Multiwindow concept - Omni Features Development

@XpLoDWilD how's this? Looking forward to your comments
Swipe gesture here is not what action launcher offers. It's different, please check it out.
And enumerate the issues that can still persist in this kind of implementation, i will keep drawing till i get it right and easier for the not so techy people.

The app clicked appears "split in that half of the screen" of which the appdrawer has been swiped out.

Not sure what I'm looking at here, should these menus be always accessible? In which case it's a no-go, considering the number of apps having swipe-from-the-edge gestures.

Ok got your point. Thanks again for pointing out my mistake.
But here i is my take:-
##**Have this swipe gesture only in the 'recent apps screen'. ##**
In recents screen, 2 hotspot on left edge, upper and lower half.
1.Press recents> 2.swipe from edge in the half you want your new app> vertical continual scrollable app drawer appears( like the old launcher pro)> 3.click app. Done
Easy and i hope awesome. Just 3 steps accessible from all screens, all apps, all phones?
See i am trying so hard everyday because the basic problem in omni current implementation is that app should be in recents app. If it's not been open yet, or if it has been swiped off to clear ram, then imagine the number of steps in the currents method to open app in split view.
Sent from my GT-P3100 using Tapatalk

In recent apps screen, just like we have clear all apps button, we can add 2 new buttons ( no swipe gesture)
After that the same steps as above. In whichever half you click app drawer appears and then split app appears there.

I personally like this idea here:
Instead of necessary buttons and shortcuts that are easy to accidentally trigger, just use the multitasking screen itself to long-press an app and then drag it to one side of the screen. Then maybe have two buttons that only appear in multitasking mode, either on the top left and bottom left or on the app preview to remove the app from multitasking. But that's just my idea.

hmm i liked the video as well. but i've always disliked the idea of the app necessarily being already in recents. people always swipe off all recent app to clear RAM.

Just a thought!
Would it be possible to combine halo with multi-window? I know that they don't play well together but I am thinking something along the lines of a mashup. Halo is good at managing notifications in immersive mode but does not give a true multi-tasking environment. Multi-window clearly is the winner when it comes to multitasking but not as good as halo in handling notifications.
Imagine when you receive a notification in immersive mode through halo and when actioned on, it does not open a floating window (which is the case now) but resizes the current window and opens the new one as a split (also making it the active one and pausing the activity in the other one if there is a need to).
Just a thought. I am not a coder and have no idea how much of a pain in the arse this would be but it would be a combination of two of the most innovative features that are currently available on customs ROMs.

@XpLoDWilD
Something interesting maybe you can look into to get some ideas
LG launches QSlide SDK to bring floating windows to third-party apps
http://www.androidcentral.com/lg-launches-qslide-sdk-bring-floating-windows-third-party-apps

Why not make it simple?
Why splitting main desktop window?
Every laucher allow many virtual desktop windows, so why not putting on app per window and switching between apps by swypping left-right?
It should be possible as KDE linux do it since many years now.
I am not a dev, but in my mind this should be easyer than floating multiwindows (no needs to resize).
It would be just awesome to have multitasking with full size display. :good:

For Multi window app selection why not just put a small button on the far left edge of the Nav bar? Allow the user to set a few favorites in a drawer with a option of an app drawer to select any app (see the application drawer option in gravity box) While I understand this will only work on devices with on screen nav keys I see it as the most natural option for those devices.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't OmniSwitch the Multi-Window thing for OmniROM?

[[Idea]]Notification bar Multi tasking((Picture))

So i have been working on something for awhile it started on paper and Made an example in Photoshop. the Idea is you open the notification bar and you swipe left and right to move through open applications and swipe up to end them Check out attachment.
PS: I am not a programmer so I cant make this happen I just thought of it..
BTW: can you control applications from the notification bar?? if not then this is worthless...
That would be really, really good. And I like your mock-up concept as well.
Sort of like the new Dolphin HD tab browser.
You should suggest this to one of the Launcher devs.
good..because the notification bar is always on top..will be great for multitasking.
That's why I tried to do in TaskOS ( free on the Market.)
I do not use the notification bar, but a long press on the search button ( if your device doesn't have one, in the settings you can choose camera button and will try to add more)
The screenshot should be working in some custom realease of CyanogenMod..

