[Q] change default dialer keypad language - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My phone language is english and my contacts names are hebrew.
I really like kitkat default dialer,
but since the dailer letters are english T9 "auto complete" doesnt work for me,
is there a way to change dailer language like in exdialer?

I would suspect if you change the language of the phone that it would automaticallychange the dialer language; I can't confirm this because if I change the language i would never get back . But no you can't just change the language of the stock dialer by itself.

change dialer language
you can do that by installing xposed and then in xposed download and install "app settings" it allows you to change locale for specific app.
if you are not familiar with xposed it would be better if you read on it a little.
im not using a nexus 5 but this should work for most phones

Have the same problem, but with another language. Locale doesn't work for it.

I'm here with the same problem

Google Latitude - Language UI

Hi to all,
Does anybody know how to change UI language in Google Latitude?
Mine reads regional settings and gives me whole UI in local language, and I prefer it in english.
But there is no way to change the language.
It is so annoying that I am on the verge to uninstall Google Latitude because of that.
Thanx in advance!
Google will per default direct you to your local language. I think it is possible to "trick" it to get you an English version
Just look around at the download page, should be a "change language" option for the download.
Google Latitude
Sorry Snapphane, but you are not right.
I have downloaded Google Latitude using my computer with all english settings.
Also, I tried to change regional settings on the phone, and if the settings US, then the program 'speaks' english. When I change it back to other country, it changes UI language to that country.
I was asking if there are hidden settings (some registry tweaks, maybe) to keep Google Maps (Latitude) using english for UI.
Delete the language files that are in the GoogleMaps folder.
I had the same problem so before installation of GoogleMaps I changed the regional settings to English. After installation I deleted the language files (only kept "gmm_launcher.dll", "gmm_setup.dll" and "GoogleMaps.exe".) and changed the regional settings to my native. GoogleMaps stayed English
Works!
Thank you Bulls-eye1!!!
Well, that was easier than I thought. Nice solution m8, thanks!

[Q] Import dictionary into stock keyboard

I always used swiftkey on my N1. Now I have a Nexus S and I really like the stock keyboard, but there is no Dutch dictionary on the Nexus S.
Is it possible to import a custon(Dutch) dictionary into the stock keyboard? That would be really nice
You could try this package I created from CyanogenMOD 7 for Nexus S. It can however be installed on ModacoROM as I have and probably also stock nexus s.
It has the dutch keyboard/autocorrect hidden under 'Italian'. I didn't know how to get it under its own language. So I abused the Italian language for that.
I'm not sure if you need root either to install, anyway good luck with it.
If you have successfully installed it, you'll get another Android keyboard in your language and keyboard menu. Select the languages you want and Italian for the dutch dictionary. Please be aware you need to set them in both settings when you click "Input Languages" (it asks you to complete action using).
Should be fairly safe, you can remove it under manage applications and then choosing "Android keyboard". The stock keyboard that ships with the device itself and can't be removed afaik.
good luck.

Is it possible to add custom keyboard languages (that are defined in the SDK) without root?
I think you would need to build/compile it from AOSP. What I'm doing is probably quick and dirty but it works (I'm still new to this android development). Think you need root though to install this.
If you like I could try and make another APK with Swedish keyboard/autocorrect hidden under the Italian language.

That would be awesome!
Oke. Here is the Swedish APK. Select Italian 2 times when you try to select the input languages (for each action).
Might need a reboot to have it work, didn't need it here. Also I'm on a rooted nexus s and haven't tested it without root.
I'v tried removing it from application management, which works. After that you are back to the stock keyboard. Looks safe so far
have fun..
note: I used adb install LatinIME.apk to install this.

Thanks, I've tried but can't get it to work. What do you mean with: Select Italian 2 times when you try to select the input languages (for each action)?
EDIT: Okay, understood. Still doesn't work. Unrooted also.
Hmm.. So it installs and you get another android keyboard in your settings menu right?
What might help is installing another keyboard (free from market). set that as default (select it as input method in browser for instance). go to settings and select the recently installed android keyboard i gave you. deselect all languages in the input languages menu (once for each action popup). close settings, open it up again. select english and italian in input languages (once for each action popup) and close settings.
now open text messaging or anything else that uses the keyboard. select the android keyboard as input method. hold the spacebar and select italian. it should now give you swedish predictions.
i'v seen it here also that it at times didn't give me dutch, but after redoing all the settings it fixed it.
just make sure you have enabled the keyboard in the settings menu and set the settings for it like i said. if it doesn't work i don't know.
Is there any other way to get, for example, the Dutch dictionary in the Gingerbread keyboard, without having to abuse one of the existing languages? Can't you just add additional languages?
I'm using a Nexus S, and I heard that there are versions of the phone that download additional keyboards during the initial setup, based on the location of the phone (network, country, ...), if they have an internet connection available, see for example this screenshot: h~t~t~p~:~/~/~plixi~.~com~/~p~/~67798426 (can't post a link, so just delete all ~ chars).
I'm also wondering if this method won't cause problems when you get an OTA upgrade (e.g. to 2.3.3). Will you need to do it all over again? :-s
Thanks!
Has there been any progress on this? I don't know why android doesn't just include all languages possible. If an iPhone can do it, surely our phone should!
I heard that Android 2.3.3 adds support for a lot more languages, also on the US/UK Nexus S, including Dutch ...

Keeping the Hebrew T9 dialer

I just changed my rom to ViperS 1.2.1 Sense 4.1
In Sense 4 there is a Hebew T9 dialer when you set the system language to Hebrew.
Now I like my phone in English though I need the T9 dialer to be in Hebrew too
Is there a way to gain the Hebrew T9 dialer with the system language set to English in the Sense dialer?
Excellent question. Looking for this exact solution

This thread is quite old, and I searched for the exact same thing too some time ago - and then I realized I can just use my phone on Hebrew locale all the time, and it won't really matter.
Only option I found is to edit the app itself and inject an "upgraded" version to the ROM instead of the normal one.
Also, there was an article in the Portal about an app called "App Override", which allows application-specific settings to be applied. Maybe by working with him on adding that functionality it could be possible. Worth a shot.

Other languages on MM

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows of any edits (rooted) I can make that would allow the stock MM (6.0.1) to give me all available languages rather than just the stock? I'm looking to add Japanese to my list of languages -- system wide that is, not just input -- but no matter what I do, it only gives me the stock languages. I've tried More Locale which doesn't release the languages to me and Language Enabler. I would love the native Japanese system language and well, the option to use any language I want.
EDIT: Deleting and changing the language.xml in System/csc doesn't work for me either.
Thanks
