[Q] Bootanimation isnt working - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
first of all: english is not my main language so pls be gentle! I also hate writing capital letters, so deal with it or gtfo
I'm using a Google Nexus 5 (big surprise) which is rooted. As far as I know boot animations belong into /system/media and are supposed to be an uncompressed zip.
The content should lool like this:
a folder called part0 (and if u want many more part1, part2 etc.) which contains pictures which should be called sth. like 001.png/jpg
a file called "desc.txt" which contains resolution, fps and how often which folder should be played, looks sth like this: "270 480 20p 0 0 part0"
I found a gif on 9gag (9gag.com/gag/azbG7yN) which I tryd getting into a boot animation. I resized all pictures to one size and did everything I could but didnt get it working.
A few hours later i found this Thread on reddit (reddit.com/r/jailbreak/comments/1wc9qw/mutha****in_request_fulfilled_to_whoever_wanted/cf0npe4) where u can find this gif (i.imgur.com/neYbN4t.gif) and even a .zip (dropbox.com/s/8efy1j7hzuzev2s/GlitchyAndroid.zip) which contains alle the single pictures. I tryd again making a working animation but it looks like I'm to damn stupid for it, I will upload my try and hopefilly someone can tell me where my goddamn mistake is.
Sincerly,
DaPutzy
EDIT: I forgot to say that I downloaded other animations which worked correctly, so its definitely my fault!

Did you set the files permissions to rw-r-r
Edit, not sure what the animation is supposed to be bit it's just "Google"

I looked at the zip. Usually there is a part 0 and a part 1 and they're .png files

I tryd other animations with .jpg and .png, they all worked! Do I need more then 1 folder? Is this a must have?? I though I only need one to get it working?

I don't know, I've never created a boot animation
Edit, check your desc.txt. it looks different than what I've seen before.

How about this?
EDIT: Now im getting a white screen followed by a black one,.. then booting is done.
PS: Nexus 5 got a 1080x1920 screen, but can I use every pixel while booting?
EDIT: I used Boot Animation Factory (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678540) this time and it says "Your boot animation contains frames that have indexed colors...." I understand the meaning of this but i have to google how I can change this. At least i got a real Error message for the first time
Common mistakes that people make:
-Wrong compression method: you MUST set the compression method to Store!
-Missing empty line at the end of the desc.txt file: an empty line is needed! Otherwise, the boot animation won't work!
-Frames drawn in wrong color mode: you MUST draw your frames in RGB 8bit or RGB 16bit COLOR MODE!

Oh man why didnt i find that earlier...

YES BABY! I got it! Its working as planed, here it is!

EDIT: I will make it perfect and then I'll post it again.

[Q]Samsung Galaxy S bootscreen

Hello,
I know you guys probably get this answer often but can someone explain to me very slowly and clearly what i'm doing wrong.
I tried to edit the bootscreen of my custom rom (from romkitchen)
I got a file from the interwebz named bootscreen.zip and edited this with my .png
Than i copied it to my phone via BT and used rootexplorer to paste it in system/media i set the permissions to read only and execute... no1 can write it. than i changed rootexplorer back to RO. so now it is in there ( still the good 1 with my .png)
than i closed rootexplorer and tried to reboot, but now it doesn't show my bootscreen nor the bootanimation from romkitchen, but the standard bootscreen from Samsung (the shiny S)
is there something wrong with my bootanimation.zip or am i doing something wrong?
Please help me
PS this image is just the basic one... gonna make a glowing animation of it later on ( with multiple .png's with succeeding numbers right?)....... i hope...
-EDIT-
Ok so i think i found out what the problem is... the bootanimation.zip is wrong i just examined a bootscreen from a romkitchen .tar and that has a different structure, because this one has a part 0 and a part 1 with jpg's instead of png's so i guess that's the problem. But where do i put my bootscreen? in part 0 or 1? and do i have to delete one? What is the difference even between the 2? It's kinda odd because part 0 goes from image 1-9 and part 1 10-30ish
-EDIT2-
Using the new bootanimation.zip i've made a little progress.... its custom now... custom black. i get an entirely black screen. made me even panic for a sec there but still booted afterwards
I googled it and some1 had the same problem, but his solution didn't help me. apparently android cant play this animation ( still 1 pic but now i dupped it like 50x XD
I've added the .zip as it looks right now i made it a zip as a store... no compression at all... so that isn't the problem
I really don't know enough to tell you why its not working but it's my understanding that part 0 runs once & then part 1 runs in a loop.

