[Q] Does anyone know what this weird sound, at ~25s, when listening to music is? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

http://youtu.be/6XZSef6fuKU?t=21s
Could this be a hardware issue and worth RMAing? I'm running Franco Kernel r32 at the moment and someone said it could be that so I'm going to try going back to stock for a while to see if that solves the problem. Aside from that though, does anyone know what the problem could be?
edit: Forgot to mention, this isn't my video. The video was just to show you what the sound is. It happens to me without a bug report being created.

This is not an issue.
Just before it happens you pressed create bug report.
That usually takes a few seconds to create the report which is when you are hearing the distortion.
A bug report only usually happens when something misbehaves.
It creates a log of what was happening at the time and is quite an intensive task for the few seconds it takes.
It's likely that the CPU was unable to keep playback smooth while it was performing the log.
If it only happens when creating the log and no other times then do not worry about it.
Just for your piece of mind. I just tried the exact same thing.
Playing music.
Take bug report.
3 distortions happened during the time it was collecting.
Once complete no problems.
So I have the exact same behavior as you. And I'm not even slightly concerned that there is a problem

On top of that, it may be related to a power saving setting on the custom kernel. Try changing governors/ increasing CPU frequency....
and playing around with the kernel features. The kernel is hot supplying enough CPU power to handle the bug-report process (or any other heavy process) + the music app at the same time.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that that's not my video, just an example of the sound. I don't get that noise when a bug report is sent, it's random.

Its ok, the answers still apply to your or any similar case. Could happen with different music apps sometimes when phone is sleeping.

Interesting. So this isn't a hardware issue and I shouldn't RMA the phone? Is there anything that'll fix it eventually?

I gave the potential solution on my first post.
Also, if it doesn't work, try flashing another kernel.

I'm skeptical about messing around with the kernel since I have no idea what anything means, nor what they do. I just knew that FKU was a set and forget kernel so that seemed like the best option for me. As of now, I'm running stock and seeing if the problem happens again so we'll see. Hopefully it doesn't.

It may be ok now that you are stock..
Now that you are into flashing kernels, you first need to how they work, at least understand what the settings are for.
learn here about governors http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1369817

Just raise the minimum CPU frequency up by one step if it bothers you.
It's 100% not a problem with the phone.
Is your screen on or off when it happens.
The best explanation I can think of is;
Your phone has a quad core 2.3 GHz processor.
Most of the time it is running at 1 core 0.3ghz in order to save power.
If something happens while your listening to music. Say an email starts coming through.
Your phone takes a small amount of time increasing the speed of your processor to better handle the tasks it's performing.
It looks like during that small amount of time it can't handle and the music skips.
Then as the speed increases it continues playback.
Again this is likely only noticeable on francos with the settings you have for the kernel.

The custom kernel is at fault. It's due to the minimum freq. being too low. Either raise the min frequency or switch back to the stock kernel. I have yet to experience this on my stock Nexus 5.

Yeah, I'm on stock kernel right now. I just wanted to try out a custom kernel because I heard it makes the battery like a lot better and it seemed like it was, but then again I didn't really give the stock kernel a chance.

