[HELP] IMEI No. Unknown - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

One of my friend is facing issues while using Nexus 5. His phone is unrooted. As of now, he can't
-see his IMEI No,
-save a screenshot (he can take it)
-phone showing empty folder when connected to PC
-wipe cache partition via stock recovery
What he did ? he just restarted his phone via stock recovery. i dunno why. Any help appreaciated. TIA.

Flash stock cache.img and if that doesn't work, flash all stock images. All data will be lost.
See the flashing stock sticky in general

Flash the latest factory image via fastboot ??
or cache.img

Flash the factory image and try again. If it's still not there the EFS partition is borked and the phone is dead (can't be fixed as the EFS is specific to each device)

Well, your friend has done something so have him flash the factory image in its entirety and see what happens. If he's 100% stock (not unlocked) he should be OK

He doesn't wanna lose his data. he'll lose all data if he unlocks the bootloader.

Dude, the data is GONE! The only question is whether he wants his phone fixed or not. If not, may as well close this thread

This is his stock recovery. You sure losing the data and unlocking and flashing factory image will fix the issue ?

Can't be sure it will fix it. As @EddyOS stated,.if EFS is corrupt, then there is no come back. Its unlikely without root to be corrupt - but not unfeasible.
There's no way to get the phone working without sacrificing the data unfortunately.

When I say the data is gone, its not actually gone. Its there. But there is no way to get it back. No way to get it off without root / custom recovery - which wipes the data
All the known recovery options I listed in my recovery thread but as you'll see, none are applicable

What if he has that flash chip got screwed up problem like the many others who are unable to flash unlock, or lock bootloader and flash stock rom, because they can not write to the phone because of the faulty flash chip?
If he was on stock and never root or unlocked bl then it is better to send it back to RMA

What do I do now?
Please explain, locked?
Turn it off if you can. If it's being wiped yank the battery out.
Use adb to install cwr. Then boot back into recovery and make a nandroid backup. Then share it!

how would I know if it's being wiped?
I'm guessing it would be if Google found out abou it. Or if the phone was stolen.

If you can't do anything they are probably trying to. TRY TO TURN IT OFF!
After you turn it off (by any means necessary including yanking the battery), follow the tutorial for rooting you phone then make a nandroid backup of what you have using CWM then mount your phone via USB and upload the back up.
After making a back up you may be able to safely wipe your cache and data. It could provide you with a working phone and provide the rest of us with a nice treat!

Not necessarily, It probably is but I don't know how google's software works. If I had to guess you could probably get it working again by wiping data and cache.
Be sure to remove your sim card as well.

Google has the ability to force ota to your phone and remote wipe
OP, if your phone works on T-Mobile 3G (not edge) follow this guide up until this point
select Recovery
then it should boot into this screen, if not then repeat the steps to download the image

at this point instead of installing a rooted rom go to back up and restore then select Backup.
wait for it to finish then connect your phone to your computer via usb then go back to the main menu and select Mounts and Storage then select mount USB storage.
search for a folder called clockworkmod on your computer and make it into a zip file. If you're awesome then you could upload it to mediafire and post the link.
Next select unmount after copying to your pc then go back to the main menu. Select wipe data/factory reset then select wipe cache partition. The phone is now factory reset and COULD boot.

Generic Cyanogenmod 10 help/discussion thread

Post in this thread if you need help getting CM to work, or if you have a problem and need help.
This thread is about:
- Discussing Cyanogenmod on the Optimus 3D/ 4G thrill/... phones
- Asking questions about Cyanogenmod
- Answering questions posted here
- Ask for help, because you can't get it to work
- Help people who can't figure something out
This thread is made with the intent to solve these problems:
1. Not have (duplicate) threads spamming this subforum asking for help
2. Create a nice environment for the developer of CM, Arcee, to work with. He has already said that the previous solution was a mess.
Arcee is a great guy, but messy forums can be very frustrating.
I'll make a posting guide.

