Random Hangups/Dropped Calls on Nexus 4 4.4.2 and now on Nexus 5 4.4.2! HELP! - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was getting random hangups and dropped calls on the Nexus 4 4.4.2. I thought that it was the phone, so I switched to the Nexus 5 but I started getting random hangups again. The phone just hangs up in the middle of a conversation! I'm wondering whether it is:
a) a problem with the Nexus phones in general
b) a problem with Android 4.4.2
c) a problem with the Fido/Rogers network/frequency in my area.
Ideas anyone? I don't think these problems happened when on Jellybean on the Nexus 4.
I also have a jittery bluetooth streaming that disconnects and reconnects constantly, but that is another issue I guess...

This happens to me every so often, but I always thought it was me hanging up on people. I have high cheek bones & if I laugh or whatever, I assumed I was hanging up on people...?

sounds like an issue with your mobile carrier if you're seeing it on two different phones

If you are not using LTE, try to use 3G only mode from settings. I had the same issue and so far its solved

I think it is related to proximity sensor. I face this issue a lot and I only have 3G.

I would agree, if it's occurring on different devices, it sounds like a carrier issue. Wouldn't be a bad idea to consult your wireless carrier for a new microsim for your device since it's the only factor that carried over between the two devices. Should be free I would assume.

From what I can see, this is a common problem on 4.4.2 and/or the Nexus 4 and 5:

Upon reflection, I realize that the dropped calls began with 4.4-4.4.2 on the Nexus 4 and then also on the Nexus 5. I installed a new LTE micro-sim on the Nexus 5 but the dropped calls persisted.
My guess is that it's not the carrier because I was not getting dropped calls on 4.3 on the Nexus 4. It's the software or the phones themselves.

Perhaps- but for reasons explained above, this is a problem with the software and/or the phones. This can't be a carrier-related issue because I was not getting it on 4.3.

I an using the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, both with KitKat 4.4.2, with no dropped calls.
The radio baseband was changed in 4.4.2.

Anybody still having data issues?

I've been using my Rogers HOX ever since it came out but always had random data drops. Tried all kinds of radios (with or without RIL) and all kinds of roms and the issue is still there. Losing data is not the biggest issue but it also drops the battery real quick because it keeps trying to connect.
Anybody ever find a solution to this?
I'm using the HOX on Straight Talk and lately I have noticed that when I have WiFi on for a while, assuming it stays connected, I lose mobile data. The only thing that bring it back is toggling airplane mode or rebooting the phone.
I am on Jellybean, and I am not sure if the issue was present in the stock ROM's.
Yep still having the same problem on AT&T with every combination of Kernel/ROM/Radio you can think of. I can also say that it isn't a "rooted only" problem because a coworker is having the same issues on 100% stock software. There's always that ONE THING that keeps my phone experiences from being perfect. Grrrrrrrr........

Stock 2.20 on Straight Talk. Have to toggle Airplane occasionally. Especially in North Little Rock. ::shrugs::
OP, have you restored your stock setup to see if the issue persists? Basic question, but for the sake of a starting point.
After so long, finaly found the problem. I don't know if it'll be the same for everyone but the problem was Swiftkey keyboard. The moment I uninstalled it, the problem did not reoccur.
I have the same problem and I can assure you its not the phone, I have used many android phones, iPhones, and regular phones on rogers 3G network and they all have the data drops in general like dropping to 1 bar and no service once and while.
You might want to switch your network to wcdma/gsm instead of wcdma/gsm/LTE. If you dont have the correct APN for the rogers lte network it will keep searching for the lte nrtwork causing the data drop. As soon as I turned my lte toggle off the network stopped dropping randomly though I still get those random data drops caused by the network

We had this issue with the rezound, it actually occurred because you flashed different radios.
You had to flash a ruu or a modified one without the system image. See my SIG
So try flashing a ruu, this doesn't explain someone with a stock phone having issues but I bet that's just tower issues
I don't have any of these issues

Tried all of the listed solutions and nothing worked. I know it's not the network because I don't have the problem with my Note II. Swiftkey was the issue for me, once removed, the issue never reoccurred.

