Do you NEED to? No, and most certainly not for the uses you've just mentioned.
Should you?
Decide for yourself!

I am sure there are plenty of people that have bought the phone that don't even know xda exist or what rooting/ unlocking the boot loader means which is fine. But since you are here yes do it you won't be sorry.
Follow the above URL instead of using chainfire or whatever Google comes up with in the first search results. It has been causing problems and goofy things.

No you don't and also, no you shouldn't. Not unless you identify the need to. People jump into root for no reason and without understanding. These people often break their phones. Don't let this be you.

Even if you don't decide to root right away, I would suggest at the very least unlocking the bootloader before setting up your phone. When you unlock, it wipes all your data so it's best to get it out of the way before you invest too much time setting up your phone. If you unlock but never decide to root, it's no big deal, but at least you're covered if you do decide to take the plunge.

how to tell if g1 is fully unlocked

hi everyone this is my first post on this fourm,so hopefully i got it in the right section.i just bought my first g1 off of an indv on ebay .it say it is unlocked, but i was wanting to know how to you tell if it is just sim unlocked or fully unlock so i have access to hardware to ? because i want to have that access so i can start learning and makeing stuff later also i wanted to know if you can relock the g1 accidently by doing reset or once unlocked is it always unlock ? well thankyou for your time great site .alot of very helpfull info. i should have phone in hand wed ,i cant wait thanks again .
I think by unlocked they mean you can use it with any network.
if you'd like to know if it is rooted, ie you can change things on the phone to some extent, that's a different story.
yes i think the phone is just network unlocked. but wont know till i get it. so i really want to unlock so i have root access ,but till i get the the phone to see what its running r29 ect. but i didnt know if there was a way to tell if i have root access on the phone when i get it ,before i try to use the info ive read on here about gaining root access ,yes i want to be able to change things on it . thankyou for your reply . .
even if you don't have rc29 you can easily downgrade then upgrade to modified rc30 courtesy JesusFreke.
cool thankyou for the info

Does Samsung Know When You Root Your Phone?

I called Samsung today to get my Stereo Headset replaced and the guy said my Nexus S 4g is already out of Warranty. Now of course i didn't tell him i rooted my phone but wtf I just bought it 12/21/2011. Anyone?
Maybe they were BLUFFING, because lots people buy this phone is because this is Google's son, pure blood of android, we can say 9 of 10 nexus were unlocked and rooted
So it won't be surprised that they assuming you unlocked and rooted it...
Even somehow nexus s has background transmission to them and tell them status, how can they possibly know that unlocked rooted phone is yours?

LMFAO its all good
I don't know if Samsung can tell, but since we're talking about Google Experience devices, I know Motorola can tell if you've ever unlocked the bootloader on your Xoom. If you boot a Xoom into the bootloader's fastboot mode and type "fastboot getvar all", there's a variable there called "IsWarrantyVoid". Out of the factory, it's set to "no", but as soon as you unlock the bootloader for the first time, it changes to "yes". Once IsWarrantyVoid is set to yes, no amount of re-locking will ever get it to change.
The Nexus S doesn't have this fastboot variable, but there could be something stored in the bootloader somewhere that we can't see; something that can tell Samsung if the bootloader has ever been unlocked before. Sounds kinda fishy to me.
my point is , even they know the phone is unlock unrooted , how can they possibly know it is your phone ?
just like 10 people buy a same phone at same time in same place and 9 of them unlocked unroot , and the one who didn't unlock , didn't root calls for help and be told his warranty is avoided ...
or in USA you buy a phone need to binding with your personal ID ?
phone's IMEI matches with personal ID ????
I'm pretty sure it will show up even if you relock it. I unrooted my phone once and it still displayed the unlocked padlock on the bootloader screen.

I don't think they would know it's your phone but they can know if you've unlocked and relocked the bootloader to skirt the warranty issue.

