I love Android. I love the ability to mod the phone and do many things the carriers and manufacturers don't like us to do. I have a crazy amount of experience in all things modding, from rooting, custom roms/kernels, audio mods, theming, customized apps, Xposed, etc. I've modded every phone I have had to the max. Because of that, I also have a pretty good amount of troubleshooting practice between all the stuff I do for myself and friends, as well as for my customers at my repair shop. I've spent 1000s of hours in the past 4 years reading, researching, testing, modding, fixing various phones and tablets. I've rooted over 100 different kinds of devices, including, but not limited to devices from:
Samsung
HTC
Sony
LG
Motorola
Huawei
Pantech
ZTE
Asus
Acer
Dell
HP
Kindle
Nook
Random no-name Chinese things
etc
etc
Why do you care? Because I want to help you enjoy your phone like I do. I know many people would love to take the plunge and root their phones, but are scared because of the potential to break things, and the technical terms that just don't make sense without hours of reading. So, I am offering personalized help, no strings attached, to get your phone performing and behaving like you would like. Use my experience to your advantage, and in return, I get to give back to the community a bit, as well as getting the chance to learn even more. No matter how many times you go through rooting and customizing something, you always learn a little something or pick up on a new mod/tweak/setting that you didn't know about before, as well as maybe make another friend or 3.
With that out of the way, if you would like to take me up on my offer, please hit me up on Hangouts or a message with how you would like to chat. I would like to keep it as much 1 on 1 as possible, so I can give the help needed without getting distracted by a thread going everywhere. There are plenty of threads for generic root / modding help, and I prefer IM type chatting for things of this nature.
Hope to hear from you soon!

I've been doing tech support for a few years now between working the Internet and Phone support lines for Comcast and I run a little cell repair shop where I help people a lot as well. Have to have a ton of patience to walk people through how to get online when they don't even know if they have a router or where it would be (or even if they are connected wirelessly or not - I wish I were kidding). It's also good to keep in touch with new and/or inexperienced users because it's easy to get comfortable in your knowledge and assume everyone knows the "easy" stuff. I've also been kicking around the idea of teaching a Community Education class for Android 101 in my area (Denver).

I can understand that.
I'm bored and at home today, so I have time to help. Bring it!
I'll start off.....
Let's say I want to stay stock'ish..... Plain old 4.4.2 with the bare minimum of google stuff added in...
Can I flash system.img, but delete everything in system/apps, and system/priv-apps before first boot?
I would flash system.img, then banks gapps, core. Would that provide a "stripped down" stock rom? No bloat? Then just add in necessary apps from the play store....
Thanks for everyone doing this..... hopefully it will be a great Q&A thread....

There already is an ask anything thread. I don't think that's the intent of this one. And, no you can't do what you're thinking. How are you going to delete the apps out of the system.img before you boot?
At that point, it's easier to just root the stock rom and remove what you want with a root uninstaller or file manager with root access. Add in the Xposed Framework if you need any little extra tweaks without messing up anything that can't be resolved from removing the tweak and rebooting. Or there's a multitude of minimalist roms in the Development forum.
I understand that there a lot of ROMs to choose from.... I just wanted to make my own.....
The apps can deleted in recovery.... after the boot loader flashes system.img, boot straight to recovery, and delete away...
I wasn't knowledgeable enough to determine if the first boot of the ROM would install anything extra that would not delete after the boot. (Similar to windows registry)
Thanks for the quick answer..... much appreciated.

The things that would get installed that you can't uninstall after it is booted are things you should not be able to do so at risk of messing with the phone's functionality, or worse. There aren't going to be any benefits of removing apps in recovery vs doing it while it is booted. If you really wanna go that route, just download a stock prerooted rom and use 7zip to remove whatever apps and files from the zip that you want before you put it on the phone to flash.
Thank you very much.... I'll go that route....

