which I have) but the built wimo setup doesn't ask me for either.
hello
for group name and pass auth. you need to use anthavpn or bluefire sec. clients. but both not free

CSICO VPN Client

Is there away to install CISCO VPN Client on the universal device? instead of using MS client which I don't trust it as everyone does
If there's away please let me know how and where I can download the .cab file.
try this
AnthaVPN
http://www.anthasoft.com/index.php
I use this one (connection to a Cisco PIX):
http://www.ncp-e.com/
you can also try SSL vpn (web vpn) or anyconnect client.
What's wrong with the integrated VPN client
The integrated VPN client in Windows Mobile 6/6.1 is a standards based client, I don't know why you wouldn't want to use it? I currently have Cisco IOS Routers & PIX Firewalls configured to work with the integrated VPN client in Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista as well as Windows Mobile 6/6.1. I have disabled the PPTP stuff on the Cisco devices and only use the L2TP/IPSec with 3DES but it all works perfectly.
It took a while getting it working effortlessly but it does now Setup on the Client side is simple and easily supported - no worrying about 3rd party apps, I can't complain about any of it (not now anyway, at the time of testing and getting it all working might have been a different story.....).
Plus Cisco don't have a Windows Mobile VPN Client?

I'm using it exactly the same way you just mentioned above, but when I look to iPhone comes with CISCO VPN client built-in so I suspect that there's one available for CISCO so I specify which tunnel name and so on since I designed different tunnels with different access levels. So if we deployed to the entire company will not meet company’s min. standard security to segregate or have different access level per tunnel.
I know that CISCO doesn’t have client as of yet for WM.

You can have different access levels with the built-in VPN client, its all in the configuration of the back end though with your access servers and the authentication servers (Radius/Tacacs). Using a proprietary client seems to defeat the object of open standards doesn't it? Plus it's something else to support (and go wrong..)
My 2cents..

[APP Idea] server app

Ok, the basic Idea of this App is to provide an easy setup for an ftp & or web server (should be customizable) which also provides a shortened url for easy access.
also my idea was that the app can do this over different of protocolls, bluetooth, w-lan usw.
is something like this technically possible?, i know there are ftpserver apps out there but it is not quite the same.

Easy ftp and web server apps already exist that work over wifi. bluetooth is tricky, as a normal web or ftp server won't be easily usable (but bluetooth already has methods of doing file transfers that works quite well, and there are apps to handle this, like Blutooth File Manager). What is USW?
AFAIK, there is not an app to do those things over ad-hoc wifi - they all require connecting to an access point. Being able to open up an app and have it set up an ad-hoc wireless network with another android device and allow easy high-speed file sharing would be awesome.
As for cellular data, there's a major hurdle to overcome on some carriers. Verizon, for example, does not allow incoming connections over cellular data. So you can set up a web or ftp server, but you won't be able to access it. The way around that is to have the phone establish the connection to some server, then have that server act as the gateway. Bandwidth is not free, though, so I suspect you'd be hard-pressed to find an app that includes that feature, unless it also requires that you set up your own server gateway. I'd like to see something like this - an app that establishes general-purpose 2-way comms with a server application on command (by hitting a "start" button in the app), which then allows you to set up different types of servers (ssh, ftp, web, etc) that are routed through that gateway machine that you set up.
One way to accomplish that whole scheme is to use a VPN - when a VPN is established (even over 3G), you can access any server you want to via the VPN-assigned IP address.

VPN services

Please help me with my problem,I tried several VPN providers for surfing the Internet, like StrongVPN or HotspotVPN,

Thanks,
Hi,
I signed up for a Virtual Dedicated Server with Windows 2008 and I am able to use VPNSecure.Me software to connect through several VPN’s successfully.
Hope this helps.

Peer to Peer communication on Android

With personal computers like Android smart phones as powerful as they are, why are we always communicating through third party servers? Why is it necessary to have everything run through DUO parsed by Google? Why not communicate Peer to Peer? For example, LinPhone can call direct by setting "domain" to the remote IP - or better, the dynamic DNS entry. A VPN server could be configured to accept connections from friends with the right credentials. The direct connection will have less latency. Is anyone else doing this?
Torrent are the best example of peer to peer connection. Intranet and LAN are also make faster peer to peer connection.
I was thinking the same about torrent...