Putting something like this in place of long pressing the home button would be the best way I would think.
I like the idea *!*!
possible? Maybe. I think of the interaction of seepu+ as an interaction example, but I don't even wasn't to think about the memory that would suck up.
Do you plan on having all the apps in memory up there? Cause that's gonnna be alot of swiping to find what you need.
Also you already have the hold down home button. That's accessible even with the notification bar hidden (various browsers, apps hide the not. bar).
I really don't get the desire to have thumbnails on handhelds for what the activity is doing. 1) they will always bee too small to use by glancin 2) you know what your switching to, before you even bring up the recent apps function. 3) There is very little "visual" activities done on a phone that warrant a "preview" in order to choose which you want to pick.
All of you could also try Power Strip and Quick Desk for great multitasking usage with the search and homescreen buttons
ITS a CONCEPT not going to happen by me...
yes, multitaslk view is more important
i like your idea of thumbnail view of each programs running in the background. it allows us to look through all running programs, instead of small icons
If it is possible, it can be shown either using the search or home button
Good concept, but I'd be thinking of using the icon of the software instead of screen preview. Better for privacy...

What is your problem with the apps that we send you? They do exactly what you want exept they are not in task bar ( because we cannot "draw" into the taskbar)
TaskOS
Power Strip
Quick desk
The "screenshot" will be available in some custom ROMS:

[APP][3.1+][LAUNCHER] TasKarou Launcher Overlay

Tired of moving your fingers up/down your tablet to switch applications? Try out TasKarou!
TasKarou is a multitasking launcher overlay.
Taking inspiration from the 'Quick Controls' feature in the android browser, TasKarou provides a multitasking layer on top of a launcher for phone and tablets.
By swiping anywhere on the left or right edge of your device screen, you can activate TasKarou's UI, giving you access to a quick, smooth, and intuitive interface to facilitate app launch, transition, and management for the user
The user interface brings a more responsive, and enjoyable level of interaction to your device.
The app is available in the android market: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ne0fhykLabs.home.taskarou
Notes:
To use TasKarou, set it as the default home launcher, and from TasKarou's settings, select the actual home launcher you want to overlay.
TasKarou user interface is then triggered by swiping from either the left of right edge of your tablet screen, while still allowing access to the overlaid home launcher through the home button.

It should be possible, but unfortunately, I lack the resources to pursue development in that area (lack of devices running GB).
If someone has the knowledge, and the resources, I might consider open sourcing the app to allow development in that area.
I installed the app on my rooted Kindle Fire HD running ADW Launcher. It was nice to finally have multi-tasking/task switching ability on the tablet. Unfortunately had to uninstall it because it kept on causing failures with App Protector Pro - which I rely on more than task switching. When a new version comes out I'll try again.
Otherwise, great app!

I should mention that the error only occurs if you somehow try to avoid entering the password such as hitting the cancel button or the back button.
HI!
I've been using this app for a week now, and love it.
I have some suggestions that might be useful:
-I have a galaxy note 2 and it's quite difficult for short fingers like me to reach back/menu buttons when operating with one hand. Could you please, please, pleeease add them?:fingers-crossed:
-Also it would be awesome to customize menus. For example, I don't use the options buttons quite often as I use 15 toggles toolbar, and the lower menu is easier to access with my thumb than the upper. That's where I'd locate home, menu and back buttons (if added), but maybe another person that's using a tablet likes the way it is now. Customizable buttons would solve this problem, so anyone could move/add/remove the buttons as he prefered.
-When using Google Chrome and swapping between tabs,it's necessary to move your finger horizontally from the border of the screen, and taskarou is launching when doing this. Perhaps you could implement an additional way to launch it by moving the finger vertically along the border of the screen.
-Last, It would be great to have the possibility to add a shortcut to any application, so you could quick launch your most used apps.
Well, perhaps all of this is asking too much but you would make me sooo happy if you could implement the first suggestion
Hey ne0fhyk,
Could you add customisation to the buttons?? So that you can replace them with whatever you want, I would really like the back home and applications button, also a time overlay on the corcver of the screen when the launcher is activated would be aweomse
I just wanted to add my vote for the ability to customize the menu..
I like the idea, but would prefer to be able to use the existing default screens for multitasking, app drawer, etc.
Perhaps this could be accomplished similar to other apps / lauchers that have an intent / activity / application browsers to make shortcuts (NovaLauncher / QuickShortcutMaker are good examples from the Play store). Perhaps there could be a nested ordered list of menu items in the settings with support for drag and drop to arrange shortcuts, and add new shortcuts
After basic customization is available it would be nice to see support for Automation app API's to create shortcuts to actions from Tasker, AutomateIT Pro, etc
Thanks for listening!
All better!

