Well, I was using an app called screen dimmer, and did pressed the button to dim the screen when all of a sudden it froze. It was like this for a while so I restarted it, it is able to go in fastboot, but nothing else. When i start It it hangs on the boot loader screen and can stay like that all day. if I go into recovery the screen goes black and the display is only backlit. I was going to try to to use the adb to factory reset it, but I could not get it to recognize the nexus 5 as a device. I used a bunch of different drivers. I did root my phone, and have the exposed framework but this was done a long time ago and I had no problems since. no idea how to fix this any help?!?!? Sorry if this is the wrong place to put this I'm new to this site.

You need to find a driver that works so it'll recognize the device. Once you do this, you need to flash boot.img to restore the recovery since not working. Then, redo the ROM or restore from backup if you can. Flashing a new recovery boot.img should fix the issue.

Hi, In first place, You are in the right place to get help:good:
2. ADB won't work on fastboot nor in a damaged recovery.
3. fastboot works:victory: Try to flash recovery once again (fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img)
4. if 3 works, wipe system, caches. Flash the Rom you want, don't use that app anymore.

There is a chance to keep your data + storage contents. If you manage to flash and boot into recovery, in 'wipe' menu manually check-mark "cache, system"
don't mark internal "storate and data", nothing will happen to your media and apps data.

May be able to dirty flash but most likely, since you had the screen dimmed too much, you'll have to wipe data in order to override/remove the problem. You can try this way but may just send you back through this whole process if problem reoccurs. I'd just wipe the data to be safe.

No, and if you had done your homework you would know that. If the data is so important, back it up before modding.

The general idea is that your recovery is broken.
So, you need to flash a new recovery by placing a recovery.img file into your fastboot folder in the computer(recommend twrp). Like you did the first time you fladhed a recovery.
Then, turn off the phone, press volume down+ power button and it will boot into bootloader. Make sure it is on fastboot mode. After that, on the computer open cmd on the fastboot folder and and type:
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecoveryfile.img,
press enter.
It should flash a new recovery image if done correctly. Then, poweroff the phone, boot again into bootloader, choose recovery and it will reboot into recovery. Then follow. The steps of my first post.

You have a couple of options depending on how much data you can afford to lose on your phone. The least intrusive is to adb push a Rom on to your phone when you're in twrp Then flash that rom in twrp
The easier, but you'll lose all data on your phone is to flash the flash-all.bat file in fastboot

I have the factory image from google for my nexus 5

Hi all,
Been given a Nexus S i9023 by my brother who has been "tampering" with it and now it seems a bit messed up.
When booting up - it gets stuck on the "Google" screen with a padlock on it... I can get into fastboot and I can flash recovery but when I attempt to load any recovery - I get that same Google screen with the padlock! I've downloaded a stock rom and even flashed system etc via fastboot but that still gets me nowhere past the damn padlock!!
I've tried to "fastboot boot recovery.img" and I still get the Google screen with the padlock but it says "Fastboot status - OK" on the bottom left.
I've searched and searched but everyone just seems to give tips on how to flash recovery. I know how to flash recovery; it just seem to be going into it though! Could the internal memory be screwed?
Thanks for any advice!
Sounds strange for sure. You try from within the OS? Enable USB debugging and adb reboot recovery.
Doubt it will work but its worth a shot

The phone stops at Google with the padlock on boot! Can't even get into the OS. Going to try to unbrick it and Odin but left my ubuntu laptop at my parents and can't be bothered to go get it... couldn't get it to work booting off cd rom. Kept giving me the "SBL Injection Failure Failed to find device" error booting ubuntu on a CD!
You may have a storage issue.
I seen you tried to flash system and boot recovery with fastboot ( which should have booted) but did you try to flash them all and wipe. The command is fastboot -w update file name.
I think Odin is a windows only tool anyways by the way.

