What is thr location of the backups? Check that in settings. Make sure it's data/media/0.

Reboot your phone prior to connecting. It always need a fresh restart to connect properly with MTP

Yeah this has happened to me a few times once you go to that folder there is an option to search for backups on the device.
On a side note before I back up with titanium backup I go to this option and pick the location I want to backup to and restore from making sure its on the external sd card..

You back-ups are being stored on the phones internal storage card [5GB] not the external storage [actual card - 32 gb in my case]. Just change the back-up location.

Is there a way to do a backup and then transfer it and save it to my computer and then put it back on my phone and restore it?

Use titanium backup(download off market *requires root access*) to backup all system data and apps. once you do that then press the menu button and create update.zip you can also change the name of it to titanium back up to make it easier for you. after you create the zip file connect your phone to your computer and on your phone put it in usb mode.(this means when the phone asks turn on usb mode click turn on usb mode.)
Then on your computer go to start then to your phone which should be removable disk you should see all your files. locate the zip file you just created and copy it to your desktop or wherever you want to get it on your computer. If you have root just using recovery to install the zip again would be easier. if you want to root your phone i can get you a lick to help you do so.

mybackup pro works good for me, and no root required

Starting from scratch

This may seem like a dumb noob question but I just wanted to check.
I'm about to go from a 10.1 unofficial build to a 10 build. I remember from previous flashes I ended up with the nested /0 folders, so I decided to just start again from scratch, back up all the data on my internal and copy it to my computer.
My question is what is Safe to delete. I'd like to get as close to unused and empty internal storage as possible
Should in just delete everything inside the internal storage folder? Is it safe to do that without screwing everything up...

What are you using to delete and what are you deleting? Screen shot?

When you connect your phone to your computer, everything you see can be deleted. You cant see the system partiton when you connect the phone to the computer, so Its safe to delete everything on the phone (That windows allows you to see). Android will automatically create the folders that it needs if it needs them.

Backup the phone questions

Hello,
My old phone had a SD Card, Nexus 5 not. So my backup process doesn't work any more. I used to make a backup with CWM. I then mounted the SD Card in CWM so I could copy all my data and the CWM backup. If I wanted to install a new ROM I just deleted complete SD card and copy new ROM for installation on it...
Now I have installed TWR. In TWR I can't mount the internal storage to USB. So I have to boot to Android and then copy data from internal storage to my computer. But I can't copy all the data to my computer because it stops the copy process in order of a copy failure. I think I can't copy some data because they are used/opened by system or something like that.
How do you backup your whole phone?
You can use the Nexus Root Toolkit. You can do a Nandroid backup and much more. NRT will boot into recovery, make the backup and copy the backup to your PC, after booting normally.
