Alright... i keep reading about this KIES deal... since its windows native, i cant install that.
So i need some help...
Im wanting to know how to load a flashing system... and which one...
then wanting to load Infused v1.
Im doing this all from Ubuntu 10.10
__________
Im already rooted, along with the current (stable) BusyBox loaded... so i got that far.
i just wanna know what i gotta do, cause everything seems to rely on this KIES deal, and i dont have that.
I guess im asking for a walk-through... if anyone is willing to help?

Kies is not required for what you want to do, but without knowing
if your Ubuntu OS can reconize your phone as an external USB
flash drive device and or if you have a microUSB card reader and a
microUSB memory card in your phone its difficult to tell you the
exact step by step way to flash roms to your phone.
I can help, but I do need to know these things first.

If you have all that just download the rom zip, place on SD, reboot into recovery, install zip from SD, choose the zip you desire and then select yes and wait .

first dont ask questions in dev
next kies does nothing but install drivers for the infuse. you.have ubuntu. you.dont need drivers.
what you need is cwm to flash roms and heimdall to return to stock.
google heimdall download. get the frontend package and the backend package and install. you may need to set permissions.as executable.
for.cwm the easiest way is to use heimdall to push a kernel to the.phone. download the comunity kernel. extract the .zip and place the zimage in the kernel slot in heimdall
the phone needs to be in download mode look it up.
alternatively yu can use sgs kernel flasher. get it in android market. that app is self explainatory.
there is another way we used before we had these cool custom kernels but i wont get into that.

op pm me if you have trouble. i run mint 10kde. its basdically identical to ubuntu kde edition. i havent run gnome in a while but i think i can still help.
I've used heimdall on my install of ubuntu and it works fairly well. 1.3.0 should be compatible with 10.10

hmm,. i just updated to heimdall 1.3.0 im not sure i like it.
i prefer 1.1.0. it was very strait forward.
edit: after further use i definately prefer v1.1.0, 1.3 isnt as friendly for flashing kernels. it wants a firwamre.xml file in the .tar or something, i need to read up on the new heimdal, the old one let you flash the different partitions individually. and the files were not .tar achives, you just extracted the images from the odin packages.
im sure the new version has its purpose but for simplicity id say get 1.1.1. the 1.1.1 frontend package seems to work over the 1.2 comandline package.
v1.3 seems to be for compatability with future devices(or current ones) that have a different partition table, the firmware.xml file can specify what device the files get flashed to. this is more advanced and not for everyone.
Dani, just go to the "Flash" tab. The old style of doing things is still there.

thanks linux, but i couldnt see how to insert the files. it lets me search for a pit but nothing else.
does the phone need to be connected first?
does it now require a pit before the other files?(i cant get the unbrick ackage to download at this time to test that)
should it be in a .tar file or still extracted like it was before?

Like i said... i have NOTHING as far as recovery, flash software, ect... Im rooted and thats it.
When i plug my phone in, and enable USB, it sees my internal & external memory separately, so im good to go.
So if you could help me though this, that would be spectacular.
Hell... i might even be cool and donate you a few bucks on PayPal
What you might want to look into are the "Odin" flashable ROM packages - these will at least get you root and CWM recovery.
The Ubuntu equivalen of Odin is Heimdall, as mentioned previously. There are a few tricks to flashing a complete Odin firmware package with heimdall, next time I'm at my Ubuntu box I'll go into more detail.
To use Odin/Heimdall, once you've got them set up and have something to flash - turn off your phone, and then hold VolUp and VolDn at the same time while plugging in the USB cable to the phone. A yellow screen with an Android doing construction work will appear.
Edit: And Heimdall 1.3.0 is just as easy to flash kernels with as 1.1.0... 'heimdall flash --kernel zImage' (I don't use the GUI frontend ever)

no donation needed.
Ubuntu doesn't need any special packages or drivers on these phones at all.
actually a heimdall install on ubuntu iis a lot easier than an Odin install in windows, there are never driver issues. infact Ubuntu is eaiser to install than windows so all these Mac users doing the vm thing with windows and Odin are making life hard for themselves.
you can get cwm recovery by flashing a voodoo kernel. this can be done in heimdall (1.1.1 is self explanitory, 1.3.0 might need some explaining but I figured it out so feel free to ask if you need to.) the kernel can also be flashed in a market app called sgs kernel flasher.

but us linux newbs like the gui, it reminds us of windows.
but yeah, you're right that is easy.
the new gui requires a pit to flash individual partitions. I found it odd. but its not too difficult.

