[Q] Import dictionary into stock keyboard - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I always used swiftkey on my N1. Now I have a Nexus S and I really like the stock keyboard, but there is no Dutch dictionary on the Nexus S.
Is it possible to import a custon(Dutch) dictionary into the stock keyboard? That would be really nice

You could try this package I created from CyanogenMOD 7 for Nexus S. It can however be installed on ModacoROM as I have and probably also stock nexus s.
It has the dutch keyboard/autocorrect hidden under 'Italian'. I didn't know how to get it under its own language. So I abused the Italian language for that.
I'm not sure if you need root either to install, anyway good luck with it.
If you have successfully installed it, you'll get another Android keyboard in your language and keyboard menu. Select the languages you want and Italian for the dutch dictionary. Please be aware you need to set them in both settings when you click "Input Languages" (it asks you to complete action using).
Should be fairly safe, you can remove it under manage applications and then choosing "Android keyboard". The stock keyboard that ships with the device itself and can't be removed afaik.
good luck.

Is it possible to add custom keyboard languages (that are defined in the SDK) without root?

I think you would need to build/compile it from AOSP. What I'm doing is probably quick and dirty but it works (I'm still new to this android development). Think you need root though to install this.
If you like I could try and make another APK with Swedish keyboard/autocorrect hidden under the Italian language.

That would be awesome!

Oke. Here is the Swedish APK. Select Italian 2 times when you try to select the input languages (for each action).
Might need a reboot to have it work, didn't need it here. Also I'm on a rooted nexus s and haven't tested it without root.
I'v tried removing it from application management, which works. After that you are back to the stock keyboard. Looks safe so far
have fun..
note: I used adb install LatinIME.apk to install this.

Thanks, I've tried but can't get it to work. What do you mean with: Select Italian 2 times when you try to select the input languages (for each action)?
EDIT: Okay, understood. Still doesn't work. Unrooted also.

Hmm.. So it installs and you get another android keyboard in your settings menu right?
What might help is installing another keyboard (free from market). set that as default (select it as input method in browser for instance). go to settings and select the recently installed android keyboard i gave you. deselect all languages in the input languages menu (once for each action popup). close settings, open it up again. select english and italian in input languages (once for each action popup) and close settings.
now open text messaging or anything else that uses the keyboard. select the android keyboard as input method. hold the spacebar and select italian. it should now give you swedish predictions.
i'v seen it here also that it at times didn't give me dutch, but after redoing all the settings it fixed it.
just make sure you have enabled the keyboard in the settings menu and set the settings for it like i said. if it doesn't work i don't know.

Is there any other way to get, for example, the Dutch dictionary in the Gingerbread keyboard, without having to abuse one of the existing languages? Can't you just add additional languages?
I'm using a Nexus S, and I heard that there are versions of the phone that download additional keyboards during the initial setup, based on the location of the phone (network, country, ...), if they have an internet connection available, see for example this screenshot: h~t~t~p~:~/~/~plixi~.~com~/~p~/~67798426 (can't post a link, so just delete all ~ chars).
I'm also wondering if this method won't cause problems when you get an OTA upgrade (e.g. to 2.3.3). Will you need to do it all over again? :-s
Thanks!

Has there been any progress on this? I don't know why android doesn't just include all languages possible. If an iPhone can do it, surely our phone should!

I heard that Android 2.3.3 adds support for a lot more languages, also on the US/UK Nexus S, including Dutch ...

