You could find answer to that question and more, just by searching in the S3 thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710613

Hi to all!
I'm a new member here and I'm hoping that you guys could help me with my simple question. I'm very new with Android OS since I've been an iPhone user for the past 2 years. So here it is:
I just bought an UNLOCKED AT&T SGH-i727 from a store here in SAIPAN, MP and I'm planning to update my Gingerbread 2.3.5 to 2.3.6. Will it lose the UNLOCK if I do it? I believe the phone is NOT ROOTED and it was just unlock using an UNLOCK CODE. Also, when I tried to check for SOFTWARE UPDATE it says like my SGH-i727's firmware is up to date which is GINGERBREAD 2.3.5 but I believe there is 2.3.6 already as I saw on my friend's i727. Any idea?
PLEASE HELP. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
You won't lose unlock.
Yes there is an update. You have to be sure you have stock 3e recovery and all bloat intact and nothing frozen. You may not see the update right away. It might take a while.
Why you would want a stock update, I don't know.

Thanks for your response.
And that's the problem I don't have anything that you've said, idk where go get them. Could you help me with that?

Ok...do you know the difference between a custom recovery like cwm and the stock 3e recovery?
If you search the general section I have a stock tar hosted there. Sammobile stock tar should find it

You need to tell us what rom version you're running? Go into settings->about phone and report the rom version.(like 4.1.2 or 4.3 etc..)

You have a locked bootloader, and you can't unlock it.
You can only root, install safestrap, and flash touchwiz 4.3 roms only.

Is this true for all 4.3 or just those with Knox? Last night I was trying to update from cm10.2 to cm11 and realised that trwp needed an update. After a some failed boots pf cm10 and 11 I decided to just go back to stock since I need it during the day..and unknowingly put the dreaded 4.3 on via odin. I understand how to get root...but what I really want is my bootloader again. Did I screw myself by putting 4.3 on? Thanks.

You're stuck on 4.3 now, your bootloader is locked. Using Odin to load a stock 4.3 firmware is the exact same thing.
You should've odin'd a stock 4.1.2 firmware, but it's too late now.

I'm in the same boat with 4.3 - rooted with saferoot, but when I went to download safestrap to flash the only customs roms I can (TW), I don't see a download for the SCH-i535. The closest I see is for S4. Where can I get the right Safestrap download?
Thanks for your help.

Awesome. This is exactly what I was looking for. I'm pretty set on doing this now, but I'm trying to find a solid rom to flash once I get Safestrap. Any suggestions? All I've found so far are S4 roms. The Google Play Edition rom looks pretty good.
Thanks again for your help.
I hear good word from users on old&slow tw rom over on Android development section

Don't flash any ROMs for the S4 onto your S3. Through safestrap you can flash almost any of the 4.3 TW (ML1) ROMs found in this section:

If he rooted his Verizon S3 on VRBMF1 4.1.2, then he could use EZ Unlock v1.2 to unlock the bootloader. Or he could use Casual.

Great. Now if they accidentally or intentionally take the 4.3 VRUCML1 OTA, using EZ Unlock will cause a bootloader hard brick. Please make sure your friend understands this.

I was wondering how to downgrade from 4.3 to 4.1.2 on a verizon galaxy s3. Is it even possible? If so, please explain how I could downgrade.
I think you're stuck on 4.3. I could be mistaken but I believe there is some info on it here somewhere in the forums. Good luck.

No, you cannot downgrade to 4.1.2 if you took the official 4.3 OTA, you will hard brick your device. All the info you need can be found in this thread:

If its on 4.3 your stuck on a locked bootloader, unless it's a custom 4.3 rom and there wasn't an OTA taken after 4.1.2

Your on a locked bootloader and you cannot go back to 4.1.2. You can only flash TouchWiz Roms that are on the NC1 baseband

The sim is unlocked so that shouldn't be an issue. As far as roms your limited as to whats available on the NC1 locked bootloader. Here is the thread that lists the roms available on that specific firmware, do not attempt to flash anything else

3 Roms, Superlite, stock and Paul Pizz. You cannot and it's nearly impossible to downgrade. A jtag is the only option. Attempting to downgrade will brick your device

Honestly I wouldn't know. I have an unlocked bootloader. You'd have to ask someone else on that one. There are apps in the play store to check the IMEI. Unsure what you would even need the test mode for as they have disabled most of the testing on the S3 models

Do you know what that means? (on picture). how can we know the device is already unlocked bootloader?
That means nothing much, only that knox/firmware knows that you flashed odin or another ROM.
Go into the stock recovery and post a picture of that.
If it DOES NOT SAY NE1, your bootloader can be unlocked AFAIK.
If it DOES SAY NE1, JTAG is your only hope to downgrade(and it isn't worth it on a device this old imo)