First download this cwm recovery kernel here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?srhipjqvy7mpdde
Then rename the downloaded zip file to "update.zip"
and copy it to root of your INTERNAL SD card.
Now boot to the blue text recovery screen of your phone
pressing the up/down and power keys at the same time
then after 10-15 seconds letting go.
If you have trouble getting into the stock blue recovery
menu you can go to the market and download a free
app called "reboot recovery" that way you can go to
the recovery menu with one click.
After you are in the blue recovery menu select "reinstall packages"
You may have to do this twice the first time, then you will see the
clockworkmod recovery menu and you will be ready to flash a
custom rom.
I do now know which custom rom you want to download, so go
ahead and download a custom rom of your choice (must be a zipfile)
and then copy the custom rom zipfile to the root of your internal
sdcard.
After that reboot the phone into recovery using the "reboot recovery"
app or by pressing vol up/down and power keys after the phone is off.
Then you get to the cwm recovery menu and select
"install zip from sd card" then you will see the files in sdcard.
Select the custom rom zipfile from the the menu by going up/down
on list using vol up and vol down buttons. When you highlight the
file you want press the power button and let it start flashing
the custom rom.
On first bootup on custom rom it usually takes twice as long
to complete the boot process.
If you have any questions, let me know.
Good luck, and yes a donation is always welcome

:: UPDATE ::
STEP 9) Press OK and hold your breath. When 3e recovery comes up, just select reinstall packages.
yeah... i never got that... is that an issue?
2nd thing, was kinda hoping it would be a bit louder... since it has voodoo sound. I DLed the FREE manager, but it doesn't seem any different...
3rd thing, how do i change the lock screen back to the default? (just the large pane, instead of the sliders)
That aside... now that ive had it up and running for a few hours and able to play online and play games to really test it. I really like it. nice and smooth, quick as hell too!
@MisterJunky - It appears my PayPal was attacked, so once i get it sorted and un-frozen, ill send ya a few bucks for helping me.
help on my previous.... anyone?

voodoo sound is mainly for recording and headphones( headphones more so than recording) . it had no effect on the external speaker.

-At boot ur device is rooted and check if super user is installed.
CWM..here
-For cwm connect ur device and run set up(note that this doesnt install a permanent cwm(5.8.4...) but rather triggers it by sending the necessary files over to ur phone which are deleted at reboot. So this is done every time to enter cwm mode)(Cwm needs SD card >3gb to work or else u'll get mount err.)
-The new cwm can be optained in fast boot mode. After triggering the first cwm above download this then put ur device in fast boot mode( by holding volup+down+pwr buttons)and selecting fast boot.Connect to pc and install drivers manually by choosing device sky adb drivers in device manager in the android phone section.Run cwm fast boot bat follow instructions and u get cwm.