Before moving from lg to cm10, you did not downgrade to 21d or similar? This, atm, seems to fix problems like the imei not showing based on input from the other users. Give it a try, make sure you do all the wipes etc. and it should work, it does here.

For some people this works, for others it doesn't. I haven't tried myself, but Arcee said the baseband shouldn't matter. With that knowledge I'll be patient for a bit before I try this.
Thanks for using this thread!
True, but most succes stories i've seen have been on v21d or lower, so if he/she is dying to get it working, this might be worth the 20 min ey
Think this thread is a good idea. I'm afraid there could be the time when arcee get totally ****ed up about the "It's not working, what should I do" posts from 1000 users in the thread in which he just wanted error logs. So let's whine here: it's not working for me either lol
To let this be a little useful can you please always post the newest version and maybe changelog/bugfixes und probably working combinations in post 1? The link http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?type=nightly&device=p920 is useful as well there. This thread is btw kinda the same: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1540163
This graph thing is cool, maybe we should make something similar:
Did you flash ICS before? - Yes - Downgrade and replace the u-boot & loader - etc - etc
- No - Did wipes? (Try again) - Fixed permissions? - Did you try flashing a clean KDZ? (try again) - Did you search the thread? - Still no solution? Post a q!

If i may add a question/suggestion:
With all the new nightlies comming out, what would be the best way to upgrade, is it ok to flash it over the old one for sure? Since i guess more people will want to upgrade it every once in a while we might also want to add that to the TS/FP?
Today i want downgrade form Xbsall 4.0.4 to install CM10.
So first i wipe my Rom, do a Factory Reset and flash the "BOOTV21E_AP" via Smartflash from the Resurrection Guide
I only do it with Smartflash because the Lg Flashtool no longer works for me....
Now I'm on Stock Gingerbread 2.3.5 but i can't root the phone via Megatrone....
I get an error that says "failed inufficented storage"
I have the same problem when i try to download something from the google playstore, in the store i get this error
"there is insufficient space on the device"
Anyone can help

But the phone says everytime "not enough space free, clean up your data and try it again"

I always get this after restoring stock. The trick is to factory reset the device again after restoring stock Rom. Just restart into recovery (shutdown, hold volume down + 3D button, start phone) and do a factory reset.

See FP's reply, and while you are at it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037287
Just this part of the 5th step:
"
type fastboot flash u-boot u-boot.img
fastboot flash x-loader x-loader.img
..
fastboot reboot
"
This ensures some other remainders from your ICS flash are removed aswell (this is not directly related to your space problem, but does enhance the chance of runnig CM 10 in the end)

If you already have cm installed, you won't need to factory reset again when you want to flash a new version.
The best way to update cyanogenmod is to go to settings, about phone, cyanogenmod updates. Set the update types to include nighties. The updater will do all the work for you.

Yes. Refer to my guide linked below HOWEVER ignore everything but the section about using RSD lite to FXZ flash the phone. Also substitute the 4.2.2 fxz file for the 4.4 file found at the same site that is linked for the 4.2.2 file.

Yes, I do know what you mean. I also encrypted my phone. When an encrypted phone is restarted, it first prompts for a passhrase/PIN code that's used to unlock the encryption key for storage.
I haven't restarted my phone since encrypting it (besides that first restart) and I am trying to see how long it will go without being restarted. I know - I'm weird - but I'm not wild about trying to figure out how to enter fastboot at the moment.
However, I saw a thread at android central where a guy factory reset his encrypted phone from recovery and was trying to get rid of the encryption prompt, and was able to do so from fastboot, so I think he'd know exactly what you have to do. The thread is here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/mo...ctory-reset-after-encrypting.html#post3396255
I'd PM drwtsn32 there - I'll bet he can help.

I finally restarted my encrypted phone. I was able to get into fastboot just like everybody else - hold volume down and power together from a powered down phone for at least 5 seconds, then release power while continuing to hold volume down - that starts Fastboot.