[KEYBOARD] Another stable CIME keyboard

I've seen in the forum before there's a link to download the CIME keyboard which extracted from Acer. But that apk have a lot of bug. It's just only work in full-screen Hand Writing. I took a look around and can't discovered anything about this thread for a long time. Few days ago, I walked in to the mobile center in Xiamen, China then asked them that how to make the Nexus One to be able use CIME with stable Hand Writing mode. They look at my phone and said that taking a breath. Not too long, they return me Nexus One CM5.0.6 with fully functional of Chinese Hand Writing mode. No more waiting, I use Linda Manager to back up it for you.
How to install
1.Copy the file to your SD card.
2.Menu > Settings >Language & Keyboard
3.Select language & region to be 中文 next one from the last that's mean Simplifies Chinese.
4.Launch Linda Manager what can download from Market.
5.Browse the apk and install it.
6.Back to Menu > Settings >Language & Keyboard (Please use your sensitivity to go to setting because of this time it's Chinese).
7.Check at new check-box to on.
8.reboot. <-- recommend
9.Change your language & region back to English (I used Thai-ไทย it go error just can use with Chinese and English but the another I haven't try).
10.Enjoy with CIME. This version has also extracted from Acer V.1.0.0
Summary
Do not forget to install on Chinese region mode unless you do, you will face with force close in keyboard setting.
PS.Sorry for my bad Eng. I'm Thai.
Thanks. This works great.. !
This is actually a pretty stable Chinese handwriting IME. Much better than the one extracted from HTC and it's a APK....Love it..Thanks a lot for sharing..
Just a side note, any file manager will do it, there is no need to use Linda manager.
I didn't changed my region setting to Simpfied Chinese and still able to set it up.
Yes, it can set up but can't adjust some setting.

[Q] AnySoftKeyboard problem

I am using stock ROM with TnT lite. I really like the stock keyboard but there is an issue for me. I cant write all the characters defined by Windows 1250 (means Slovak, Czech, Hungarian...). I installed AnySoftKeyboard but I cant use it. It is fully installed, I can configure it but I cant switch it on. It always remains unchecked in Keyboard and language settings. Can somebody help me to:
1. How can I support the stock keyboard with those Win 1250 characters, or
2. Switch on the AnySoftKeyboard.
Thanks, guys.
PS Many different characters are accessible by long pressing the key (like French) but not those needed by me.
On TNT and TNT lite, you can check/enable the keyboard under Settings, Keyboard, but the setting won't "stick".
You have to manually copy the .apk file for the /data/app directory to /system/app directory.
To do that, you'll need to at least temporarily root your Gtab. You can do that using z4root.
Once it's (temporarily) rooted, you'll need to move the APK file or files, using either something like root explorer or using a terminal app and command line (mount /system R/W, then copy the file(s)).
Look in the Themes and Apps forum here. There are a number of threads that discuss how to do the file move.
Then, I don't know about TNT lite, but on TNT, when you long press on a text box, it's suppose to popup a selection box to let you select the keyboard, but it doesn't. I have a small app that will let you do that if you PM me.
I don't know about the languages thing, but usually, the app developer has a language pack separately on market for various languages.
Jim
Thanks, it works. I can use the both keyboards now. Just the switching between them is a problem as you mention. IT works in word but Excel. I'll PM you.
BTW don't you know if is it possible to download language packs for the TnT stock keyboard?

Keyboard digits and symbols close any app
I upgraded to TNT Lite 4.2. All seemed well except in any application that I need a keyboard when I try to type a number or some symbols the app I'm trying to type into just closes out. It doesn't happen with text. Since the upgrade, I'm showin Tap & Tap, Android and NI Keyboards. There is no box to tick a selection of keyboards. I have tried selection each one and then typing a number but no luck. Can anyone help with this? I can't locate the apk files for these keyboards but I do have root access. What is the UNC file path for the keyboard apk files?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Adding languages to Gingerbread keyboard?

Guys!
Does anybody know how to add more languages for Gingerbread keyboard in TNT_Lite 4.2.2?
Actually I need Russian.
I installed MoreLocale and chose Russian - it translated all menus, but didn't give opportunity to pick Russian in Input languages setting...
I appreciate any advices.
Thanks!
You need to find the libjni_cyrillicime.so lib file the libjni_latinime.so is the english file. It needs to go into the /system/lib/ dir.
Didn't help me.
I even installed Gingerbread keyboard from market - but can't choose it from Language&Keyboard setting.