80-character SMS limit and how to fix it
Hope this helps anyone who is running a stock ROM on this phone and is frustrated with the 80-character SMS limit.
You may have tried an app such as ICS Messaging (available from the Play Store), but found that it won't send any SMS, though it might show received SMS.
This phone's stock SMS app (mms.apk) sends each character in double-byte to accommodate Korean characters, so the 160-character SMS limit is halved.
I found that if you save your own phone number to the "My Number" area on your SIM card (which is not done by default on many newer SIM cards), this somehow allows third-party apps to work, and allows the sending of SMS up to 160 chars - and more, if your operator supports it.
1. First, find an ancient phone, one that can write to the "My Number" area. Get a really old "dumbphone" such as an old Series 40 Nokia. BlackBerries work very well (I used a Curve). Or you could try an iPhone. (I'm sensing a joke here...)
2. Put your SIM card in and power up the phone.
3. Now, you need to write your own number to the SIM card.
On the Curve I went to Options > Advanced Options > SIM Card.
On the iPhone, it should be in Settings > Phone > My Number.
In the My Number area, enter your full phone number, including the country and area codes.
4. Exit and power off the phone. Put your SIM card back into the Vega Racer 2.
5. Go to the stock SMS app and try sending an SMS, preferably to a friend who is on a different network operator.
If it works, proceed to the next step.
6a: If you have root: Use Root Explorer to browse to /system/app and rename Mms.apk to something else, say, Mms.apkOriginalBackup.
Then install ICS Messaging from the Google Play Store.
Check that it works and that you can now send SMS longer than 80 characters. (N.B.: As I mentioned above, make sure your operator hasn't imposed any limits on SMS length.)
6b: If you don't have root (I didn't test this): You can't get rid of the stock messaging app, so just disable its notifications from within the app. Then install ICS Messaging from the Google Play Store. Check that it works.
If this solution helps anyone else please let us all know. (Also if any other messaging apps, such as Go SMS, work for you.)

I am from Malaysia and our mobile spectrum is GSM. So far there isn't any problems with users using this device here. 3G works flawlessly as well.
I am planning to get this phone after selling off my Dell Streak 5. Is there NFC in this device?
I read one advert claiming that there is NFC in this device, and I asked my local seller and he verified it however I couldn't anything online regarding this device coming equipped with NFC. Would appreciate it if someone would be able to confirm it.

I just flashed this. ROM looks amazing Diablo. 2 things...
1- I can't seem to get the Mounts2SD to work. I can not get the button to work. It just sits on the first screen and I touch all over and I have tried flashing it 3 times and still can't get the button to work. I have not tried to re-download yet.
2- Is there a way to change the contacts page to a dark mode? It is white background and a light grey letters and is tough to see.
Other than that I am digging it so far.

I wonder why some are getting a good install and some aren't,check the MD5SUM guys and dont download from your phone, sometimes it will give you a bad download. Not saying your not,but make sure to follow the instructs.
Edit: I just reflashed the rom again and im not getting a root/su issue. Is this an issue when using Mounts2SD? or a general issue?

I tried downloading 3 times now and flashing each different one. Checked m5sum and it matches. Same problem, it doesn't recognize my root. When I open Terminal it says at the top "void endpwent( ) (3) is not implemented on Android" Next line says "sh-4.1$ export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH" Kinda glad to see someone else has the same problem and I'm not going crazy. Love the theme on this one. Let me know if I can give you any more information.
The issue occurs on first boot before I even try to flash mounts2sd. I'm following the instructions word for word. Wiping everything 3x
I have re-flashed everything and tried the mount2sd and still says no root access. I opened up Titanium and it basically says the same thing, but it shows The space used for the system ROM, Internal, SD card and SD card(a2sd). Plus I have a good percentage of the apps I have on my last rom I used in the app drawer.

Ok,ill check this out tonite and see what i can come up with for you guys.
hi..
i'm narrowing my previous question, and placing it in it's own thread as it seem to more common
before rooting the main problem i have is to actually download CWM, almost all the threads i've seen provide you with the same link to the odin flashble cwm, (3a) which simply won't install what ever package i give it (whether be it su, or another cwm or twrp ,always the same message for signature verification), so it doesn't help if i see an "updated" version cwm which can be flashed by cwm, as i have a chicken and currently laying the egg to spawn it.
so the question is, where can i find ANOTHER cwm-recovery which can be flashed by ODIN?

Hopefully, I'm not misunderstanding your question -- I was able to root my Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G (including installing CWM over ODIN) following these instructions, the version of ODIN/CWM linked there works. (Read the comments if you have any issues -- as the instructions aren't perfect.)
In case the link dies, here are duplicates of the links:
1. ClockworkMod Recovery (It’s attached in the post)
2. SuperSU (Download the Recovery flashable version)
3. Odin
Also, if you're looking for a place to start, I found this thread extremely helpful.
Let me know if this answers your question or not, hopefully this helps someone.
sadly it's the same things i downloaded
the root problem as far as i know is the cwm, it will not install ANYTHING, not superSU, not twrp, it will always fail with signature verification error, at the time i googled a little, http://forums.androidcentral.com/t-galaxy-s-ii/126545-what-causing-my-cwm-error-solved.html and it seems that this cwm doesn't allow to turn the signature check, thus my quest for another cwm, or a twrp i can flash with odin.