[Q] Impossible to flash bootloader/recovery/rom

Hi everyone !
Here I am in a really bad situation...
I bought a second hand phone with a rom issu and the guy who had it told me he ahd no time to waste trying to make it work again, I decided to buy it thinking that nothing could resist a factory reset via ADB.
But, and if I'm here today, it's because I'm in a such a situation, I need some help, and hope you guys can find a solution or at least some leads.
when I got it:
- model 16 GB D821
- The battery was not correctly attached in the phone (i did open it and put it back how it should be and seems to work)
- it is root, bootloader unlock, with Teamwin recovery version 2.6.3.2
- bootloader version HHZ11D
I can launch the teamwin recovery, it's asking for a password when it's starts, i don't know whay BUT I did a data format seeing that some people had some problem with it and did that to fix it
In Teamwin I got 0mb of storage and no OS installed, again it could be fixable via ADB
Now the best !
I can't flash anything on the phone. I can connect to it, it's well detected, I can control it (via ADB or Fastboot) and I can even had a temporary recovery with the nexus toolkit. but:
-Impossible to flash the bootloader, I do everything right, there is not "error" but at the end nothing changes, I'm back with the HHZ11D version and not the latest on I'm trying to get the HHZ11Z.
-Impossible to flash the recovery, same as the bootloader, version teamwin 2.6.3.2.
-impossible to flash a rom, and I don't have one anyway....
Here we are, I think I tried everything, but any clue would be appreciated. I hope I can fix this...
Thanks for your help.
And finally a picture of my fastboot -w when I do one, does it seem normal to you ?

Try in fastboot, fastboot oem lock. Then reboot and see if the bootloader is locked. I'm guessing it isn't and your emmc is bad.

No, you're hosed. Rma would be the option but not in your case. You're not going to be able to flash anything.

You may be lucky. here you will find the cache.img on method 2. If it doesn't work, do the method 1

Bricked? + FRP Moto G 3

Hello,
I have ran out of things to try with this phone - hoping someone out there knows if there is something that can be done.
Was given the device to remove the FRP (Factory reset protection). I set up fastboot, adb drivers and started messing around with it.
First of all, I tried upgrading to the newest MM version for it using the official images from the Motorola website - turns out it does not remove the google account lock, and the version was different than the ones they use in the 'FRP bypass' videos.
Then, I tried downgrading it to 5.1.1 (the same way I did to MM, using fastboot), and some of the commands failed - resulting in the phone not booting up, unless I go straight for the Vol down + power button to get to the bootloader.
Lastly, I tried flashing an older version of MM, only to get 'failed to validate system image' on boot (picture below). Is there something that could fix this/remove the damn FRP? The warranty does not matter, the thing is unusable - any kind of ROM etc. would do. Debugging is disabled.

The loader, currently:
was the phone stolen? because why would anyone hard reset their device, just asking.
dont know any solution for you
and btw.. NEVER try to downgrade your device it can cause problems, as you see
Not sure, it was given as a collateral for a job or something, and the guy disappeared. Basically, it is either try and make it usable or just throw it away. Trying to figure out what are the options at the moment.

You need to re-flash the latest firmware you flashed to your device boot again. To downgrade you have to unlock the bootloader first, but the OEM unlock setting in developer settings must be turned on, what I think you can't do with the FRP lock.

Ok, I flashed it again, it's 6.0.0. I even managed to get into the settings by doing the usual FRP bypass, however, this version does not have the developer options enabled by clicking the build number, and the 'users' setting is not there, therefore I cannot enable USB debugging like everyone does.
Your first error was upgrading to the latest version, because the newest version they have fixed.
I don't know if this will help, but in fastboot mode try to format system, and reflash the stock!

No, I have not. Had a real laugh though - I was able to access the settings - disable setup wizard - open chrome using google now, download apk's (like nova launcher) and have a home screen, browse apps all while FRP'ed. No go on the debugging/reset though :crying:
If can install apps try to root it with kingroot, and replace the stock recovery with TWRP, then format everything, and put another ROM into, after that reflash your stock. I don't know if you can do this without unlocking the bootloader.
I have seen some devices allowing do root + TWRP, without unlocking the bootloader. But you can try it!