The Autogroup Thread for Sense kernels

As there has been much discussion about this I thought I'd start a thread and try and get this worked out properly.
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=linux_2637_video&num=1
This 200 line patch is a subject of debate on here, some people claiming it will make a difference, some claiming it won't. Personally I don't think it will. So lets put this to bed.
A backport of this patch is available here -:
http://mirror.couttstech.com/android/bravo/kernel/taskgroup-2.6.38-backport-2.6.32.patch
Any kernel devs willing to try this are most welcome
I have built a kernel with this patch applied, that is available here -:
http://mirror.couttstech.com/[email protected]_CMBattFix_AUTOGROUP_CFQ.zip
Now, this kernel works fine for me, however, some people have reported blank screen problems. I have recompiled and re-uploaded, so if anyone could test that would be great.
Currently I am getting between 1500 and just under 1600 in quadrant with this kernel. I get slightly higher with a BFS/BFQ version on the same kernel. It does feel smooth, but so does the BFS version.
So if anyone can help test this, it would be appreciated.
*****NOTE***** I do not accept any responsibility for any damage this kernel may cause to your device.
I guess one can't see any big difference, because this patch is about Linux Desktop Machines. Their hardware and system architecture is just too different to really compare it. It might have a real effect on a desktop.
I tried your kernel. When the screen is off. I turn it on and it hang .The top of the screen have a white line and i can't do anything. back to the other kernel is ok.
Why do you think your bench score should increase?! As i understood it the patch only increases the responsivness under heavy load. So to test it, one should get the cpu to 100% load and then see if other apps/screen transition/etc are more responsive.
Well even if this patch helps then I wonder if this is still needed. I don't compile stuff or encode videos in background on my phone ;-) . Can't really think off many situations when I would have a heavy cpu load in background. Or do you compile stuff on your phone with 64 jobs while watching some vids (like in the vid of the article)?
What cpu gobernor are you using? With smartass i get a black screen, may be with other there isnt problem.

I don't think bench should increase, and agree with everything you have said, this patch should make no difference. But some are adament that it does, hence this thread
The problem is (if I understood the patch right) that the automated taskgroup thing is based on tty. Android don't use a tty so first we need something like that Implement automated per session task groups. That should behave better (need to test it but I think it will). Maybe this is the problem and it solves the blank screen problem.

[Kernel]Experimental 2.6.35 with Automatic Voltage Scaling (AVS)

This kernel is based on Thalamus's Oxygen Kernel but with AVS and he's given me permission to post it here for testing.
I implemented AVS from scratch (based on the Code Aurora kernel) and it seems to work well for me.
AVS uses some hardware to emulate the longest gate delays through the CPU datapath. If the delay is longer than expected, the CPU voltage can be decreased, if shorter then it can be increased. This means that the CPU is always running near the minimum voltage it requires and because power consumption rises with the square of voltage this is a good thing.
Here are the results of some initial tests (full load, no idle):
Clock Speed, Without AVS, With AVS
1113600,234mA,223mA
998400,207mA,190mA
768000,158mA,138mA
499200,111mA,93mA
384000,90mA,79mA
245000,70mA,64mA
So there are power savings of about 8-15%
All patches are initially pushed here:
https://github.com/dzo/kernel/tree/2.6.35-bravo-exp
and should end up here:
https://github.com/thalamus/kernel/tree/2.6.35-bravo-exp
You can see the current status of AVS by doing:
Code:
cat /sys/module/avs/parameters/status
Doing:
Code:
echo 1 > /sys/module/avs/parameters/debug
will put lots of debugging info in the kernel log.
To disable AVS do:
Code:
echo 0 > /sys/module/avs/parameters/enabled
The minimum voltage is set to 900mV but you can change this using e.g.:
Code:
echo 850 > /sys/module/avs/parameters/vdd_min
Putting too low a value in here will crash your phone because AVS seems to have trouble with low frequencies.
I also added some extra frequency steps, 76.8MHz and 192MHz.
Don't expect huge power savings, the CPU is only one of the things using power on our devices.
I think AVS is a nice idea and I'd like to know how stable it is on other people's phones.
To install, flash the attached update zip from recovery.
Please don't use this kernel unless you are fairly well informed about what you are doing.
15/4/12: Updated kernel with higher vdd_min
Going to give this a test now, I'll report back later.
How did you produce those mA readings btw?
have you tried using other kernels like Eviolets one? does it really save much more battery than EVs?
is it 100% stable??
with the kernel using some hardware to calculate the voltages needed wouldnt it take some more power to get the calculations done?

What are the available governors? I can't find this information on github.
Will switching between governors (depending on phone state) cause any issues with the voltage change, that aren't advised?

He never mentioned it is specifically for AOSP or Sense ROMs. I was wondering if this is just a separate script, not kernel dependent. But if I give it a 2nd read then yes, it seems indeed it is an entire kernel, my bad, no need for a spoon...or w/e it means.

