Change Rom - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm thinking that is the time to change rom for my nexus 5. But what is the best rom? i'm undecided between purity , Cataclysm and Omni. Thanks for all your suggestions

Hi,
The best is to try by yourself to make your own opinion because you'll have 20 different advices... It depends of your needs, read the OP of each rom thread to see the different fetures...
And: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477889.

JunkROM platinum is best. Fastest benchmarks and longest battery.

The problem is that i can't make a decision i need a customizable rom, where i can use franco kernel. I loved the CM on a nexus s but now i read that isn't very good for nexus 5

if you cant make a decision, you have no business flashing roms. check out the rom threads, try a few, find the one that's best for YOU. there is no best rom, theres only the rom thats best for you.

Ok for the Nexus s i tried every rom.. so it will the same for this

If you prefer close to stock, try Cataclysm w/ the added features. Run it now with no issues, very smooth on ART. Good luck finding one with features that you prefer.

do you have advantage to use ART and Franco on that rom?

Stock w/ the added features gave me what I needed from my phone, good customization with stable ROM. ART gives me a smoother feel to it (still testing overall speed, others say good while others say placebo). Personally, ART seems to be better for my usage. Franco kernel r32 gives me amazing battery life and his next release (r33 still in beta) has many people claiming way better battery life than current r32 (yet r32 still good choice and smoother than other kernels I've tested). Testing these features will help you decide what is best for your needs.

Best rom threads are not allowed. Reason being is there is no "Best" Rom. It is all up to you.
Try them out yourself and decide.

[Q] stock rom vs custom rom

good morning,
i'm quite new on this phone even if It works fine for me with a stock rom 4.0.4 I would you like to understand if there is a good advantage to pass on a custom rom.
Please share with me your experience and answer with my few questions:
what kind of custom rom and kermel you have on?
which is the difference there is in term of battery life; performance; stability.
Thanks for your help
Welcome to the Nexus ... you're going to love this phone. With that said, you need to jump in and do some reading. There is no shortage of opinion on which rom, kernel, or even GB vs ICS ... is best. It very much depends on your likes, dislikes, etc. I assume that you have a gsm device, so make sure to flash the appropriate roms, kernels, etc. Lastly, there is lots of help available, but it's always best if you dig in and bring yourself up to speed with what's already been posted in these great forums. Good luck!

thanks mate,
after few weeks i tested it, i find this phone a very good one and I don't feel the need to jump in a custom rom. I rooted it, installed a busybox and the clockwork and I added some apps to eliminate some gaps like the missing notification when the screen is off (I installed the noled apk for it) or like a switch off or switch on of the screen using the power button (I used an apps called accendi scermo and I switch on and off the screen using the phone sensor). The only thing that miss on this phone is an fm radio offline. I'm still searching a solution.
Stock rom: more stable, less features
Custom rom: less stable, more features
Well if you want to be normal. Than good for you.
Now a custom rom and kernel can give you unlimited privilages to things you can never imagine possible. Undervolting your device to give you brain blowing battery life or over clocking to give you awesome graphics.
A custom rom like CM9 or AOKP (there are way more than two but im just listing the popular ones) is of course better than stock since... well if it wasnt why would they make it. A kernel links your hardware to your software, meaning you can do some tweaking in the middle. If you find the right kernel and rom mix you can have a wopping 15 days standby on your battery (eg CM9 and Matr1x Kernel).
Now thats just the basics. if you are interested and want more information. Just do a bit of research and reading in this forum and ask questions in those forums. Hope this helps.
ics 4.0.4 stock+ simple or thalamus kernel

Regarding Xposed and gravity box...

I just purchased a new Nexus 5 coming from a Note 3 (jellybeans ROM)
On that rom I had some xposed modules setup.
Is it accurate that Gravity Box is designed for AOSP based roms and I should stick to that that module? Or can I use any of them without an issue?
Thanks!

Thanks. With the amount of customization given now with the modules, I'm debating on either rooting and unlocking, flashing Francos kernel and just using the modules... Or, flashing a rom like Slim kat.
Any recommendations? There are so many aosp roms to choose from with a Nexus device. It was so easy on a locked down VZW note 3. Only 2 or 3 roms and no kernels. [emoji1]

You should root then install xposed along with the GB module with stock Google rom. Use it for a few days see what you think. I'd put $ on you liking that combination "as is".
As for roms I'd suggest you do research. If this turns into a rom suggestion thread then it will be locked asap.
Of course this is all of my own opinion GL!