CWM does allow you to disable signature check, but it's already off by default (it was for me -- the one I linked to allows it) -- I think it's in the advanced menu -- you're sure you're choosing the right options in ODIN (PDA, and checking the right boxes?), and ODIN says 1/1 succeeded or whatever? You're not checking reboot? You're pulling the battery at the right time, and that you're booting into CWM (and not the stock re-flasher app)?
Can you attach a picture of what you're seeing on your phone?

I don't think you flashed CWM with ODIN correctly -- it should say "CWM-based Recovery v6.0.1.2" at the top and bottom -- it looks like this:

In ODIN, did you check the box that says "Phone Bootloader Update", and you selected the .md5 file under the PDA section? And it said 1/1 updated? And then you pulled the battery? (like in the instructions I linked to?)
yes i realize the issue now
i don't what happened that made me thing i updaded the cwm.
so now i'm rooted. thanks.
i'm guessing there's still no custom "bloatless" rom around right?

Woot. Would be awesome if you hit the "thanks" -- button, I'm currently at 0, and could use some street cred around here. :good:
As for custom roms, there is one that claims to be bloatless in the table of contents thread that I linked to earlier. But I can't get it to flash. I think I might be doing something wrong. :silly:
I have an open thread about what's the best rom, right now, as the only options appear to be: stock (bleh), bloatless stock (doesn't flash with cwm), and Cyanogen 10.1 (but there is no real "stable" release, even the "unofficial 13-03-09" one is broken in some ways). If you can answer any of those questions, I'd be very thankful.
Edit: Also, don't bother with the stock tethering fix or whatever that is linked there unless you've backed up your stuff first -- every attempt I've made to flash that (even on stock) just borked my phone and made it not boot.
OH SNAP!
Looks like there is a newer ODIN flashable version of CWM for our phones (and seriously, don't use the 6.0.1.2 one for any 4.2.x roms, you'll wind up with weird folder structures on your phone like sdcard/0/0/0/0/..../0 etc. -- definitely use the newer one!)

Yeah... that's what I'm talking about -- and there's a new one out every day. So, if you've flashed more than one with CWM 6.0.1.2 you'll end up with a weird folder structure on the root of your /sdcard/ -- each time you flash one of the 4.2 roms, it adds another /0/ so you end up with /sdcard/0/0/0/0/0/.../0 -- etc. -- So don't do that. Use CWM 6.0.2.8 -- it's fixed in 6.0.2.8 -- it will flash it normally, and you won't end up with a million nested /0/ folders.
so far i've only flashed the stock rom
is CM really worth it above the stock one?

YES.
Regarding the nested "0" folder issue, I have about 5 or 6 of those before I realized what was happening and flashed TWRP. What is the best way to get rid of those "0" folders? I assume I should not just delete the base one.

CM10.1 - 3.4 kernel I assume.
If so, then you need to update your bootloader & modem for wifi to work properly on 3.4 (read original post on 3.4 thread for download links etc.)

Um, really dumb question I feel. Where can I find this CWM (6.0.2.8) version for the Relay? Or does CWM work regardless of the device it's been flashed on?

Like I said, upgrade to CWM 6.0.2.8 or newer (or TWRP, I've read, but I haven't tested), then it won't create anymore new nested /0/ folders.
To get rid of the existing ones, in CWM 6.0.2.8 - go to "mounts and storage" and select "format /sdcard" -- (you'll probably want to just go through and format everything except for /external_sd and then reinstall the latest nightly Cyanogen 10.1 or JB stock.)

