[Q] Original screen protection - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have scratched my screen, i take care and we have Gorilla Glass 3.
So, is there an original screen protection on the Nexus 5?
It was happened to me with a Xperia.
Thanks and sorry for my bad english.

the gorilla glass just isn't as good as others for some reason, my galaxy s4 i had for months which i treat worst than my nexus still has no scratches at all on the display not even a hairline, but i got them on my nexus 5 screen in first 2 days some how

s4 and n5 are both gorilla glass 3, shouldn't be a difference. probably just bad luck in the first 2 days

I think that there is a very good stuck screen protection.

Gorilla glass is a marketing gimmick.

Thanks all but it's not my question. If the screen scratchs easily, I think that Google stick a pre-installed screen protection, isn't it?

Sony did too

Yes! I had it on my Xperia Arc S. So, is it the same with the Nexus 5?

except you have the words "nexus5" across the screen protector. its pretty good still if you don't mind the words on the screen protector

pre installed screen protector is not really a protector, just a piece of plastic which can't resist scratches much. you're better off with a 3rd party screen protector.
And LG coats the screen with a proprietary layers of oleophobic coating, etc etc during manufacturing so that is what you touch when you use the phone naked. Also this doesn't offer protection.

I think I know what you are asking about.
Sony Xperia phones come with a "mandatory" Anti-shatter film installed on the screen which Sony expects you to keep on forever. However, this film is prone to scratches which is why they recommend putting a screen protector on top of the film. If you try to remove the film (which is glued onto the screen), what's left is raw glass (no coating). The glass is not gorilla glass. Removing the film also voids warranty. I bet a lot of people didn't know that when they buy Xperia.
As for OP's question, there is no such "screen protection" on the Nexus. Only the Sony brands do this.

I know what you're talking about. It's the film that Sony puts on their devices that can't really be taken off without a knife. Apparently that scratches really easily but the screen underneath doesn't. No, the N5 doesn't have anything like that, and yes, it does scratch very easily.

i know s4 and n5 both use gorilla glass 3 but my nexus 5 is still getting more and more scratches where my s4 doesn't have one there really is a difference in the quality no one can tell me any different, because if their wasn't there would be no scratch on my n5 as i tram them exactly the same put them in the same places and i have had my s4 for a lot longer

Even though it doesn't have gorilla glass, the screen seems to be scratch resistant. I know because I don't use a screen protector.

Same here, I don't use a screen protector and don't think I need one at this point. I've had my phone for months now, and its been through situations where scratches should be inevitable. The case has a few nicks around the edges, but there is only 1 tiny tiny hairline scratch going across the home button. Not noticeable, I only noticed it when looking at the slight wave of the glass right next to the lamp.

Even though it suppose to be scratch proof, i would still recommend a screen protector.
For who are you saving the screen? To the next owner? Doesn't it look ugly with the screen protector? I have never understand these. I use my phones usually 6-12months. I have got twice a tiny, tiny hair scratch to the screen. One was Gorilla glass (I think it's soooo over hyped), other one just scratch resistant. For my htc hero I never got a scratch in 6 months... I wonder how you treat your phones...
So no I don't use a screen protector, not after Nokia 5800XM which had a plastic screen. And even with that I got bored to the protector and rip it off after few week...

Good question. The way Gorilla Glass 2 is advertised would make it seem like it's not easily scratch or damaged. Due to the countless people reporting how easy the front and back of the Nexus 4 is to scratch (sometimes randomly), the Gorilla Glass isn't really doing what it claims lol...
either way, better safe than sorry >_>
It's scratch resistant, not scratch proof
Scratch resistant doesn't mean scratch proof. Any type of sand or non-skin dust in your pocket will severely scratch the device.
Ironically I was watching this Youtube Vid just before I saw this thread.

Lol...
If "non skin dust" in your pocket severely scratches your phone you must be furiously rubbing the front of your pants.
I bought an XO skin for mine but never applied it as I have found the screen to still be in wonderful condition after all of these months. I did baby the phone for a bit but after a while it didn't matter... I have accidentally dropped it twice two from my desk onto hard floor and it hasn't suffered.
Maybe if I drop it a third time I might not be so lucky =P.
Either way, the glass has remained intact with no scratches so I am happy.
After the first day of my 2nd nexus 4 I saw a bunch of scratches on the bottom of the screen. Not happy. Got a bumper the day after.

