[Q] How to disable firmwar update notifications on Moto G ? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, a short time ago i have returned again on my Moto G from firmware version 4.4.2 kitkat to stock firmware 4.3 because of lag on vibrations. But i can not disable update notification anyway and it appears each 30 min. on screen. Have you any suggestion to disable that fool thing ? That's really started to annoy me.
(it doesn't work to disabling "Google-Service-Framework" on that path "Settings> Apps > All Services" )

If you're rooted, use a file manager app and go to system/app and rename 3c_ota.apk to 3c_ota.apk.bak & reboot

First install FOTAkill as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2249350
This worked for me for some weeks.
But then, messing about, I clicked on some Motorola app and it seems to have registered my ID with them. And I started getting prompts again. Then I noticed, via Titanium Backup, that there's a Motorola application associated with updates, 'MotorolaOTA 1.0'. Having frozen that, the prompts have stopped.

At least on the Verizon Moto G, I believe this is now "MotorolaOTA", package name com.motorola.ccc.ota. You can disable the package via root ("freeze" it) rather than renaming it (even with root methods that disallow writing to /system).
The APK is located at /system/priv-app/3c_ota.apk. If you're using FX with the root module (free one works) go to that file, long-press on it, tap "Details", scroll down a bit and tap "Disable Package".

apk's install without user confirmation.

Out of nowhere today I installed an apk and somehow it didn't ask for permission to install or cancel. at the Notification bar there is a message that says: ES APP MANAGER and the icon is two gears, the apk installs automatically and there is not window asking for permission. All subsequent apk's install this way. very dangerous.
How do I troubleshoot this issue? .. I went to tablet settings applications (ICS 4.0.3) and I don't see any app with that above name.
Help is appreciated, regards.
EDIT. Found the culprit. it's the new version of ES File Explorer 1.6.2.4.a
I'm using the same version of es and I noticed this too.
I still get the dialogue sometimes though depending on the apk.

I went back to version 1.6.2.2 and disabled automatic update in settings for this apk and it's working fine. I will see if another update past v 1.6.2.4 will work again.

[Q] can't sideload apks after rooting

Nexus 5, 4.4.4, dalvik runtime. Currently on cyanogenmod 11, but this problem started prior.
I rooted my phone, initially to run xposed framework. I actually got it installed and opened, but I noticed I couldn't install any modules. Uninstalled, tried to reinstall, found I couldn't sideload any apks. Cancel button works fine, but install button does not respond to touch in any way.
Everything I have tried:
Rebooting
Unrooting/reflashing stock
Rerooting
Using various apk installers/file managers. They all still bring me to the install screen where I can't push install, so they're unless
Clearing caches (dalvik, package installer)
Making sure all screen filter apps are off
Making sure all security options are correct (do not verify app, allow unknown sources)
Flashing a new Rom entirely (cyanogenmod)
I'm at a loss. Are there any options left to try that may fix this?
First, root has nothing to do with your issues. When you say install button doesn't work, what install button are you taking about? And how are you trying to side load an apk? Are you using an app, recovery, or what?

Do you have echo lock screen notification installed?
#stayparanoid
Unfortunately I can't post an image of the install screen because I'm still a new poster. I usually just try to install apps by navigating to them in my file manager and clicking on them. Nothing special. The install screen is the default holo one that pops up.
Welp, turns out it was Echo Lockscreen. That's a massive bummer...loved that app! Thanks Pirateghost.

Remove MOTO G Kitkat Install Notification

I have a rooted and flashed Boost Moto G on Page Plus. Viper did the flash at the beginning of the year and he is telling me it is not a permanent flash but instead an older one.
I am on Kitkat 4.4.2 and a month ago my phone downloaded the 4.4.4 update file. Now every 24 hours I am prompted to install the update and have to continually postpone it. OTA updates are disabled so the phone will not install if I consent. I just want the notification to go away, I am happy with the phone and don't care if I update or not.
I'll take any method that removes the notification and hopefully does not ruin my flash...