Wow, you might be onto something here. I just installed SwiftKey last night and immediately started having issues. Data has been off-and-on with different versions of different ROMs, and never suspected that my issues may lie within an app that I was using. I was mucking about with radio ROMs and a million other settings, never realizing that SwiftKey was installed right around the time I started having issues on each ROM.
I'm going to jump back to CM10 this evening and see if this was my issue.
THANK YOU in advance! (Thanks button has been hit!) Nice work!
You gotta be sh***ing me! After all this time scouring xda and numerous other sites.starting my own tread it was SwiftKey all along? Wtf? I did a thousand different things. Nothing worked, took off Swiftkey, bam, flawless. I've got a T-mobile GS3 incase anyway was wondering, no, apparently it's not just with htc or AT&T/Rodgers. Weird though cuz my wife has a AT&T GS3 with Swiftkey and has no issues whatsoever... Did you dl your version from the playstore or from a 3rd party? Thanks a million for posting your solution. This was absolutely killing me. God do I hate this stock keyboard though...

[Q] Most temperamental phone I’ve ever owned

I’ve had my One S for 4 weeks now and every week brings a different problem plus it would appear to be worse since the 4.0.4 update.
1. Intermittent microphone problems.
2. Intermittent reboots with error reports.
3. Mobile data dropping out or won’t switch off or back on.
4. Complete loss of network signal after long period of shut down.
5. Aeroplane mode locked the phone completely requiring a reboot.
Don’ know whether to send back to the store who might not find anything wrong because most of the problems are intermittent, or contact HTC ???
Wish I had stuck with my One V!!!!
I don't have those issues, of course on viper's rom.
Can you tell us you serial nr. Of your phone?

I have the loss of signal issue, mostly indoors. Never had that issue with my other phones. It is worrying me cause I just purchased this phone on a new contract and only have about 5 more days to decide if i want to keep them or not? With this issue and seeing all the terrible issues in the custom ROM's I am afraid I will hate this phone compared to my GNex. I understand Jellybean has not been officially released yet so there will be issues but is there any ICS ROM's that run without issues? My past experience with less popular phones is we can never get a truly great daily driver. Any reassurance will be greatly appreciated!

Response from HTC UK.
"For further testing, we would ask you to reset the phone without the SIM card in the phone(Hard resetting the phone will delete all data on the phone memory). Once the phone has completed the reset, test the phone with no Gmail or 3rd party applications on the phone. This will then confirm whether it is the phone or 3rd party software.
I am confident that this will resolve your query, in the unlikely event that this does not please call or instant chat to one of our Technical Support Agents who will be waiting to guide you through step by step. Our Contact Details can be found at www.htc.com/uk/contact"
no Gmail!!! I thought this was stock???

I'm having signal issues as well.
I got this phone last Thursday as a replacement to my Galaxy S2.
So far i'm getting less reception in my house than my S2 had.
Also, when I'm at work, it goes from Full 4G service, to NO bars, and then to 2G, and back to Full 4g. WTF?

I hear ya.
It's a shame because I REALLY like this phone. Feels great in the hand, build quality is fantastic, and overall it's super smooth and fast.
I hate to give it up, but I can't have signal issues like this at home. Even the wifi calling has had a couple issues so far.
I need my phone to work, plain and simple.
Thinking I might go with the Galaxy S3. Probably the only phone that will make me not miss this one so much.

I'm quite sure if you went with the Galaxy Nexus you wouldn't miss this phone either.
I suppose you have fought with your service provider just like I am right? HTC is telling me to try a different back cover and/or do a factory reset. they claim they are not hearing any issues like this with this phone. I kind of figured I would have issues because Cincinnati Bell does not get the best phones, I had major issues with their XT720. I should have known better. This is why I just bought the GNex from Google, I was gonna avoid signing a new contract then CBW offered me such a great deal on 5 new phones if I resigned so i went with it.
I just tested calls with my galaxy nexus and the HTC one S by calling each other and I got to say call quality with the HTC is much better. Louder and more clear. But I am running a sound volume tweak for my Gnex and it doesn't prove to be louder with in call volume. I will have to get rid of that tweak and see the difference

Problem is that I don't want to spend the money on the Nexus. I got the One S as a warranty replacement, so I'm not spending any money. I'd have to shell out cash to get the Nexus.