You will need one because, stuff happens =[. Mine has 3 scratches. I'm guessing it happened in a random pocket in a random jacket of mine. They bother me when I'm using my phone under a good amount of light, but usually I don't notice them. I just love how the screen feels without a screen protector. If you don't mind potentially getting scratches, then you won't need a screen protector.

Amen to that.
I swap and sell and change phones often, so the resale value is quite important to me. Therefore I always use a screen protector as scratches lessen the value of the device
No screen protectors here and no scratches. I am careful with my phones though
I haven't had a screen protector on my Nexus 4 since day 1 in November. No scratches.

cause a bumper will protect your screen from scratches..... D'uh!
Can any one confirm that the back of the phone is Gorilla glass?
I've had my phone since December and the front glass is still scratch free but the back has a couple of 1cm scratches on it and seemed a lot more prone to getting marked than the front. So, I've stuck a dbrand skin on it which protects the back and makes my phone look pretty cool!

I've only had my Nexus 4 for a week, and I took it with me to the beach for spring break - sand scratched the s**t out of my screen on the first day. Ordered some wet screen protectors, hopefully that'll help!

I ordered one and it should be coming soon but until then I can't say how well it fits the nexus 5. What I can tell you tho is that I had it for my note 2 and never used a case. Dropped it many times and haven't had any cracks on the screen so I like it.

Amazing reply, thank you. I heard the nexus 5 screen is fragile so i didn't want to take any chances.
A screen protector helping with drops? Don't kid yourself. When the plastic casing of a phone takes an impact hard enough the force will be transferred to the glass and it will crack. Big screens and small bezels have this effect and neither a plastic or glass layer isn't going to prevent that from happening.
Head on screen damage and scratches sure.

Tempered glass protector enough security for N4?

Hi guys.
I have found new case for my Nexus 4, but in my opinion all spoils the appearance of nexus 4, but I found something other. It is tempered glass protector.
It cost about 9$ and look nice CLICK!. I saw many test on youtube, also drop test but only iphones and samsung, no nexus there, but It looked really nice. All times in drop test glass protector broken but screen was like new, any scratch and cracks. Does anyone test it nexus?
What you think about it like only one protector on nexus?
Sorry for my poor language. (on back only film screen protector)
Best Regards!
I'm guessing no one bothered to reply..... Anyway I know not many manufacturers offer tempered glass screen protectors for the nexus 4, but I have direct experience with some for the iPhone 5s and drop protection is superb! At first the screen looked broken and cracked but it turned out it was just the glass screen protector. I heard that the tempered glass screen protectors had trouble adhering to the curved sides so be warned

Yup
Considering that I have a 3 year old brat and a big fat slippery hand, yes I would definitely put on a screen guard
Yes I always have one on every device that I own. I prefer tempered glass, so lets hope that someone makes one thats good quality for it.
Nope, haven't used screen protectors in more than two years. They take away the premium feel of the screen. Gonna get me a case though, since I will be carrying it around in bags an such

Anyone tried one of those spray-on screen protectors?
I remember linustechtips did a review on one with impressive results. I think it was called Liquid Armor.

Tried that Crystal spray on on my phone, did not notice any difference. Phone still got scratched .
I won't be using a Screen protector on the Nexus 9, currently have the tab S 8.4 and i use it without a SP. Screen feels so much better without that plastic on top.
I am not one for film screen protectors, but I do like the glass screen protectors
I guess the good thing about a glass protector for the Nexus 9 is that you don't have to worry about the sunken button effect that you'd get on an ipad.
Are there any for sale yet for the Nexus 9 ?

There's several hands-on videos that comment on how much glare the Nexus 9 puts out. You think any of these tempered glass screens could help reduce glare?

No idea..... Most likely will not but you never know...
Also the glass screen protector has been shipped as of this morning
I had the same question too.. The only company that claims to have anti-glare coating and a tempered glass screen protector is BodyGuardz. I talked to them earlier and they had no plans to release a Nexus 9 version, nor they have a UK presence.
Also, I havent seen many out yet (which makes sense) but there are a few on amazon. I was wondering if you came across any 'good brand' tempered glass screen protectors I can order now and hopefully will also help in reducing glare.