I have the solution for you. Download this then go under Google Services Framework and uncheck SystemUpdateService:good:
@nomar116 .... Alternatively you could just use your file manager to navigate to .... /cache .... and delete the 4.4.4 update file.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. Unfortunately I pulled up Google Services Framework and it was already unchecked. I waited to make sure the notification would still come back and it did.

I explored to the cache folder and found the following file Blur_Version.173.44.20.falcon_cdma.Verizon.en.US.zip.
This surprised me since I looked that file up and it is a 4.4.2 update file and I thought the phone was trying to update itself to 4.4.4?? The phone is already on 4.4.2...? Anyway, I'm going to go ahead and delete that file and see where that gets me. Thanks for the help

The real solution is:
Go to /system/priv-app , find 3c_ota.apk and delete/move/revoke permissions or change its extension (any of these will work). Then reboot and you'll never get the nagging notification again.

Thank you. I had seen one of your previous posts with this resolution but could not find the file. I changed the extension to 3c_ota.apk.bin , hopefully I'm in the clear!

LG Viper (LS840) Overview

I purchased an LG Viper LTE (refurbished) from FreedomPop and have spent a bit of time playing with it and determining its capabilities and limitations. I want to have a central repository of knowledge regarding this phone. Some of this may overlap with other devices (LG or other), so I will try to provide links where they make sense. I intend to update this thread as I learn more information.
The phone I received came with LG's LS840ZVK (Android 4.0.4 - ICS) firmware, with a few custom apps that FreedomPop has installed, and a ton of bloatware from both Sprint and LG.
Rooting: (I started with a similar guide and forged my way from there.)
Downgrade your Viper (from version LS840ZVK to LS840ZVI). This will also perform a factory reset.
Root the phone after the downgrade (with the Bin4ry Root tool - If you use Bin4ry v36, use option 3, "New Standard-Root").
Backup root (with Voodoo OTA RootKeeper).
(Connect to WiFi and) Apply the System update (your phone will notify you about this - it has an OTA update for you to install).
Since the OTA update did not wipe (factory reset) your phone, use the Voodoo RootKeeper app to restore your root.
I also updated my Profile/PRL (in "Settings > System Updates"), and I believe this restored my 3G/4G data connection.
For FreedomPop, make sure you install the FreedomPop Messaging app to connect your device to the service.
Bootloader:
Unfortunately, I have not been able to unlock the bootloader. Perhaps, if I downgraded the phone to a pre-ICS firmware, I could do so, but I have not tried that yet.
System trim: (requires root)
I mentioned that the phone came with a bunch of bloatware, which seemed to cause tremendous unnecessary battery drain. With root, I was able to remove many of the junk apps. (Make sure to mount the /system partition as writeable: mount -o remount,rw /system) The list of stock apps I removed:
CameraTestApp.apk
CameraTestApp.odex
LGEmail_Native.apk
LGEmail_Native.odex
LGExchange.apk
LGExchange.odex
MLT.apk (some LG debug app that reports data back to LG and drains battery like crazy)
MLT.odex
PlusOne.apk (Google+)
PlusOne.odex
QuickMemo.apk
QuickMemo.odex
SharedStorageBackup.apk
SharedStorageBackup.odex
Shopper.apk
SmartShare.apk
SmartShare.odex
SprintHiddenMenu.apk (I had thought that your system wouldn't connect to Wifi on boot without this app, but that doesn't appear to be the case.)
SprintHiddenMenu.odex
SprintID.apk
SprintID.odex
SprintMusicPlus.apk
SprintMusicPlus.odex
SprintNASCAR.apk
SprintNASCAR.odex
SprintNBA.apk
SprintNBA.odex
SprintTV.apk
SprintTV.odex
SprintVVM.apk (Visual Voicemail)
SprintVVM.odex
Sprint_Installer.apk
Sprint_Installer.odex
Tag_na.apk
Tag_na.odex
WIFIOffload.apk (Sprint Connections Optimizer - removing this will cause Settings to crash when you navigate to "Settings > More... > Mobile networks > Connection optimizer", so remove only if you can live with that)
WIFIOffload.odex
Zone-Sprint.apk
Zone-Sprint.odex
LG has not only locked their bootloaders on their newer phones, but has also implemented some system check on every boot, so you must TAKE GREAT CAUTION when attempting to trim your system. If you remove an app that the software deems system essential, your next boot will result in a "Security Error", past which you cannot boot. To recover from this, you will have to reflash the firmware. (See the "Rooting" section; whenever I have put my system into this "Security Error" state, I have just downgraded my system and started the rooting process all over. In any case, you will lose your data.)
I don't know which app caused it, but removing one of the following apps will result in a "Security Error":
BooksTablet.apk
BooksTablet.odex
Magazines.apk
Magazines.odex
Talk.apk
Talk.odex
Videos.apk
(I remove apps by moving them into a backup-type directory, and then I can restore them by copying the files back to the /system/app directory.)
Minor annoyances: (I would hope eventually to resolve all of these and indicate the solutions in "Tips and Tricks".)
Camera shutter sound: I cannot select a silent setting for the camera shutter sound. I have I identified /system/media/audio/ui/shutter4.ogg as the most annoying of the four tone options, and have tried removing this file, or replacing it with an audio file of silence to no avail. Perhaps the camera app stores the audio within the app itself. I could download another camera app, but I'd rather not.
Polaris Office: I cannot remove it. It appears as a system app, but I cannot find any file that provides this app, either in /system/app or /data/app. I extracted all of my system apps, and ran a search for "polaris", and only LGHome3.apk had any match. Perhaps LGHome3 contains this app as well, which would mean I would have to reverse-engineer the app in order to remove Polaris Office.
Tips and Tricks:
Silencing the startup/shutdown animations: I located the files for the animations and simply removed them, rather than keep them and do something to silence them. The /system/media directory contained both files for the boot (bootanimation.zip) and shutdown (shutdownanimation.zip) animations, and I removed both of these files.
[Reserved for future updates]
Kingo Root
I rooted with Kingo Root and did not have to downgrade to LS840ZVI. I removed all the Sprint apps but removing any of the Google apps will apparently result in the security error. Better to freeze the stuff you don't need.
Reflashed LS840ZVK rooted and started over again.
Kingo Root works
I also used Kingo Root successfully. I removed most of the apps listed in this guide with the exception of Google apps. Instead of using OTA Rootkeeper to preserve root, I used Super SU Pro, which has a survival mode.
Magazines is not one of the apps that will cause the security error. It is either Books, Movies, Music, or a combination of the three. Additionally, if you do use any of those apps, and you integrate the updated APKs into the ROM, it will cause a boot error as well.
hi can i ask if there is still link for ls840zvk manual firmware? I am having security error on boot thanks guys.