Don't listen to Thalamus. He has no time for people less "knowledgeable" than him. There was a time where I thought a kernel was a kernel.
I thought I had escaped his unhelpful comments when I left Oxygen thanks to his attitude (if you don't like his attitude, then tough is the general gist of it). If he was a shop owner he would go bankrupt, quickly, as he has no people skills whatsoever.
If he wasn't a dev, he would be labeled a troll, yet he is allowed to get away with being nasty to people. When will XDA introduce a -thanks button?
I think the saying goes, if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all.
Thanks, this one looks like a good project
As to stability: i've been using this kernel for a couple hours without issues, with very small draining btw; anyway a few minutes ago the phone became unresponsive: i was just typing a message with whatsapp, clocked 192x806, and a freeze occurred. A soft reset did the trick.
Keep up the good job
Edit: i'm on beta 2 fyi...

AVS has nothing to do with power consumption while the device is asleep. When the phone sleeps, the CPU is power collapsed, i.e. is completely powered down. AVS only changes the voltage while the CPU is awake.
The Kernel work great on Miui 1.4.8 since 2 days! No reboot or freeze... and in idle with JiuceDefender, 652Mhz max ondemand over 3h the device lost only 2% accu
Thanks for your work

Just a quick post to say that I've been testing this kernel for 2/3 days (actually the version that Thalamus has in his experimental github) and find the battery usage to be the same. But the AVS code seems much cleaner than the implementation I have.
As for stability, I haven't had a single crash yet. And overall speed seems better than on my kernel.
Quadrant also confirms this.

Updated:(3/6/2011) Lets Solve G2x Freezing Issue (Solved:Random Freezing in standby)

I know there are countless threads related to G2x Problems but none of the threads are focusing on isolating the reasons of Freezing Issue. I have recently upgraded my phone from Galaxy S Vibrant to G2x and i have to say i love the hardware and performance. Only Issue for me is random freezing.
After using the phone for 2 weeks and trying 3 roms
1. Stock
2. EB 1.04
3. Dark Sinister 1.1
I have come to a conclusion that kernel and rom is not the solution. At least not for me.
So i will try to solve the problem using hardware testing.
From my past 2 weeks experience.
1. Phone Freezes at night during charging
2. Phone Freezes when ever i turn off/on wifi and bluetooth and gps and Data (4g/3g) (Still have to figure out which of them is the cause. Cause i usually turn all off when i need to save battery).
Test Day 1
For Reason 1
I am using SetCpu and have changed Min from 216 to 312Mhz. I am trying this because i think very low cpu usage in standby for a very long period causes the phone to freeze. Its a Hunch i am not sure.
For Reason 2
I will keep wifi, Bluetooth and GPS off.
I will keep 4g/3g Data On all the time.
To My Surprise its been 16 hours no freeze. It includes charging at night. Lets see how long i can go without a freeze. Upon freezing i will make some changes.
Update 31/5/2011 (Test Day 2)
Ok its been more than 40 hours and not a single crash...
I removed the following possibilities as well....
It wont crash upon excessive usage.
Also Normal Heat up does not cause the crash.
As i have been playing Samurai II Vengeance all day long... Until I ended it. Several times charging along playing. I even played it on TV using HDMI. Not a single crash. I used to have around 3 crashes a day on stock rom when i unboxed my new G2x.
I also started using GPS from today. So lets see how it goes. I will update it every 24 hour.
Update 3/6/2011 (Test Day 5)
Ok i am considering Random Freezing On standby as solved because i havent had a single freeze at night after setting CPU Clock at 312 MHz using SetCPU. There are also other comments that back up my solution. I am considering this the solution of one problem.
2nd Issue of freezing while using cell phone apps is because of certain applications that are either buggy or not compatible with tegra Platform. For that i will start another thread with individual application testing for all apps that can cause the system to freeze or crash.
Please Discuss apps System Bloat-ware/User Apps that cause your G2x to Crash or Freeze in the following thread i created:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14399089
Thanks for all the feedback.
Luckily I dont get that issue, buy I think this is a good test :u
Good point. I have not had these issues but i do have trinity kernel and minimum speed is 300
G2x with CM7 and trinity kernel
All you have to do is be careful what apps you install. I've had the phone for over a month and the one time it rebooted or froze was when I used an app the phone didn't agree with.
I am almost certain that people are experiencing reboots and freezing because of the apps they have on their phone. Hopefully the update will solve the problem because it shouldn't be that way.