No idea why I said Odin - I meant the unbrickable recovery thing.
I tried Odin with a Jig last night; got it into download mode and flashed with odin. Got the same result.
fastboot -w also gives the same issue...
If I have a storage issue - is there any way I can tell?
Basically you can tell by the issues you're having. Doing all the proper stuff to flash images etc and still having a booting/working device.
As far as a actual diagnostic tool I don't know of one. But it sure sounds like a hw issue to me.
I have the following problem: since a few weeks I'm unable to enter recovery.
This is what I do:
- shut down my phone
- press the power button while holding the volume up
- than I get a screen where I can choose from 4 options using the volume controls and selecting an option with the power button
- I select 'Recovery' and press the power button
- I get the usual black screen with Google logo and padlock
- but instead of getting into my recovery, I get a black screen with a Droid lying down, the 'chest' opened and some kind of small warning triangle above it..somebody who knows what I have to do??
Thanks in advance

Flash custom recovery.img part
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/wiki/fastboot#Flash_Custom_Recovery.img
You need ADB (and ADB drivers installed, strongly recommend PDANet Android Drivers) and fastboot executable.
Custom recovery I suggest you use Clockworkmod Recovery.

When u boot on the Google screen on the bottom centre does it have a padlock? If so then it is unlocked.
You are entering recovery. Stock recovery
If you want a custom one either flash with fastboot or if you're rooted with a app. Goo manager. Rom manager etc.
Keep it mind that if you're on a stock ROM the custom recovery gets overwritten back to stock when the phone boots up the os

In installed the drivers and I installed the fastboot executable, but what do I have to do next? If I run the fastboot.exe, it just quickly shows a CMD-window and then disappears.
Edit:
I just discovered that, when I'm at the bootloader (I think it's called that way, the screen where you can select recovery), and I choose to reboot, I get the same 'error' as when I try to enter recovery.
Edit:
Alright, I was able to flash a new recovery, using cmd, but now when I try to enter my recovery, the phone gets stuck at a black screen with Google logo and padlock...
I have same problem as wolverine_2k who made the post. My nexus, can't start, I tried reboot and recovery but didn't work. After reboot or recovery I see Google logo, than Nexus screen and that is it. It didn't move to home screen and it stay with lighting screen all the time till I remove the battery. I can't power off it and don't know what to do. I can't transfer data with my PC (it don't recognize the device - only notice that "unknown device" is connected). Please any ideas?
P.S.: My English is not good, if someone answer do it simple please
Thanks!

To clarify... Flash boot from recovery, while that is running adb reboot bootloader? If that is the case I have a different set of problems to "boot", I can't get my pc to recognize the phone while in recovery. Everything else is recognized, even reinstalled drivers to be certain, pc doesn't even try to install a driver for recovery. Tried both TWRP & CWM.

Okay, this will probably help you...while your device is in Sticky Bit Factory Fastboot, open up a command prompt and connect to your device (given you know how to do so in your folder containing your fastboot app and drivers). Then type "fastboot oem fb_mode_clear" This command will allow your device to boot into system normally. Problem is (I think) when a failed flash occurs sometimes it sets your device in that mode and the above command clears it. Another way to manually place a device in the same state you described is to enter this command using fastboot: fastboot oem fb_mode_set. I believe that is how RSD Lite automatically reboots your device into factory fastboot mode after flashing partitions (.mbn) on your system so that it may resume flashing the boot, recovery, and system images, etc. Let me know if it helps.....

I'm trying to load the CM ROM to my HTC One S device. I was able to unlock and root the device. Next, I flashed the boot.img (fastboot flash boot.img) from the ROM zip file to the device and restarted it (cm-10.1-20130304-EXPERIMENTAL-ville-M2). Now my device just cycles through the HTC splash screen with the red letters "this build is for development purposes only..." -> Android Splash Screen. Phone does not properly boot up. I think I missed a step in the flashing process. Any ideas on how to proceed?
fastboot flash boot boot.img
just in case you typed it the way you wrote in your post.
what recovery are you using? what version?
maybe try twrp 2.3.3
get into bootloader and flash again, go to recovery do a full wipe and install the cm zip again.

Sorry, the command I used was "fastboot flash boot boot.img" The CM boot.img definitely got written to the device. I missed the step of copying the ROM to a folder on my device. I wasn't clear on this step since I'm not sure how to view folders on the device. Is there a way to load the ROM from my PC instead of copying the files to the device first?
I'm using TWRP 2.6.0.0. I'm also not clear on the back up portion since there is no SD card on this device. Is it possible to perform a backup? I thought I did one during the initial step, but now that I'm trying to restore, I don't see a backup available.
yes, the "sd card" is there as a partition or whatever. But it works the same way. Backups do work.
So in twrp mount the sd card (usb storage, whatever twrp calls it), then you can transfer the rom to your phone from your computer. Then just wipe your caches and install zip.
You can get into recovery from your bootloader, hold volume down and press power (don't hold)

So you are trying to get into recovery. When you go into the bootloader, you choose recovery and it doesn't work.
you could go back to bootloader, fastboot usb.
from there open a command terminal on your computer. From your fastboot folder press shift and right mouse click <open command terminal here>
type
fastboot erase cache
then you can press power button to select hboot, then volume down to recovery.
You could try to flash a different recovery if that doesnt work. Make sure you are using the correct recovery for your device. S4 version or the S3 international type devices.

