Can an unlocked Pantech Discover (AT&T brand) use 4G lte data on another service? I know it has the correct network ability (LTE 700 MHz Class 17 / 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100) to work at 4G lte speeds on AT&T network, but I want to know if it will work while unlocked on T Mobile (that has the same requirements). The network abilities are confirmed compatible, and is not the question, will it reach the same speed even though it is not made for the carrier (T mobile in this case). I would love to find out before I spend the money to buy it brand new and unlocked, only to see if it will work or not. And if not, I have wasted the money. I have heard that this will not work, or might now that things have changed (No real help, and makes my more cautious).
Reading everything on the internet I can find. So far I've found the conflicting answers that:
1) As long as it has the network ability, then yes.
2) No unlocked phone will reach above EDGE speeds on another carrier. (May by very outdated, but can't confirm)
3) That might not be correct, unlocked phones will not, normally, work correctly on other networks.
4) It works 100%
5) It can only reach 3G
After several calls I've found out:
1) T mobile says:
a) Should work.
b) No idea.
c) Since it has the network ability to use 4G lte with our network, it should, but I don't know.
2) Pantech
a) Just try it.
b) I think so, but I don't know.
3) AT&T (the phone is made for and sold by them)
a) Unlocking will not limit the phone.

T-Mobile has different LTE speeds depending on the area you live. In southern California T-Mobile's LTE is a little faster than ATT. Since both are GSM you will definitely have 3G, if on that phone HSPA+, but not sure on LTE. I was thinking that ATT and TMobile had LTE on different frequencies as they do not use the same towers etc.

Can someone explain why it I've heard that if you take an unlocked AT&T phone like the Fuze to T-Mobile or another provider, that you won't get full 3G data speeds like you do on AT&T? Isn't an unlocked phone "fully" unlocked? What would prevent data from operating at it's fullest?

in usa it depend on what 3g band the provider use vs. what 3g band the phone have
elsewhere it would work 100% as only usa use alternative 3g bands
I have an AT&T rooted Motorola Atrix 4G that I purchased and SIM unlocked (still running Android 2.2). I am using it currently on GCI's (of Alaska) GSM network which is currently 2G (Edge) in my area. However, GCI (yeah, this next part is weird) actually has a 3G network, but it is CDMA. I looked and it looks like I can get a 3G data only package from them for $19 a month (separate from the phone package I already have). I called and they said their systems are separate so I can't "have it all" on one number. The question is, would I be somehow able to use both on the phone? There is an option in the settings to use both types of networks, but I am not sure how I would input the CDMA settings to get it to work (if it would).
Reasons why I would want to do this:
GCI's CDMA coverage is not great outside of town (and some places in town). However, their GSM 2G coverage is the largest in the state (works even in crazy small remote villages). So basically I want to maintain good phone coverage but have the faster data when it's available.

How did you get your atrix to connect to GCI? I can't get it to connect. Mine has 2.3 and the phone wont connect to GCI! Will rooting it help?
Sorry for what is probably a stupid question.
I am thinking of buying an International version of the 7.0 plus (P6200) but I'm having a hard time figuring out which US Carrier, if any, (AT&T, T-Moble or Verizon) is fully compatible with the table's supported frequencies.
Any help in pointing me to the carrier, that will allow the tablet to get 3g data and allow the tablet to make phone calls, would be greatly appreciated.
Also, if you are using a P6200 in the US, I would be interested in what carrier you use, your opinions of the carrier and your opinion of the tablet in general.

I'm not familar witht eh international model but I can tell you that it won't work with Sprint or Verizon as they are CDMA and not GSM. So that leaves T-Mobile and AT&T and it would depend upon what frequency the GTab7+ recieves, is it tri-band (850, 1800, 1900) or just a single band? AT&T uses 850/1900 MHz and T-Moblile 1900 MHz for 3G service. I would assume that it would be tri-band as are so called "world phones".
TMo also requires UMTS1700.
So almost surely it will NOT get 3G service on TMo. That's why there is a special Tmo variant.