I think even if they do track the nexus's that are rooted or stock they cannot identify your device without checking the IMIE or something ...

Just bought HTC Chacha Black (Need help!)

I just bought HTC Chacha today. I am really luving this phone, but need some assistance from the members over here for the following questions:
1) The phone is on Android 2.3.3/ Software 1.20.720.1: How do I update it to the latest version? I checked software update under about phone, but it says the software is up to date I know 2.3.5 is out, then why am I not able to update it to the latest version??
2) On my phone it still shows android market place: How can I get Google Play app?? Will it upgrade automatically or will I have to manually update it and how??
3) Any help with the dialer bug thing?? Its taking 95% in my battery usage thing I tried all of the suggestions mentioned here http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=17383, but still the dialer thing is using 95%
4) Please suggest some awesome apps/games for my chacha.
5) And finally if any chacha users would like to share tips/tricks, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance everyone....These are some questions which I have currently

Is your phone locked to a certain network or originally sold by a network? The network may not have bothered to push out the latest update, in which case you need to unlock your bootloader to get it.

It should update automatically. If you're impatient, you can download it here and install it manually.

If turning off the sensor based stuff doesn't fix it, you're stuck with the problem as long as you're on the stock ROM sadly. CM7 ROMs don't have this issue and I'm personally looking into fixing it by putting the stock AOSP dialler in my Sense ROM. I'll see if that works before putting it in a final release but it's a possible fix.
4) Please suggest some awesome apps/games for my chacha.

Awesome apps: any file browser (personally I like ASTRO but everyone has their preference)... Other than that all my favourites are root apps
I recommend just going through the Play Store and seeing what apps you like the look of. You probably won't get too far with games on this phone though TBH.

My phone is not locked to any network, I mean I bought the phone unlocked. Still I am not able to update to the latest version.
Thanks for the link for google play store, I will right away install it.
As for the dialer bug thing, after doing all the things mentioned, I am getting like 12 hr run on 100% full battery charge with moderate browsing with wifi. Is this ok?? I mean should I be getting more battery backup??
Now I am totally new to the android rooting scene and I have been reading the xda forums for unlocking the bootloader for chacha and stuff. I checked that my phone is S-ON (dont know what that means, but checked it as it was mentioned in some thread lolz). So does that mean I wont be able to root my phone and install cwf??
Also I want to install cwf on my phone and I checkd out ur cwf and I would like to try that out. But will the sense theme be still there on cwf?? as I really like it and dont want to get stock android theme on my chacha if I install cfw.

If you stay on stock, just wait and see if it gets the update. If it's unlocked it should notify you of it eventually.

You can indeed root and install a custom ROM regardless, just do the official HTC bootloader unlocking process: http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
Also I want to install cwf on my phone and I checkd out ur cwf and I would like to try that out. But will the sense theme be still there on cwf?? as I really like it and dont want to get stock android theme on my chacha if I install cfw.

I am still confused....what if I just want to root the device and not install any custom firmware until I feel the need to...will I be able to use the phone??
Hope I am not confusing you, as I am really confused...as I just had this in my mind that if I just root the device I will be able to use paid apps for free.

No, rooting does not help you install paid apps for free either. If you just root the device without installing custom ROMs you can indeed still use the device just fine.
hey i was unlocking the bootloader frm the htc dev site, and it gave me an error.
It said my current version is 1.20.720.1 and i will first have to update to the latest version to use the ruu tool.
Now as I mentioned that i am not able to update my phone to the latest version, how can i manually update my phone to the latest version so that i can unlock the bootloader and root my device?? BTW i am frm india so i will need the latest version for india.
You have to update the HBOOT not the OS. The process should have a list of links for updaters, choose the one you need and run it on your computer and follow the instructions.
i downloaded the ruu tool from the htcdev site. after i run it, and i do next, next, next...the phone restarts and stays on the htc log screen. after some time i get an error message saying: ur software is not updated and gives error.
What's the error? Did the updater match your phone?
no software update, hence cannot unlock bootloader
I am facing the exact same problem.
The HTC chacha I bought here(India) came with Android 2.3.3 and firmware version 1.20.720.1. When I try software update, the phone says no software updates available.
I tried to unlock the boot loader but the RRU says you are not running the latest software, please update the ROM.
ERROR[190]: ROM IS NOT UPDATED
The error dialog screenshot is attached.
Can anyone tell me how to update to 1.57.720.1, so that i can unlock my bootloader?
My CID is HTC__38