Turns out that the problem was with App Protector Pro. I updated the app and no more problems. Happily using TasKoarou again.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just pushed an update that add back, and menu shortcuts for rooted devices.
For the next update, my focus is to add the ability to customize the menu. That update should have the rest of the features you suggested.

Your first suggestions have been implemented, and should be available in the app, starting with version 3.2.
Your next suggestions are on my list to get done for the next update!
Sorry for the delay, but because of work, I do not have as much time to spend on this application as I wish. The app is open source though, so if you are a developer, or know interested developer, feel free to pitch in
Please, add shortcuts, last (previious) app, widget panel (from CM roms), open notifications and more hardware keys, like play\pause, volume and others.
Add second (inner) row for regular buttons, while outer row will act the same as now. If this will be implemented, than the outer row can be used in a whole new way. Swiping to the one of it's buttons and taking off the finger will start an action, binded to this button, but if you swipe and hold (with adjustable hold timeout), you'll get an access to submenu for the button.
I would also love to see black list for apps, such as drawing app ArtFlow, which is using screen borders to access tollbars.
I've just installed this app to use it instead of SlimPie in my Slim Bean rom, and I've already bought it, cause I like it's idea. Though, it's less responsive still, compared to LMT or SlipPie.
Keep up the good work.
Stunning work my friend

I tested it on several devices, and it doesn't affect battery life at all. While it's idle (not being triggered by the user), TasKarou launcher only background activity is to keep the trigger edges active, which allows it to consume very little cpu activity while in the background.

[APP][2.2+] Smart Taskabr 2 - most convenient one hand optimized quick access launche

[Smart Taskbar V2]
Smart Taskbar is designed to make you use your phone one handed easily. All new V2 is even more one hand optimized. Launch any application instantly without leaving your current window. Swipe your finger or click the trigger icon anytime in any App to bring up Smart Taskbar panel for super fast app launching also works as app organizer, folder organizer, multi tasker, task killer, and shortcut manager. The App is carefully designed and implemented to make sure you can comfortable do most things with just one hand. If you are one hand operation freak and is always looking for something to use your phone easier with one hand, then Smart Taskbar 2 is the right thing for you. Although it is capable, but I still don't suggest you use my App in driving. :silly:
How is everyone saying about V1:

Reviewed by lifehacker in 2012
[Some Background]
About three years ago, I introduced an app called Smart Taskbar which used a never been used technique called system overlay window to demonstrate the potential benefit of using top level window in Android Apps to create something that is always on top and always available first time. So thats why you see many many devs that use similar technique to make their Apps such as swipe pad, swapps, sidebar...etc. Many of you may not know its me who brought you the first app in this class in Android Market by the time because app Smart Taskbar V1 is not as famous as other similar apps. Probably due to lack of details or it is simply too engineering style.
During my development of V1 in 2010, I asked many friends around me to see how's their reaction with an always available, always displayed, tiny trigger button design thats is displayed all the time on screen to access a small launcher style window when pressed. All of them told me its obstructive and bad of user experience. 3 years has passed. Even Apple adopt the idea in their iOS5 called accessitive touch. I don't know did Apple engineers know about my App. But I am quite happy that my concept is accepted by Apple.
If you are interested to know more about my V1, you can refer to this XDA thread for more details:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/smart-taskbar-launch-any-app-in-2-steps/
So I decided to create a V2 to improve problems that I have in V1. I started the requirement and feature development as early as the beginning of 2012 and started real coding job in Jun 2012. Finally after about 6 months of hard coding, I released my first beta on PlayStore in March, 2013. After two more months of beta and debugging, I think its ready to announce the App to everyone on XDA today.

I don't quite get you because isn't Chrome non full screen app?
For button control, it would require root for key simulation and I don't want to make ST to be a root App. So I'd suggest you try my key simulation App, Button Savior.