I recently rooted and even though I did a ton of research, I destroyed my phone. So here are some tips to avoid turning your phone into a paper weight.
First thing you should do after rooting is create a backup. If I had done this I would still have a phone. To do this boot into recovery (look up how to do this for your phone) and go to backup, create backup.
DO NOT: Trust titaniumbackup to backup system apps or preinstalled apps. IT WILL NOT WORK.
DO NOT: Randomly uninstall system apps even if you do not use them. Many system apps are used for other applications or are required to run in order for the phone to work properly. Some system apps can be installed, but just research it before you uninstall. I found, the hard way, that it is safer to flash a new rom to get more space than to uninstall things that might be important.
If you flash a ROM and have issues with connectivity, internet, sms, etc., it might be because you have a CDMA phone and the ROM is meant for a GSM phone or vice versa. If you look at the back of your phone and you have an MEID number, you have a CDMA phone. If you have an IMEI number you have a GSM phone. If you think this might be your problem go to settings/about phone/phone identity and see if it tells you a IMEI number or an MEID number and see if it matches the number on the back of your phone.
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask me questions and I will try to answer although I am still somewhat new to all of this. If I helped be sure to click thanks.

I'm sorry if I offended your far superior android abilities with this simple post meant for much less intelligent users like myself, but can I ask you why you are reading a post titled general tips if your expertise extend beyond anything general?
Also if a brilliant "expert" like yourself would have posted a thread like this before, in all likelihood I would not be in the position I am now.
I suggest you get off your high horse and start being a little more accommodating to people who are just learning this stuff.
Thanks for the input. Thanks for helping out us new folks.

So no one ever told you to only flash ROM's made for your phone? And you cant brick your phone by deleting system apps...you get force closes, go to recovery, reflash, good to go.
I want to do everything I can to develop for this phone. What I need from the people here is a stock flash able rom. I have made great progress on this phone but but idk how to build stock roms and at this point I'm not sure I have the mental capacity to learn it.

LOL...
Without a stock ROM, we have been unable to develop much...
What have you developed, here?
Mostly the community is hacking the stock installed rom, and fixing what Motorola has purposefully broken, but with out a few more pieces and a working sbf, you are not going to get a "Stock" ROM.
If you really want to help out go jump into the bootloader unlock forum:

I use cheesecake 4 times a day every day. If I find something I compare it to what others have found.. What have I developed? Nothing more then a headache. Using the bionic safestrap I have been able to recover from 3 soft bricks. 2 of them using adb to push to the phone and 1 using the restore tool. But i had to remount /emmc to /sd-ext. But I think at this point I am done trying anything with this phone.
One more thing.. what can't we use all the stock files I've pulled from the phone to make a flash able zip?

Seems like you know a lot more than all of us who have been working diligently for the last 60 or so days with this phone.... Why don't you give it a try and see if you can create a flash-able zip.
You can't build a flash-able zip, because you can not zip or tar files on the filesystem that are in use, and the kernel has a ton of files open and locked. the backup software gets around this in a couple ways that we really can't do, and backups are useless to make flash-able zip from. That is why we need the sbf or fxz or source code to make a flash-able, zip or ROM.
That is why we have warned everyone over and over and over, about trying things we post, right now. The information is not to try out, it is sharing of the developers, and for those of us working on actually developing solutions for this phone. There have been so many bricks, because people are not listening.... I am actually thinking of trading my phone with a buddy to get out of this, because I am tired of hearing about all the bricking people are doing, and having to help save someone who did something to their phone that they did after we told them not to.
Unless You Know What You Are Doing Don't Try This At Home. Until we get the fxz or sbf files. I am getting tired of saying this...
P.S. doing work on the cheesecake thing does not make you a Developer. Hell I am not an Android Developer, I am a UNIX and Linux Hardware architect and UNIX and LINUX Kernel Developer, so I am am able to use all that, 20 years of experience on the Android kernel, and I have been hacking and working on phones a long time.
Now I know it is great to try things and learn, but while learning, it is best to try things we say are safe first, then once you are more comfortable with certain things, then try something daring, that you know how to do.
I am in no way trying to insult you, just realize that right now, with the little help we have on the experienced development side of things, it is real painful to get things moving forward when people don't listen, or do things they are not ready for and then keep asking for help when they killed their phone in the process.