What ROM are you on.
Vegan, and Adam allow changing of the keyboards easily, TNT-lite (due to TNT) did not till 4.2.0
On the google search bar long press, and the selection menu will show up allowing you to select the gingerbread keyboard.
the gingerbread keyboard was installed by default in 4.2.1 TNT-Lite, 4.2.2 added the adam keyboard.
Hope that makes it clearer
I use TNT_lite 4.2.2 (latest one).
And yes, I know that I can choose between keyboards.
Bot none of them has option "Russian".
I tried to replace libjni_latinime.so to one that comes with my Nexus One - didn't help.
Adam keyboard setting crashes every time that I touch Languages button.
If I install any keyboard from Market - I can't activate it in Settings menu.
Checkbox doesn't become checked.
So I still have the same problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864036
Seek and Ye shall find.
The GB keyboard thread.
Doesnt look like cyrillic has been hacked in yet
Finally found Russian Gingerbread keyboard here - http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=207680
Put it in /system/app an fixed permissons.
Works perfect!!!

[Q] French Canadian keyboard on the Nexus S

Hi All
I live in Quebec and I just got myself a shiny NS. However, there is no option for a french canadian keyboard in the settings, only the azerty french keyboard. Is there an easy way to enable this language?
Thanks!!!
I don't live in Quebec but I wouldn't mind knowing the answer to this. I've read somewhere that Slideit keyboard from the market has a French Canadian Keyboard but I really wouldn't count on it til I tried it and last time I checked you had to pay for it. The only one I've tried is from the seeARM swype keyboard from his Galaxy S JL2 Rom but how to get it to work on the Nexus S I'm not sure but it was nice to have on the SGS.
edit: I have swipe beta on the Nexus S so maybe it can be ported over....not sure how but if someone here has any ideas it very well could work. seeARM hasn't been around in quite a while but might be able to run it on the Nexus somehow.

Swype already works fine on the Nexus S. You cannot distribute Swype, it's illegal on XDA.
Check out keyboard alternatives, they most likely have what you're looking for. Alternatives such as Smart Keyboard Pro and Swiftkey.
I wasn't trying to distribute Swype, just trying to mention the only french canadian keyboard I'd seen so far....as being french canadian anyway since they are few and far between.
Thanks. I am aware of the alternative keyboards available but I would have liked to stick with the stock keyboard as I find it pretty nice!
I'll report here if I find a way.
Hi, I'm from Quebec too and I'll share some information that might be useful to other French-canadians Nexus S users.
First, I noticed the Nexus S doesn't have a French (Canada), which can be an issue with the News and Weather widget. I will explain how to take care of that.
Put your system language in French by going in the following menus
Settings > Language & keyboard > Select language > Français
Now you'll notice that the language is set to Français (France)
The problem now is that by having this language set, you automatically get an AZERTY keyboard.
Install the following application (Using the Barcode Scanner application from the Android Market)
Once it's installed, you'll have a new application called Paramètres régionaux. Open it up, press on the context menu button and press on Add Locale.
Put the following informations in the Add Locale popup:
Label: français (Canada)
Language: fr
Country: CA
Variant: <empty>
Now, to have a QWERTY keyboard, go in the following menus
Paramètres > Langue et clavier > Clavier Android > Langues de saisie > English (United States) (only have this keyboard checked)
Now you should have a french operating system, with a QWERTY keyboard and the News and Weather (Actualités et Météo) application that now gets Canadian-related news instead of France news.
Thanks for the great post. However, I wanted an english operating system with a qwerty with french and english dictionnary/autocomplete!
I finally found a way : install CM7. With this ROM you have all the dictionnary/locale you want!

Still nothing ?
Same new nexus S ( add to that a fresh scratch on the flimsiest screen I've ever touched ) but no french canadian keyboard. I'm can't stand the french OS.
But still need to type in french...
Nothing new ?
Thanks !
Before flashing CM7, I briefly used an app named "Gingerbread Keyboard" or something similar, that was free on Android Market and had a number of additional locales like French Canada (so QWERTY), or French QWERTZ which is used in Switzerland.
Another option with the stock rom (with alt. recovery so as to be able to mount /system in read-write mode) is to use adb to remove LatinIME.apk from /system/data and push the one from cm7 into the same location.
To get the apk you'll need to download cm7, unzip it and find the apk there.

