You're in fastboot. Just press the power button to reboot the phone or use the volume buttons to select a different option.

You do know some people don't give a crap about unlocking/rooting a phone? I've actually relocked and gone back to 100% stock as I have no need to be unlocked any more

Yep, and that's fine but there could be a day when something goes wrong where that bootloader could come in handy. Always good to know your phone, especially if you're in a development forum.

You do know going on fastboot does not only help with unlocking/rooting a phone right? We're just saying that the OP is just glad he knew about fastboot and the potential it can do if something goes horribly wrong with his phone.

But it did gave me a mini heart attack.I was like "waaatttt" and as for rooting:its really hard for beginners!.n5 is my first android, previous phone was iPhone 5.Jailbreaking the iPhone was so easy compared to all technical stuff that comes with rooting. Anyway my friend is rooting my n5 for me yesterday.i will watch him to do it(this sounded wrong)

Dev will always be in minority, its obvious.and as for xda developers the name does suggest it for developers and wires and 2+2=5 stuff and whatnot.but yeah the site is filled noobs and newbies.but those devs rocks!

Well maybe those people would find a forum like Android Central better suited to their needs. As previously stated, XDA is a development forum, not a general Android support forum. If they aren't planning on rooting, then XDA really isn't for them.

[DUMP] Nexus S System Dump

Here is a dump of the Nexus S system.
Bout all you can really get atm, as they have no root, no custom recovery, etc.
Thanks to k0mpresd for this.
http://efragtv.com/android/nexus/system.tar.gz
Have fun
Not sure what can really be pulled from it, if anything can, but I'm going to download & give it a shot anyway
Meh, it's there for anyone who cares to get anything from it
Problem is they don't have root and whatnot yet, so it hinders getting much of anything else from it.
And of course, no source doesn't help

Have I just "bricked" my new phone - Nexus S 4G

Forum says no noobs but, the other forum options didn't seem to fit with my issue. If this is in the wrong place, please point that out to me.
I just purchased my NS4G today and tried rooting it. The end result leaves me at a Google screen with a padlock on the bottom.
I have searched a lot and have read about a lot of fixes but, none of them are working. I am at my wits end.
I tried to download recovery images and flash them but my CMD just says cannot determine image filename for 'recovery.img'
I have tried removing the battery, entering recovery mode and wiping everything to no avail.
Am I completely screwed?
Ok, so I was able to get the recovery image flashed, but i rebooted and still get the google screen.
Any tips?
Ok, making some progress. I got the ClockworkMod Recovery working however, I cannot mount my phone..
I've installed the Samsung drivers, ADB, and Android SDK, but I'm not able to send Superuser to the device..
Any clues?
Allow me to add to my external monologue.
I can't seem to mount my NS4G as a USB Mass Storage device. Windows 7 is not recognizing the phone...
What to do, what to do...
So now I really am stuck. I can't load this Superuser zip onto the phone because my USB Mass Storage is not working.
Please, anyone, lend a guy a hand. I'm confused and worried.
Thank you.

Looks like the devs are not working on Root for 1.85

Arg....seems like the devs have moved on to getting s-off and coming out with new roms and have given up on finding exploits to root 1.85. The threads for root have been empty for a while now...wondering if its time to exchange the phone or return it and want for the sg3?
I know i'm not the only person frustrated for upgrading to 1.85....
I thought you could RUU back to 1.82 if you wanted and then root?

You can. That is what I did. It's pretty simple.
Revert to 1.82, root,
one click superCID
relock in fast boot
ruu 1.85
flash the unlock token from fastboot, it took me a few tries before it took
flash a recovery (twrp is working well for us right now)
and then use the recovery to flash the SU zip file. Then you're all set
Well this is how it works.
Once you update your RUU to 1.85 then install CWM (flashing utility in recovery) You will just flash the Rom you wish this will give you root.
Hope this clears things up?
I'm unclear on the rooted 1.85 but from what I gather you have to have done superCID hack before upgrading to be able to gain root. I believe you have to also have superCID to do ruu to a previous firmware. I may be wrong but if your on 1.85 without superCID I think your SOL for now atleast.