In my opinion, the shut down has to do with temperature of the phone. As long as I keep the phone cool by not charging and multitask with other things, then my phone is fine.

I used to think the same thing but the problem is my phone gets hot and works fine. I am almost positive it has something to do with an issue in the kernel that's being exposed by certain apps. Do you or @kangxi remember what Apps gave you issues?
it has to be a driver issue, its virtually the only explanation for why devs have not hammered it out yet or even CM7 team for that matter... it has problems on pure AOSP which leaves drivers or overheating (unlikely)... LG has to come up with the fix because they know their drivers and hardware better than everyone else...
Well the obvious problem I see is that they are all based on the stock rom. Try using one build from AOSP or a CM variety.
I didn't stay stock long but I did have reboot using the leaked Gingerbread (which is what EB is built from). I don't follow it but one is based off the stock 2.2.2 rom and the other is based off the leaked 2.3.3 rom.
I had nothing but problems with the stock roms. Thus your problem I think. Move over to Bionic, CM7, Gigglebread, or something.
I tested my phone and I didn't have a reset in like 5 days (which then my battery died overnight because I forgot to plug it in). I usually crackflash the CM nightlies and haven't had any problems with reboots or any issues requiring a reboot (aside from the flashlight killing audio, but just don't use it).
There are definitely two problems - software and the battery. I used to way more problems until I exchanged the battery for a new one and that solved most of my issues. The issues that remain are definitely software based.

Looks like you are gaining progress. Sounds like keeping the processor revved up a little more does the trick.
It would be a simple fix for people to try that have reboot issues. I can't get mine to reboot, so unfortunately I cannot help you. My contribution was to resist from flashing for as long as possible to test how long I could get my "uptime" to. I got up to 127 hours when I passed out without charging it.
I'm running 20 hours now because I forgot to charge it again (seems to be my only problem, lol).
Looks like you may have fixed your rebooting issues. It sounds feasible that the clock speed could be causing it. I never had a reboot so I can't help you out but I can tell you that I have a profile under SETCPU that clocks it at 216 min and 216 max when the display is off and I don't have a problem. I wonder why the low clock speeds would only effect certain devices? Maybe it's certain apps that stay running in the background (since there poorly written) that require higher clock speeds than what the G2X gives at idle?

I've definitely noticed that the G2X wakes up faster and smoother (fade in from screen off) when min is set to 312mhz that's for sure. if this is all it will take to stop the reboots, I'll be super happy because otherwise this phone is just amazing.

Have you noticed any changes in battery usage? I haven't really played around with SETCPU much but can the clock speed be set lower and if it can, have you tried slightly lower settings than 312mhz?
y are u guys using setcpu? and its def cuz the min is too low faux has his at 400 and no problems morfic also has his a little higher then what is it i think 216?? thats too low thats y setcpu isnt supported yet.....pimp my cpu
Someone asked me a question earlier. Only app I had issues with was fring. Soon as I opened it and started playing around with it, phone rebooted.
I uninstalled and it never happened again.

No clue what you're trying to say but setCPU works fine. At startup for first time I selected Tegra2 and it works great. I have max set to 1000 and min to 312mhz (default was min to 216mhz). I'm running stock ROM but with root. that's all.