[Q] How to prevent OTA Update?

I am running 4.4.4, and would like to stay that way, I got the notification today about the system update to Lollipop. I've been tapping "No thanks" whenever it pops up, but obviously I would like someway to disable it altogether so I don't need to keep tapping that.
Any suggestions?
Kitkat has far worst memory issues than Lollipop, so I don't know why you decide not to upgrade.
Anyway,
Go to Options -> Apps -> All -> Search for Motorola OTA -> Click Disable
Then you won't get any notifications for the update.

I went to Settings, Apps, All, and do not have an entry for Motorola OTA. The only Motorola apps listed are
Motorola Services Main
Motorola Service
Motorola One Time Init
Motorola Notificaton
Motorola ID
Motorola DriveActivator
Motorola Contextual Services
Motorola Checkin
Motorola Boot Services
Motorola Assist Framework
I tried downloading FOTAKill.zip and flashing that in TWRP, still got the update notification. I tried downloading DisableService in the app store and disabled SystemUpdateServices under Google Play Services, that didn't work. I just tried downloading FOTAKill.apk and copying it to /system/app, we'll see if that works.
Try this: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95897840722643321
Constant OTA downloads
I have XT1032 with 5.1 GPE optimized v1.1
For a month data usage eats up my whole plan. I suspect it's the OTA update it downloads over and over again, since it says 7.6MB, and Android OS reports such increases, sometimes multiple times a day.
Does the above link work for this version? Do I just install it within the GUI, or copy it somewhere from within recovery?