Yes, it's simply amazing how many people will write such non-useful crap that serves no useful purpose.
Look, we've all been there. We all had to learn from the beginning at some point.
I'm also sick of people lobbing ignorant comments my way when it comes to some of the things I do for others, especially here on xda. Case in point ...
Over the last three days I've prepared a 36-page manual that describes, in great detail, how to do virtually everything on a ONE X. Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678308
It's sad when, after working an average of 70 hours per week as President an owner of my LED lighting company, plus having a 2-1/2-year-old at home, who's a wonderful challenge, plus having issues with my 82-year-old mother suffering from Alzheimers, I still MAKE time to help others, most especially here on xda. Why? Because it's the right thing to do. As I said above, we've all been there, and I'm quite sick and tired of so many others (THEY shall remain nameless), who can't spend a few extra seconds of their precious time to provide a better explanation than the simple "just do it in fastboot," or "use adb," etc.
Yes, I've now learned exactly what these two simple statements mean, but it really would have been nice, and far, far, far easier not just for me, but everyone if, instead of saying the following ...
flash it in fastboot
...they instead said something like ...
open a command prompt, navigate to your adb folder, and flash in fastboot using the following line:
fastboot flash recovery xxxxxxx.img
Wow, it took me an extra 10 seconds. Oh, my goodness, my fingers are now so sore. I think I'll head to the hospital. Be back later.
Peter
P.S. And don't anyone dare tell me, like someone did yesterday, that I should basically shut up and stop "sassing" (their word) the developers because they work so hard at what they do. You know, I probably work as hard if not MUCH harder than most of them, yet I will always try my very best to give some of my time to others. Again, as I said above, it's the right thing to do. You know, maybe if more people did just that, the world wouldn't be so full of self-centred, egotistical ingrates.

Wow. All that and I'm not sure it will even work. Makes me realize how nice it is to have devices like the Nexus that are not locked down as much as HTCs latest on AT&T.
It also seems like Samsung devices are not as difficult to deal with than HTC and the locked bootloader and S-On.

You are forced to take responsibility for your own misstakes. In this case buying a phone which bootloader is unlockable. Nobody held a gun to your head and forced you to, YOU chose it without thinking about it.
And asking ppl to "shut up" while they are agreeing with you and trying to show compasion is....as dumb as it gets.

You got a point there. I mean what if you bought it online? there's NO way you can access the phone to see if it's bootloader allowed to be unlocked and not only that but I don't think anyone can remember that code to access the system menu or whatever it's called. @Redzo and @ Elnazhox you're both right. @elnazhox you should've researched a bit more, and @ Redzo it's not possible to access the system menu or whatever when you're buying it online.

scumpicule/Sebestian wants to do both free of charge, but I replied that shall donate, on line using Team Viewer and Skype, but the only drawback is he doesn't have a OPO.
Best Regards, shall keep you updated.

Even if he doesn't have a OnePlus One, it's still fairly straight forward, but you should still take the help as they should 'hopefully' know what should be happening.
From my experience, I would highly recommend NOT rooting on windows xp as you'll have driver issues. Windows 7/8 is fine; I have no experience with a Mac.
True, but I have W7 running and Seb installed the drivers fine.
Some smart member PM me, unlock boot loader, root, flash my Chinese OPOs.
Ready to donate.
Thanks.

IF you have to have someone else root your phone then what do you plan on doing if whatever you do with it afterwards gets messed up. May I suggest you try and figure it out as it will only lead you down a darker path if something goes wrong and you dont know what to do....

I have to agree here. Having someone else unlock/root your device is an awful idea. The whole unlocking process is an essential learning experience, if you skip that you're heading into dangerous waters. If/when something goes wrong you'll have no idea what to do, and the first thing you'll do then is create an unnecessary thread begging for someone to fix your phone. OP, do yourself a huge favour and start reading, then do some more reading, and then more reading, see where I'm going here?

No, not a toolkit, they don't help you learn anything. Just have a read through the guides in the general section, and there are beginners threads all over XDA that are full of valuable information.

You didn't read a thing I said before did you. I'm not going to unlock your device for you. I don't want or need your money. Getting someone else to unlock your device for you is a very bad idea for the reasons I outlined in my previous post.
This phone is very easy to unlock, all you need to do is follow some simple instructions. You'll find them here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2788632
If you don't want to learn how to do this then you really shouldn't be modifying your device in the first place. Having a modified device requires a certain level of knowledge so that you don't brick your phone, if you don't want to spend the time learning then you're best off just leaving the phone stock.