Then unlock the bootloader by:

Hey guys this is my first thread, I hope it's in the right section
Here's my problem:
Yesterday my Moto G 2013 with CM12.1 just froze (I could turn the screen on and off but that was it)
I tried opening the reboot menu, which worked, but it got stuck on "rebooting", so I just holded the power key until it turned off.
After that I got to the boot logo, but nothing happened from there, not even the boot animation showing up.
Next I tried to boot into TWRP, but it only got to the TWRP boot logo and nothing happened after that, so I flashed CWM, which I could access, but when trying to flash something it just doesn't progress. When I press "reboot to bootloader" on CWM it just freezes there aswell.
In another thread I read that flashing the gpt.bin should fix everything but it didn't help.
I don't really want to perform a factory reset, because of the data loss, but I think this would be my only option.
My question is:
How can I fix my phone (preferably without a factory reset), for example by getting TWRP to work again, because I have a Backup of my system and a zip of CM12.1 on it?
Btw another thing to mention is that when being in Recovery/System USB doesn't really work, but if my phone is turned off or in bootloader it works just fine.
Try "fastboot boot twrp.img" (or whatever the exact name of your TWRP image is). If it gets at least to the curtain screen, run "adb pull /tmp/recovery.log".

When I try "fastboot boot twrp.img" it reboots and get's stuck at the boot logo of android (Motorola logo) and I can hear the "Device disconnected" sound of windows.
But I flashed TWRP into recovery and it get's to the curtain screen. But it doesn't recognize my phone which might have to do with that as soon as it boots into a system USB just won't work
The following command will get TWRP working: fastboot erase userdata

But this will delete everything like my pictures folder, right? Isn't there a way to backup these files ?
@Ju43
adb pull /sdcard/ c:/motog_backup/

But adb only works in recovery mode in android, which I can't access right now without deleting everything, right ? And if I delete userdata, will my TWRP backup be deleted, too ? (It's just a backup of my system)
(sorry for asking so many questions, but I really don't wan't to lose all my photos and stuff)

Yes, you do need at least access to recovery mode for adb to work. Try testing TWRP even if it is only partially loading. Also try CWM.
Everything will get erased on internal storage, photos, TWRP backup etc. Unfortunately, you may be left with no alternative.

Okay, thanks for your answer, but as I mentioned before, as soon as I boot into something like recovery or android, USB doesn't really work anymore (though it seemed to work again in android). Will erasing user data fix this (as it seems to be a software problem) or even better fixing it before erasing userdata, so I can backup my files? And if I erase user data and TWRP/CWM/whatever works, but USB won't then I can't really put a system on it, can I ?

Recovery mode ADB can take some effort to make work depending on the version of Windows. Since you obviously want to backup your files, you can try booting into Linux (a livecd will work) and installing adb. Linux adb works without the need for drivers so it may give you access.
If using Ubuntu, the command to install adb/fastboot is:
sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot

I see what you mean but I got adb to work most times when android was still working (just not in recovery) but I also had problems with charging when the phone was turned on, so I assume it's a problem with android, but I'll search for a Ubuntu Live CD that should be layng around somewhere here (lol) and I'll try it
@lost101
Ok, I installed adb and fastboot, but now it doesn't even find my phone in bootloader...

Thanks, I didn't think abut that :highfive: fastboot works now, but adb doesn't (again when using fastboot boot TWRP.img the terminal shows that it worked but the phone just reboots and is stuck on the Motorola logo and if I flash TWRP it doesn't work either). Maybe I should mention, that I have that screen flickering and like scanline thingy going on when I boot into recovery.

Maybe you can get the phone booting into Android by fastboot flashing the system.sparsechunks from the Factory Firmware Image for your phone.