Ha! Yea, I don't want to start another "best rom" thread. I don't think xda could handle another one of those.
I'm definitely going to root and unlock and try stock for a week or so with some module settings.
My biggest concern is battery life.
Slimkat is a beast !

Battery life (for me) equals the moto X and surpasses the GS4. It's so individual ya know! I get 4.5 to 5 hours screen on time in about a 18-22 hour period per charge on wifi and 3.5 to 4 hours screen on time in about a 14-18 hour period on 4g/3g/LTE. Hope that helps

+1 for stock + GB...you'll find many others who agree. I've tried a few of the top roms but I've yet to find one with as many customizations as GB. I find I get better battery life with Franco kernel too, specifically r20 (ymmv).

I'm definitely flashing Francos Kernel but I'm still deciding on which one. I'm seeing a few bug complaints on R35 and R37...so that's still up for debate.

I flashed r32 around the time it was released and my battery life was noticeably worse than on r20, so I flashed back and have been happy ever since so haven't had the urge to update again. It does seem to vary per device though, so might be worth testing each for a few days.

[Q] Improving rom

I know the n5 on cm11 is very fast, but I just wanted to know is there any little tweaks to make the rom even better / faster?

Tring another custom rom can improve the user experience for instance
Some ROMs have a mod to improve the scrolling cache. You can also add some tweaks / features through Xposed, flash a custom kernel and so on... A lot of things to try actually ^^
Hmm better anything to improve performance or smoothness?
a different rom and kernel than cm. i wouldnt ever call cm fast or on top in performance. cm is more bloated then anything else. but if all youre looking for is mods, then cm is good.
Reduce animations, f2fs.

Not true. Google's ROM is optimized for certain uses, mainly just general use. Different custom ROMs are developed for different types of uses.
One reason there are no best ROM threads allowed. Different users prefer different ROMs because they use their phones in different ways. It is also part of the fun of experimenting. You can see how different ROMs react to your personal usage and most people usually settle with the one that fits them best, except flashaholics. Had my phone less than a month, went through about five ROMs, 4 custom and stock. Finally settled on slimkat as I like the features.
This also holds true for kernels.
If you want a rom that's basically stock with a few improvements in key areas with great performance and batt life, I suggest going Purity Rom + Code Blue. The kernel is optional as it also works well with Franco

i like cataclysm for me, i wanted to keep close to stock but with the settings i cant live without daily.
no battery percentage or quick unlock with pin code is silly, maybe with android t we will see the settings that custom roms provide

Try both roms out yourself and decide which one suits your needs best. It really isn't good practice to ask which rom is better... Just saying.
For me chroma is the best and ive tried all other roms. Best as in no bugs and smooth as butter. Battery has always been dodgy for me on any rom.

What is the best Marshmallow ROM for the OPO right now?

Currently i'm using @sulthanxda's 6.01 ROM,
Its a great ROM with good features, the best Camera and stuff, But by the end of the day Battery is all what matters. I'm not having enough juice to enjoy the features it gives. So please help me find a better ROM with good battery.

I agree with you, that the Sultana ROM 6 is great. On the other hand, I am getting spectacular battery. Stock Sultana it was pretty good, meaning I'd lose4 -5% over night with the phone 'off', but using DS Battery saver, power use goes flat lie overnight... just flat line.
The rest of the time is 'normal', depending on what I'm doing... and still very good, as the battery will last several days of moderate use, several hours of gaming, and general 'stuff'.

How are the ROMs named here better than the CM nightlys? I'm using them since I got the phone more than a year ago.
Just curious
You can't say, if a ROM is better or worse than another ROM. Every ROM has his own taste.
Well then let's say what are your reasons for using them instead of the more "standard" CM?
I just need my phone to be stable and have a good battery life.

I can't see the point in this discussion and also not how it relates to my original question.
(The qustion beeing what ones reasons are to use a particular ROM) There is no point in posting something like "I'm using ROM xy" without naming any reasons.
