[Q] Franco kernel for N5 + ART = ? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does the Franco kernel play nice with ART? I've read some ominous things about this combination, so I wanted some clarification.

i exclusively use ART and Franco Kernel and I haven't had any issues

Good to know!
And sorry mod for posting this in general...

Contrary to what most reviews say I find ART a bit faster than dalvik, specially when switching apps. Ive been on franco with ART enabled for a couple of weeks and got no issues.

What reviews say ART is slower than dalvik?

Franco kernel and ART play very well together, I've been running his kernel exclusively (along with Cataclysm ROM) since I got the N5. Id make sure to follow settings that are tested to work, along with personal adjustments to suit your needs.

I run Franco + ART on Cataclysm and am really impressed with the performance. No issues running on my phone at all. However, my N5 has a tendency to go into a bootloop after flashing an updated version of Franco, and this has also been the case with a few others. Not a huge deal, but something I've noticed.

Are you using a CM-based ROM? They recently merged some patches from CAF that cause most custom kernels to bootloop. If you stick to AOSP-based ROMs you should be able to boot with custom kernels. Or go back to CM builds before Jan 18th.
Edit: Just to be on-topic. Also running Franco w/ ART for over a month now. Have had no issues beyond the occasional app that isn't yet compatible. Even most of those seem to be working nowadays though.

Regarding Xposed and gravity box...

I just purchased a new Nexus 5 coming from a Note 3 (jellybeans ROM)
On that rom I had some xposed modules setup.
Is it accurate that Gravity Box is designed for AOSP based roms and I should stick to that that module? Or can I use any of them without an issue?
Thanks!

Thanks. With the amount of customization given now with the modules, I'm debating on either rooting and unlocking, flashing Francos kernel and just using the modules... Or, flashing a rom like Slim kat.
Any recommendations? There are so many aosp roms to choose from with a Nexus device. It was so easy on a locked down VZW note 3. Only 2 or 3 roms and no kernels. [emoji1]

You should root then install xposed along with the GB module with stock Google rom. Use it for a few days see what you think. I'd put $ on you liking that combination "as is".
As for roms I'd suggest you do research. If this turns into a rom suggestion thread then it will be locked asap.
Of course this is all of my own opinion GL!

Ha! Yea, I don't want to start another "best rom" thread. I don't think xda could handle another one of those.
I'm definitely going to root and unlock and try stock for a week or so with some module settings.
My biggest concern is battery life.
Slimkat is a beast !

Battery life (for me) equals the moto X and surpasses the GS4. It's so individual ya know! I get 4.5 to 5 hours screen on time in about a 18-22 hour period per charge on wifi and 3.5 to 4 hours screen on time in about a 14-18 hour period on 4g/3g/LTE. Hope that helps

+1 for stock + GB...you'll find many others who agree. I've tried a few of the top roms but I've yet to find one with as many customizations as GB. I find I get better battery life with Franco kernel too, specifically r20 (ymmv).

I'm definitely flashing Francos Kernel but I'm still deciding on which one. I'm seeing a few bug complaints on R35 and R37...so that's still up for debate.

I flashed r32 around the time it was released and my battery life was noticeably worse than on r20, so I flashed back and have been happy ever since so haven't had the urge to update again. It does seem to vary per device though, so might be worth testing each for a few days.

[Q] Running really slow when hot

Hi,
been running CM since CM7 and loving it! I never had a problem until now.
Now running CM11 7/14 nightly on my i535, and the phone runs really slow when hot, like when I use the browser a lot or when using navigation. By slow I mean unusable slow. This has been happening for a couple of months now. For the latest nightly, I did system reset and cleared the cache but it's still happening.
Does anybody know what to do?
Try a different kernal. Are you overclocking your phone? There really isn't one thing that can cause that issue.

I'm running the default kernel with the default settings. What kernel do you suggest?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1853816
This is my personal favorite kernel. Comes with an easy app Ktweaker to play with voltages and overclocking.

I installed the kernel and my problem is solved! I just tested a navigation and it did not slow to a crawl. The phone HOT indeed (brightness on full).
I think the default cm11 thermal stuff on our device may be not right.
Thanks!

[Q] Alternate Kernel for CM11 M8

I am using the CM11 M8 on my Nexus 5. What Kernels are compatible with it? I have been a big fan of CodeBlue and ElementalX but I am not sure if either of these work with CM11.
All CAF Kernels work with CM11. ElementalX works with cm. It has both AOSP and a CAF version. You need to flash the CAF one!

The min frequency isn't stuck. When you touch the screen, flar2 has set the freq going up to around 1200mhz so that there isn't any lag. If it's indeed getting stuck for you, you must have installed a kernel tweaker app which is causing this. Been using ElementalX since ages without a hitch.

Not sure about the kernel in question, but I've absolutely seen SlimKat's kernel do that. No kernel tweaker app, just system monitor.
It seems minor hardware variations can cause only certain people to have issues with certain kernels. Or if there is an issue in the code, can be exacerbated by hardware variations.