Yeah if it comes to anywhere close to the OG Atrix board I am out so fast it is not funny.
The thing is that I am most of the time ignoring these posts, but when you 6 people all did something similar, or like the OP did 4 or five things that messed his phone up, because he/they were impatient, you kind of have to tell them, look if you don't like it, get another phone. Heck the OP tried to say he was helping the cause by doing these things, when it was said so many times don't try this....

The funny thing is the "OP" didn't do anything he was told not to due.. Instead he/I tried new approaches and have actually been able to recover from a few soft bricks at this point. We get places from trying new things not by talking down to those that try them. I'm trying to help as I own the phone too. I am not in any way "under-educated". I am a .Net developer and I am doing my best in my free time to help the community by opening up this phone to its full potential. Now, Am I impatient.... Hell Yes.. I want CM7 and ICS now. Will I get it now?.. No, but i'm trying to get the rest of you on your way. I cant believe you would try to push someone so willing away..
A better way to go about it would be to post your discoveries and share them to help others out instead of demanding things you need.

We aren't pushing anyone away that is willing to help and we welcome everyone that is willing to hel. But when you experiment know that we might not be able to help you and we have no way back to stock. By experimenting we found root, the bionic's bootstrap and we will have to continue to experiment. Part of progress is by finding out what works and what doesn't.
We need to all work together and not against each other. But with that said if you look at the amount of recent posts with people experiencing problems and calling for help is because they didn't do any research before hand and now they are asking for help for something they could have very well prevented by patiently doing a little homework.
With the progress you have said to have made, start a new thread about it explaining the procedures you went about to recover from the soft bricks so others can benefit from them as well. I can promise you we are all very interested.

I know this is a modding community so the majority of answers are just going to say root root root! But in all honesty, if you are brand new to Android, get used to stock for a bit before you jump into modification. Spend your time reading about your specific device while you play with it and if people are happy with their devices rooted and the process isn't too intensive for you, then give it a shot.

Thanks for all the input. I was trying to be sure if there was a step by step process on what to do.I am fairly new to android phones and want to learn the ins and outs. I'm searching for a new phone now and it seems like the ones I like need something to be done to them before I can use them. So I was trying to be sure of the process before I screwed something up. I like the suggestion of learning the phone 1st which will probably lead me to a name brand phone.I'm currently with boost mobile so my options are limited. Once again thanks for the info.
1. Root
*unlock bootloder* optional
2. remove bloatware
3. read about custom roms
4. go crazy modding
Enjoy stock for a while, Oh and heres a tip, On the process of rooting, You can easily brick your phone.
Meaning Of Brick - It will no longer boot up; You have to replace it.
Well, actually I'm just looking
I googled "Rooted phone, what next?" and got several helpful sites and threads. Most of which lead back to XDA. Although I had a fairly clear goal in mind; I wanted ICS.

Can someone with good experiance, possible write up a 'doc', or start a thread on what n00bs can or maybe should do with various things once they for instance root them etc.? (In this instance for the gt-p5113 specifically, if you would.) sure it will be opinion, etc. but for instance I just rooted my samsung galaxy tab 2 10.1 gt-p5113 (by the excellent docs here btw, I think they worked flawlessly.) But I just do not know what to do next.....it is freshly rooted.
and by next I do not mean things to use and do WITH it....I know somewhat some of the things I want to do there, but for instance making a backup...probably a good idea, but I do not really know the best way to go about it....or installing super user...it was mentioned, but I have no clue really how, or if they were talking about another device or needing to or not. or installing a firewall or some other type of protection. I don;t know...I guess I am expecting someone to do some thinking for me, and maybe that isn;t always the best thing to do, but it'd sure help me thats for sure, because I'm sorta weary at this point and not yet comfortable messing with it, sorta and could use some verification/validation of thinking with less of the fear of bricking my tech. I literally just rooted it like 5 minutes ago.