Hi all, I have a rooted HTC Sensation 4G, which still has T-Mo provided ICS 4.0.3 and I assume Sense 3.6. I never put any other ROMs in, not sure how, just wanted root for stuff like tethering, call recording, etc. The phone has been getting more and more slow as time goes on, and has gotten to the point lately I have nothing left to lose. When making a call, the Contacts lists stays up a good 60 seconds or so before the screen comes up where t is actually dialing for you, or if I manually put a phone number in, it just hangs there just as long before the phone takes over to actually make the call. And do just about anything else, when getting out of what your were doing, I get the white HTC screen, then loading the screen with the time and temp which takes a good 30 seconds. Using the browser often just cuts me off and reverts to the home screen.
I thought finally getting rid of the bloatware may help, got rid of NOVA, Lookout, a lot of wallpapers and widgets I don't use, something called CS and a couple others I looked up online which says is OK to delete, as well as Facebook, Youtube, TV apps, etc.
After I was done, first thing I noticed, no time and temp. display. I used an app called NoBloat and checked "backup and delete" on all I wanted to get rid of. I started trying to install from NoBloat's back-up folder, and even though says installing, I could tell they weren't when I looked for the installations. I found the NoBloat folder on my SD card, and tried the .apk's from there, and the majority would say "Can't install" or something similar. I then wanted to take a screenshot of something, and that function is gone.
I would like to do a reset to start from scratch without losing root. I found out the Senastion is a tough one to root and I paid someone to do it and it took 2 days before I could pick it up. Is there a way to reset without losing root since I still have stock 4.0.3 in it? Thanks much.
do you have a custom recovery installed?
Hi, if you mean a custom ROM, no. But if any of these will help, I have BusyBox Free, NoBloat, ROM Manager, ROM Toolbox Lite, Root Browser Lite, Root Checker, Super SU, SuperUser, SuperUser Whitelist, Terminal Emulator, and Titanium Backup installed. I never backed anything up with Titanium BU. Was one of those things I was going to lean to use, but didn't yet. I assume I need to install a custom ROM to get total functionality back without losing root, would be nice to get Kit Kat on this (or is this phone too old to do much with?)
I did manage to install "Sense flip clock & weather" from Google Play which broght back time and temp., and also Screenshot Ultimate which seems to work, but not as easy to use as the native app. A bunch of other screenshot apps seemed not to work at all, so now I can basically get by the way it is now, but still need to get the 60 second dialing lag fixed which is still there, so I'm assuming a fresh ROM install. Thankfully my Wifi Tether app still works. Thanks.

not a custom rom
a custom recovery such as 4ext ,cwm ,TWRP
if you want to use a custom rom you must have a custom recovery installed
by the way all custom roms come pre-rooted
so don't worry about root(it is the easiest part)
can you post your bootloader details?
Hi rzr86, here is the screen I got, I didn't know if/how to proceed any further. I also noticed I have ClockWorkMod installed if that helps, I had the phone rooted around August of 2013 if that helps, so I think all the apps to do with rooting have not been updated, Thanks again.

i suggest to change your recovery to 4ext(since you are on S-ON 4ext has smartflash feature which flashes the boot.img for you while flashing a new rom)
take here the latest version of 4ext recovery
http://www.4shared.com/zip/WnSyLWMaba/4EXT_Recovery_Touch_v1006_RC3_.html
extract the recovery.img and flash it via fastboot command
the command is fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
if you stay with cwm recovery you will have to flash the boot.img manually while flashing a new rom
Hi rzr86, thanks agin, I will do this later tonight when expecting no phone calls. So I would delete the clockwork app, and put the recovery.img from the zip file into my SD card, and tap that, or do I go into the bootloader menu again and tap FASTBOOT and put in the command? Any suggestions on what a good ROM for me would be? I assume the 4EXT Touch Recovery automatically backs up what I have now, or prompts me to? Thanks again.