well thats y it works for u, u cant overclock over a thousand mhz so in ur situation ur ok i guess it only applies for people running a custom kernel then setcpu doesnt work, then u would need pimp my cpu

running virtuous infinity... very low speakerphone volume

hi, i used to have a G2 running CM7, recently got a MT4GS (Doubleshot) and was using CM9 on it, but didn't like the camera app, i loved the stock sense camera app on the MT4GS, just don't want the bloatware. so after some googling, i have found VIRTUOUS INFINITY to fit my needs with a stockish feel, but sleeker/quicker.
only thing i've come across that keep this rom from being a homerun, is the speakerphone volume is really really low... is there a fix for this yet? i am running the latest beta with OTA updater.
also, when using instagram, the "blur" effect, causes artificats in the blurred area.
once again, only real gripe i have is the ridiculously low sound i get from speakerphone when on the phone... like literally, the headset speaker is louder then the speakerphone at full volume.
love the rom otherwise, camera works great, and i don't need 1080p recording, perfectly happy with 720p.
Hi! Are you talking about the incall volume? If yes I have made a patch for this already which fixes a couple of bugs. And one of them is the in call volume.
Here's a mirror made by the great WeekendsR2Short who just got his mirror thread stickied now.

Just flash it above the current virtuous infinity ROM you have and clean the dalvik cache.

hi, i appreciate the quick reply. i am referring to the actual speakerphone volume. i was on CM9 for a few hours, and know the speakerphone was loud enough to hear over the radio while driving. after i i went to V.I., the speaker phone volume sucks, but i am loving the rom... small compromise, but was hoping there was a fix, as in my little google efforts showed others have experienced the same thing.
i havn't tried the patch you linked me, i have used the Sound Enhancer Patch.zip from the same stickied thread though. hoping that would be the solution i was looking for, it seemed to increase the speakerphone volume slightly, but nowhere as loud as it was with CM9 or stock rom.
thinking of trying bulletproof right now, i see lots of praise on that rom too.

just tried the patch you linked me to in your reply. that fixed my problem! thanks a lot! my speakerphone is now as audible as it once was! i didn't try the all in one patch, i just tried the sound enhancer one. my problem is solved now.
i will post back with any updates, hopefully phone stays stable, i noticed after i installed the soundenhancer patch, while making a phone call and putting it on speaker to try it out, i was having the phone turn off on me, or OS crash, not sure. going to revert to backup i made in nandroid, and just apply the patch you linked me too. once again, thanks for the help!
I made both the sound enhancer patch and the all in one patch. The sound enhancer patch is buggy and I made a 2nd version of that. And after sometime I compiled all the fixes I made to VI into that all in one patch.

that explains why the sound enhancer patch didn't work then, i should have just did the AIO from the beginning.
ok, new problem i am trying to figure out, but while i got you on here....
my wifi won't turn on now. lol. was working fine earlier. it is stuck saying "turning on" and the checkbox is grayed out to off. was just gonna do a clean re-install of everything, but if you have an idea of how to fix that...

You need to replace the old kernel with the one included in the patch.
Judging by your problem I'm sure your S-On so what you should do is..
extract boot.img from the patch
then fastboot it into your phone.
The new kernel there fixes some other bugs which you might encounter soon so better flash it now rather than later. Else if you insist using the old kernel just replace the bcmdhd.ko in your /system/lib/modules with the one from the original VI flashable zip.

oh ok, makes sense. i had thought it was same kernal. and that i could just flash over rom. ill fast boot the patch kernal in then.
ill do that right now.
and yea, i am s-on, ill look into s-off this weekend. being able to flash from one different roms without having to fastboot through pc first would be a fun way to kill time. lol.
once again, thanks for the quick replies and help. you've been a great help. :good:
I prefer being s-on though but it's your choice. And yeah my device is s-on also.

well, maybe s-off isn't quite needed then, since i'm not quite a developer that will always be flashing new roms on. just trying to have fun with the phone when i can.
anyway, just wanted to report back that phone is running flawlessly now with new kernal and patch, camera is slightly cripser, less lag while multitasking, speakerphone nice and loud, and loving the new battery profiles.
i appreciate the quick help in getting my problem resolved. :good::highfive:
Speaking of camera apps, mattlowry found one for us that works GREAT in this ROM. It adds quite a few more settings that really adds some finetuning abilities for your pictures. If you haven't already, you ought to flash this attachment.....IMHO.