It will take a little more than 5 minutes to do your research.
My experience over the years has taught me that doing your own research is far more rewarding than having someone else do it for you and hand everything to you on a plate.
You can take it at your own pace, and you will get a far more rewarding experience of your tech if you put the effort in. Not only will you learn more, but you will discover other things as you search for the answers. This is truly mind expanding stuff, but it requires effort.
And that's the point of Android I find - if you don't want to make the effort and you want someone to do everything for you then buy a product from Apple. They are the masters at making things easy...as long as you are prepared to do things their way, and not expect too much from your device.
Android is flexible and configurable, but that means thinking, exploring and discovering things yourself.
If you're not comfortable then don't do anything. Read, read and read some more until you get comfortable - then act. That is the safest way to avoid problems as well as rewarding you with knowledge and understanding.
Good luck in your quest.

I am sure you have gained all your knowledge and earned it on your own, or if not, on this subject specifically, it wasn't any help from me, so neither you nor anyone else owe me anything.

Ok, go in to recovery mode volume up+power and see what it loads, if it is cwm, then you can select backup, I backup to my extsd because it takes up a lot of space on internal sd, then reboot. If not, then search for install cwm on the forum. I can explain later, but am on vacation visiting the parents, so I can't guarantee how timely my response will be.

You can do it in a few ways.....
1.st.... if you have custom recovery, reflash a new rom! Done, your phone is clean!
2.nd.... if you don't have a custom recovery, you can use SP Flash Tool, and flash a custom recovey, then flash the rom, or, if you find a suitable rom online, you can directly flash it with SP Flash Tool.
3.rd.... if you don't wanna bother yourself with flashing.....then, here is a quick fix....
Install Titanium Backup Pro version
Enter Titanium Backup and find Time Service and Monkey Test
Freeze them
The buggers won't cause other issues
Hope this helped
Good Luck
Eureka!!!
After two weeks of research and study I know how to remove it completely out of phone or tablet without flashing. I got rid of it completely on my Lenovo Stock rom tablet yesterday.
So if anyone with a little knowledge of android needs my help feel free to contact me

Normal way of doing things on xda is sharing a fix if you have it, especially that you have such a wonderful track record here.
Why don't you guys ask for a raise from Tim Cook, so that you can polish a little (actually a lot) your trolling skills, so that perhaps one or two people can take you seriously for a change? And remember: never say 'i got a virus on our Android device' because it gives you up right there. Oh, and try to open a sleeper account instead of one which is 1 day old, this way you'll have more credibility. Cheers.
Dear sir.

I don't even know what raise are you talking about ? I'm not trolling. I had this virus in my tablet and I also asked on some other forums but what I got is that I have to flash my device which I could not so I went into deep and with collection of information from here and different places I managed to remove it without flashing.
And as for sharing a fix I will definitely share it. Actually I'm not good in steps writing but I will definitely will try to write as how I did.
Please Help

Looks like a nasty virus according to the Norton community.
https://community.norton.com/en/forums/monkey-test-time-service-malware-s
yes i need ur help too much. plz tell me how to remove them on my email- [email protected]
You may want ro take your email off the pubilc forum post unless you are just.looking to increase your spam by 10000 fold at the very least change the format i.e .com = dot com
I am with Optimupro on this. It seems very questionable when someone or a few with all new accounts have an issue and then rather than posting the fix say email or pm me like they want to keep it a secert or its to special to post? Gives the grandious impression. Froma practical sense, why you a.person rather type it out or c&p it over and over for.each corispondance they recieve and require the person to wait for it to be on their schedule rather.than just post it in the forum its associated with?? Sorry but that just strikes any seasoned forum users anywhere as odd and raises a caution flag. Its much more nirmal and frankly polite courtious forum manners to post fixes to problems openly so all that search can find it long after you are no longer on this site?
Not saying there is trolling but it sure raises a flag given the kinds of posts that have been trollings in the past on all sorts of forums. But I try to error.on the side of hoping its just an oversite or ignorance to how things are done on oopen knowledge sharing forums such as xda is.