no don't put the recovery.img in your sdcard
connect your device in your pc in fastboot usb mode
extract the recovery.img from the zip and place it in your adb/fastboot folder on your pc
on that folder open a command window and type the command
don't worry it will overwrite the cwm recovery
AFAIK 4ext restores backups made by cwm because 4ext is based on cwm
about rom you can try vipers 5.3.0 (jelly bean with sense)
Thanks once more rzr86, I think I have enough info to handle it from here, and I'll look up the vipers 5.3.0. I know a lot of people say Sense is worthless and a memory hog, but I'm used to it now, and I'm sure with the new ROM some of that memory will be freed up from bloatware. I'll try the new recovery app later tonight, and I assume I can wait another day to put in the viper ROM if needed. Guess I should back my SD card up, even though I assume none of this touches the SD card. Does the SIM card need to be in, as I have an old Dash I can put the SIM in for now till I'm done. Thanks much again.

Not getting too far, give up for tonight. Used "Minimal ADB and Flashboot" app, stays on "waiting for device". I tried modifying the name as recovery in the file name twice. I tried command from the folder I unzipped the recovery.img to, as well as trying to copy recovery.img to the Minimal program folder and try from there. I read I don't need the whole huge ADB download for what I'm doing on another site. I used this to get Minimal:

don't use any program
just open a command window in that folder where you have adb/fastboot files
edit: by the way did you select fastboot when you connected the device to pc?(from the bootloader screen)
I used the Fastboot under settings, I'll try the Fastboot by pressing Vol down and Power, wasn't sure which to use, thanks again, and will do without launching a program later in today. I should have known better to try the Fastboot screen if the other didn't work.
Hi rzr86, just tried again, powered up phone using vol down and power, have bootloader screen, selected Fastboot. Also gives other options like Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader, and Power Down. If I hit power, says Hboot, then checks something real fast something about SD card and no image?. and the prompt is on Fastboot again, and it does say "Fastboot USB", and I can hear the sound on the PC that the USB is connected. I tried from the original adb-fastboot folder I made and also tried unzipping into a new folder as seen in the pic, still getting "fastboot not recognized, Thanks again.
...".
PS I noticed under Recovery Options says "install from SD card" or something to that effect, would this help? (I just rebooted my phone into normal mode), maybe I should try the other way?

actually the zip isn't a flashable one
so you can't use that option
try this way
download and install 4ext updater app(link in my signature)
open the app and select to install 4ext recovery touch
it will do the job for you

Success! Thank you! I downloaded and installed RC2, hope that's good, as I feel more comfortable with that vs. RC3 still in testing stage. I will take a night of rest since it's Saturday night here and feel like doing something other than phones the rest of the night, LOL. I assume I'm good to go with putting viper530 in, will try on my own tomorrow night, I assume done in a similar way. Funny last couple of days, haven't been getting as long as a delay making calls usually, sometimes go thru right away instead of lagging for often near a full minute, but regardless I think I should go ahead with a new ROM. I assume viper530 compatible with T-Mobile USA. Thanks much again, rzr86!

OK, I think I did the backup right. I just chose the 4EXT app, it booted into recovery screen, I found Backup from Recovery and backup, chose Backup, then went back to Advanced and chose all 4 from there, I think they were system, boot, data, and cache. Rebooted, saved my whole SD card to my PC via the USB "use as disk drive" option. On the backup screen, the word "nandroid" was nowhere to be found (as some other screenshots showed using CWM), just said 4EXT Recovery something, pic attached. I assume I did right. Does 4EXT store the backup in the ClockWorkMod folder on the SD card? Seems that way to me, as now folders showing a bunch of .tar files under the "backup" folder, and the system, boot, cache, and data folders under the "Advanced" folder, and I don't see much in the 4EXT folder. I also backed up what I could using Titanium backup the other day.
Next I went into your signature and clicked the viper 530 link, and all I see on the resulting page is viper 521. Is there a link you have to 530, or should I use 521? I assume I use 4EXT to flash the new ROM, but from the SD card, thanks again, guess almost there.

nandroid is the backup you made
and there is no need to make an advanced(advanced backups specific partitions of your rom)
just go backup/restore-> backup and you are done(it backups everything)
and yes the backup is located to the cwm folder of your sdcard
there are links for 5.3.0 in the rom thread but if you can't find them take it from here