Here are the listed frequencies for the tablet
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100
it appears that it supports all the frequencies for AT&T and T-Mobile. I guess my confusion is I can't tell if the tablet will support 3G or just 2G (wouldn't be worth it if all I could get is 2G).

Sorry I got a little confused between tabs and phones. Verizon uses EV-DO (CDMA based) for 3G and AT&T is HSDPA (GSM based) at 1900 MHz. T-Mobile uses 1700 and 2100 MHz for 3G.
warning, if you plan on using as phone and tab, at&t may want to make sure you are on tab data plan as well an it could be pricey for both.
with that being said Im using this on att with voice and unlimited grandfathered smartphone data. havent heard a word from them. I pray it stays this way. I will fight them for it.
conclusion: best mobile device in the world right now IMHO, until 7.7 comes out.

I saw someone said they can do that on the 7.7 thread but I wanted to make sure the AT&T iPhone SIM isn't restricted to iPhones somehow.

I have GT-P620900 from the Philippines and I am my tablet in the US now. I tested using at&t sim card and it works when I tried making a call using sim card (gsm).

With the posted frequencies:
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100
it will work perfectly for 3G (HSDPA/HSPA+) speeds only on AT&T. You should get 2-4 Mbps downlink, or maybe even more with a good signal on AT&T.
Unfortunately for T-Mobile (whom I also prefer over AT&T), it will only work on their 2G network, at EDGE speeds, which would be about 200 Kbps if you are lucky. Actually, EDGE speeds are good enough for twitter, facebook, and a bit of surfing, but would be frustratingly slow for YouTube or downloading apps.
The Tab 7plus will NOT work on Sprint or Verizon as their CDMA, LTE, and WiMax networks are different technology from GSM and HSDPA and thus not compatible.
Internationally, the 7plus should work on almost any 2G or 3G network, with maybe a few country exceptions here and there.
BTW if you decide to activate your 7plus on AT&T, I can share a bit of experience. I received a Tab 7.7 3G this week, with a similar frequency list to the 7plus. (Unfortunately, it also lacks the "AWS" 1700/2100 band for T-Mobile). I went to an AT&T store today to activate the 7.7 on a month-to-month data plan, of US$25 for 2GB with US$10 per each 1GB of overage. They were not able to assign the data plan in their system to me, because the 7.7 3G is not an AT&T device. The same will be true for your 7plus. What they did to get it to work was to take the IMEI number from one of the other tablets they had on display in the store - making sure it was an HSDPA tablet, and not an LTE one - and used that to activate my account. It took them a while to figure this out, but when they did, it worked. Once the account was activated, and the SIM card was in my 7.7, it found AT&T service and I immediately got a welcome text message. However, data did not yet work - for that I had to do one more thing, which the staff did not know about (but luckily I did).
Go into Settings->Wireless and Networks->Mobile Network Settings
In there is an "Access Point Names" item.
Click on this, and you should see some entries. If it's a new AT&T SIM, it likely says "Cingular 410" or "wap.cingular" or something. This would be correct for a phone, but does not work with tablet data plans, so we need to add the correct one.
Bring up the menu, and there should be a "New APN" option. Select this. In the form which comes up, in the "Name" field, enter "broadband" (one word, no caps, without the quotes). In the "APN" field, do the same - "broadband" one word, no caps, no quotes.
Once you've done this, hit the menu again, and there should be a "Save" option. Choose this, and it will take you back to the list of APNs. Now in the list there should be an APN item called "broadband" which you just created. Press the radio button to the far right of the broadband item. It should turn green.
Give the tablet a few seconds, or a minute, and data should start working!