Oh I see. I've seen quite a few people who complain about this frequency thing in the ElementalX thread as well and most of them had a tweaker installed so I thought it's an end user's error. You could be right though, not all phones are made the same.
I'm using Latest Chaos nightly. Performance/Battery life is amazing to my usage, so i'm recommending you to give it a chance. ElementalX is good too, but you should try them both for a day or two and then deside which one suits you best. You can grab it there:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...-kernel-chaos-12-0-nxtweaks-app-13-0-t2551441
It's CAF kernel, so it's compatible with Cyanogenmod. Happy flashing
I'm on the latest CM11 nightly with chaos kernel stable 13.1 and I'm loving it. Performance is awesome and I'm right on track for a 5 hour screen on time with heavy usage.

yes, that's the combo i'm using right now and i see no lag whatsoever. I'm satisfied with stock that i even didn't speed up animations to x.5 , which i used to do on all android versions since Jelly Bean.
If you prefer custom kernels, i've had a great experience on kitkat with elementalX, haven't tried it on lollipop yet though.
I'm just saying that one of the changes you made is probably causing the sluggishness, it might not be Franco kernel, but that's a variable you can change for a start and see if there's any difference.

Yeh I tried elemental but I was getting poor battery life. Decided to try franco, seems like the same thing except unstable. Sped up the kernel to 1479 or something like that, seems to be a little better now. Let's see I guess.

the stock CPU clock for each core is 2.26GHz, so 1479 (1.4GHz) is quite a notable underclock, no wonder you are getting sluggish performance. it's like you have activated battery saving mode all the time.
Lollipop is a lot of things but sluggish is certainly not one of them. I'm running N5X which is an AOSP build of 5.0 and it's pretty great. Using the stock kernel with it, I don't like using custom kernels anymore.

[Q]Nexus 5 Best rom , kernel for battery life without losing performance[CAF VS AOSP]

Hi ,
I have tried allot of roms and i have tried franco kernel. im trying the latest 'stable' version of nougat from today (AOSP)
My question is, and i know it has be asked before and it usually is preferences. What rom that is VERY STABLE, gives the best battery life without it crashing any apps?
The stock is OK but i don't get good battery life or stability of it atm (4.4.2). have tried 6.0 but it didn't run like i wanted it to run, felt a little slow, and i will probably feel the same about nougat definatly because its a little bit beta ish atm.
The roms that i like the best are the once that are almost completely empty with PICO Gapps + Google maps. no bloatware, no extra features, no special customization just stable, smooth, good battery life aosp lovelyness.
Will i get any benefits in trying a CAF rom? and how do i go to CAF? is it just installing a CAF kernel, rom and TWRP version?
are their any CAF roms that are truly empty (aosp like) ?
and is CAF still a thing because i notice CM left it behind a while ago.
Will playing around with stuff like smart launcher, which are a little bit more basic give me what i want? and Ram managing and phone cleaning software like Cleaner master? because it feels like it helps a little but i have read that it might not be very healthy for ur performance yet the 2GB seems a little bit of a bottleneck atm and it seems to give me a slight boost that i require from time to time when clearing the ram.
also will xposed give me addons etc that might help or is it the same thing as the cleaner master story?
Franco kernel did give me a better battery life. but still not 100% what i wanted (yet i am beginning to think that i might have hit the maximum battery life ,that my battery might be slightly worn out and might need a replacement)
Sorry if this question annoys people because i know there is allot of info to be found and people ask this allot but i can't really seem to find a 100% answers as i want em to be.
Thanks in advance
Tell me what options do i have to get the Lightweight, long battery life, fast simple phone that i desire (Mobile Data needs to be on 24/7)
Pure Nexus with Franco Kernel is a really great setup, especially if you use FKUpdater. Use the Battery Saver profile and the battery life is perfect, with decent enough performance. I've tried multiple CM13 CAF builds, but I don't think I could live without Franco Kernel.
what about security patches?

I agree, this setup is really great.... except. How do you apply the monthly security patches? Automatic OTA doesn't like SU or custom kernel or custom recovery. I can't seem to find the OTA images to sideload. So a full adb load of _everything_ followed by reinstallation and rerooting? I've looked all over the forum and couldn't find a good way to get those pesky security updates.
Hi, I'm using stock AOSP with ElementalX kernel and I find this team really good. Battery life is decent with a normal usage without games (I usually arrive at the end of the day) also with T2W features active, my nexus have more than 2 years so battery is not so young. The only problem is that the official ElementalX app is not free but doesn't cost so much. I've never tried franco but I've heard great things about it.
About the monthly update I followed this procedure and everything went fine: http://elementalx.org/how-to-install-android-monthly-security-updates/ I'm not 100% sure that it works with every kernel because you will reflash the stock kernel and ramdisk.

The best battery life I've ever had has been with Pure Nexus and Franco Kernel r89. But a CAF CM14 build should give good results too.
Use CM13 CAF builds. You never come back to AOSP again. Amazing performance and battery backup.