Well if it is a new warranty replacement it comes with a new 12month warranty, sell the one S to earn the money for the GNex. I have both and personally I like the GNex better. So many ROM's and kernels to choose from and none of the issues with the Gnex that i see here with the One S. Besides, by the time the One S get's jellbean, Gnex will be getting Key Lime Pie!
I noticed something else today...
If I look closely at my screen, there seems to be some banding going on, as if there is radio intereference with the screen's signal. Like what happened on old tv's when the signal wasn't coming in perfectly clear.
Anyone else experiencing this???

WiFi issues?

Is anyone else noticing that their WiFi doesn't exactly drop, but just stops working apparently at random?
I notice this when sending a message via Hangouts, it won't send for a minute or two. Just three bouncing dots. My WiFi still shows connected, but the message doesn't send.
Same with Hangouts video chat. It will freeze up on me, and have a poor connection/experience, but when I switch to T-Mobile's network, no issues.
I haven't had this WiFi issue on any other devices in my home. (Droid Incredible, Galaxy Nexus, HP Touchpad w/Jelly Bean).

Artem Russakovskii posted on g+ that the nexus 5 has issues with networks that use a 5 ghz signal. Apparently using another channel solves the problem. Similar to the issues chromecast/nexus 7 has on 5 ghz networks. Changing it is worth a shot, most routers have an option to change it.
edit: (assuming you are using a 5 ghz channel)

Even though my router is not 5 GHz I just went into my phones settings, WiFi, Advanced and changed the WiFi Frequency band from Auto to 2.4 Ghz. Maybe that will help? It seemed to work right away without me having to turn wifi off and on again so there is that. I need to use it awhile though.
Do you have any antivirus programs running? I had to uninstall mine because it was causing wifi issues.

I've been having some pretty terrible Wi-Fi reception. Especially on my school's campus. There will be a router on the ceiling directly above me, and I'll get like one or two bars maybe, and terrible speeds.
Just tried turning off Wi-Fi optimization, maybe it'll work better.
UPDATE: This seems to have fixed it. I just downloaded an app at 6 MB/s from the play store in the same spot I've always had problems.

I am having the same issue with my N5, there's a thread at Android Central discussing this issue: http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-5/329226-nexus-5-wifi-problem-4.html
Basically, if I watch a YouTube video that's at least 5 minutes long, I won't be able to finish it as the video will pause at least one or two minutes after starting. This is not YouTube buffering the video either, the video will just pause forever.
Another test is open up Chrome and type words into the URL bar. Auto suggests will appear, if I keep doing this, sooner or later there will be no auto suggest appearing, suggesting network connection is either dropped or became very slow.
I am connecting to an Asus RT-N16 router in 2.4Ghz N mode. Tried turning off Wifi optimization, and other router settings (20Mhz spread, G only mode, other frequencies, etc) and same problem persists.
Since this problem is not as common, I am suspecting this maybe a router incompatibility between N5 and Asus Rt-N16. Anyone reading this thread, if you are having this (or not) issue, please post your router model + settings. Thanks.
I have (2) N5's, a white one and a black one. The black one is very "flaky" with regards to wifi and battery drain. I initially noticed the problem with battery drain where it would drop 20% in two hours with <1m of screen time. It would also go from 100% to 4% over the course of a day with <50m of screen time. I initially did not use the phone much as I was trying to figure out the drain problem, but now that I have been using it more, I've experienced wifi drop outs, where the signal indicator shows connected with a strong signal. I have never experienced that amount of battery drain or any wifi problems with the white one. Both connect to the same routers. I have an Asus 802.11AC router at home. The only AC devices I have are the N5's and my laptop, but the laptop and white N5 has never had trouble. At work I have several TP-Link 802.11N routers in the ceiling throughout our building and a Netgear 802.11N router in our IT sandbox lab. I've tried changing channels, 2.4 vs 5Ghz, updating router firmware and performing factory resets on my home router and the Netgear at work, all to no avail. I've done factory wipes on both phones many times trying to find some reason for one to behave in such a way where the other does not. All I can come up with is that the black one is defective. What's worse, some days the black one will work just fine on wifi and I'll see expected battery drain.
Another update: I went to Paradise Bakery (sandwich shop with free wifi) to test out the wifi. The N5 connected to the wifi fine, but unable to get pass the 'Agree to EULA' login page. I brought along my work HTC One and it was able to connect and get pass the agreement page with no problems. I am beginning to think there's something wrong with the wifi on my N5.