Ok, so I've searched all over and haven't had much luck. I have no experience with cdma phones, as t mobile is all I've ever had.
I was given a new US Cellular HTC Hero s. I opened it up and saw the sim slot and though, sweet I can replace my sensation with it (I smashed the screen pretty bad). Well, that was a no go, as the phone is cdma. Looking online though, I see it can run in gsm (options global mode, cdma mode, gsm / umts mode. I unlocked the bootloader using the htc site (not sure it matters) and popped in my sim card again, and tried both global and gsm mode, though neither got signal or would dial out. (under networks, it had the tmo apn info.)
So, is the GSM mode offered on this phone only for non US bands? Would a custom rom (now or down the road) allow it to work on tmo? I read something about the HTC Merge and someone being able to switch out the modem in the rom that allowed it to work in the US, but that is well beyond me. I can follow instructions, work ADB and flash roms.. but thats about it.
Is it possible, or will it soon be, to have this phone work on GSM or am I just stuck trying to sell it as a us cellular phone (or perhaps another cdma carrier.. like I said, I don't know anything about cdma)
As a Canadian I'm not sure about who owns US cellular or if they are their own company but I'm guessing they work like Verizon world phones. They have sim card slots but will work only outside of the US. If those verizon phones are used within the States, they will only pick up Verizon's frequency, as opposed to T-Mobile or AT&T where you can unlock them and use them with any GSM carrier within the States. But yeah, you can unlock it and it will work with any GSM carrier outside the States but within the States I think it will only work under US Cellular CDMA network...please correct me if I'm wrong.
That's right, u.s. cdma "world phones" have gsm radios but are locked down from connecting to gsm networks in the u.s. This is not just the normal sim lock found on gsm phones but they are hard coded to ignore u.s. gsm networks.
Some have been unlocked to work on any network through various methods including flashing a modem from a non-us varient of the same phone and other hacks. I can't comment specifically on this phone however.

Well, that points me in the right direction, and confirms what I read about swapping modems (on the other phone mentioned).
So basically it's software telling it not use a certain frequency, and not that the phone itself is incapable of picking it up (had my doubts about that)
Pretty shady the way phone companies are allowed to operate (don't get me started on my unlimited internet in my contract [pre data caps in tmo]. "Hey! check it out, this phone uses data 5 times faster than your old one, oh, and you get half as much too) sorry, end of rant.

On a side note, can cdma phones be flashed to another cdma carrier like verizon or sprint, or is it the same deal, coded to only use a certain frequency range?

for Q1:yes you well be able to use any network... install any mod now most of them are already rooted and unlocked
for Q2:yes you can... all you need to ddo is to download a program called hiapn.. wipe the existing apn settings.. then auto detect and you are good to go 3g and hspa
Q3: yes it works thanks to the magic of hiapn software... but not many countrys use LTE .. usa canada japan and maybe few others
Verizon SGS3 on any GSM Carrier
Hi experts,
I have a small doubt here.
If the Verizon SGS3 can be used with any GSM Carrier around the world, then that means, the Verizon SGS3 can be used with AT&T or T-Mobile as well along with Verizon Network.
But the T-Mobile or AT&T Versions cannot be used on the Verizon's Network. Is that true?
I'm have got a traveling assignment coming up to Europe this Summer and I need to know what is the best possible solution out there before I leave.

Verizon's GS3 uses CDMA technology for the phone calling and data, as far as I know the SIM in the verizon version is only used for LTE.
From what I have read in forum posts, (this one in particular http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2013647) if you pop in a SIM card, calling and texting should work. If you want data to work then you need to change some APNs around. Stock touchwiz does not allow this so you would need an app to do that. AOSP ROMs should have a way for you to edit APNs.
On the topic of getting 4G on any other network besides Verizon, that is fairly unlikely as they all use different technologies/ bands. Verizon has LTE, T-Mobile has HSPA+, not entirely sure what AT&T has but I think its also LTE.
This phone will take any SIM card cut to micro-size.

Each LTE carrier uses different radio frequencies, and global countries also use LTE frequencies different than the US ones. 4G is a very varied standard at the moment.
If you want fast internet on a non VZW carrier, it better have HSPA+, otherwise you are on 3G at best.
Right now, the only truely global phone is the iPhone5 on VZW, which supports 5 different LTE frequencies. Sad but true.
The US based SG3's dont even have the FM radio that the international versions have

Yeah, my girlfriend has a verizon s3 and with straight talk she is only on edge it never changes. It makes the phone nearly useless. Ive tried to talk her into letting me flash and unlock it but she isnt real interested in it. I dont even know forsure if unlocking the bootloader downgrading to 4.1.1 and using the att sim unlock method would work but I would assume that flashing it would allow you to at least get 3-4g. not?