was this included in the unoffical_patch.zip?
i had this flashed onto my phone already, but reverted back to original backup, and flashed the unofficial_patch onto my phone, assuming it had the upgraded camera app too.
if i am mistaken, then ill go ahead and flash that camera app back on.
thanks for the info. :highfive:
edit- just re-read the section in your sticky. will flash the camera app back on. realized it wasn't included in the AIO patch.
:good: It adds enough that I certainly was glad Matt found it.
so i've been using the phone for about a week with no issues.
rather then starting a new thread, i thought i'd post some questions up in here. since i can't post in the developer thread for the rom.
just to confirm, panoramic picture doesn't work? and slow motion video doesn't work? just tried messing with those settings today, but app would just close. just wanted to make sure it wasn't working to begin with and not a faulty install on my part.
i was looking to buy a new battery, but noticed the phone has a 1800mhz battery from an evo 3d. my girlfriend said she bought it, because the original battery was really bad. is there a better battery upgrade for me than the 1800mhz? i notice battery life is great when not using the phone, but as soon as i start browsing the net, or listening to music, it sees the battery drains almost a percent every few minutes. is there an app or way to test health of a battery?
also, for the launcher/app drawer, is there a way to make the apps scroll vertically versus horizontally?
and while i'm asking questions, anyone have a recommendation for a mobile video editing app? something easy to trim clips, and add transitions, and maintain HD quality.
other then these few questions. i'm loving the phone and rom. been real stable besides the aforementioned things. it still has artifact glitching when using the blur tool in instagram, but that i can live with.
thanks in advance for any insight/help. :highfive::good:

Panoramic picture is a framework issue so downloading a 3rd party camera which doesn't depend on htc framework should work. And regarding slow motion video it's a kernel issue. Virtuous team never really focused on fixing the kernel to fix up it's compatibility(this includes 1080p recording) so we maybe having a decent sense 4 ROM but we got a crippled kernel.

It's a sense 4 thing. Better of using a different launcher instead or fully modify the layout of the rosie.apk. But I can't do it.

I'd love an update to this ROM!

thanks for the reply! i will download that app for video editing, and find one for panoramic pictures.
i just downloaded cpu tuner, and set my clock sped to roughly 1.5ghz, phone is nice and snappy, real responsive, feels like a brand new phone. is this a safe stable range to clock at (1.5ghz)? or should i run lower, it was only at 1ghz, and i was reading that some roms actually set the kernal clock speed at 1.7ish... ill probably turn it down to 1.3ish, hopefully for better battery life and overall longevity of phone.
and whats a good minimum clock speed? was unsure what it meant, but i think its basically the resting clock speed when phone isn't in use?

thanks for the quick reply! i just wanted to make sure 1.7 was safe to run daily... or whenever i wanted extra perkyness.
can't wait to get my new anker batteries in the mail, so i can start adding a lot of games and movies and seeing what kind of battery life and phone usage i can get out of tweaked cpu profiles.
once again, thanks for the help everyone.:highfive:

My phone will get a bit freaky at 1.7gHz if I run it too long. My basic range is 192mHz to 1.5gHz all day everyday. I have yet to need 1.7gHz when 1.5gHz works for everything I need it to.

Have you tried going back to stock with Odin?
Not sure if your issue is the same as mine, but after I went back to stock it seems to have corrected the issue. It still seems to warm up a little when I'm using it a lot (playing a game, looking at the LOL Droid app, but not, oddly, playing a video) but the battery issue seems to have been solved.
I know that using the phone is going to make the processor run faster, and that faster processor speeds can definitely contribute to heat build up. Do you have a case? If so, take it off. If not, maybe give the phone a break every now and then? I don't know.

I had a over heating issue a while back... Turned out to be a run away wake lock. Media scanner. I had to Odin back to stock and rebuild back to the custom rom to totally get rid of it.

I would install Better Battery Stats (if you don't already have it installed) and monitor it for wakelocks to see if something is preventing the phone from deep sleeping.

Agreed az is known for pure heat not humidity thank god lol but I will check my wake locks again again and try to find what's cause media scanner only runns once at boot otherwise doesn't need to run. But I think I might switch back to stock and see if it does it on rot stock
thanks guys