hmmm that would make sense.... as u'll only want to fade in once... Still haven't fixed black screen problem tho.
Find your bootanimation file. on my SGS Continuum it is in the /system/media folder as bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg. if you have these.qmg files, there is currently no easy away around them. they do not use the common bootanimation.zip like most other phones. search the forums for the ".qmg" boot images and there are some not so perfect ways around this without a whole new kernel flash.
Ok i just examined a .tar from romkitchen.... and in it is a bootanimation.zip so if i change that with my own animation and flash the kernel it should work right? or is there an easier way? and if u use the same settings for romkitchen that i have right now i dont even need to flash right?

[Q] White screens/flashes in bootanimation!

Ive prepared a bootanim. It contains 449 frames. Runs at 35 FPS. Should work... The bootanim even gets loaded on boot, and it even runs. But white screens repeat on every loop... Cant just figure out why!
If there is an existing thread TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM DIRECTLY, Please let me know... coz I couldnt find one!
The desc.txt file code is as follows:
Code:
240 400 35

IM on a reply slow internet connection bro... Isn't there any other way?
The folder size limitation is 120 frames per folder (at least on CM7) after that you'll get white screen. If you have all the 400-something frames in one folder there is no doubt you are going to get a white screen.
You'll have to split it up in many folders or, if you wanna loop it properly, reduce the number of frames and the frame rate and apply some motion blur to your frames (400+ frames is just A LOT of frames...)
If that's not the error check if the frames that are white are in the correct color format (RGB 8bit or RGB 16bit)

Muromysli, ur reply seems the most legible one! Thanks a lot bro! This must be the cure for the Itch, coz Ive seen similar references all throughout xda about this prob... But if I want to split it into multiple folders, then how can i loop all the folders? I mean like,
part0
part1
part2
part3
4 folders will be needed for 449 frames...
so can I loop these folders in some way?

Not sure about that because all my boot animations works perfectly on CM7 and there are over 900+ images in one folder.
I will advice you to read this tutorial and make sure all the steps you done are correct.
Edit: Rename your image files to 3 digits i.e change 0001 to 001 and try.

You can't loop them properly if you want the bootanimation to loop until the OS is finished booting. but you can however write in the desc.txt file that it will play part0,part1,part2,part3,part0,part1,part2... BUT if you do that the OS has to wait for the bootaimation to finish playng all folders as many times you've told it to play them before the OS can finish booting. In other words, even though the OS would finish booting and be ready for use it has to play trough all the folders that are left before it can be used.
And I refere you to follow this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1096068
I still recommend that you reduce the number of frames frame and the frame rate and add motion blur. Your boot animation is 13 seconds long (449frames / 35fps = 12.8 seconds) there is no need for 449 frames. you can put the frame rate to aroud 20 or even 15 and it will still be smoot ( if u use motion blur)

Windows image editor side effect. When you are viewing files in the windows picture viewer it will place a hidden file in the folder usually thumbs.db or imagethumb.db or other *.db file. This will cause the boot to flash white as the player tries to play the image sequence. This file must be removed from the folder for your boot to work right – when it is in the ‘stored’ format you can right click then select 7zip in the dropdown go over to open archive and then examine the contents of each folder if you see a *.db file – delete it. That will correct the problem.
hope i helped.

Delete Thumbs.db in your parts. It is a system hidden file, so you'll need to be able to show system hidden files in Windows. After that, it should work.

[Q] Why is my boot animation now working?????

hey
so i am trying to create my first boot animation, and have done everything according to the guide, well i think i have at least, and have tried so many different things i am kinda out of ideas. so please if someone can tell me what i am doing wrong i would really appreciate it a lot.
so this is basically what i have tried: tried running only the "part0" folder with one pic inside, it worked but then as soon as added in the "part1" it didnt. also tried using a boot animation that works and putting just my pics in the folders, didnt work. also changed the "c" to "p" and vice versa and it didnt work. so to be honest i have no more ideas:/
i am doing it for my samsung s5830i.
this is the boot animation i made View attachment bootanimation.zip
would really really appreciate it if somone could help.
Don't know what is exactly you problem but here are somethings which you should remeber while creating bootanimation.
1. First and most important, always choose "store" or "none " compression method while which actually means there should be no compression. If you choose even 1% compression you will get error (blank screen )
2. Always remember to leave last line of "desc.txt" blank.
3. P or C doesn't matter. It only tells about instruction.
4. Only 1 part is sufficient but if you have more than 1, dont forget about to give instructions about it in desc.txt
5. Set permission to rw-r-r- of bootanimation.zip
6. in "desc.txt", each instruction should be on new line.
Try these. I will see your bootanimation.zip file and will tell you.