[Q] In-Call volume issues

What carrier and what kind of network are you on? (I mean out of LTE/Edge/UTMS/1x/EVDO) The theory I have is that it may be signal related.

I am on Sprint. I have good signal strength so I don't think that's an issue. I had an One X and GS4 in the past couple weeks as well and no similar call problems there.
Anything on this? Couple days later and in a completely different location and im getting the same issue. Can't here the person on the other line at times
Update: It also happens on WiFi if that helps.

Bluetooth disconnecting?

I have an android wear watch. G watch R. Never had any issues with it. Since getting S6 the phone will occasionally disconnect for a short while and the reconnect. Wondering if anyone else is experiencing Bluetooth issues?

glad its not just me but sorry you are having issues. I think the Bluetooth is weaker on this phone.
it is really annoying. My watch spends more time disconnected than connected!!

Actually, both the wifi and bluetooth is bugged and keep scanning nearly all times and battery draining quick. I guess some may also experienced wifi and bluetooth disconnection because of this.
My Pebble loses its pairing to my S6 occasionally. Very annoying. Hopefully its fixed in the next firmware update for the S6.
Had the same issue since I got the phone early April.
I was really loving my G Watch R until the S6 has totally ruined the experience. Worked perfectly with my HTC M8.
I know there's a minor update coming v soon which supposedly fixes the messed up RAM management issue. Hopefully it'll fix this incredibly poor Bluetooth issue too. I'm actually surprised a flagship phone got through quality control without them noticing bluetooth and ram management are so badly screwed up.
If they don't fix it, then I'll be even more annoyed if it's true that LG won't enable the wifi on the watch.
Just got the G925FXXU1AOE3 update om my GSM S6 Edge (SM-G925F).
One of the things listed was an improvement in connectivity with accessories so I'm hoping this will be resolved now! So far so good.

Didn't fix sh** on my watch. The first few hours was a false dawn. I have the phone on a desk next to my laptop and within 10cm of my watch and it keeps randomly disconnecting and reconnecting.
Sometimes the phone just will not reconnect and the only way I can reconnect is by turning bluetooth off and back on.
Totally ruined my experience of my watch. Feel like just taking it off now as it's become useless, hoping the latest Android Wear update whenever it comes for the G Watch R may fix the issue but that's wishful thinking as I'm convinced it's a Samsung issue as I had zero issues on my M8.
I use my S6 and my Gear S all the time, never have any issues.
My Tmobile S6 has started doing this again. It did it about a month ago so I did a factory reset which cured it, until yesterday. Now its started again, seemingly out of the blue. Nothing has changed for anything, yet its doing it again. Anyone find a real cure for this? On 5.1.1.
My AT&T S6 still has this issue, any know how to resolve this issue???
I use a moto360 (1st gen). Same issue. Only solution that works for me is a reboot of the phone. The disconnects happen on all my devices, so my car (2015 mercedes) and heartrate monitor (Scosche) have disconnects as well. Therefore this has to be a problem with the S6 itself. Maybe it's not very happy with a 24x7 connection with the watch, as this issue seems to only/mostly affect Android Wear users.
I wish there was an autoreboot app that could reboot the phone every night.