2) When button savior start, I'd like to have it maximized (like a normal bar) I don't want to click on the arrow to make it apper.

I bought V2 as soon as I saw it -- been a happy user of V1 since early on.
One thing I've noticed -- alphabetical sorting of the apps doesn't actually seem to show them alphabetically for me. I can't figure out what order they're displayed in ... perhaps the name of the APK as opposed to the app name?
Also, as some have posted in the Play Store comments, the circular Quick Launch spots look nice but they're a little small on my HTC One and don't show the app very clearly.
Saw this yesterday and installed it. Bought it today. Incredible app. Samsung should give this a good look. Absolutely the best organizational app I have used.

You press and hold on it for about 0.5S. Then you should be able to move it. For clean up all quick spots, there is no such function yet, I will try to add it later.

Here's a screenshot I took yesterday that I believe shows the strange sort order I posted about. Jerryfan2000, any idea what's going on here?

Bad Interface Design

Just got my new Pixel 4XL yesterday and I'm loving it so far. The gesture navigation is really smooth and easy to use BUT the interface around the persistent "Swipe Up" bar at the bottom is terrible and needs to be sorted. It variously cuts into apps or adds entire sections on to the bottom of elements wasting screen real estate. Have a look at the images below. The Google keyboard has an entire section added to the bottom with the little minimize arrow on it. What a waste of space. Apps like Whatsapp just get cut off with a black bar etc. Even Google apps like the App Store and Chrome just get cut off too. The method of cut off varies wildly too which is just bad design and convention. Hopefully this will get sorted over time. All we need is the little bar to be overlaid all the time and persistent.

I understand what your saying. I brought up the same concerns during the Android Q beta however the wasted screen real estate is justified. Firstly the space added to the bottom of the keyboard is to make typing more comfortable, raising it to a typical height. Secondly the gap between the gesture swipe up bar and whatever app your in is for apps and webpages that add tabs to the bottom of the page (Edge and Brave to name a few). I can only be hopeful as the gesture navigation system becomes more widespread, developers will replace that bottom tab system in exchange for something else.
I use this app to remove the bar. All functions and gestures work, and the design inconsistencies are gone!

Nice find! It's pretty neat. It's kinda anoying seeing the Google Assistant curve cut off on the home screen though.
I used to use FNG but when it came to using the keyboard and needing to back out it was a pain in the ass. So I agree with this design for the gestures as it's simple to back out.
Also why do you need more screen real estate with the keyboard open? Imo it doesn't matter when you're typing anyway.

Why do you have issues backing out of keyboard? I just set FNG to work just like Google Gestures, only difference is no bar at the bottom. FNG works with third party launchers, Google gestures do not.

I'm currently using gestures with Nova launcher. Google has added the third party launcher gesture support not too long ago.

I use this app to remove the bar. All functions and gestures work, and the design inconsistencies are gone!

I just want to say thanks for this fantastic post. This saved me from having to look at that jarring, half finished navigation pill on the bottom with the strip surrounding it. Google should have done the same what Apple did and float the bar overtop of content. No extra strip needed on the bottom. Everything is working perfectly.

Excellent find. Thank you very much!!

Task switching method

I've not seen this mentioned anywhere as an Android 11 feature, and I'm not sure it's nova launcher either (and i'm too lazy to disable it to check) but I noticed that in gesture navigation mode you can swipe left and right at the bottom of the screen (in the launcher or in any app) to navigate between tasks.

I had a quick look and found it mentioned here:
https://www.computerworld.com/article/3439060/android-gestures.html
Point 9.
And I agree with point 10 - it's really confusing trying to work out which app you'll see if you swipe left or right. Possibly this is why it's not mentioned in the settings page.

Here is the manual written by me so excuse any lack of clarity :
Whatever task you start or go into will be in latest position to the right which means you can only swipe left for previous tasks.
As any task you do action in will go to the right if you multitask between two tasks the latest of the two will always be to the left.
If you go into task panel (swipe up) and select a task it will become the current tasks and therefore you will only be able to swipe left.
So you can only swipe right if you are looking through tasks to find the one you want to work with. as soon as your work in it become the latest position to the right.
Finally after working it out it's pretty natural.