My understanding is that you can use the English keyboard (qwerty) with french autocorrect. You can add additional languages in the keyboard settings and then toggle languages by swiping the spacebar. The French Canadian keyboard is just a qwerty with extended character set for accented letters. Your keyboard wont show the extended characters anyway due to the size.

Stock Keyboard issues with Nougat

Hello,
Nougat update on S7 has completely f**** up my stock keyboard.
With Marshmallow:
I was able to type at high speed with relevant bilingual autocorrection whatever language (french/english) was set on the keyboard.
The return key was allowing me to cancel the auto correction by leaving the typed words.
With Nougat:
No bilingual autocorrect, I have to select the right language anytime I am switching fomr english to french otherwise the keyboard corrects everything into the language set on with the space bar key.
I tried to use Swiftkeyboard but not a big fan of it since question marks is not accessible straight (have to long press the . key) + the numeric pad is awful, tiny and showing plenty of symbol (when it comes to enter only digits) and the € key is sent to page 3 of the keyboard which is annoying for euro countries and there is no .com key neither."
Even if it does bilingual autocorrection and there's plenty of customization capabilities, all mentioned above cannot be changed.
Is there anyway to get back to the well performing stock keyboard without root ?
Thank you
This happened to me as well. Unfortunately, I still haven't found a fix for that. Deleting the app data/cache for the appropriate apps didn't help. So anyone else any idea?

Umlauts: ä, ö, ü
(I know you can achieve these by long tapping the letter but I want it right on the keyboard.)
It doesn't even learn your typing from your other app like fb or email..
Stock Marshmallow keyboard was way more customizable i.e offensive words/learn from other apps...

Hi guys! Same for me! I use 2 languages and the autocorrect is a pain. Maybe Samsung had a 3rd party work on The Marshmallow keyboard and now the contract is over? They really ****ed up big time!
I cant add short cuts to my stock keyboard. To type my name i eould type vcl and my entire long ass name pops up. I cant figure it out. HELP PLEASE, Vinny

Same thing for me, I usually can change the language when SMS'ing between English and Vietnamese. Now I no longer have that choice and don't know how to fix it either.
A lot of other issues:
+ When using Waze for navigation, when I make a phone call after 15' or 30' the screen will return back to Waze, but it's not
+ The quality of sound for both phone talking and music listening is bad (interference noise), and the volume at max level is much lower
+ Very slow to launch new applications
+ Some no response to touch screen.
Tuan
I had my phone trained before to understand French, Italian, and Dutch in addition to my default English. Now, a Dutch keyboard (and ergo dictionary) are not even a choice. There's only seven languages to choose from!
Oh, quick addition: Before flashing with Odin I hard reset my S7 and did set everything up as new. So no incompatibility with any apps or so there shouldn't be any incompatibility with any apps or so.
I am also really annoyed by the N keyboard update. Just got used to the keyboard on MM and started to like it. Even more than gboard or swiftkey.
Does anyone know where I can download the old keyboard? Or which version it was? I want it back. I know that I cannot just install it over the system app, but maybe we can modify the old version and install it as additional keyboard?
I mean getting it back doesn't seem to be a problem, just extract it from any 6.0 rom zip, but installing it/modifying it would be difficult for me.

could you extract the old keyboard apk?
Question: To install the old keyboard app, it is necessary that the package name of the old app is not the same as the one that is currently installed, otherwise it would not let us install it/over. We cannot remove the current system app without root... Is changing the packagename enough? I would try this...
Because here I found a thread that shows how to change the packagename https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2760965
I'll see what I can do.
Patience is a virgin.
So I just noticed that one could download the old version of the com.sec.android.inputmethod.apk on apkmirror.com. So now we just need someone to modify it and make it compatible for Nougat. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Same issues maybe like you guys, really loved the marshmallow keyboard. Maybe someone can make it compatible with nougat.
I upgraded to 7.0 on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. BIG mistake! First my keyboard became mostly unresponsive. Then after a reboot nearly every App button left the screens. Now, I cannot bring them back, because now holding down an APP button to move an App back to the home screen cannot be done. Nothing happens. Other issues are there, but these are the most important.