Yes, You have to leave last line blank.
I don't know which file explorer you use. I use root explorer.
When you paste bootanimation.zip in system>media folder, just press on it for 2-3 seconds, menu will appear on which you will see an option named "permissions". Open it and tick as shown in image attached. Then press ok. Done!

You were correct. Its really pissing me off too!
btw i forgot to mention you one important thing. When you compress all the zip files, choose "store" or "none" compression. It basically means 0% compression. Hope you have done this.
If not, just try with original files as i dont have them. Remember dont use extracted/compressed files, use original size files. Hope you have not deleted them.
If you cant find option of store in your zip archiver, use 7-zip and zip them.
If it still fails, let me know. We will start again from scratch.
Yeah u mentioned about the compression. And yes I have just zipped to store. So it should work. But yes I still have original files. Do u want me to upload the original files to?

IT WORKED BRO! :victory:
I just extracted all your images. Resized all of them to 240x320 (my screen size). Also I replaced c with p in desc.txt (because 'c' only supports for jellybean onwards, I am on gingerbread). Then I compressed them and placed in system > media, and changed permission. And rebooted. And BOOM! It worked.
I saw your image size 321x480. I think you should resize all of them to 320x480. Maybe that is causing problem.
P.S. I used this tool to resize multiple images at once.Online Batch resize

Ok so i have read through this whole thread all over again, and its so irritating cause im sure its not supposed to be this difficult to do this. so i tried changing the desc.txt file where it says 320 480, i changed it to 321 480, also changed the p to a c. tried this and it didnt work. then changed it back to 320 480(still got a p, not a c) and resized all the pictures(320 480), zipped(store not compress) moved it into system/media and then changed permissions. rebooted and still not working.

Boot animation not changing in nexus 5

Hey guys, today i tried to change my boot animation with ROM toolbox but it failed. Then i also tried by copying boot animation.zip in root/system/media but still it didn't change.
What should i do ?
put the bootanimation.zip into (root)/data/local/, save and reboot(with a root file explorer). if its still not working, then wont work with the n5. rom toolbox is an old app, and has old boot animations. its possible they wont work with the n5.
@simms22
Worked by placing zip in data/local
Thanks , from where can i get batman boot animation for nexus 5 .
Tried google it bt no good results

you can make one
if you do find older boot animations, most will be tiny on the n5screen.n because the n5 has a much greater screen resolution than any older device. i havent seen any newer batman boot animations.

Old or not, there's no reason they shouldn't work. If they aren't made for this specific screen resolution, all you need to do is unzip the animation, batch resize all the images in the the folders, edit desc.txt and compress it back to a zip file again. Pretty simple, actually! :good:

Old or not, there's no reason they shouldn't work. If they aren't made for this specific screen resolution, all you need to do is unzip the animation, batch resize all the images in the the folders, edit desc.txt and compress it back to a zip file again. Pretty simple, actually! :good:

That sounds like a lot of work to me

Boot animation not working correctly.

I have made a boot animation, but it is not working correctly. It plays part0 until the system finishes booting, rather than just once. What am I doing wrong? I have CM13 on a gt-p5113.

how many images do you have in your part folders??
you set the framerate in desc.txt to 2. thats very low. standard bootanimations runs with a framerate of 30

I am making an extremely simple one to start with, and there are 2 images per folder. This is my first boot animation.
check the image name
it should be in same order
folder part 0
image_0.jpg
image_1.jpg
part 1
image_2.jpg (exact name and following number from the previous folder)
and so on..
also try using "p 1 1" for first line in desc
since you are using 3 fps, that is seriously low, even if you have less images.
your second line in desc which is c 0 0, that would go on with the loop, if you're using that in android version below lollipop that would also not work properly.