@ hexgore: This is the exact error which I am getting.
@ kini1982: Thanks for sharing the screenshot. I am also in India and my chacha also is running on 2.3 with version 1.20.720.1. Let me know if you find any way around to unlock the bootloader for your phone. Anyways, also keep on checking this thread as hexgore is helping me with the errors which I am facing.
I sent an email to HTC customer care regarding the update problem. They are asking me to take my phone to a authorized service center to update from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5. (Also says, charges might apply because I tried to unlock boot-loader)
This really sucks :-(. I was hoping they would suggest a offline method to update the phone myself.
Same error
Even I have the same problem.

Go to the service center and just tell them to update ur phone to the latest version. Don`t mention you will be unlocking the bootloader after tht...lolz...
I hope this helps...as if I cant find any offline method to update to 2.3.5 thn will go to the service center here in mumbai to update the phone
Well if the update isn't coming up then as others have said, take it to HTC and get them to update it I guess. Don't mention bootloader unlocking. Seeing as you didn't actually flash anything to your phone, they won't know.

Either you do that or try and find an official RUU installer for your device and region. I'm searching right now but I can't find it. You need an official exe file, if you can find that for the Indian 2.3.5 update you can do it yourself.
Otherwise, you would have to get S-OFF, that's your only real alternative. For that you need a special clip and it might just be easier to go to HTC and get it done.

You people are foolish even more than me. I wanna abuse you but can't.
If your device shows Bootloader status unlocked allowed 'yes'
Then goto unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com
And select device modle and enter emi number and fu+k yourself and get an unlock code.
And use experifirm to flash any regions firmware even global too.

Please keep your temperament low, Mister.
And thank you for "misguiding" people. I unlocked bootloader, downloaded a ton of roms and none would flash. Each one of them results in errors. Downloaded any custom roms available, most go into bootloop while some wont install even.
Relocked bootloader and still wont install OTAs so I am stuck with stock MM with no possibility of getting Nougat because on SO-01H Nougat update is OTA only and there is no FTF available anywhere.
Thanks again. And please dont swear on public forums.

Thats OK.
I have no idea what jeffal jetwari is, but rest assured your advice was acted upon and it made me lose too many hours trying to fix it. No ftf's for other variants work, not even the global version, no custom roms work and there is really not much of a benefit having unlocked the bootloader. So please only advise on something you have experienced personally.

Rooting (only) Honor View 10

Looking for some advice........I've just bought an Honor View 10 and I want to root it (just to use Apps that require root access), i.e. I don't need to flash any images etc as I'm not installing a new ROM
Is this possible straight out of the box? i.e Phone still has a locked Bootloader
If so, is there a guide somewhere on how to do this? ......Cheers!
You should really do some research before asking. Your answers are out there, just look for them.

You REALLY shouldn't have bought any Huawei/Honor device since they no longer give out bootloader unlock codes.
The only way to unlock now is through paid services, so if you still can I suggest you return it and get a phone from another manufaturer like OnePlus or Xiaomi
I know other phones are easier to root since Honor/Huawei aren't giving out Bootloader codes anymore, but that didn't really answer my question though......Is it possible to just root the phone without a Bootloader Code (just root, no flashing)..

No it is not possible. The bootloader code is needed to root/flash. You can like the previous person, spend some cash to get the bootloader code. Hope that helps?
